The Tigard-Tualatin School District has been working for the past couple school years to integrate concepts of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (S.T.E.M.) into its curriculum.

By Sue Cummins We were asked to put together 25 bags of supplies and instructions needed for middleschool children to study Sir Isaac Newton’s three laws of motion, (and at the same time, to have fun with balloon rocket races)! Besides the supplies for the science activity, some of our members added a few of our own treats to each bag. The best part of the project was getting together to assemble everything! Even the family cat got into the action!

In this program, there is anintentional approach to recruit more girls to careers traditionally held by men. And boys are encouraged to explore careers more often held by women. Also, Latino and black students are given a chance to investigate career fields that are often dominated by caucasians.
