"Street Vendors and the Contestation of Public Space" documents a time of rapid political and urban change in Cairo, between 2011- 2015. It focuses on the issue of street vendors as an entry point to broader questions regarding who owns, controls, and uses public space. This study seeks to contribute to broader research questions concerning informal economies in Cairo and the right to the city, while focusing on the spatial manifestation of these practices. Based on a systematic documentation and analysis of the question of street vendors in downtown Cairo, it proposes potential design and policy recommendations.
