Hello Everyone! I hope you are all doing well. After this past week with the tragic wildfires, I hope you and your families are safe. Many of our D32 families have lost their homes due to the fire; and they need all the help, love, and support we can give them. Because of the fire tragedies, we will be suspending almost all of our other projects for the next month or so. The plan is to focus on helping the fire victims. Projects temporarily put on hold are: PTP fundraising, Save the Rain and most of the activities planned for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. We all need to stick together in these times, like the family that we are. I hope to see you all soon. Even though school is suspended through Tuesday of this week, we’ll still be asking members to help us with our efforts to raise funds for the fire victims. We’ll be out in front of Ray’s Food Place and maybe Grocery Outlet as often as possible, asking people to donate to help feed those who have lost their homes. The money we collect will be given to the Redwood Empire Food Bank. The choices we make right now about how we spend our time can really make a huge difference to the lives of many who are suffering. We’ll be in touch. We are hoping that EVERY member steps up to help with our efforts for the fire victims. Please stay safe!
I attended the Builders Club Dinner this year, and let me tell you‌it was such a great feeling to see so many kids! I did not expect to see more than 10 Builders Clubbers. I saw way more than that, girls and boys! Julie talked about their projects and showed pictures to the families. The food was great, too. They had several dishes, as it was pot luck. And, there was lemonade. It was delicious. I can’t wait to see what they will do, and to share what we will do together.

Region Training Conference By Tucker Morgan The Region Training Conference at Cardinal Newman on the last Saturday of September was a good way for new members like me to get my Key Club feet wet. It was very informative for everyone involved in the Key Club world. For the people who do not know what the Region Training Conference is, it's basically where members learn the motives of Key Club and receive member and officer training. Being new to Key Club, I learned a lot that I can put to use in our club, and even in the world outside of Key Club. The main objective of the training was to get ready for the year to come. It also was a great way to meet members from other clubs. I learned that Key Clubs all around the county are like one big family. It wasn’t just training; we also got awesome food! A downside about the conference was that only about a third of people showed up this year, compared to last year. A lot of work went into preparing for the day, and it’s sad that so few members in our division took advantage of this chance to learn more about Key Club. Overall, I had a great time playing all the ice breakers and learning what Key Club is all about.
We are so fortunate to have one of our new members step forward to take over the monthly production of our club newsletter. Rowan Addison is a very busy Key Clubber. In this, her freshman year at CHS, she is on the Soccer team, and taking a tough academic load of classes, as well as involving herself in Key Club as an Executive Assistant. She’s helped sell after-school snacks for the Save the Rain project, and has been the main editor for our club newsletters.

Alex Visconti Alex is our new club Webmaster. We are thankful for his willingness, as a new member this year, to take on this awesome responsibility! We know it is hard to take over from someone else, and we are sorry that our previous Webmaster, Rory Kluesener, had to step down. Alex is a sophomore at CHS. In addition to Key Club, Alex is on the Cross Country team. He also carries a heavy academic work load, and has a hobby of building computers! His computer expertise is what led us to ask him if he might be willing to take on the duties of updating and maintaining the club website. He’s been doing a phenomenal job, and we are fortunate to have him on our officer team!

Awake-A-Thon 2017 By Alex Visconti The Awake-A-Thon was quite an interesting event. As Cloverdale, (with only two of us), arrived, the other Key Clubbers were running into each other with giant cushiony balls that they were inside. They were like those Sumo wrestling costumes. Some of us were playing board games while others just socialized; and later people started doing karaoke. For food, there were burgers and chips at the beginning. Then a chocolate fountain was brought out with fruit and other food to make a shish kebab. That was, the best part of the night! People started to fall asleep by 3 a.m., though the party didn’t end until 7. Everyone should come next year, because it really is some fun!

Save the Rain Assembly By Anahi Ruiz | Cloverdale
After months of planning and much anticipation, Selina Stratton and Kelly Coleman came to Cloverdale High School and gave an amazing presentation about Save the Rain. At the assembly, we had all our members line up while Anahi introduced Selina. Selina made her presentation interactive, where she asked questions. Towards the end, Gaby talked a little about what we were going to do for the on-campus fundraiser and then closed off the assembly. It was quite special to see the audience be so respectful. It felt like they began to understand how privileged are our lives in comparison to what the children in Africa face on an everyday basis. It was also fun to see one slide in the visuals which showed some of our senior boys who helped with a Save the Rain fundraiser four years ago, when they were at Washington School. The crowd roared when their half-shaved heads were shown. Gaby announced that we’re lucky this year to have Tanner Wanke volunteer to have his head shaved for the cause! So, we’ve taken the first step on our journey to help our students understand why they should participate in helping Save the Rain in Africa. Our campus fundraiser is the next step. We’re ready!

Save The Rain By Andreina Inda We have already done a significant amount of work to help raise money for our Save The Rain project. Two such activities are the following: we set up information and collection tables at community-wide events; we stood outside after-school with a table full of treats. These really helped us to raise money, because we made about $50 a week, every week, by only standing outside for 15-20 minutes each day after school! Furthermore, we came up with a good idea to help raise awareness of the cause! We set up a game during lunchtime where the students could play. We asked them a question about Save the Rain, and if they answered the question right, then they got to spin a wheel for a prize. We’ll be taking this game on the road with us as we go to other organizations and do presentations in the future. It involves a spinning wheel, and everyone seems to love that! We’re also setting up a plan to do a donation drawing as a fundraiser. This will be for the entire community. The prize is a trip to Disneyland where someone will win a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket! We’re also planning a Miles for Maji Walk to hold here in Cloverdale. Details are still to be figured out on that. But, we’ll be keeping everyone posted as we make our plans.

September Recognition MEMBER OF THE MONTH The Member of the Month is Liz Ruiz for dedicating eight hours helping at the Bi-National Health Fair, as well as assisting with the Kiwanis Imagination Library table, helping with our Save the Rain project, and for being one of our helpers at the Senior Center.
OFFICER OF THE MONTH The Officer of the Month is Neidi Calvillo. She put in a lot of time preparing for the Member Orientation, as well as went to the Kiwanis DCM, fundraised for PTP, worked on the club scrapbook and went to the Builders Club Dinner. She is doing an amazing job.

The devastation of the North Bay Fires has impacted so many people. Many of our fellow Kiwanis family members are suffering with a loss of their homes and property. It’s up to those of us who are fortunate for having been bypassed by this catastrophe to figure out ways to help! For the next weeks and months, we’ll have to start by doing what’s necessary, and then work our way through the possible to what may appear to us right now as impossible…building and becoming even stronger and better than ever! Our members have already taken some steps this past week towards doing what appeared necessary. Check out the following pages to view our efforts. Join us in the coming weeks, as we attempt to work towards the “impossible” and raise a lot of money and food at both school and in front of Ray’s.

What we are Doing for Fire Victims
North Bay Fires and What We’re Doing By Cristina Cardenas Instead of focusing on Save the Rain fundraising, our Cloverdale High School Key Club is now focusing on fundraising for the fire victims. We know that many of our fellow Kiwanis and Key Clubbers live in the affected areas and might have lost everything, which is why we want to help in their desperate time of need. On the 11th of October, four Key Clubbers got together and made flyers for food and clothing drives. They wrote a Letter to the Editor of the Cloverdale Reveille to let the community know what we are doing, and that we need their help to give aid to the rest of our Sonoma County neighbors. When we decided to postpone all fundraising for PTP and Save the Rain and UNICEF for the fire victims, we quickly got whatever we needed to get done, done to get the word around that we need help in order to make change happen. So, here is what we are doing: 1) We’re operating a fundraising drive at CHS; 2) We’ve put flyers and collection canisters around town in most of the businesses; 3) We put collection barrels for food inside Ray’s and Grocery Outlet; 4) We are standing outside Ray’s a lot of days this month, asking for donations; 5) We have put together a clothing drive through the network of Cloverdale churches, to be started on October 29th; 6) We’re planning a Donation Car Wash and we’ll send the proceeds to the Redwood Empire Food Bank; 7) We’re encouraging people to donate on the Division 32 GoFundMe account that LTG Annaleigh set up.

Kiwanis Weekly & Board meetings – Members are still encouraged to attend these. Reminder – Key Club Bucks available. Fall Rally and Kiwanis Vineyard Runs – It is particularly important that we help at the Vineyard Runs Reminder – Key Club Bucks available, (and they can be applied to Saturday’s trip) ***You could earn as much at $45 that day! The Birthday Bags project to be shared with the Builders Club was switched to October 25th. Don’t miss it; it’s one hour after school, and we’ll be putting together bags of birthday supplies for the children of families who come through the Food Pantry. Shine Day is still planned for the last Friday of the month. On the last Tuesday of the month, it is Halloween. We’re making plans for a party in Room 21. We’ll probably feed everyone. We may ask for a $2 fee, with ALL the money going to save lives with Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. On that Tuesday evening, Halloween – we are hoping that members will take UNICEF boxes around with them as they go out into the town to Trick-or-Treat.
Don’t forget that our campus Save the Rain fundraiser has been changed to a campus Save the Fire Victims fundraiser. We start on Thursday and go until the following Friday.

CNH PTP WEEK
MAKE IT KNOWN MONDAY Advertise the cause on social media. Use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. Spend meeting time with an ice breaker or game or video that educates members about the PTP cause. TOO YOUNG TUESDAY Too many children die early from Pediatric Trauma. This means too many lives that weren’t lived, and too many possibilities left unfulfilled. To spark questions from your peers and to educate others wear gear such as helmets and knee pads. Wear the things that a child should’ve been wearing so that their life would not have ended. READY FOR FALL RALLY WEDNESDAY Host or participate in a service project in relation to PTP. For example, canvas your communities about safety issues. Host a child’s safety fair, or bicycle safety event. SPARK A THOUGHT THURSDAY As PTP Week comes to a quick close, be sure to share all the knowledge that you have accumulated throughout the week. Be sure to share that knowledge on how to prevent pediatric trauma. This can be done through a quick “Did you know?” tweet, or through a long informative Facebook post. Feel free to also share a baby picture. You made it, you didn’t suffer from pediatric trauma, and that’s something worth sharing. A lot of us take many things for granted, including the fact that we are alive and well. FROM THE HEART FRIDAY Just like that, the end of PTP week is here. There are so many people to show gratitude for. Write thank you letters to Partnering Hospital’s doctors, nurses, and other staff members to show your appreciate for all the work that they do. You can do this with your home club, or individually. You can also extend the thanks to your parents, and thank them for keeping you alive and safe.
This information might normally provide direction for our activities this coming week. But, with the change in our plans for this month, we probably won’t be doing these. But, we thought our members might like to know what the rest of CNH is up to!
Fall Rally!
By Andreina Inda This year Fall Rally will be held on October 21st. Fall Rally is all about many divisions coming together to celebrate their fundraising efforts for the Pediatric Trauma Program; and it’s also about having a good time. When we arrive at Fall Rally, at Six Flags, each Key Club meets up with their division and all of a division is grouped together. Then we go to a huge outdoor stage area, near their lake, where we see thousands of other Key Clubbers. Actually, the event is so big that only half of the Key Clubbers in the park are in our rally! They actually have to hold TWO rallies to fit us all! We cheer, have spirit competitions, and talk about all we’ve been doing to help the PTP cause. We do this for about 1 hour and then once it’s over, we all get together as a club and go eat lunch. Our lunch is pre-paid and in a special place just for Key Clubbers. It is a buffet; and keep in mind the fact that it is less expensive and less time-consuming to eat lunch there. If we were to go directly out into the park, we would pay more and stand in longer lines to get our food! Once lunch is over, everyone can go their separate ways and go on rides and later, when it gets dark, we enjoy the scary people who come out during Fright Fest!
Assuming Fall Rally is NOT postponed, then you and your family will have to make a decision about whether or not you will be going. If it is held, it will be because those in charge have thoroughly researched such factors as air quality, and determined the event to be safe for our members. We will be texting everyone on Monday & Tuesday to finalize a list of who still wants to attend. On the next page, you’ll find a breakdown your fundraising efforts towards attending.

We hope this will give you the information that will help determine whether you can afford to attend. Decisions must be made and texted to Sue by TUESDAY. She is required to register everyone by Wednesday & needs to arrange drivers. All money is due at a special club meeting held in Room 21 on Friday. If you are missing needed forms, and you wish to go, blank versions will be emailed to you & those are also due on Friday.
By Gabriela Gaona On Sunday, October 22, our Kiwanis Club of Cloverdale will be hosting the Kiwanis Vineyard Runs. Many people from all around, even from outside the United States, plan or schedule their lives around this run; so, it’s actually a big event. At this event, we help with set up, with the aid stations on the course, and with the breakfast. At the end of the race Kiwanis members offer the runners an amazing breakfast as their way of saying, “good job”. There will be a time when they might need some of us to help on the course. If we help at an aid station, we hand out water, and fruit slices and other things that they can grab on the run! We also give the runners directions and cheer them on. This event is fun; and I highly encourage everyone to attend. It’s a great bonding experience with our Kiwanis and you get to watch some really fast runners.
We will need members from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help at the donation table!
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF/The Eliminate Project By Gabriela Gaona Many of you may not know that Kiwanis International and UNICEF have partnered up to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the world. What is maternal and neonatal tetanus you may ask? Well, it is a deadly disease that steals the lives of 34,000 innocent babies a year, and sometimes their mothers as well. Our goal is to help reduce these numbers by supplying a simple series of 3 shots, a tetanus vaccine, to the child-bearing women in the parts of the world where this disease exists. And, the month of October is normally one of our busiest months to help fundraise for this cause. However, because of the North Bay Fires, we are cutting back on our plans for this project. One of the things we like to do every year, when Halloween approaches is to give out Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes to all our members. So instead of going out Trick-or-Treating for candy, you could ask for donations! Since we’re not doing some of our other typical UNICEF fundraisers this year, we really hope everyone considers helping on this one night! Don’t forget, people will probably still give you candy!

Tentative November Calendar
This tentative calendar will need Board approval, and will probably have additions and changes as we get closer to the month of November. For example: we’ll want to add in March of Dimes Prematurity Awareness activities. We’ll have a lot more details to share about International Key Club Week, and more!

Seeds of Learning By Anahi Ruiz On November 7th Gail Chadwin, a representative of Seeds of Learning, will be coming to Cloverdale to talk to us about what SOL is and what they do. What is Seeds of Learning? SOL is an organization that helps build schools in Nicaragua. There are many communities there where children don’t have the opportunity of going to school and getting an education. It could be because the school is too far away, or because there isn’t even a school anywhere nearby. The children want to learn. They know that getting an education is the means they can use to raise their standard of living from extreme poverty! SOL also works to build libraries. SOL not only provides a learning experience for children, but will educate their parents who never got the opportunity to go to school. We are really looking forward to being able to help this amazing organization. The first step will be Gail’s visit to us. November 7th is during Key Club Week, and we think having her present at our Key Club meeting that day will be an appropriate way to help celebrate our international week of service!
Key Club Week By Neidi Calvillo Key Club Week is the first full week of November. This year, that will be November 6-10. We have a lot of fun with Key Club Week. We dress up in Key Club our spirit gear and show how much we love Key Club on “Show Your K in Every Way Day”. That’s on Monday, the 6th. We also do service projects, and there is even a day when we show our appreciation to everyone. That’s on Tuesday, and it’s called, “Kudos to the Key Players Day”. Every day we do something different, and the last day is called “Connect the Ks Day”. That’s when we plan an activity with both our Builders Club and our Kiwanis. We’ll keep everyone posted on all the activities of Key Club Week as we get closer to that start date of November 6th.
Key Club Week November 6 - November 10, 2017 Key Club Week gives you the opportunity to show your community what Key Club is truly about: service. Each day places an emphasis on service, to promote Key Club within our homes, schools and communities and to make Key Club a household name.
Monday Show Your K! Show people what Key Club is all about! Spread the word by wearing Key Club gear and publicizing Key Club Week in local stores, the school website, community newspapers—even on the radio.
Tuesday Kudos to the Key Players! Personally thank all the Key Club supporters you know—teachers, advisors and other key players. Write thank-you notes, host an appreciation dinner or do something uniquely your own style to recognize the contributions of these special people.
Wednesday Dare to Care! Key Club has three preferred charities— UNICEF, March of Dimes and Children’s Miracle Network. Take time to focus on service projects that help support these causes such as making non-slip socks or super-hero capes for the children in your local CMN hospital.
Thursday Random Acts of Kindness! A smile goes a long way. Spread happiness throughout the school by doing little random acts of kindness such as leaving cards with inspirational messages on every student’s locker or just simply holding the door for someone else. Challenge every member to complete at least one random act of kindness.
Friday Connect the Ks! Key Club is the largest high school service organization in the world, and is a member of the Kiwanis family. Celebrate the entire family of Kiwanis by getting the whole gang involved. Connect with local Kiwanis, Circle K International, Builders, Kiwanis Kids or Aktion clubs and team up for a joint service project.
