News: Small Changes to Staff Bring Big Benefits To Program!
Mort Murry, a nurse practitioner, has just completed his doctorate degree (DNP) at OHSU, which means he’s now Dr. Murry. He was hired to head the transition program for the patients with sickle cell anemia as they mature from teenagers to young adults. His efforts will be spent ensuring a safe and successful transition of patients with sickle cell anemia from pediatric-based care to patient-directed adult-based care. This transition is very hard for teenagers with complex chronic illnesses, who have grown so close to and so trustful of their pediatric care teams. It’s also hard for the pediatric providers to transfer their patients’ care to adult providers who have not yet established a patient-physician relationship. Of course, a successful transition is key to these patients' optimal health. Transition of patients with sickle cell anemia is poorly done in most centers around the country. The plan is for Mort to develop an outstanding program and show other centers nationwide how to do it really well. Kelly Bell was hired to fill a newly created and vital position in the Doernbecher Blood and Cancer Program. She is now the Nurse Manager who oversees the entire PHO clinical program at the 21-bed inpatient unit, adjacent clinic and Infusion Center with more than 60 RNs and many other staff. Kelly brings unique expertise to this position: she attained degrees in Public Health and in Management before obtaining her nursing degree. She is completing a PhD program at OHSU/Portland State in Health Systems & Policy and will continue her studies along with her new full-time job. Kelly was a pediatric oncology nurse for a number of years before joining the program.
