EDITOR’S NOTE

n our cover this month is not exactly something you will be unfamiliar with. It is the newest release of the Toyota Innova. There are a few changes, some of them quite welcome. But the real reason it is on our cover is because, basically, the whole market changed around it. It is the target of many of the new entries into the market over the last few years, with new models that are being touted as going against the Innova. This is interesting because the models being touted aren’t exactly in the same segment. Which begs the question, are these segments even realistic anymore? Vehicles are so multi-use nowadays we are constantly seeing cars and SUVs and people movers that may well be a better choice when compared to a vehicle in a different segment. In our Cars Casually chat, we were struggling to define what the key factors actually were for what vehicle fits where. Honestly, in some countries it is just a case of what people call a segment. One market’s minivan is another market’s people mover. The Innova, in its probably purest form, is just a good, reliable multi-use vehicle. In years past, that would have been a van or a minivan. Nowadays, the Innova is pretty much just the Innova, with competition closing in from all sides. Or just relinquishing completely sometimes. There is something I have noticed over the years.

If you looked at what many future-looking designers saw as the vehicles of tomorrow, you would basically see kind of a bulbous shape that was larger in the back than in the front. This wouldn’t necessarily be what the car designers showed, as they have other needs and demands. But if you look at what urban planners or futurists would portray, it would be that kind of three-rows-possible van-like mass. On one hand hugely boring, on the other hand hugely flexible and useful. As we have said, the market has changed around the Innova. The contenders usually go at it with good helpings of styling or features or a much more friendly payment experience up front. But what they are up against is a heritage of trust and consistency that often outweighs the demand for other things, and for which many are willing to pay extra. The buyers are changing as well. Many do not see that heritage of trust, or perhaps they do not put as much importance to it and are willing to try the sleek newcomers with all the right lines, curves, gadgetry and price tags. A lot of people think that the changes or additions to this new Innova are a good response to what the market wants. And since the competition is answering consumer demands, often within months nowadays, this is all hopefully a sign of an ocean that raises all boats. The end result should be better for all that actually purchase the cars. Stay safe, stay healthy, be kind.

The Lexus IS 300h: Luxury Sports Sedan Electrified

L

exus has now sold almost 2 million self-charging luxury hybrid cars since launching its first one in 2004. It has taken significant steps in an industry that has strongly leaned towards electrification and sustainability in recent years. The clever engineering of Lexus’ hybrid technology has answered the call for the maximization fuel efficiency and the lowering of emissions while upholding the craftsmanship detrimental to luxury vehicles. Since then, such developments have been exemplified in models like the Lexus IS, which has long been a signature nameplate for the Japanese luxury automaker worldwide. The Lexus IS first saw the marriage between a gasoline engine and an electric motor on its third-generation model launched in 2013. When it first debuted in 1998, the IS was meant to rival the European luxury sport sedans that have long-dominated the global market. This time, however, the IS now boasted hybrid technology under its belt. As Lexus DNA goes, the IS embodies elegance and sportiness while being powered by sustainable energy. Made available by Lexus Manila is the new IS300h sports sedan—born and bred at the Shimoyama Technical Center. The research and development headquarters recreates the toughest and most challenging roads in the world in order to build the agile and exhilarating IS. The vehicle’s drive and

responsive handling translate to profound experiences on the road that touches the soul. Under the hood of the IS 300h is a 2.5-liter direct injection engine and a self-charging electric motor paired with Lexus’ E-CVT. Underpinning include front double wishbone and rear multilink suspension that were also developed at Shimoyama. All this allow for a maximum power output of 220 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid sports sedan clocks in at just 8.7 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. The IS 300h packs a ton of unassuming excitement while still being capable of excellent emissions and green mobility brought about by its full EV mode. The elevated driving experience brought about by precise handling and linear power delivery are accompanied by signature Lexus exterior lines and an exquisite cabin. Beginning with the 2020 model year, Lexus incorporated larger bodywork, new headlamps with fullwidth taillamps, and a more dynamic spindle grille on the IS. The hybrid identity is delicately marked on the signature Lexus emblem upfront with a subtle blue shade. The vehicle also sits on new signature 18-inch wheels finished in shiny, silver metallic coating. Evidenced by the materials, stitching, and overall construction, the philosophy of takumi master craftsmen continuously radiate in the interior of the vehicle for exceptional comfort,

luxury, and convenience. At P2,978,000, the IS300h is the most affordable hybrid in Lexus’ local stable. And we must admit, this isn’t your usual ‘entry-level’ vehicle. Convenience amenities include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity with Voice Recognition. It also has the upgraded driver-assistance systems and standard blind-spot monitoring have been made available in the vehicle. The physical gauge on the instrument cluster moves from its stationary position in the middle towards the left or right with the push of a button—demonstrating Lexus’ passion in assimilating subtle yet influential pieces in creating its luxury sport vehicles. One of the most remarkable traits of the Lexus IS is in its ability to exude elegance eccentricity while leaving behind fewer carbon emissions at 122 g/km. The Lexus Hybrid Drive creates electric energy from the kinetic energy produced when braking or decelerating. The Lexus IS is an exemplification of the Japanese luxury automaker’s proven engineering—a unique and mesmerizing exterior, carefully crafted interior, and a performance that promises to emanate excitement. Lexus continues to strive in giving us the best of all worlds. For Inquiries: (02) 8856-5050

Finally Sold My First Car

“Though I still appreciate a good drive, I believe a decade’s worth of changes was enough to make me change my car.”

MARCH-APRIL 2021 • C-MAGAZINE.COM

hose who know me, know that I’ve been driving the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 V6 for a decade. For quite some time, I have always told myself that I would sell the car, but never did for the simple reason that I enjoyed every minute with it. Don’t get me wrong, up to the last day, I loved the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. By no means was it a perfect car, but it had a lot of character behind it. As a model, it put Hyundai on the map while showing that it was a brand to reckon with. As for the car itself, it gave sportscar-like moves without feeling small. I’ve done it all with this car. I raced it, drifted it, crashed it, fixed it, and lived with it. But I guess as I grew in this industry, I matured in more ways than one. I started to see the importance of practicality and

T

longevity. I got to see the industry secrets on what makes a car viable for the years to come. But I guess most of all, my interests have simply changed. If you met me a decade ago, you would have seen my interest was all about going fast and attacking the track as efficiently as possible. Back then, the smooth drive of a sports car was what made me smile. Though I still appreciate a good drive, I believe a decade’s worth of changes were enough to make me change my car. I teared up a bit as I saw my first car drive off. In fact, part of me wanted to take it back. But that’s the thing: we sell our cars to get either something better or different. In this case, it is a bit of both. As I close the chapter of my automotive life with the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, I am excited for things to come with my new car as I write a new chapter in life with it.

Full Circle

aybe it’s because of the pandemic, or maybe because of peer pressure, or perhaps a little bit of both, but I’ve recently taken up recreational bike riding. Yes, my personal transportation journey has come full circle from the time I was a 6-year old on training wheels. Through this quarantine period, riding bicycles has become a fad as quickly as it has become a necessity. During the early days of the lockdown, using a bicycle was highly encouraged by the Department of Transportation and the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, as public transportation was put to a halt. It became the only mode of transportation for a lot of people to get to the places they needed to be. As a result, many public roads now have dedicated bike lanes to accommodate the rise in popularity, which encouraged even more people to start riding bikes. Likewise, those who wished to keep in shape turned to riding bicycles as a form of exercise, as going to the gym and group sports

M

such as basketball continue to be discouraged to this day. Now, as we approach our 1-year community quarantine anniversary, bike riding has developed into a community-based activity, where people can come together and share experiences safely. Of course, a sudden uptick in bicycle riders does have its share of challenges. Without proper guidelines and enforced laws or rules on bicycle riding, we’re often seeing bike riders on main roads and sometimes, fastmoving highways. Most of the time, these riders aren’t equipped with the necessary safety gear, or even a basic helmet. And since biking together in groups has quickly risen in popularity, it’s now common to see clumps of bike riders clogging up roads and streets by disregarding bike lanes completely, deciding instead to ride in the middle of the road. I’m not blaming them though. I mean, before I got back to riding bikes recreationally, blaming them was easy. It’s easy to dismiss them as traffic-causing nuisances, where driving a car near them meant I had to be extra vigilant to be sure I didn’t accidentally hit one of them if they

decided to swerve into my lane suddenly. But getting into bike riding has shown me that there are groups of bike riders who know proper etiquette and safety protocols. Those who effectively use their hands to indicate where they intend to turn, those who study routes beforehand so they know not to suddenly swerve two lanes to turn into their street, those who don’t haphazardly beat red lights. And I’ve come to realize that it all boils down to effectively imparting the necessary information. I had the privilege of being on bike rides with responsible bike riders, while a vast majority of bike riders out there probably have not. Just like with anything new that involves personal modes of transportation, whether it’s electric scooters, or a sudden boom in bicycle riders, we need a heavy dose of patience as the system catches up. Patience as we wait for local laws to catch up to make things safer for both bike riders and car drivers, patience as we hope for government units to do better at informing the public of basic bike etiquette and safety, and patience as these new riders learn the right way to do things.

Georges B. Ramirez S E N I O R E D I TO R

Exciting Times

021 rolled in, and for the auto industry and those in the market for a vehicle, it’s been changing and evolving rapidly. Technology is at a crossroads. Those who set the pace are blazing away with not just improved tech and vehicles, but even the very essence of what vehicles mean to us, is also changing. The manner by which we propel them, configure them, shape them, build them, and even use them is up for change. There is nothing holding back the ideas of “out-of-the-box” thinkers. As it were, the global industry was and is ripe for change, and 2020 sent it over the edge. I suppose the horrific drop in sales and eagerness to re-establish market share made all those dynamic thinkers put their thinking caps on overdrive. Strangely, in the local scene, it seems our very crippled industry will be getting hit with a bond/tax burden before it has a chance to recover. Really beyond my comprehension. It’s like asking some of your economic soldiers to carry an extra load after just taking a nearly fatal blow. Perhaps some food, water, and vitamins would have been the logical option. But like the old dog that got kicked when he

2I

was down, they just dust off and carry on… Regardless, from the consumers’ perspective, you may not get much of a price break, but will probably see a lot more new products being introduced into the market, as well as new tech options being loaded into the standard models. Clearly, it’s a buyer market once again. Another component that is maturing are the improvements of Chinese automakers. Being the manufacturing capital of the world has its advantages. Manufacturing the cars of the oldest and best automakers is a great foundation to start from. They also have to deal with and have access to all the various subcontractors that supply all the components used in the manufacturing process. The sheer volume of vehicles they manufacture for others, and now their own, is mind-boggling. With that alone, they have been catching up to the established brands at a rate never seen before. Another aspect that gives Chinese automakers a nitro boost, if you will, is when they started buying and owning many of the iconic and even institutional car companies. At that point, they had access to all those dynamic, leading-edge thinkers and engineers, along with the finances and

the will to develop top-notch machines. We have already seen an example of this when Geely purchased Volvo and created the Chinese-Swedish car company, Lynk & Co., which actually took top honors in the World Touring Car Race in the Macao Grand Prix weekend. What a success! There will naturally be more of this to come, though this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a takeover. It simply means there are going to be a few more players in the land of the giants, which will certainly keep everyone on their toes. The Global industries’ efforts in electric propulsion technology continue to move faster than expected. Faster, with longer range, more efficient, and easier to use. They are also available in just about the full spectrum of vehicle types, and so, Audi developed a full range of models to be made available in some markets. The other exciting things are the changes that disrupt even the essences of what we perceive a car to be. Driver-less cars, flying cars, you name it! If someone can imagine it, it could be a possibility. I suppose that could be scary, too! But, it is certainly exciting. As for here and now, I am looking forward to seeing what the local distributors are going to be surprising us with in 2021…

The Case of Electric Vehicles in the Philippines

uying and driving an Electric Vehicle (EV) is like giving the Earth a tight and sincere hug. Gasoline-powered vehicles have long been significant contributors to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, so the continued advancements engineers have made on electric vehicles are breaths of fresh air. EVs have definitely made significant technological strides since they were first introduced. They have come a long way from the stereotype of being boring and unappealing—just look at the Jaguar I-PACE and Porsche Taycan. The price gaps between EVs and vehicles with the conventional Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) have also gotten tighter. For instance, at PhP 7,590,000, the Jaguar I-PACE isn’t far off from other Jaguar and Land Rover luxury SUVs. You get the same premium amenities, plush cabin, and of course, driving excitement, but without the carbon footprint. Stronger government

B

policies and incentives also encourage consumers to make the switch. We’ve seen more electric tricycles and electric jeeps ply local roads in recently. Local Government Units (LGUs) have answered the call by promoting commuter routes taken be these vehicles. Infrastructure development is an ongoing process and the increased presence of e-trikes and e-jeeps are fruits of the advancements we have made. A recent ASEAN study commissioned by Nissan show that 37 percent of non-electric vehicle owners are considering making the switch in the next three years, while 45 percent feel strongly toward the environment and climate change. The top motivating factor include a greater impact on reducing carbon emissions. I understand that many still have concerns about infrastructure but the legislators have actually already proposed laws to promote EVs through Senate Bill No. 1382, or the “Electric Vehicles and Charging Station Act.” The proposed law includes tax exemptions for manufacturing and importing EVs, exemption from number coding schemes, and allotted

parking spots for electric vehicles in private and public buildings. If sustainability and saving the planet isn’t enough of a reason for you to make that switch, keep in mind that electricity is generally cheaper than gasoline. This becomes especially beneficial to those who have solar panels in their homes. They can simply leave their cars charging overnight and wake up to a “full tank.” Moreover, EVs also have less oiled components so oil changes related to ICE will be a thing of the past. As more manufacturers introduce EVs to their local lineups, green motoring will only become more attainable as consumers would have more options to choose from. We’ve already seen the initiative from a number of European, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean car companies present in the country. As time goes by, electric vehicles will only continue to become practical options for the contemporary consumer. Clean transportation is the future and it’s surely worthwhile to inform ourselves of where we currently stand.

Toyota President Disapproves Sexist Comments

hat can I say? It’s a man’s world. It long has been, and still pretty much is. But yes... it’s changing. And this change is good. If you are a woman, it’s an exciting time to be alive. Take the case of the recent criticism expressed by the President of Toyota Motor Corporation — Mr. Akio Toyoda — towards the sexist remarks of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics President, Mr. Yoshiro Mori. During a press conference of the current Japanese Olympic Committee, 83-year old Mori had publicly stated that women talk too much in meetings, and that they have difficulty in speaking concisely. He further insinuated that during board meetings that include a lot of women, the meetings take so much time. Moreover, Mori is quoted by the Asahi Shimbun as saying “We have about seven women at the Organizing Committee, but everyone understands their place.” All these inappropriate remarks amid the obvious fact that there already exists a regrettable lack of female representation in the Olympic Organizing Committee’s senior roles.

W

22

MARCH-APRIL 2021 • C-MAGAZINE.COM

But the Japanese-hosted Olympics’ major sponsors were quick to retaliate with their own set of remarks. Among those immediately in the spotlight was Toyota’s President, Akio Toyoda, who through a statement that was delivered by one of his executives during a company briefing, expressed that: “We are disappointed by the recent comments from the President of TOCOG (Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games), which are contrary to the values that Toyota respects and supports.” Furthering that Mori’s statements go against “...the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic games, which through sports aim to create a peaceful and an inclusive society without discrimination in which anyone can participate.” Toyota Motor Corporation is a worldwide Olympic sponsor and high-profile Tokyo Olympics sponsor. They had planned to highlight their fuel cell technology to the world by powering the upcoming Olympic Flame with hydrogen. Other Japanese high-profile executives also chimed in to express their disapproval of Mori’s comments. Asahi Holdings (the holding company of Asahi Breweries) remarked that Mori’s comments were “disappointing and

inappropriate considering the spirit of gender equality espoused” by the games. Meanwhile, an executive from Eneos, a Japanese oil and metals company, expressed that he “deplored the sexist remarks from a viewpoint of respect for human rights.” Despite initially refusing to resign, Mori eventually did, after the ever-increasing backlash from the local and international community. He attempted to appoint his successor as the 84-year old ‘mayor’ of the Tokyo Athletes Village, Saburo Kawabuchi, but this attempt was foiled as the Japanese Prime Minister reportedly suggested appointing a woman, or a younger man to inherit the role. Fuji News Network cited a government source as saying, “We can’t give the impression that things have changed unless we install a woman or see a generational shift.” Therefore, in the spirit of transparency, the Japanese organizing committee is setting up a panel comprised of an equal number of male and female participants, to select Mori’s replacement. Public resignations and the reduction of cultural sexism are a big deal in Japanese society — Congratulations to the people of the world for another small step forward!

MARCH-APRIL 2021 • C-MAGAZINE.COM

THE ALL-NEW MAXUS D60 mid-size crossover is, without a doubt, the most attractive and alluring product that the brand has ever produced since full production began in 2011 in Shanghai, China. That is also taking into consideration all the vehicles produced in the past, which were mostly commercial, and before SAIC Motors purchased Leyland DAF Vans (LDV Group Limited) from Birmingham, England in 2010. It only makes sense that SAIC Motors would maximize on its assets to reduce costs and

increase reliability/dependability to optimize profits. SAIC builds and sells multiple vehicles under a variety of brands that they own as well as manufacture as partners for General Motors (Buick, Chevrolet, and Opel until it was sold to the Stellantis Group), Baojin, Maxus, Morris Garage (MG), Roewe, Iveco, Škoda, Volkswagen, Wuling, and Yuejin. So literally, SAIC has all the economies of scale at their disposal: technology, expertise, research, development, state backing and financing to successfully produce great vehicles at very competitive pricing. One example of this excellent alchemy is SAIC’s own new 10-speed EDU II automatic gearbox, which consists of 6 speeds for the gasoline engine and 4 speeds for the electric motor which will be used in their new hybrid vehicles. Much like the Maxus G50 MPV, which shares the same overachieving joint Opel and SAIC-designed direct injection 1.5-liter intercooled turbo engine mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that are also used in MG vehicles sold in our market, the very well designed D60 distances itself by using the new extended longer wheelbase (+60 mm) chassis with fully independent suspension on all corners first applied to the MG/Roewe RX5 Max which is not sold in our Philippine market. So, the Maxus D60 is 102 mm longer, 36 mm wider, and 6 mm taller than the MG RX5. The top spec MG RX5 Alpha costs P40,888,00 more than the current top-range Maxus D60

Elite and provides only the panoramic roof as an advantage. The D60 Elite is not just better looking, even more equipped, and larger with an extra 2-adult capacity in the third-row but it even rides with more comfort and grip thanks to larger 235/55R18 100V Dunlop ST30 Grandtrek tires on unique complex alloys compared to the simpler units on the RX5 wrapped with Michelin Primacy 3ST 235/50R18 97W tires. The D60 Pro comes with more somber 17-inch alloys wrapped with 215/65R17 99V Hankook DynaPro HP2 tires. We tested both the Maxus D60 Pro (P1,148,000.00) in Wace Red, and Elite (P1,258,000.00) in its signature Competitive Orange. For P110,000 more than the Pro variant, the D60 Elite is worth every cent of the difference and then some. Let me count the ways; let’s begin with the fabulous cobweb front grille, full LED lighting for both front and rear (sequential too!), an impressively dressed engine bay with hood struts, a genuine dual exhaust that matches the exit pipes with the angled chrome rear bumper bezels, tasteful standard stepboards, contrasting stitched leather variable seating for 7 adults, an electric rearview mirror, smart key with push start ignition, powered mirrors, red painted brake calipers, and additional front parking sonar. Both models come with 5 year or 100,000 kms warranty (whichever comes first). The Maxus D60 Elite is the very best fullfeatured mid-size crossover in its class. At the moment, the Maxus D60 Elite is the most spacious, most comprehensive, and most balanced in packaging in the enormous field of crossovers in our market. It has everything we liked about the MG RX5 Alpha and more for less money.

SPECIFICATIONS — 2021 Maxus D60 Elite Engine: Inline-4, 1498 cc, dohc 16V, Direct Injection Intercooled Turbo, 7-speed DCT | Max Power: 166 bhp @ 5500 rpm | Max Torque: 184 lb-ft @ 1700-4300 rpm 0-100 km/h (0-62mph): 9.8 sec. | Top Speed: 200 km/h (125 mph) | Fuel Mileage: 7L/100 kms. overall | Price as Tested: PhP 1,258,000.00 Plus: Outstanding value, well-appointed, surprising athleticism, comfortable, and very good-looking. | Minus: Some modest trim issues, fairly dark parking video output, belligerent transmission, no free PMS. |

SUBARU WRX EYESIGHT The Elusive Icon

Words by Kevin C. Limjoco Photos by Andréas N. Delos Reyes

IT WAS SO VISCERALLY REFRESHING to get behind the steering wheel of the current Subaru WRX (VA) after reviewing a string of crossovers. To hear and feel the grunt of the force-fed boxer was elating. I am still a huge fan of force-induced Subarus! Our Ice Silver Metallic test unit had the updated Eyesight Driver Assist feature set, new 18” x 8.5J Dark Gun Metallic alloys wrapped with tenacious 245/40R18 97W Dunlop Sport Maxx RT tires, Auto Vehicle Hold toggle, improved trunk release, and facelifted front bumper with redesigned LED fog lamps and bezels. Until the all-new Subaru WRX/STi models are finally launched using the Subaru Global Platform (already used in the current Outback, Impreza, XV/Crosstrek, Ascent/Evoltis, and Forester) projected to still be at least another year away for our market, the WRX and its more powerful STi brother will soldier on a bit longer. If you are a staunch enthusiast who still pines for or never has truly experienced the unique and rewarding characteristics of a

genuine World Rally Championship-inspired high-performance sedan, this is your last chance to buy this elusive icon. Despite its continuous updates, the WRX is truly a niche player with extremely deep driving abilities. If you are looking for a daily compact sedan workhorse teeming with the latest gadgetry and passenger comforts, then the WRX is not for you. The properly substantial steering response and obvious engine notes alone may scare most

potential, more youthful buyers. When these same buyers look at the modest 5.9-inch Multifunction central infotainment display despite having current connectivity to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, they would be disappointed when they compare it to the systems available in much less expensive cars. Thankfully, the auxiliary front view Multifunction Display above the center screen is useful for increased frontal visibility at intersections and when parking together

with the traditional guided rear camera. The same display also projects a myriad of track driver information. Active Torque Vectoring is standard and helps assist less experienced drivers enjoy the WRX with active safety but it won’t change physics, so if you drive recklessly you only have yourself to blame. For aesthetics, more load capacity, and ride comfort, the Subaru Levorg sport wagon model that shares almost all the mechanical goodness may be a better option. The award-winning Levorg is the new sweet spot in the Subaru family in terms of core-value dynamic performance combined with versatility. The WRX is for purists who desire to have a tangible connection with their cars and are willing to compromise on ride comfort and cabin noise to get that extra dynamic performance. The 5-seater cabin, like before, is best enjoyed 4-up. There are no rear aircon vents for the rear seats, and the 6-speaker audio quality is just satisfactory. The CVT transmission is very smooth and routes power via Subaru’s VTD-AWD system with a split of 45/55 front/rear. Much like in other Subaru models, you can adjust the car’s behavior using the selectable SI drive modes: Intelligent, Sport, and Sport Sharp, managed by steering wheel-mounted shift paddles when also required. Using the Sport Sharp (S#) mode, the CVT will simulate 8-gear ratios. The EyeSight Driver Assist actively controls additional safety functions such as pre-collision braking, pre-collision throttle management, lane keep assist with sway warning, and adaptive cruise control. Speed management is handled by dual-piston front and single-piston rear calipers, 4-sensor ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) on 12.4-inch front and 11.8-inch rear discs. The Subaru WRX has certainly matured over the years yet soulfully remains unique and engaging. With new road arteries opening up all over the archipelago, new owners have much to look forward to in exploring our country at the potential pace that only an advanced all-wheel-drive rally-car can offer. CHERY TIGGO 2

Not your usual small crossover Words and photos by Paolo de Borja

NOW UNDER NEW DISTRIBUTORSHIP, Chery Philippines has brought in a fresh lineup of bang-for-the-buck crossovers and SUVs. As it stands, it has yet to fully compete with Japanese and Korean counterparts when it comes to brand recognition and consumer trust. The company has been working to address this by equipping their local vehicles with the basic requirements modern consumers look for in a car — loaded equipment and an unrivaled extra-long powertrain warranty of 10 years.

This is where the Chery Tiggo 2 comes in. At PhP 863,000, the subcompact crossover is the automaker’s most affordable model in a country that’s gone crossover and SUV crazy. Its strategic pricing makes those who are eyeing economy sedans like the Vios or Mirage think twice about their mainstream choices. Sure, Chery has yet to earn the trust that Toyota and Mitsubishi have held among consumers but it strives to make up for it in a number of ways. The looks are something worth mentioning when talking about the Tiggo 2. It looks like a proper crossover when it comes to stance— not too high nor too low that it may resemble a hatchback with roof rails and black body cladding. Headlamps are equipped with halogen projectors but it does sport daytime running lights where you’d usually find the foglamps.

Just the right amount of chrome garnishes is present on the front grille and, foglamp housings, and on the rear. The small but unique taillamps fit quite nicely with the compact dimensions of the vehicle as well. Ground clearance clocks in at 186 mm and you also get 16-inch two-tone aluminum wheels. The twotone color scheme in black and white finish off the small European appeal of the Tiggo 2. There’s no shortage of small crossovers in the local market considering Filipinos’ newfound appreciation for them. Chery’s take on the segment tells you that it’s out to prove its worthiness in the pack. The Tiggo 2’s cabin isn’t the most extensively equipped but it does have a few interesting points. It has the standard 8-inch touchscreen you’ve grown accustomed to in modern cars. However, it lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that could have increased the vehicle’s appeal. It does, however, have cruise control. Safety features include two airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control, traction control, emergency brake assist, emergency signal system, hill start assist, and rear sensors with a backup camera. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather as well — a huge plus in this segment. With so many similar vehicles in the same tempting price points, even the smallest details make a difference. Under the hood is a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine connected to a 4-speed automatic transmission. As engines such as this go, its highlights aren’t really on excitement, but in comfort and overall usability. The Tiggo 2 is a comfortable and practical car for your Point A to Point B driving — but with more features than you’d expect. The drive does not impress you yet you wouldn’t mind driving it on a daily basis whether on city roads or on expressways. All in all, the overall package and experience you get on the Chery Tiggo 2 supersedes the P863,000 price tag. And in this modern and competitive automotive scene, a vehicle’s value-for-money cannot be understated.

SSANGYONG KORANDO 1.6 DIESEL PREMIUM Almost a Home Run

Words and photos by Chris Van Hoven

SSANGYONG IS ONE OF THOSE automotive companies that I’ve been following for quite some time now. They’re veritable underdogs in the industry, releasing impressive products without much fanfare or recognition. It’s a shame, really, since their offerings are good enough to be taken seriously as legitimate alternatives to the usual run-of-the-mill suggestions that are thrown around, especially when talking about SUVs, pick-ups, and crossovers. So, when I got the opportunity to try out the new Ssangyong Korando 1.6 Diesel Premium, I jumped at the chance. Compared to the other Korean automotive marques, Hyundai and Kia, Ssangyong has maintained a relatively low profile. Truth be told, the Korando brand is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as Korea’s longest surviving name plate. Establishing themselves as “Korea’s SUV Specialist”, Ssangyong’s

directional focus has done well for them so far, and they’ve applied all the things they’ve learned to this 4th generation Ssanygong Korando. Styling wise, the Korando has come a long way from its awkwardly designed past. Today’s Korando is sleek and as stylish as any of the best-looking crossovers available. From the sloping roofline and thick C-pillar to the two-tone cladding and muscular curvatures on its side profile, Ssangyong has done an admirable job with injecting their own unique aesthetic to the Korando’s overall look. Large 18-inch wheels on 225/55R18 tires contribute to its sporty appeal as well. Inside, we’re treated to more of Ssangyong’s unique styling nuances. The top-of-the-line Diesel Premium variant features a large 10.25inch instrument cluster that readily offers pertinent information via a reasonably sharp and legible screen. It’s easy to find a comfortable

seating position thanks to 8-way power adjustable seats for both driver and passenger, and space at the 2nd row is generous even for three occupants. Both rear seats can be folded down to present a flat loading area for large gear or cargo. It was odd to notice, however, that the Korando doesn’t come with any ISOFIX anchor points on the second row seats. These were notably absent in the 7-seater Ssangyong Rexton as well, and it’s disappointing to see that Ssangyong still hasn’t included them here, with parents having to use old fashioned seat belts to secure their child seats. Nevertheless, build quality is top notch throughout the cabin, but Ssangyong continues to use hard plastics in their interior. While one can argue that these materials will stand the test of time better, it would be nice to see some premium soft-touch materials used, especially at this price range. The 8-inch infotainment display is great, and it’s fantastic to see that Ssangyong has equipped both diesel variants with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. Mechanically, the Ssangyong Korando is excellent. It features ventilated disc brakes up front and solid discs at the rear, as well as fully independent suspension. Combined with a smooth-revving and peppy 1.6-liter diesel engine that produces 134 bhp and 239 lb-ft of torque mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission, the Ssangyong Korando is a spirited and agile performer on the lower end of the power band. Get up to highway speed and you’ll notice the performance start to fade, though it’s certainly nothing to complain about. The Korando also returns a generally comfortable ride, though you’ll feel road imperfections a bit more than its competitors. Steering feel and response is excellent, however. As a package, the Ssangyong Korando is an excellent crossover with one glaring obstacle keeping it from joining the best out there: its price. At P1,770,000, it becomes difficult to justify when compared to the price points of similar offerings from other brands in the segment. And while it does come with standard safety equipment such as dual airbags, ABS, parking sensors and a rear camera, I feel as though this is the bare minimum that one can expect from a top-of-the-line offering in its class, especially at this price range. At least it comes with a 5-year warranty and 3 years of free service to help ease the pain a bit.

SPECIFICATIONS — 2021 Ssangyong Korando 1.6 Diesel Premium Engine: Inline-4, 1597 cc, dohc 16V, Direct Injection Intercooled E-VGT Turbodiesel, 6-speed AT | Max Power: 134 bhp @ 4000 rpm | Max Torque: 239 lb-ft @ 1500-2500 rpm 0-100 km/h (0-62mph): 10.8 sec. | Top Speed: 185 km/h (115 mph) | Fuel Mileage: 12 km/L overall | Price as Tested: PhP 1,770,000.00 | Plus: Great features, fun to drive, solid build quality, punchy and economical engine, 3 years free service. | Minus: Not the most comfortable in its class, pricing is not competitive. |

2021 TOYOTA INNOVA

TAKING ON ALL CHALLENGERS CHRIS VAN HOVEN NICOLAS CALANOC AND C! TEAM WORDS

PHOTOS

If you asked me to create a top ten list of the country’s most important cars, the Toyota Innova would certainly find itself as one of the top three, if not at the top of the list entirely. Introduced to the local market in 2005, it served as the replacement for the muchloved Toyota Revo / Tamaraw FX as the country’s perennial “do-everything” vehicle. Built with a body-on-frame chassis constructed from Toyota’s IMV platform together with the Toyota Hilux and Fortuner, the Innova’s spacious room for seven passengers, affordable maintenance costs, and fuelefficient diesel engine proved to be a winning formula for Filipino families across the nation. In fact, I’m willing to make a bet that you either know someone who owns a Toyota Innova, or own one yourself. To this day, the Toyota Innova has consistently ranked as the country’s top five best-selling cars of each passing year, and certainly ranks as the best-selling MPV in the market, with over 240,000 units sold. Toyota has refreshed their Innova for 2021, and it comes with some notable updates. On the outside, the new Innova gets a redesigned, larger front grille coinciding with a more dynamic bumper and updated turn signal lights. The top-ofthe-line V variant also gets new daytime running lights to go with its LED headlights and LED front fog lamps. Both V and G grades get a distinct handle garnish at the rear, which connects the two taillights. The V variant rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with 215/55 R17 tires, while the G and E grades get redesigned 16-inch alloy wheels on 205/65R16 tires.

THE NEW CHALLENGERS

Naturally, with success comes those who want a piece of the pie, and the Toyota Innova has had no shortage of challengers to the throne. Throughout the years, various manufacturers have introduced their own versions of “Innova killers”, hoping to win the affection and loyalty that the Innova has enjoyed. But whether it’s for a lack of features, out of reach pricing, or simply the herculean task of overcoming Toyota’s brand loyalty, they’ve come short every time. With the recent introduction of several impressive offerings from several manufacturers, however, the fight for the status of MPV King is tougher than ever.

MAXUS G50

MAXUS D60

Coming in at just PhP 1,288,000 for the top-ofthe-line “Premium” variant, the Maxus G50 is a modern take on the MPV segment. It boasts excellent space for passengers and cargo, capable of seating eight passengers comfortably. Its 12.3-inch infotainment screen is one of the largest in the segment, and it also comes with nice bonuses such as a panoramic sunroof, cruise control, leather seats, and a 360-degree camera – features not found on the Toyota Innova. It’s a pretty even match in terms of safety as well, as it’s equipped with six airbags, ABS, traction control, and hill hold assist.

While the Maxus G50 certainly “looks” the MPV part, its crossover sibling, the D60, shares a lot of its underpinnings with the G50 and is a logical competitor to the Innova’s segment as well. Its 2,760mm wheelbase is just slightly longer than the Innova’s, and its 7-seater capacity and higher ground clearance make it just as practical. The Maxus D60 1.5T Elite variant has a fully independent suspension, disc brakes at the front and rear, large 18-inch alloy wheels, ABS, traction control, hill start assist, rear and front parking sensors, a rearview camera projected via an 8-inch touchscreen monitor, and four airbags. It may not measure up to the rest in terms of features, but it beats everyone in terms of pricing – coming in at only PhP 1,258,000 for the top-of-theline variant.

34

GEELY OKAVANGO Though inching more towards crossover territory, the Geely Okavango is still very much an MPV in crossover clothes. As the largest offering in the MPV segment, the Geely Okavango has a generous amount of space for seven passengers plus luggage. In terms of features, the top-ofthe-line Urban Plus variant comes with an impressive 60-inch panoramic sunroof and Adaptive Drive Beam Matrix LED headlights, which allow the headlight beams to follow your turns and automatically adjust so as not to blind oncoming traffic. The Geely Okavango Urban Plus features a 12.3-inch fully digital, high-resolution instrument panel that relays driving information, and is highly customizable, as well as 6-way power and 4-way power adjustable leather seats for the driver and passenger. It also comes with a 10.25-inch infotainment touch-screen system that powers eight speakers as well as complete safety features such as six airbags, hill descent control, hill start assist, and stability control – all for PhP 1,478,000.

MARCH-APRIL 2021 • C-MAGAZINE.COM

CHERY TIGGO 8 Like the Maxus D60, the Chery Tiggo’s aesthetics veer more towards the SUV/ crossover side, but the length of its wheelbase, front-wheel drive characteristics, and 7-seater capability make it an excellent alternative choice to the Toyota Innova. The top-of-the-line variant, the Tiggo 8 Lux Ex, comes with a large 10.25-inch infotainment system powering six speakers, automatic power tailgate, 6-way power adjustable leather seats, large 18-inch wheels, fully independent suspension, disc brakes at the front and rear, and a complete suite of safety features such as six airbags, ABS, stability control, and hill descent assist, with an SRP of PhP 1,340,000.

2021 TOYOTA INNOVA 2.8L V DIESEL Engine: Inline-4 Location: Front, Longitudinal

GAC GN6 The latest entry into the field of Innova challengers is from GAC, with their GN6 providing a spacious ride for seven passengers. Like the rest of the previous examples, the GN6 comes loaded with modern features, such as active ambient noise cancellation in the cabin, a 7-inch instrument cluster and 8-inch infotainment system with Apple Carplay connectivity, cruise control, a sunroof, and disc brakes all around. For safety, the GAC GN6 comes with front dual and side airbags, stability control, ABS, traction control, hill ascend and descent controls, parking sensors, a rearview camera, and brake hold assist. The GAC GN6 is priced at PhP 1,480,000, which comes in as one of the more expensive options, though still significantly less than the Innova’s top-of-theline V variant.

Inside, the V and G variants receive a new two-tone fabric and door panel combination of noble brown and black with everything else remaining largely the same. The V and G variants still feature a foldable seat back table with cup holders, while the V variant still maintains captain seats for the second row. Perhaps the most interesting and noteworthy addition to the Innova range is the inclusion of Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity for the V, G, and E variants from a 7-inch touchscreen system that powers six speakers. Together with its rearview camera, the new Innova is a huge step towards a more modern, competitive direction in terms of convenience and connectivity features. In terms of engine choices, Toyota has done away with the 2.0-liter gasoline engine in favor of an all-diesel lineup. All variants of the new Toyota Innova will now come with the tried and tested 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV turbo diesel engine that produces 172 bhp and 266 lb-ft of torque for the automatic variants while manual transmission variants get slightly less at 168 bhp and 253 lb-ft of torque.

C! RATING 10/10 PLUS

“Updated to address concerns that the previous model had, the Toyota Innova is equipped to remain at the top of the MPV segment, combining a rock solid platform and chassis, top-notch build quality, incredible practicality.. ”

Proven reliability, easy maintenance, durable platform, responsive engine, updated infotainment system

MINUS

For the price, we need improved cameras, rear disc brakes, and LED signature tail lights.

Safety features wise, the new Toyota Innova remains mostly the same, though still quite impressive. The top-ofthe-line V variant gets seven airbags as standard, with three airbags for the rest of the lineup, while ABS, Vehicle Stability Control, Hill-Start Assist Control, and ISOFIX tethers come standard for the entire range. The V and G variants also get a much-needed reverse camera. Updated to address concerns that the previous model had, the Toyota Innova is equipped to remain at the top of the MPV segment, combining a rock solid platform and chassis, top-notch build quality, incredible practicality, and Toyota’s proven reliability and longevity to produce a package that will continue to be difficult to beat.

HOPEFULLY JAGUAR PHILIPPINES will extend its huge P501,112.00 promotional discount past the end of February 2021 or until supplies last. As a premium executive mid-size saloon, the Jaguar XF (X260) is often overlooked and underappreciated principally because of its acquisition cost. It is a wonderfully seductive and opulent alternative that soaks up our challenging Philippine road conditions better than most of its peers despite its sporty suspension tuning. The meaty 245/45R18 100Y Good Year Eagle F1 rolling stock can easily withstand the road punishment. With over 80% new parts and equipment compared to its predecessor, the rigid 75% aluminum structured Jaguar XF fluidly slices the wind too with a .26 drag coefficient. The modestly tuned direct injection 2.0-liter turbo engine produces 198 bhp @ 5500 rpm and 236 lb-ft @ 1200-4000 rpm, channeling the healthy power through a slick 8-speed automatic

transmission transmitted to the rear wheels. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 7.8 seconds with a top speed of 235 km/h is more than enough for those weekend jaunts out of town. The excellent 380-watt 11-speaker Meridian infotainment system with 10.2-inch screen, adjustable ambient cabin lights, digital instruments, the comprehensive equipment packaging, and lovely perforated Taurus brown leather seats are all excellent companions on extended road trips. Every moment in a Jaguar is special.

not to mention the image the wagon got from movies like National Lampoon’s Vacation and that hideous family jalopy. Yet times have changed. We now have sexy, svelte wagons. One good example is the Mazda 6 Sports Wagon. Just one look and you will not only see the Kodo Soul of Motion design cues but a profile and details that make you want to stop and stare. That sexy rear end, however, does come at the expense of space. What the Mazda does offer is fun behind the wheel. You can take your family and gear out on a road trip in comfort while enjoying the pull of that 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated Skyactiv-G engine mated to a 6-speed Skyactiv gearbox with Sport Mode. Plus, there’s G-Vectoring Control to keep your passengers from feeling car sick while you have a bit of fun (safely, of course). At P1,995,000, you get a premium mid-size wagon with all the toys. And for once, it’s not a crossover.

It’s easy to say there are more off-road capable pickups and more comfortable ones, and those who say so are probably right. But I believe that the Mitsubishi Strada Athlete is the perfect mix between the two. It is very smooth on the road while being capable off it, ensuring that I can maximize my journey’s worth that when I reach my destination under the stars, I can enjoy my time there without being exhausted.

T

he facelifted and updated 2021 Nissan Patrol was launched back in September 2019 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The Philippine media contingent tested a convoy over sand dunes, aggressively climbed the Jabal Hafeet Mountain in the region of Tawam, and traveled to destination hot spots covering close to 300 kilometers of road. It is mechanically identical to the current 6th generation Y62 model but with a refreshed design inside and outside that does not orphan the current model but is certainly more desirable. Similar to the Infiniti QX80 model we tested a few weeks later in North America, key equipment features to the safety suite and infotainment systems have been thankfully updated along with the new V-motion grille, boomerang-shaped LED headlights and rear light signature, new bumpers on both ends, new alloy wheel designs, and more distinct model variants like the choice of a Patrol more dedicated to off-road use with different bumpers and wheels that increase approach and departure attack angles. Compared directly with its main competition, the Lexus LX570 and the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Patrol has just enough larger capacity, standard kit, and dynamic performance to best its direct rivals. The current 400 bhp / 413 lb-ft of torque Nissan Patrol Royale mated to a 7-speed automatic with active suspension normally retails for P3,988,000.00 but Nissan is now offering as much as P430,000.00 off to move the remaining units to make room for this new model. The award-winning Nissan Patrol is superior to the current Lexus/Toyota Land Cruiser double barrels in almost all fronts. The Patrol is more spacious, significantly nimbler, stops better, is more planted, more comfortable, and has more standard equipment. While stocks last at its most aggressive pricing, buyers can enjoy allweather, all-terrain family hauling in luxury supported with the Hydraulic Body Motion Control system which effectively makes the behemoth handle like a sports sedan, 360° video cameras to help park the land yacht, outstanding 13-speaker Bose® audio system and so much more. The updated model is still a long way from arriving on our shores and will certainly cost more while maintaining the same dimensions and mechanicals. The new Patrol’s aroundview monitor is optimized in a new center console that incorporates dual displays,

an 8-inch upper display and a 7-inch lower touchscreen that feature all-new graphics with a 250 % improvement in resolution. The commander switch that helps easily navigate between infotainment settings has been moved to directly underneath the shifter, making it easier to operate as well. The new infotainment system has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Wi-Fi connectivity, five USB ports including Type C and more. There are apparently 52 LEDs in the new headlights and 44 LEDs in the new taillights. The rear LED turn indicators are sequential now for the first time. Eventually I hope our market gets the optional 12.3-inch color central display and wireless smartphone

charging. There has been an optional smaller engine available in select markets before and continues now with the updated model, a 275 bhp and 290 lb-ft 4.0-liter V6, but I doubt that engine will be available to us nor would we want it. The V8 is superior and now includes an ECO mode for a bit better fuel efficiency. The design updates include more premium interior materials along with more extensive sound and vibration insulation. The new model has wonderful diamond stitch quilted leather seats with added padding and increased comfort while also offering a new GT-R Tan leather color to the selection palette as well as the new handstitched steering wheel. The genuine wood trim has also been enhanced and outfitted more

The third-row seats now slide and recline. In addition to the Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies already available, the new Patrol comes with Intelligent Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection and the Intelligent Forward Collision Warning system. The pedestrian detection system will bring the Patrol to a full stop if a collision is determined to be imminent. It can also sense whether the collision would be caused by another vehicle or a pedestrian. The advanced radar system not only can sense the relative velocity and

New standard Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Backup Collision Intervention, and other Intervention systems along with Blind Spot Warning combined with a new Intelligent RearView Mirror give the driver more tools to make travel and maneuvering safer and more precise. In totality, the facelifted new Nissan Patrol will secure its position in our market as the finest in its class of full-size premium Sport Utility Vehicles. I just hope that the new selling price when Nissan Philippines eventually launches it will be as comparatively aggressive and accommodating as the outgoing model.

I

f you love everything about the updated Lexus IS350 F-Sport but would prefer to sacrifice higher performance for everyday civility at a more attractive price, then look no further than the IS300h hybrid. It is easily the most luxurious and most affordable sedan in its class. The IS300h powerplant and transmission feels a lot like the 6th-generation ES300h (XV60) we first tested in 2015. Unlike with the old front-wheel drive ES however, the IS300h is rear-wheel drive and makes more power more similarly to the 4th-generation GS300h which also shares a similar drivetrain. Yes, the excellent Toyota/Lexus 2.5-liter gasoline hybrid system has been around for almost a decade now across models and in different trim for different markets. This is the first time our market gets this powerplant though after years of dependable duty. So new buyers will have nothing to worry about when it comes to reliability, lower carbon footprint, performance, and consistency. With perfected long-term duty in the bag and armed with its most potent iteration, the IS300h is still plenty quick for real-world use when driven spiritedly. However, I recognize that most buyers of the new IS300h are getting it for the unique balance of luxury and dynamic efficiency. I need to point out that if you are thinking that the onboard battery is big enough to run on pure electricity on extended ranges at speeds over 60 km/h, you will be disappointed. The trunk does lose 30 liters of capacity to accommodate the battery (down from 480 liters in the IS350 F-Sport) but aside from starting quietly to not offend neighbors, you will have just enough energy to travel short of 2 kilometers at speeds below 60 km/h before the ICE engine takes control of propulsion. Brake regeneration and charging from normal internal combustion engine duty instead actively assists thrust intelligently depending on need with the goal of maximum fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. There is no additional Plug-In battery capacity. You must mostly rely on the car’s intelligence to sort out the power distribution and use. The driver inputs do matter and there are some toggle switches that allow the driver to participate but ultimately the results are inconsequential. Just drive it normally with discipline and courtesy, and you will be rewarded with the potential to travel over 1,200 kilometers on a full tank of fuel compared with 780 kilometers of maximum range with the IS350 F-Sport, that’s about a 55% improvement!

As enjoyable as the Lexus IS350 F-Sport is, that improvement of range combined with the additional acquisition cost savings of P480,000.00 for the IS300h are very convincing persuasions. The IS350 F-Sport has the grunt, mixed alloys, and adaptive suspension compared to the IS300h, but they share most of the same critical equipment including the very healthy brake system. The IS300h rides as plush as the IS350 F-Sport with standard suspension and beautiful uniform alloys on all corners. Even the Pioneer 10-speaker audio system and carpeting are the same. The standard system sounds good but it definitely could have been much better with the optional Mark Levinson®. I am still not a

fan of the haptic control touchpad. The 8-inch infotainment system, with standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, is almost six inches closer to the driver than before, which is good, but the rear guided camera for parking is not 360 degrees and the output is not very crisp. The freshly reimagined new 2021 Lexus IS-series is a cornucopia of goodness and familiarity. The best bits were retained or refined with the most obvious change being its exterior design. The standard 3rd generation (XE30) chassis length was retained but the body, suspension, and mounts were upgraded. Compared directly to its most formidable competition in our market, the Lexus comes

Feature

with more equipment and technology for so much less while being more refined and just as rewarding. Dimensionally the new IS-series is 30 mm longer, 30 mm wider, and 5 mm taller than its predecessor. Lexus also packaged the new Bridgestone Potenza S001L tires that are more comfort biased so they too contribute to creating a rewarding driving experience. The new exterior design is awesome, aggressive and distinctive. The new aerodynamic details are functional as well, including the RC-F inspired grille-bottom air intake that channels air to assist in cooling the brakes. There is a subtle sound generator

to help quell undesirable interior sounds and to help create a more favorable cacophony from the modest inline-4 2.5-liter engine. The triple-beam LED headlights and fabulous new singular LED rear signature lights (the three-dimensional form of the rear deck design is created with a stamping technology called press-in mold construction) look fantastic and function excellently and dramatically. The dashboard received styling updates too but it is less obvious. Even if Lexus is the supreme luxury brand of Toyota, ever since the exotic halo LFA supercar launched in 2010, the team of craftsmen,

designers, and engineers have consistently produced genuinely desirable and enjoyable vehicles that justify their acquisition costs. The Lexus IS300h is not the scorcher in the family but it is truly an excellent efficient luxury sedan that adds an additional dimension to the IS350 F-Sport as the benchmark in our market.

ave you ever heard of the pangolin?? Better yet, did you have any idea that endemic to the Philippines, our very home, is a certain species of pangolin? I've known about pangolins as the scaly anteater and was only recently reminded of them as they were pushed into the spotlight as one of the potential carriers of pre-humanstrain COVID-19. But I had absolutely no clue that we had pangolins in the Philippines! We seem to never talk about them — at least not as much as we

do of the tamaraws, the tarsier, or the mighty Philippine eagle. It turns out, yes — we have pangolins in the Philippines! And a very special kind, too. They have only in 1998 been recognized as their own unique species — specifically Manis culionensis, distinct from the Sunda Pangolins, which are scattered around Southeast Asia — and are locally called the 'balintong,' which translates to somersault, because of the way it rolls itself into a scaly ball as a defense mechanism when threatened. The Philippine Pangolin is endemic to the Palawan region, naturally inhabiting four islands which include:

Palawan, Busuanga, Culion, and Calauit (Note: They have also been introduced by humans to the island of Apulit). They are nocturnal animals who primarily feed on ants, termites and other insects. They locate their prey via their strong sense of smell and then use their forefeet to rip insect nests open for them to feed on. Therefore, pangolins are among nature's best pest controllers! If only we had enough of them, farmers in the area would not need to consider using chemical pesticides (which affect our food supply in the end). Now, here's the heartbreaking part. Pangolins are harmless, tender, and gentle creatures, but they've been vehemently hunted to near extinction for their meat, scales, and other body parts which are commonly used as ingredients for Traditional Chinese Medicine. Take note that pangolin scales are really just made up of cemented hairs (they're simply made of keratin!), and that the true medicinal value of pangolin parts still remains unfounded; though the black

market demand for them has remained ever-so-strong, that it continues to fuel worldwide poaching operations — pushing these poor animals (of different pangolin species, across Asia and in Africa) to the brink of their existence. After stronger efforts were made by the international community to bust the illegal wildlife trade rings in Indonesia and Malaysia, the Philippines consequently saw an alarming spike in the poaching activities that specifically targeted the Palawan Pangolin. Filipinos would trap and sell pangolins, often to smugglers from China. The recorded seizures of Philippine pangolins from wildlife traffickers in the country were 740 individual (captive) pangolins from the year 2000 to 2017. Whereas from 2018-2019 alone,

Around 6,894 pangolins were seized from poachers from 2018-2019 alone — a 900% increase from previous years combined

the equivalent of 6,894 pangolins were seized from poachers (that's a 900% increase in just 2 years, compared to the previous 18!). Comprising this figure were 2,008.41 kilos of pangolin scales, which were estimated to have been collected from approximately 6,820 individual pangolins. How could anyone be so selfish and cruel? I admit it was not an easy task for me to write this short piece about the plight of our Philippine pangolins — as seeing the pictures and reading through the painful information describing their mass murder by my own countrymen has often left me quite emotional. I find it hard to believe that until this time — as we are almost at the point of no return — there is still no political will to get more funding for better investigations and to get more people on

board to save the Philippine pangolins. On the brighter side, legislation has already been made to protect our balintongs, and to punish such wildlife poachers (albeit with lenient consequences). And unfortunately, in classic Filipino political fashion (a.k.a. corruption), enforcement has been rather lax — at least not enough to curb the exponential increase of poaching and illegal trade. Stated under the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act (Republic Act No. 9147) of 2001 are the different penalties for committing illegal acts on our protected species — ranging from 2-12 years of imprisonment or Php 5,000 — Php 1,000,000 worth of fines. But as we might have expected, the IUCN, in December 2019 re-assessed

the status of the Philippine pangolin and officially listed it as now being a Critically Endangered species. This is despite the fact that the species has, on paper, been protected from any form of hunting, possession, or trade in the Philippines since 2004. Clearly, our country did not walk the talk. At this point, it may no longer come to you as a surprise that the pangolins of the world are officially identified as the most trafficked wild animal on earth. What a sad, sad fact to know. Therefore, to constantly remind us of their vulnerability and how they need all the help that they could possibly get — every third Saturday of February is celebrated as World Pangolin Day. Due to the reclusive nature of the Philippine pangolins, very little is known about them — what their preferred habitat is (since they've also

been forced into more developed areas due to the progressive destruction of their natural habitats); the scope of their home range; what their mating behaviors are; what their longevity is; and what their actual population figures are. Using a mathematical model though, we can tell — based on the rapidly declining number of random local sightings — that the Philippine pangolin is indeed on a downward spiral to extinction. Thankfully, there are wild hearts out there who have dedicated much of their time and energy towards major conservation efforts for our poor, helpless Philippine pangolins. Among the leaders in relentlessly championing the survival of this animal species is the Katala Foundation — a non-profit, nonstock, non-governmental organization led by its steadfast, Filipino-speaking

German founder, Sabine Schoppe. The Katala Foundation is very active in protecting and conserving threatened endemic wildlife in the country, especially in Palawan. Another tender heart is Ms. Diana Limjoco, who began loving pangolins immediately after she had rescued one — whom she took under her care and named baby 'Balin,' for Balintong. She tells more about her heartwarming story about saving and nursing baby Balin in her blog: https://discover. hubpages.com/animals/a-rescued-babypangolin-or-palawan-scaly-anteater. “These creatures are the gardeners of the forest as well as the controllers of the insects that would otherwise eat all the plants that abound there. Adding that, “They go about their job skillfully in the dark of night, so none might see the magic they do. For this, they are rewarded with extermination, because they will not defend themselves by aggression — they passively curl up into a ball and let their armor protect them. Alas, it does not protect them from us humans!”. Videos of baby Balin can also be found on her YouTube channel: Ottermom. And since you are a reader of our car magazine, I am sure you are also familiar with Mazda Philippines' BT-50 Pangolin pickup! To see how this all goes full-circle, you must know that Mazda Philippines — under the direction of its CEO, Steven Tan, who is an avid nature-lover himself — in its newfound advocacy to help save the Philippine pangolins, has committed to lend out a Mazda BT-50 4x4 Pangolin pickup truck to the Katala Foundation for at least a year, in order to help them as

ART CARS A reflection on modern-day car artisans

y definition, art cars are special vehicles that have been modified/ customized in the quest of enhancing its appearance and as an act of artistic expression. Knowing fully well that art is highly subjective, art cars can also take on many forms. Narrowing it down entails identifying the kind and extent of work that has been done. For starters, it can be an elaborate painting done on the car’s exterior, much like the BMW art cars with renowned artists such as Warhol, Lichtenstein, and more. It may also be attributed to its overall exterior shape as fashioned from coach builders of yore such as Zagato, Figoni et Falaschi, Bertone, Saoutchik, and more that have produced wonderfully crafted automobiles. Or take for example highly crafted builds from leading American car customizers such as Chip Foose, Jim and Mike Ring of The Ringbrothers,

B

Dave Kindig, and more that continue to build amazing rides. Whatever form it may take, it has to evoke an emotional response and communicate a particular idea or design language to whoever lays their eyes on it. But these past few years, new car artisans have made their mark in the car customization scene as they regularly unveil their acclaimed builds at SEMA and other leading shows around the globe. I’m referring to automotivedriven, highly creative souls such as Kei Miura of Pandem/Rocket Bunny, Akira Nakai of RAUH-Welt BEGRIFF (RWB), Wataru Kato of Liberty Walk, Magnus Walker of Urban Outlaw and Rob Dickenson of Singer Vehicle Design. These modern-day car artisans have amassed a huge following that can be attributed to their designs, which are purely charismatic. I say charismatic because even though they seamlessly incorporate signature touches on each build, they see to it that each one has its own character and more importantly,

“Each build incorporates a signature look that when you see one, you’ll immediately know who’s responsible for it.”

56

slightly different from one another. Each build incorporates a signature look that when you see one, you’ll immediately know who’s responsible for it. Just like the trademark brush strokes of great artists, which depict their own individual styles. From the flowing over fenders of RWB Porsches to the aggressively sculpted wide flares by Liberty Walk, the finely shaped door handles of Urban Outlaw Porsches to the neatly tapered exterior body lines of the Singer Porsches, these individuals represent the new wave of artisan car builds that are gaining ground on a global scale. If you ask me, this is actually good for the entire automotive hobby as it presents another avenue as to how we can simply have fun with our cars. Heck, who knows, it might even actually appreciate in terms of value someday. Just like the artful custom cars done by past car customizers such as the late George Barris, Boyd Coddington, and more that have become highly prized collector cars. My only hope is that such cars don’t end up as ‘garage queens’ or prized sculptures that won’t be driven enthusiastically and with gusto. If you think about it, the automobile can really be looked upon as a sculpture in motion. Meaning there’s really no harm in re-sculpting it for the sake of making it look better. Provided though it be done and used properly. Remember to say NO to stock and keep it tuned!

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD AN OIL CHANGE? The engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It keeps the many components of the engine working efficiently, and it helps reduce the accumulation of varnish and carbon from collecting on the engine. As oil collects heat, varnish and carbons during the course of protecting and keeping the engine running smoothly, it eventually becomes a sludge, no matter how good the oil is. That’s when you should have your oil changed.

hat was once unveiled as Toyota’s FT-1 Concept car several years ago has evolved into the currentgeneration Toyota GR Supra. Returning 21 years after its last appearance, the good news is that the GR Supra still embodies all of its inherent traits that enthusiasts revere, from the turbocharged, straight six-cylinder engine, all the way to a rear wheel drive layout. Going head to head with stiff competition from similar performance coupes, the GR Supra continues where it left off by enticing a new generation of enthusiasts. With Toyota opting to partner with BMW, it’s no secret that the GR Supra shares its platform, running gear, engine, gearbox and most of the interior with the latest BMW Z4. Simply put, this revived version of a Japanese automotive legend might

have BMW bones, but it has its own personality and is just damn good. Being a performance-oriented coupe just like its predecessors only means that GR Supra enthusiasts are looking at it like a blank canvass and can’t wait to start modding it by any means possible. Something the aftermarket companies know too well as they swiftly developed their parts on just about every component that could be modded. These range from aftermarket wheels, suspension, engine performance, and body kits. Speaking of body kits, there are currently ten different body kit manufacturers that offer a widebody kit for the GR Supra. One of them happens to be the Pandem/Rocket Bunny widebody kit that our featured GR Supra has which was sourced from Dolf Santiago of Emperor Motorsports. Highly regarded for making overfenders and ducktail spoilers as requisite body mods, Kei

PANDEM STYLE The Pandem widebody kit is more than just wide fenders as it also incorporates various design elements, making the GR Supra look even more awesome.

Miura’s designs have been wellreceived internationally as it has graced many show cars from the world over. In stock form, the GR Supra already embodies the iconic coupe silhouette with a long hood, short rear overhang, and a fastback roofline. But adding a widebody kit takes the visual aspect of the GR Supra to another level. Bigger and wider front and rear fenders, a lower front lip, side skirts, and the massive rear wing make up the Pandem/Rocket Bunny wide body kit. Tasked to do the whole install and color matching of the widebody kit is Jworks Unlimited shop of John Lee. Similar to most widebody kits, the installation requires trimming a portion of the pristine wheel arches and quarter panels in this case. This irreversible step is necessary to make more room for fitting bigger and wider wheels/ tires and to allow the tires to sink deep inside the wheel wells once the aftermarket air suspension is dropped for that insanely wild slammed-to-theground look. Making all that possible with a simple touch of the remote is an Air Force air suspension kit. Specially developed for the GR Supra, this means it is a direct bolt-on kit with no modifying required. Jworks Unlimited did the install, including calibrating the entire system. Like most air suspension kits, it allows the user to adjust the desired maximum and minimum ride height to match the body kit. As for ride quality, it comes with adjustable damping settings to dial-in the desired ride comfort while increasing the vehicle’s stability. Substantially filling the widebody fenders and neatly tucked beneath the wheel arches are the meshtype, Work M1-3P Meister wheels. The staggered, 19-inch wheel set-up was chosen with a custom matte wheel center finish with high-gloss black barrels. To get the maximum amount of traction, the wheels are then wrapped with competition-spec, Toyo R888R tires. One notch higher than the R888, this model has a new tread design and improved contact patch. Opening the front bonnet will reveal the 3.0-liter, twin-scroll, singe turbo, DOHC, 24-valve, straight six-cylinder engine with an 8-speed

automatic transmission. Delivering an impressive maximum output of 335 horsepower and a maximum torque of 365 lb-ft, I’d say it can pretty much hold its own should the need arise. As far as aftermarket engine goodies are concerned, Emperor Motorsports sourced a Blitz intake and a complete HKS exhaust system. Tried and tested basic mods that should help generate a few more ponies. Because having more power is simply much better. It’s the first widebody GR Supra on our shores, and it turned out pretty well as one would expect. Those fantastically wide fenders, the aggressive-looking side skirts and the huge rear wing with a huge suspension drop on deep dish wheels negate any form of subtlety on this build as this is one attention-grabbing projectile. Let’s just say that being subtle is not one of the strong character traits of this particular widebody GR Supra.

ithout question, Lamborghinis are visually striking vehicles that strongly evoke emotion and define extreme performance in every aspect. Having said that, some enthusiasts may argue that it needs nothing else, while others see an opportunity to improve upon it. In this day and age, all major supercar manufacturers are building powerful and well-designed cars. But the fact remains that there’s still a huge demand to offer such cars with aftermarket bits and pieces to make them standout and perform even more. And there’s no stopping performance enthusiasts like Keith Bryan Haw of Importhookup from transforming his Lamborghini Huracan into something substantially much more.

66

MARCH-APRIL 2021 • C-MAGAZINE.COM

With way too many car-show winning builds, style is something Keith is in tune with. Since this is his personal build, it greatly incorporates design cues that reflect how he wants the vehicle to look. A trait that also includes the wheels as he personally designed it together with the wheel manufacturer and of course, his signature white exterior color. “My build plan was to make the baddest and wildest Lamborghini Huracan in the Philippines, showcase it in the Manila Auto Salon, and ultimately win Best of Show. But it never happened due to the pandemic. Since I already had most of the parts, it underwent several stages with different wheel and exhaust setups, simply because I wanted to enjoy the car before installing the widebody kit.” For starters, it’s not just some off-the-shelf wide body kit either, for it’s a limited-edition N-Largo kit

SEAMLESS The super exclusive (1 of 25) Novitec N-Largo bodykit blends in perfectly with the original bodylines of the Huracan that it looks as if it originally came that way.

from noted body kit manufacturer Novitec. Only 25 kits have been produced that include the wider front and rear fenders, side skirts, and rear diffuser. The hood is a piece from Vorsteiner while a Capristo glass and carbon bonnet can be found at the rear. Finally, various carbon pieces from 1016 Industries altogether make up the exterior mods. With that amount of kit, this is more like having a complete body conversion. The installation of the wide body kit requires gutting a portion of the wheel arches. An unthinkable feat that purists would surely cringe at while Keith himself did the deed using a cut off wheel. Once that was done, Alex Isip of Alex Car Restoration installed and aligned all the panels, including color matching everything in Lamborghini’s Bianco Monocerous color using Cromax paints. At first glance, the entire widebody kit looks so seamless it can easily be mistaken as factory stock. But what struck me most was how wide the rear fenders really turned out. There’s a lot of girth there, and the way they wrap around and fuse onto the rear bumper has an elegant yet aggressive look all its own as Keith explains, “The main styling cue here is to make this a clean widebody without looking like it’s a widebody. It’s called OEM+widebody. A person won’t know it’s a widebody until it’s seen side by side with another. It cleanly emphasizes the lines of the edgy Lamborghini design without altering its form.” Manufactured in the States by Brixton Forged Wheels, Keith had an active part in the wheel design process which took 4 months as he explains, “Its a throwback to the circular wheel design of the old-school Lamborghini, but with a twist to compliment the lines of the modern Lamborghini.” Aptly named KB01, the wheel spokes are finely sculpted and incorporates a lot of details. The 3-piece wheel construction allows for the wheel centers and barrels to have different finishes to achieve that custom one-off look. Up front are 20-inch diameter wheels while the rears are 21-inchers and wrapped with Michelin PS4 tires. Perfectly tucking in the huge rollers against the widebody kit are Novitec Lowering Sport springs

that allow height adjustability with the advantage of keeping its overall ride and comfort intact. If whirling a naturally aspirated V10 Lamborghini engine near redline is absolute food for the soul, just imagine what if it had a supercharger? Well, wonder no more as this one has a supercharger kit from VF Engineering that bumps up the power by as much as 200-plus hp. Opening the see-through Capristo carbon and glass bonnet lies the custom bronze finished VF800 supercharger along with a carbon fiber intake vent from 1016 Industries. To unlock the additional power output, a VF Engineering ECU tune comes with the kit. This is basically a realtime reflash that’s been specially

calibrated to provide neck-snapping throttle response with a total power output of 800 whp. A modded supercar just wouldn’t be complete without an aftermarket exhaust and only the best would suffice for Keith’s Huracan. Made of 100% titanium, RYFT exhausts are artisan-crafted, which is evident in how each tube is crafted and meticulously TIG welded that’s also called “Lobster Tail”. It’s also significantly lighter, but the best part is the additional 20-plus horsepower it offers. Not to mention the quad tips with the burnt titanium effect that looks downright amazing. They are the genuine article after all. Based on what’s evident on the tuning scene worldwide, Lamborghini

Huracáns are one of the most modified Italian supercars right now. With a lot of high-end aftermarket exterior and performance parts to choose from, enthusiasts are doing more than just rudimentary wheel and exhaust swaps. They are churning out properly-built cars with modded engines producing insane power levels and a host of exterior styling pieces that make it look even faster. Something that’s exactly like Keith’s custom-built Huracan. While its aggressive widebody looks and custom wheels are certainly what attract the most attention, the howl from the supercharged engine will surely captivate Keith’s attention every time he slips behind the wheel and gets on the throttle.

he Philippines is generally blessed with good weather conditions all year round. Well, except for some months of the year when we get a good amount of rainfall. But generally, March is the month of the year when we almost always get sunny weather, ideal for those long rides to the beach or to our favorite countryside destinations. This year will be extra special because we were deprived of our freedom to ride last year when the whole country was put on lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the threat of the coronavirus still out there our desire to ride to faraway places where the air is fresh and people are few, only grew stronger. But before you pack that Givi box, make sure to check some important parts of your bike to ensure a worry free journey. Let’s start with your bike’s:

T

BATTERY — The battery is probably one of the most overlooked components of our motorcycles. Since the advent of “maintenance free” batteries in the market, checking one’s battery fluid levels has become a thing of the past. With maintenance free batteries we often forget that our bikes even have one. That is until it mysteriously dies on you at the most inappropriate time, leaving you stranded. You’re lucky if your bike is equipped with a kick-starter, you can probably limp ride your bike to the nearest battery shop. But most big bikes don’t even have the luxury of a kick-starter. Even if you managed to bump start your bike it will only run a few kilometers until it dies completely when the battery is totally drained. Modern motorcycles are power hogs and their ECU requires a constant stream of electric current

70

to run normally. The average lifespan of a motorcycle battery is two years. Three if well looked after. Lead acid battery’s longevity relies on being constantly charged (not over charged) so it’s important to have your bike’s charging system checked at least once a year to keep your battery in tip top shape. BRAKES —It’s easy to check the thickness of your bike’s brake pads but make it a habit to regularly check your bike’s brake fluid level. There’s a small window on your bike’s brake fluid reservoir so you can check its level. But take note that as your brake pads wear off the caliper’s pistons automatically adjust to their remaining thickness and the reservoir will naturally show a low fluid level. For drum brakes there’s usually an adjustment nut on the opposite end of the brake cable connected to the brake lever. No more adjustment thread means worn out pads. Also feel for unusual pulsation on the brake levers when you apply pressure as this means a warped rotor or disc. Sponginess on the other hand means there are trapped air bubbles on your brake lines that should be bled out. These air bubbles sometimes expand from extreme heat that in worst cases can seize your brakes solid. Also check the color of your brake fluid periodically. A healthy brake fluid should have a light golden color. A dark color means it's burnt and should be bled out completely and replaced with fresh brake fluid. DRIVE CHAIN — Consider yourself lucky if your bike has a shaft or belt final drive which are relatively low maintenance compared to the more common roller chain. But with proper care and maintenance a drive chain can last a long time. The trick to a chain’s longevity is proper lubrication. The simplest

roller chains are those that don't have rubber “O” rings inserted between the chain’s side plates. This type of roller chain wears out much faster than those with rubber O-rings that better seal in the lubricants and keep sand and dirt out of wear prone surfaces. To increase the service life of your rollerchain make sure to keep them clean and well lubricated with a motorcycle-specific chain lubricant or chain wax. You can easily tell if your chain is worn out by checking the adjustment thread on your bike’s rear wheel axle or if you hear uneven grinding noises coming from the drive chain. Chain life expectancy can vary depending on your riding style and type of motorcycle but it’s not uncommon for a motorcycle chain to last for more than 12,000 kilometers with proper care. It’s also wise to replace your countersprocket (small) and wheel sprocket (big) when you replace your chain. TIRES — Your tires are the only thing that connects you to the road. Unlike cars that have four wide contact patches, motorcycles only have two tiny contact patches. Motorcycle tires also have a round cross section to facilitate the leaning necessary to turn a motorcycle through a corner. Motorcycle tires normally wear off at the center. But there are dual compound tires that use a harder compound rubber on the center for longer tread wear and softer rubber compound on the outer edges for superior cornering grip. All motorcycle tires have tread wear indicator strips built into the tire’s grooves so it’s easier to tell when they need replacement. It’s also important to check your tire pressure every so often because nothing wears out a tire faster than an underinflated tire. With all that said, have a safe summer trip everyone!

DUCATI PHILIPPINES LAUNCHES THE ALL-NEW MULTISTRADA V4 Words by Maynard M. Marcelo Photos by Randy Silva-Netto DUCATI PHILIPPINES recently launched one of the most highly anticipated motorcycles to hit Philippine shores: the all-new Multistrada V4. Ducati Philippines marked the unveiling and launch of this all-new benchmark product to its passionate customers by conducting an unboxing event, where key customers and brand ambassadors were provided detailed information about the Multistrada V4 product range which comprises various trim and accessory pack levels.

MARCH-APRIL 2021 • C-MAGAZINE.COM

The fourth generation of Multistrada is a product that although comes with an even higher level of performance and technology, is easier to ride than ever before. More robust and at the same time lighter. More versatile and comfortable, but effective in all riding conditions. Departing from the L-twin tradition, the new Multistrada V4 is now powered by the new V4 Granturismo motor. This powerhouse motor is compact and lightweight at just 66.7 kg but packs a big punch,

delivering 170 hp at 10,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 92.18 lb-ft at 8,750 rpm. Another benefit with the V4 Granturismo, oil change is scheduled every 15,000 km, while valve clearance check and eventual adjustment is required every 60,000 km. No bike in production goes that far. The Multistrada V4 is equipped with an aluminum monocoque frame, 19-inch front wheel and double-sided swingarm, capable of accommodating spoked wheels. It has a limited wheelbase of 1,567 mm, a sporty front end geometry, suspension with large travel (170 mm front wheel and 180 mm rear wheel), ground clearance of 220 mm and a dry weight of 215 kg. All this allows the Multistrada V4 to be intuitive and effective around the corners like a real Ducati and at the same time easy to ride and versatile for both on-road and off-road use. With the Multistrada V4, Ducati also introduces an absolute first in the world of motorcycles: the revolutionary front and rear radar system, which allows the use of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD). Radars are advanced auxiliary systems that Ducati has developed together with a top-level technological partner such as Bosch and are able to support and make riding more comfortable thanks to the ability to reconstruct the reality surrounding the bike. The all-new Ducati Multistrada V4 is now available at all Ducati dealerships nationwide, but act fast because the bikes are being snapped up by eager buyers even before they hit the showroom floors. The Multistrada V4 retails for PhP 1,490,000, the Multistrada V4 S with Radar and Spoke Wheels at PhP 1,745,000 (red) and PhP 1,760,000 (gray), and PhP 2,180,000 for the top-of-the-line Sport Performance model.

THE BIRTH OF A CLASSIC

BMW R18 FIRST EDITION WORDS

PHOTOS

MAYNARD M. MARCELO

RANDY SILVA-NETTO

A

s the motorcycle section editor of C! Magazine I get the privilege of testing most, if not all, of the newest motorcycles to land on Philippine shores. After almost 15 years in the industry writing motorcycle reviews, only a few bikes ever made a lasting impression upon me, and one such bike was the new BMW R18 First Edition. I first saw the R18 at the BMW booth during the 2019 EICMA Motorcycle Show held in Milan, Italy and even if I am not much of a cruiser fan I couldn't help but admire the clean and elegant lines of the R18 Concept. It’s so simple yet so mesmerizing. Last December at the exclusive media preview organized by SMC Asia Car Distributors Corp., the Philippine distributor of BMW Motorrad, I was astonished to see that the production R18 surprisingly remained faithful to the R18 Concept design.

BMW designed the R18 for customization and they developed a catalogue full of accessories specifically for it. Want to turn your R18 into a Bobber? They have it. Fancy the chopper look? They have it as well. In fact, you can turn your R18 into anything you want because we were told that most aftermarket cruiser accessories made for other brands, such as handlebar risers, foot controls, and even gas caps, can be bolted right on the R18 with no modifications required. Is it just us or can you also see a hint of Harley-Davidson Softail Slim in the R18’s design? If that’s the case, we think BMW couldn’t have chosen a better inspiration (or could it be their target?) for the R18. Like the 1936 BMW R5 where the designers drew their inspiration from, the R18 chassis is composed of a double-cradle design with a central backbone that flows straight from the headstock down to the rear axle. While the R5 has a rigid chassis, the R18

sports a cleverly disguised hardtail look swingarm. The preload only adjustable ZF Sachs rear shock absorber offers 89 mm (3.5 inches) of travel is mounted horizontally underneath the seat and directly connects the top of the swingarm to the main chassis. Up front the beautifully shrouded 49 mm Showa fork offers a more generous 199 mm (4.7 inches) of suspension travel. Despite having spoke rims for that classic look, the R 18 rolls on tubeless Michelin 120/70 R19 tires in front and 180/60 R16 in the rear. Braking duties are handled by twin 300mm brake discs clamped with 4-piston calipers in front and a single disc of the same size in the rear with a 2-piston caliper. Seat height is a very low 690 mm. The R 18 tips the scales at 345 kg.

The main talking point about the R 18, perhaps on top of its captivating styling, is none other than the Euro 5 compliant 1802cc boxer-twin motor, the largest displacement boxer-twin BMW ever produced. The air/oil-cooled 1802cc boxer-twin motor features old-school pushrods and a 4 valves per cylinder head that produces 91 hp at 4750 rpm and a maximum torque of 116.52 lb-ft at 3000 rpm. From the 6-speed gearbox, power is transferred to the rear wheel via an exposed shaft drive, a feature also derived from the R5. While the rest of the world gets two versions (Basic and First Edition) of the R18, we only get the premium First Edition variant with added premium features and lots of chrome accents and the elaborate double white pinstriping

GERMAN CRUISER While the R18 is 100% Berlin Built, its overall execution is very American. The only thing that differentiates it from other American style cruisers is the 1802cc boxertwin motor, the largest displacement boxer-twin BMW ever produced.

paintwork. Premium features added to the R18 First Edition are the Keyless Start, Hill Start Control, and Reverse Assist. Standard on all R18 are ride-bywire, ABS, Automatic Stability Control, Engine Drag Torque Control, and 3 Riding Modes (Rock, Roll, and Rain). R18 First Edition buyers will also get an exclusive owner’s kit that contains a BMW heritage book, an R18 cap, R18 belt and buckle, and three classic copper-lettered BMW emblems with screws and a screwdriver. With the key fob stored inside your pocket, thumb the starter button and the big boxer twin motor comes to life with a rather forceful rock to the left before settling to a lumpy but steady idle. Riders unfamiliar with this inherent boxer-twin characteristic will be surely intimidated, if not terrified. But that will be replaced by sheer joy once you start moving forward. It doesn’t take much to get the R18 moving. With an abundance of low down torque, just a little bit of throttle is needed for forward progress. Pull the light clutch then shift to first gear with a satisfying clunk. This may sound very uncharacteristic for a BMW but this mechanical sound every time you shift gears is actually engineered into the gearbox because, we were told, that’s how cruiser riders like it. That big bold 1800cc emblems on the motor may elicit panic to riders not used to big displacement numbers but don’t fear, this big boxer twin prefers short shifting below 2000 rpm than exploring the threshold of its 5500 rpm limit. With 90 percent of its torque concentrated between 1750 rpm and 3000 rpm there’s really no reason to go beyond 3500 rpm where the 1802 cc boxer twin produces its peak power. Beyond 3500 rpm power tapers off gradually and vibration starts to build up. There’s a narrow corridor between 3500 rpm, and 4500 rpm where vibrations are at its most intense, then disappears until 5500 rpm. The key with the R18 is converting that massive 116.52 lb-ft of torque to speed. Around town I rarely go beyond 4th gear. Most of the time I only use 2nd and 3rd gear. 5th and 6th gears are best reserved for long stretches of highways and wide open provincial roads. BMW claims a

top speed of no less than 180 Km/h. While most cruisers only get traction control to tame their massive torque figures, BMW decided to equip the R18 with three preprogrammed riding modes, namely Rock, Roll, and Rain. These riding modes not only work in unison with the BMW ASC, or Automatic Stability Control, but also changes how the throttle responds to inputs. In Rock mode throttle response is sharper and power is more immediate in the lower parts of the rev

range. You can even induce the rear wheel to break traction during hard acceleration from a standstill if you must. In Roll mode the power delivery is softer and throttle response is less aggressive. In Rain mode throttle response is very soft and power delivery very conservative which is ideal for wet riding conditions. The R18 is also equipped with MSR, or an Engine Drag Control, an ECU controlled slip assist system that modulates the throttle body butterfly valves to prevent the

rear wheel from locking up under heavy engine braking or after downshifts. At 345 kilograms the R18 is certainly no featherweight, and you will be reminded of this every time you pick it up from its side stand, or when backing out of a parking spot. Good thing the seat height is very low at 690 mm (27.2 inches) even short riders can find solid footing. The R18 First Edition is also equipped with a useful reverse-assist system that uses the electric motor as a reverse gear. Just flip down a switch

located just above the left footboard while on neutral with the engine running and press the starter button to reverse. It’s very easy to use. The reach to the handlebar is long but offers a relaxing upright riding position that’s well suited for leisurely rides. While other big cruisers offer a variety of riding positions, the R18 is somewhat stuck with mid-mounted foot pegs because of the limitations presented by the protruding cylinder heads. But I think this setup is ideal for short legged riders who have some difficulty operating those hard-to-reach forward foot controls because of height limitations. The foot peg positioning also helps alleviate some weight from your butt after riding for a while because the seat, while very supportive, is a bit on the firm side for continuous riding. Pillion accommodation is an added cost option. For such a long and heavy cruiser the R18 is surprisingly easy to maneuver. The wide handlebars offer plenty of leverage for maneuvering in traffic plus it also gives you a clear indication just how far out the paint bucket size cylinder heads protrude on both sides. Turn in is light and cornering stability is superb but lean angles must always be kept in check when cornering because of the limited ground clearance of the foot boards. Turn aggressively and see expensive sparks fly from underneath to remind you that you’re riding a cruiser, and not a sport naked. The R18 brakes, while powerful and easy to modulate, need some getting used to because it requires a firm squeeze on the front brake lever for rapid deceleration from triple digit speeds. This might be due to new brake pads because our test bike only has a few hundred kilometers on its odometer and should improve in time. The R18 uses an integral ABS function where the front brake lever operates all three brake calipers applying brake pressure to the front and rear wheels.

The foot brake lever only operates the rear brake, though. The clutch and brake levers are span adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of hand sizes. Switches and controls are intuitive to use and have a high quality tactile feel to their operation. PhP 1,955,000 ($40,265.18 at current exchange rate) may seem dear for a motorcycle. But then again the R18 is not just a motorcycle. The R18 is a statement of good taste. The R18 is an engineering masterpiece and artwork rolled into one. The

PURE AND SIMPLE The beauty of the R18 is in its simplicity. BMW did a remarkable job of creating a modern rendition of the classic R5.

R18 is an elegant gesture to BMW's past while acknowledging current motorcycle trends. But most of all, the R18 represents your personal riding enjoyment. You don’t ride an R18 to commute to your office or to travel long distances (but technically you can), there are other motorcycles that are more functional, more comfortable, and less expensive for those purposes. You ride an R18 to enjoy yourself and the good life that you’ve worked so hard to achieve, or simply to celebrate your grand lottery win.

T KYMCO BIKE REVIEW

XCITING S 400i WORDS

MAYNARD M. MARCELO PHOTOS

RANDY SILVA-NETTO

his review was a long time coming. We were supposed to test the Kymco Xciting S 400i last year but as fate would have it, everything came to a complete stop because of the CoVid-19 pandemic and the ensuing quarantines and lockdown that followed, we had to postpone our review until January of this year. While we’re still living with the dreaded and deadly virus, things are slowly returning to normal, or rather to the “new normal,” with reference to socialdistancing and wearing of face masks and face shields. Thankfully, we were able to get a hold of an Xciting S 400i test unit courtesy of our good friends at Kymco Philippines for a week of, pardon the pun, Xciting rides where the air is fresh and people are few. Looking at the new Xciting S 400i it’s easy to see why it is selling very well. Its styling is sporty and elegant at the same time, with sharp creases and aggressive

lines that’s, pardon the pun again, Xciting to look at from every angle. In other words, it’s a very handsome looking maxi scooter with plenty of functional features, such as the adjustable windscreen, LED taillight and headlight clusters, LED daytime running lights, and turn indicators. All of these elements blend well with the overall design that, I must say, should age pretty well for many years to come. Its size is also spot on for a maxiscooter of its displacement; not too big and not too small. It’s just the right size for a wide variety of riders. Perhaps the most important selling point of the Xciting S 400i, at least for Luzon based riders, is its expressway legal engine displacement. Having a 400cc motorbike or scooter allows you complete access to all major expressways north and south of Metro Manila. Therefore the Xciting S 400i is ideal for those who want a twowheel alternative for their cars. At least for those who prioritize comfort and convenience over speed because

there are plenty of other expressway legal motorcycles that cost less than the Xciting S 400i asking price of PhP 359,000. But if you want a 400cc maxiscooter, the Xciting S 400i is the most affordable of the bunch. The Xciting S 400i is the quintessential car alternative for a number of reasons. First, it’s twistand-go convenience is similar to an automatic transmission equipped car and requires very little thought. Second, its height-adjustable windscreen swallows you in a turbulence-free cocoon that offers some degree of rain protection at speed. Third, its Noodoe feature allows you to pair your mobile phone via Bluetooth to let you enjoy music, use navigation, receive and make phone calls, and receive other notifications on the large LCD display. Fourth, there are plenty of compartments for your personal stuff. One of which even has a 12v power outlet for charging your mobile devices. Fifth, you have the protection of an anti-lock braking system, or ABS. Sixth, its LED headlights cast a bright light at night while its LED daytime running lights increase your visibility to oncoming traffic. Seventh, it has a generous passenger accommodation for when the need arises. Eight, because it is expressway legal you’ll be using your car less for those out of town trips thus saving you money on maintenance and fuel costs while having fun at the same time. Nine, it probably looks better than your car anyway. The liquid-cooled, fuel injected, single cylinder, sohc, 4 valve motor produces 35.54 hp at 7500 rpm and 28.10 lb-ft of torque at 6250 rpm that’s pretty quick for city as well as highway riding, pushing the 195 kg scooter up to speed easily. And for a single cylinder motor, it’s also quite smooth. Tiny vibrations only present themselves at higher rpm. Another good thing we noticed about the Xciting S 400i is you really don’t feel like you’re riding a maxi-scooter. Unlike other maxiscooters where you really feel the weight and the size, riding the Xciting S 400i feels like you’re riding a much smaller scooter. While the seat height is a bit tall at 805mm, the front cowling

is low and you have a very clear view of the road in front of you, giving you the impression that the Xciting is smaller than it truly is. Its sporty front end geometry combined with its short 1,570 mm wheelbase and 120/70-15 front and 140/70-14 rear tires gives it the agility of a much smaller scooter as well. Unlike other maxi-scooters, the Kymco Xciting S 400i uses an upper and lower triple clamps just like on a motorcycle, giving it superior stability under hard braking and when cornering. The front forks are very compliant to a variety of road conditions but we find the rear suspension a bit stiff for comfort. Adjusting the rear spring preload to their lowest settings might help improve the ride, or better yet replace them with fully adjustable aftermarket shocks. Braking duties are handled by triple disc brakes with the front having radial mounted calipers biting on dual 280 mm diameter discs. The brakes are progressive with a soft initial bite. Dual-channel ABS is standard on the Xciting S 400i. If you’re in the market for a very capable, fairly comfortable, very handsome looking, well made, and expressway legal long-distance commuter maxi-scooter that you can also tour on with your riding buddies on weekends, you’d be hard pressed to look for something similar at the same price range. Kymco has a couple of newer sub 400cc maxi-scooters, namely the XTown CT 300i Noodoe, XTown 300i, and DownTown 350i TCS, that cost less than the Xciting S 400i if you don’t need the 400cc capacity for the expressways. But if a 400cc is what you need, then the Xciting S 400i should be on top of your shopping list. Specifications: Kymco Xciting S 400i — Engine: EFI, liquid-cooled, single cylinder, sohc, 4 valves, 4 stroke | Displacement: 400cc | Max Power: 35.54 hp @ 7500 rpm | Max Torque: 28.10 lb-ft @ 6250 rpm | Transmission: CVT Seat Height: 810 mm | Fuel Capacity: 12.5 Liters | Tire, front: 120/70-15 | Tire, rear: 150/70-14 | Brakes, front/rear: 2 Disc/Disc, 2-Channel ABS | Curb Weight: 195 kg Top Speed: 160 Km/h | Price: PhP 359,000 .00 | Plus: Handsome styling, standard equipment, agile handling, and good pricing. | Minus: Stiff rear suspension |

Our Picks Let’s face it: no matter how much we grow up, there is a kid in our hearts that still loves to get toys. Throughout the past few years, we are lucky that LEGO, in partnership with different car manufacturers, have been rolling out licensed LEGO sets that mimic vehicles that we wish we could have in our garage. At least for now, we can have these dream car in our shelves. So we took a look at all the available LEGO cars sets and ranked them on which we liked best based on the accuracy and likeness of their real-life counterparts to the scale they are built on. Words by Nicolas A. Calanoc

05 LEGO Technic Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 #42093 Not only is the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 an “affordable” supercar on the streets, this LEGO set does it justice without breaking the bank or hurting the wallet! Not only does it boast the shape of the actual car, it also has a working V8 engine when you roll the car. And for those who want to get extra creative, you can turn this whole set into a hot rod if that suits your fancy.

At this point, there are a lot of LEGO Porsches in many different iterations, so we selected the most affordable one! But even on its own, the way LEGO executed the 1974 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.0 was masterfully done, capturing the iconic shape and scale. Just like how the actual car’s less is more approach made it such a beast on the track, this LEGO 1974 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.0 does just that.

03 LEGO Speed Champions Ferrari F8 Tributo #76895 When you have blocks and lines put together to mimic a curvaceous vehicle, I think that the LEGO master builder who came up with the Ferrari F8 Tributo deserves an award. This not only was LEGO Speed Champion’s first car to increase in scale and thus giving more detail to these small sets, but we believe when it comes to the Speed Champion series, this is the most accurate depiction of any car yet. And come on, to have a Ferrari F8 Tributo on your desk is awesome already.

02 LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender #42110 The LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender is truly a marvel of the capabilities of the Technic line. Without geeking out too much on this set, what makes it an amazing set to own is because the suspension system and 4x4 drivetrain is a mechanical imitation of the actual car. So not only will it look good on your shelf, but you will definitely appreciate what makes the Land Rover Defender such a fantastic off-roader.

01 LEGO Creator Ford Mustang #10265 Among all the LEGO sets available, it is clear that the LEGO Creator Ford Mustang not only depicts the actual Mustang so well, but it also highlights what it means to be LEGO with the amount of detail put into this set while having so many configurations to make the LEGO Creator Ford Mustang truly your own. And it is thanks to the success of this set that has spawned many more that we kids at heart can enjoy today.
