ith cars like the Suzuki S-Presso and the upcoming all-new Toyota Raize, I’ve been fascinated with the Kei car trend that has been happening and benefiting Japan for the longest time. There is just something about minimalism that we can all learn from. Of course, there will be the need for pickups, SUVs, and sports cars. But for most regular daily driving, all we really need is to get from point A to point B safely. There are so many perfect examples to choose from. The biggest mention that was would be the Suzuki Alto, and it was actually here in the Philippines. I remember it being below PhP 500,000 brand-new and I still see it being used today. And when you ask owners of the Alto, they swear by its efficiency, practicality, and can-do attitude. I would love to see manufacturers try to hit the PhP 500,000 price bracket for brand-new cars. It will encourage car buyers to buy 2 cars, one for the sake of going around and one for their specialized wants or needs. One can have a Kei car to go around the city, and their SUV for when they need to haul things. Or a sports car instead of the SUV for those who want to drive on the twisting roads on the weekend. With how technology is nowadays, kei cars aren’t stuffed into the 4-seater box anymore. We have kei car sports cars like the Honda S660 or a kei van like the Toyota Pixis Mega. If we introduced kei cars here in the Philippines and incentivized them, I believe it will benefit the car buyers the most, allowing them practical options.

But for now, I am happy with cars like the Suzuki S-Presso and the all-new Toyota Raize, because it will allow people to see and experience for themselves that the small SUV experience can be had and enjoyed. I remember back in the day when the Toyota Wigo and Mitsubishi Mirage were newly launched and left people curious wondering if these tiny cars could make a difference in our lives without the feeling of lacking. Now, they are staples to the everyday driver proving that they make a difference, which is one step closer to seeing kei cars here in the Philippines.

Know when to stop. Drink responsibly. Sure having a few drinks can be fun, and it’s easy to get carried away. But remember that when you drink, you’re compromising your cognitive ability and responsiveness, which increases your risk for an accident. Don’t drink and drive. It’s simply not worth the risk to yourself and others.

Keep calm on the road There are times when, due to uncontrollable circumstances, our minds tend to stray from the proper mindset when driving. What we must always remember is that driving is more than just a skill — it is a state of mind. Depending on our disposition when we get behind the wheel, we can be calm as cucumbers, or as savage as a raging pitbull. The latter, of course, is never ideal.

Will You Stay or Will You Go
2022’s
Holy Week will be an interesting one, as we’re currently at the point where regulations and protocols against COVID are lightening up and road traffic is generally increasing, while at the same time, many people are still wary on leaving their homes or going to other places. Traditionally, Holy Week is a time when people pack their bags to drive out of town to a nearby resort, or head to their province to be with family, and I’m sure many will continue the tradition this year, despite the risks. With that being the case, some cars and vehicles might have been kept in storage for awhile, or are simply unprepared for a long drive. Here are some helpful tips to make sure that your car is in tip-top shape for that out-of-town excursion.
THE BASICS
My personal driving nightmare is for my car to suddenly break down in the middle of nowhere, so checking up on certain things under the hood goes a long way in avoiding this. Start with making sure your fluids (engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, water and coolant) are at their proper levels. Once everything checks out, ensure that your belts, hoses, and car battery are in good condition. If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, your local service center can check your car for you, usually for free. It will take an extra 30 minutes of your time, but it certainly beats waiting 2 hours for a tow truck to arrive, or worse, leaving your car and finding help on foot if something goes wrong miles away from civilization.
CHECK YOUR RUBBER
Your tires are the only point of contact keeping your car (and your family) from the
20
MARCH 2022 • C-MAGAZINE.COM
road. While usually overlooked, paying special attention to all five tires (yes, including the spare) can save you from road trip headaches. The first thing to do is check if your tires still have a lot of tread. All tires have a tread wear indicator which helps you determine if your tire needs to be replaced. Look for a small triangle symbol on the sidewall of your tire and follow it across the tire to locate a raised bump in between your tire’s treads. If
the bump’s height matches that of your tire’s tread, then your tire needs to be changed. Once that’s sorted out, make sure your tire pressure matches the recommended tire pressure of your car’s manufacturer. The heat generated from underinflated tires can wear your tires out much faster, and in severe cases, may cause a blowout. Low tire pressure also means more rolling resistance, which leads to increased fuel consumption.
CHECK YOUR BRAKES
“Here are some helpful tips to make sure that your car is in tip-top shape for that out-of-town excursion.”
Your brakes are doing a lot more work during long drives as opposed to your usual city routes. You’ll usually find yourself in situations where you need to reduce speed rapidly (you’ll almost certainly run into at least one stray dog, chicken or child crossing the road unexpectedly), or constantly step on the brakes to slow the car down during long downhill portions of your journey. Checking the condition of your brakes goes a long way in ensuring the safety of you and your passengers. Pay attention to the sound your car makes during braking, as it can sometimes be a helpful telltale sign if your brake pads are worn out and need replacing. Or, just don’t risk it and bring the car to a trusted mechanic to have them inspect your brakes for you.
CHECK YOUR LIGHTS
Chris Van Hoven EXECUTIVE EDITOR
Your car’s lights play an important role in keeping you and your passengers safe as you head towards your destination. Besides making your surroundings more visible, your lights communicate your intentions to other drivers. Headlight lenses should be kept clean and clear. Check each turn signal and make sure they’re working properly. Most importantly, make sure your brake lights function as intended and are clearly visible to drivers behind you.

eading through some of my favorite sources of motoring gossip, and peeking into what may be hitting the pavement this year, there are so many yummy cars that caught my eye. Despite the pandemic! Let me start with Honda’s pocket rocket. Apparently, a new Civic type R was spotted doing its thing around the Nurburgring. I am not sure what they have put under its bonnet, but I’m pretty confident it’s going to be every bit as easy and exciting to drive fast as the previous type R. MINI seems to be intent to lead the quick hatch market into the electric realm with its John Cooper Works GPE, which aims to do 0-100km/h in about 5 seconds. Two days in the Nurburgring with the JCW Mini was a highlight in my life, I can only wonder what this would be like. Toyota’s new GR 86 has grown some muscles with the more powerful 2.4L Boxtertype engine that now releases 227hp (173kW). A little more muscle was all it needed, really. Can’t wait to try it. In the same vein, I feel as if my prayers have been answered with the Porsche Cayman GT4 RS. Finally, a sports mod package worthy of the great handling and balance the Cayman possesses. I couldn’t help but watch an onboard video of its 07:04:51 lap time around the Nurburgring, which left me salivating! Perhaps an attempt of BMW to address their more subtle clientele or just those who wish to “pull the wool over the Mrs.’ head”, BMW is coming out with the M3 Touring, which is an M3 station wagon hehehe… Lotus too, may have new changes. They have taken the Elise, Exige, and Evora and produced an all-new Lotus Emira. Still the lightweight sports car with either the 2-liter four cylinder, turbocharger AMG engine, or the super charged 3.5-liter V6.
22
MARCH 2022 • C-MAGAZINE.COM
Interestingly, Maserati seems to be dipping their toes into Ferrari’s world again and made a mid-engine supercar, the MC2. Already seen flying around Goodwood’s Festival of Speed, it had a lightweight 3.0-liter V6 that still puts out 613hp (463kW). Across the Atlantic, Corvette continues with its new mid-engine platform, but the new V06 keeps to the old-school, normally aspirated V8 661hp (493kW) and has gotten it to rev to 8600RPM. I would love to feel that!
“In the same vein, I feel as if my prayers have been answered with the Porsche Cayman GT4 RS.”
Georges B. Ramirez SENIOR EDITOR
Then there is the Ferrari 296 GTB Hybrid, and it is a thing of beauty! Kudos to the Ferrari design team. But, it is not just for show, like the F1 race car, they used a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 but augmented with an electric motor and all told, that’s 819hp (610kW) and does 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds. Another exciting and certainly unique possible introduction from Ferrari is an SUV, the Purosangue, which may also have a hybrid version soon. McLaren has gone for a turbo-charged V6 hybrid in their new Actura. It may be their smaller model, but will put out 671hp (500kW) and a range of 30 km on electric mode. The Mercedes-AMG Project One has been seen tested on road, as well as the Nurburgring. This car has a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine and hybrid powertrain, basically Mercedes’s F1 engine tuned down for street use, which puts out 986hp (735kW) and yes, detuned is a relative statement. Its EV range is 24 km. Then there is the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which is anything but posh. It’s a street legal (Le Mans)-type race car and when its 1000hp and 546 lbs. of torque is released, it bolts to 100km/h in under 3.0 seconds Another Lotus to look out for and one that really is a radical change for them, is the Lotus Evija. It‘s Lotus’ first EV and doesn’t follow Colin Chapman’s small engine, lightweight mantra. It’s a full-sized hypercar that puts out 1,973hp (1,471kW)!!! Though it is said that they have stayed focused on the performance range that Lotus lovers enjoy, which is on the track and twisty roads rather than putting priority on top end speed. I will end this list of goodness with Lamborghini’s successor to the Aventador, which may make its appearance this year and is said to have joined the hybrid powertrain trend as well.

Slipstream Things to Get Pumped Up About Formula 1 in 2022
F
ormula 1’s hybrid era could not have ended in a more dramatic and historic fashion. From the very beginning, the 2021 season gave us nail-biting battles as Max Verstappen searched for his first-ever Driver’s Title and Lewis Hamilton drove the hardest he’s had in years for an elusive, recordbreaking eighth world championship. Now that this spectacle is over, what can we expect for the upcoming season? Luckily for us fans, the high from last season is immediately followed by Formula 1’s entry into a new era. For the first time in decades, cars experience a sudden evolution in aerodynamic design and engineering. The rich pool of young, next-generation drivers will also have another year under their belts. Here are five things to look forward to as we enter the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship.
1. NEW REGULATIONS, NEW CARS
The most obvious change this season are the brand-new cars all 10 teams will sport. After years of research, engineers designed the newly regulated cars to be able to follow each other more closely, enabling more overtaking and thrilling races. Aerodynamics throughout have been simplified, a complete revolution of Formula 1 design. Cars will now also use 18-inch wheels, moving away from the 13-inch ones Formula 1 has used for more than 30 years. While this is not expected to have significant changes in lap times, the new wheels are made to increase stability and lessen tire flex, meaning teams can worry less about turbulence and costs.
2. CAN FERRARI AND MCLAREN TAKE ANOTHER STEP? Although the Rosso Corsa cars finished the season as the best of the rest, McLaren also
24
MARCH 2022 • C-MAGAZINE.COM
enjoyed its own success in the first half of the season. Lando Norris was a consistent staple in Q3 and came close to multiple podiums in the early races. On his second year with the papaya cars, Daniel Riccardo took a while to figure out his new machine last year but eventually figured it out later on; including a maiden win with the team at Monza. As we enter the 2022 season, the two historic teams now have their own duos of talented and proven drivers to show for. It’s all up to their new cars now.
3. GEORGE RUSSELL VS. LEWIS HAMILTON
Sans the 2016 World Championship season, Lewis Hamilton didn’t only dominate Formula 1’s hybrid era, but also the top spot Mercedes. With George Russell finally in the fold, the Hamilton-Russell storyline at the Silver Arrows will surely be one to watch for. Russell is a generational talent who had to wait longer than his peers to get his hands on the top team. Will he play the team game and help Hamilton towards the 8th title? Or will the hunger reign supreme?
4. MAX VERSTAPPEN’S TITLE DEFENSE
“For the first time in decades, cars experience a sudden evolution in aerodynamic design and engineering.”
Paolo de Borja MANAGING EDITOR
It was better late than never for Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing. In the final year of the hybrid era, Red Bull can finally say that they put one of their drivers at the top of the world. The new Formula 1 season, however, can be considered a clean slate for all teams. While Verstappen’s grit and determination have never been in question, it will be exciting for us to see how Red Bull developed their new-generation car while grinding it out last year.
5. WHO TAKES THE TOP SPOT AT THE SCUDERIA?
As soon as Charles Leclerc entered Formula 1 with Sauber in 2018, we knew he was getting that Ferrari seat in no time. True enough, the most decorated team in Formula 1 history called him up by the next season. As Sebastian Vettel struggled in his last year with Ferrari, the young Leclerc showed his talent even in an extremely inferior 2020 car. When Carlos Sainz joined the team last year, it was still pretty clear that Leclerc was the favorite. The results of last season, however, begs to differ. Sainz finished the campaign fifth in the standings and 5.5 points ahead of Leclerc who finished seventh.

THE FABULOUS white sporty luxury sedan you see here is the new 7th generation BMW 3-series (G20) in 318i Sport packaging. Compared with the more entry level 316i to 320d models previously sold in our market with the older generations however, this current 318i Sport drives with more ferocity than a E30 325e and it is as quick as the old 325i of the same old generation but with substantially more luxury, better handling, more safety, ability, and space. I compare it to the 2nd generation BMW E30 because that is the benchmark standard for dynamic premium performance in a compact sedan. Try driving a well-maintained BMW 325i E30 and you will appreciate how great it is and why it remains the absolute standard for the genre. There are numerous aesthetic and equipment upgrades in the new BMW 318i

The 2022 BMW 318i Sport may have a modest moniker but it performs with a very big heart while simultaneously delivering remarkable luxury, comfort, presence, and space in measures that exceeds every generation before it. The only issue that may affect its commercial success in our market is its price. But if you can afford it and you have always dreamt of owning the very best sports sedan in its class, the original standard bearer, then your dream can be fulfilled.

Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 FL The Premium Compact Crossover Challenger Words: Kevin C. Limjoco Photos: Isabel N. Delos Reyes
THE MERCEDES-BENZ GLC (X253/C253) model series is a compact luxury crossover which was introduced in 2015 and is the significantly uprated replacement of the now defunct GLK-class (X204) which is regarded as the C-class sedan on stilts since inception. Though there are multiple variants produced by Mercedes-Benz that include a sportier designed Coupé and electrified models for other markets, the Philippines at the moment carries this lone, new, eager, purely rear-wheel driven 2021 GLC 200 FL model. Compared to the last GLK-class, the GLC uses a completely new generation MRA platform that is shared with the sedan stablemates ranging from the current C-class (W205) to the outgoing S-class (W222). The GLC uses a wheelbase that is positioned between the standard and long-wheelbase C-class and is 117 mm longer than the GLK chassis at 2873 mm with a body that is longer by 127 mm and wider by 3 mm. The body is 30 mm shorter than the standard C-class sedan but it has a taller 196 mm ceiling, so it feels more spacious in the cabin compared to the sedan.

With almost as much power as a GLC 250 4Matic, which uses slightly more potent tuning on the same 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, the GLC 200 saves the extra weight of the 4Matic system but it also does not have trick 48V Mild Hybrid system to further improve fuel efficiency and performance. but if you intend to actually drive your Mercedes-Benz investment as intended as a personal luxury compact crossover, then it would be money well spent. The build quality is naturally excellent. The cabin is well appointed and comfortable for 5 adults. When the rear seats are folded, the rear trunk can handle 1,614 liters of load; with the rear seats in their fixed positions, the capacity is a modest 538 liters. The brakes are appropriately strong with 13.5-inch vented front discs with twin-piston calipers and 12.6-inch vented rear discs with single-piston calipers. The 5-spoke 18” x 8J” alloys are wrapped with Pirelli Scorpion Verde 235/60R18 103V tires. The balance of comfort and dynamic performance makes the Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 an appealing daily driver for buyers wanting a more versatile premium tall wagon with C-class proportions.

Land Rover Defender 90 S D240 Reinterpretation of an Icon Words: Kevin C. Limjoco Photos: Isabel N. Delos Reyes
THOUGH ROLLS-ROYCE has their own premium luxury SUV called the Cullinan, and Land Rover’s own Range Rover model series has been the Gold Standard for the genre, in my opinion, it is their Defender 110 and 90 series that truly transcends them all and could possibly be the most universally desirable premium SUV across the entire segment. Since its inception, the priorities of the Defender have always been ability, versatility, and reliability under any weather and surface condition. It certainly helps set the standard that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II herself has been driving them since her youth.

leather instead of cloth (unlike the 110, though I would also prefer cloth for our environment) and the rear accommodations actually have very good legroom, however the seats do not recline. The rear trunk is surprisingly small, but the surface treatment is very cool though we actually had to fold down the rear seats to handle two full-size golf bags. The Defender 90 has a ground clearance of 226 mm (8.9 in) with standard suspension whilst the 110 and the 90 with air suspension have a maximum ground clearance of 291 mm (11.5 in). Thriving automobile icons are fast becoming a rarity despite an abundance of genuinely great vehicles available in the market. There aren’t many vehicles sold today that are deeply rooted with heritage and are as universally desired as a Land Rover Defender. What began life as a British alternative to the Willys Jeep after World War II, the Land Rover Defender was simply named as the Ninety when it was launched in 1948. Just like the whole all-new Land Rover Defender series, the 90 uses the new aluminum unibody (monocoque) on the scalable D7x (the “x” stands for extreme, being at least 3 times more robust than before and currently the most rigid chassis in the whole Land Rover family) Premium Lightweight Architecture (PLA) aluminum platform. It features four-wheel drive and locking differentials for navigating treacherous terrain on fully independent suspension instead of solid axles. The test unit also had, just as the 110 tested before it, a variety of optional equipment that includes a very well designed raised air intake even if the 90 can already ford through 850 mm of water without it. The electrical system is tested to IP67 standard so, in theory, the Defender 90 should be able to withstand about an hour submerged in water without damage. The new electronic architecture uses 85 ECUs that communicate at up to 100Mb/s and manage everything from the LED headlights to the intelligent AWD system. The Defender 90 S D240 uses a very refined, efficient, and gutsy inline-4 2.0-liter twin-turbodiesel that is light and potent. Many markets like ours retain the D240 powerplant as it reliably manages our lower grade fuel found throughout our archipelago efficiently. The new 90 mixes elements of the original's functionality with the technology and equipment you expect from a premium luxury sport utility vehicle. The exposed screw heads, aluminum panels, and ruggedized surfaces blend enticingly with the new padded areas. The magnesium beam that

Jaguar F-Type P300 Underappreciated Splendor Words: Kevin C. Limjoco Photos: Isabel N. Delos Reyes
THE SENSUAL aluminum bodied Jaguar F-type coupé and convertible have been embraced as the spiritual successors to the legendary E-type since 2013. The model is generally considered to be more of a 2-door Grand Tourer rather than a focused sports car despite having very deep abilities in the more powerful SVR and R-models, especially the current supercharged-V8 R P575 that accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and has a 300 km/h top speed. I personally consider it a proper and stunning sports car, even with this modest, new standard entry model: the P300, powered by an eager 296 bhp 2.0-liter turbocharged engine channeling propulsion to the rear wheels.

prominent cacophony and exhaust crackle. The crisp handling and brake power are good. The Jag lives for the corners with its excellent steering, 52.2:47.8 front/rear weight distribution and generous mixed rubber. The optional livery is not to my taste; thankfully, Jaguar Philippines can individualize a customer unit to their exact requirements. The updates to the high-quality interior furnishings have been subtly improved. The most obvious carry-over feature that I like is the motorized central dashboard top that opens up to expose the vents when the climate control is activated. The analog instruments have now been replaced with an all-new 12.3-inch main instrument display with switchable designs to suit your preference. The 10-inch Touch Pro infotainment system with rear camera and parking sensors now has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and is backed up by a fabulous 380-watt 10-speaker Meridian Sound System. As a premium luxury 2-door coupé, the new Jaguar F-Type P300 is ultimately desirable because of other additional factors; like its overall design, luxury, pedigree, and pride of ownership. However, aside from its challenging acquisition cost, dynamically and for much less money combined with roadster versatility and a more usable trunk, the BMW Z4 M40i is superior. Then there is the brilliant Toyota GR Supra for even less money than the BMW Z4. I apologize for stating the obvious but having said all that, the F-Type P300 is still a Jaguar. I just wish it had the more potent powerplants available combined with even better brakes and quad exhaust system for the same money.

2022 GAC GS4 1.5T GDI
Going back to fundamentals is something that's easily forgotten in today's techforward world. Thankfully, GAC decides to focus on the parts that matter with their GAC GS4, giving importance to what a car is meant to do in the first place - drive well and ride comfortably.

MARCH 2022 • C-MAGAZINE.COM
Sculpted sides and a semifloating roof all contribute to a modern-looking crossover that still retains great road presence.
There was a time
the likes of the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 - were all the rage. Possessing both practical space and comfort at a price not too far apart from compact cars at the time, it made a lot of sense to purchase a compact crossover for the family, or as a personal vehicle. That trend was enjoyed by the likes of Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Hyundai, and Kia, who each had an offering in the segment, and it was a trend that continued until prices rose to levels that moved them closer to being luxury purchases instead of practical purchases. These days, the price point that these compact crossovers once occupied (the 900,000 – 1 million range) now belongs to the smaller subcompact crossovers, as compact crossovers also proceeded to grow in size. One of the more disruptive aspects of the surge of Chinese brands in the market is that they began to offer their products at the prices that we perceive to be “practical” – which is substantially lower than the direct Japanese and Korean competitors. One of those brands is GAC, and their new GAC GS4 is a perfect example of how you can still get a compact crossover at an extremely reasonable price. But was anything compromised to keep prices down? That’s what we’re here to find out. Known as the Trumpchi GS4 in China, the 2022 GAC GS4 was recently introduced in its second-generation form, bringing with it some important updates over its predecessor. Starting with the redesigned exterior, the new GS4 uses LED headlights and LED daytime running lights up front and LED tail lights at the rear. It’s a shame we don’t get the fog lights that are equipped on the Chinese models, with GAC opting to use the fog light housing as an additional design element instead. The design itself is safe and inoffensive, with muscular cues and 17-inch alloy wheels, which we would now classify as a “traditional” crossover design aesthetic. The GAC GS4 does, however, succumb to a trend that I’m not particularly fond of, which many other manufacturers have been adopting - using fake exhausts. I understand that it’s done purely for aesthetic reasons, but I’ve never been a fan. This secondgeneration model is wider and taller than its predecessor, but also rides lower, with a lower ground clearance compared to the previous model.

Inside, the GS4 is impressively striking, particularly with its 2-tone interior configuration. The black and caramel motif is a refreshing change among a sea of all-black interiors, but it’s great that the all-black option is there if you prefer a more traditional approach. Like the rest of GAC’s product line, build quality is impressive, with excellent fit and finish and abundant soft touch plastics. Everything is seamlessly integrated as well, without any bits looking like they were placed as an afterthought. For example, instead of the “floating touchscreen” that seems to be the trend these days, the 8-inch infotainment system is housed within the central console, so nothing sticks out above the dash. Similarly, small details like the tweeter speaker placement are well thought out. Instead of placing the tweeter speakers on top of the dash, they are once again integrated into the central design, which results in a cleaner, more premium look. The infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay connectivity and powers six speakers. The instrument cluster takes the form of a 3.5-inch digital screen sandwiched between the analogue

speedometer and tachometer dials. The small screen isn’t in full color, but it’s clear, sharp, and gets the job done just as well. The seats are comfortable and highly supportive. Utilizing a 6-way and 4-way manual adjustment for the driver and passenger seat respectively, both seats use highly-breathable, low-odor, water-based PVC leather which feels great to the touch. At the back, there’s enough room for three passengers to sit comfortably, and the middle passenger even gets his own headrest. You’ll also find nice touches at the back like an AC vent and charging ports. There’s room for 470-liters of cargo at the back, which is standard fare for cars in its class, and the rear seats can be folded down for a total of 1,560 liters of available space. Lastly, the GS4 has an expansive panoramic roof, which is a great way to give your passengers a better view of your surroundings during out-oftown trips. Powering the GAC GS4 is a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed automatic Aisin gearbox that produces 166 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. It’s exceptionally responsive, with barely a hint of any turbo lag – an accomplishment in itself. Shifts are imperceptibly smooth and intelligent. Power is introduced steadily as you step on the gas – no shocking jolts here. Overtakes are easily done even at speed with ample power to spare. Lastly, the engine does all this in relative silence. It’s an impressively refined offering from the Chinese manufacturer, with good fuel economy as well – 10 kilometers per liter during combined city and highway conditions. In terms of safety, the GAC GS4 comes with a rather standard set of safety features, including dual front and side airbags, ABS, stability control, a rear parking camera, parking sensors, brake hold assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system. But perhaps the biggest contributor to its safety is its use of high tensile steel, which comprises 62 percent of the GS4’s body. Because of this strong shell, the GS4 feels sturdy and solid throughout. Vibrations are kept at a minimum, bumps and road irregularities are absorbed well, resulting in a highly comfortable drive, and doors close with a satisfying, weighty thud. The most surprising aspect of the GAC GS4 isn’t really its build quality. After all, it’s a trait shared by the rest of the GAC stable so that’s something we’ve come to expect. What we weren’t expecting was its

price point. With an SRP of PhP 1,098,000, the GAC GS4 shares the same price range as subcompact cars offered by Japanese car brands and seriously undercuts the rest of its competitors in the segment. Sure, some convenience and safety features were sacrificed – the lack of power seats, additional airbags (rear airbags would be nice), fog lamps, and a more comprehensive safety suite – but it does get the basics down perfectly in terms of mechanical features and build quality. At the end of the day, despite some features missing from our wish list, GAC focuses on what matters most – how the GS4 feels to drive. And with a solid chassis and platform, a highly refined and capable powertrain, and premium levels of driving comfort offered at subcompact car prices, the GAC GS4 becomes an option that isn’t only difficult to ignore, but one that merits serious consideration as well.

s much as the grand things will inherently get the spotlight, there will always be an appreciation for the minimal executions through minimalism. You can see that the people’s attention is starting to gravitate towards the understated, the simple, and the “budget friendly”. I think the reason being: there is an artful execution to the whole concept of minimalism and therefore a beauty that goes with it. Now, I am not saying that the Toyota Raize is a minimalistic car, because what will come into mind for most is “bare essentials”, which it isn’t. The Toyota Raize, more accurately, is an execution of everything a 2022 daily driver should be in their smallest crossover in the Philippines yet. If there is anything minimalist about the all-new Toyota Raize, it’s the size for the crossover. Everything else is definitely a treat that I am sure everyone will enjoy.
Form and Function
With a wheelbase of 2520mm, it is only 2.6 inches longer than a Toyota Wigo, which is Toyota Motor Philippine’s smallest car in their line-up. In total length, the Raize is less than a foot longer than the Wigo. If you are reading this, I am sure you probably have seen a Toyota Wigo up close and personal. The Toyota Raize is pretty much similar size, just a bit taller. With a ground clearance of 200mm, it definitely sits in the crossover territory, making it perfect for the city streets but capable of imperfect roads if the occasion arises. It steals its bumper and skirt design cues from its bigger siblings like the Toyota Fortuner LTD and RAV4. While it makes the big boys look macho and elegant, for some reason, the Toyota Raize has this futuristic look that you can imagine it being drawn in a Japanese anime set in a cyberpunk future. I guess that is what happens when you have so many sharp lines with the minimalism thing going on. But if you aren’t sold that there is a futuristic vibe going on from the outside, you might start to believe it once you go inside.
Interior and Equipment
With the dominant design shape of the Toyota Raize being hexagon, it isn’t a surprise that the interior does give a modern feel. For the Toyota Raize 1.2 E, that theme ends there. For the 1.2 G and 1.0 Turbo, it gets more of the cutting-edge ambiance with its meter cluster being completely digital. And with that comes

customizable settings that give you options to make it the way you want it. Whichever Toyota Raize you get, they all will come with a touchscreen infotainment system that has Android Auto and Apple Carplay. The 1.0 Turbo, being top-of-the-line, gets a 9-inch screen while the rest get an 8-inch screen. Good job to Toyota Motor Philippines for giving all variants that connectivity, since for a good number of buyers, it means a lot. For such a small car, the Toyota Raize will leave you really impressed when it comes to the versatility of the interior. You want to maximize the trunk as a 5-seater? You can make the trunk deeper. You want a flat bed? You can raise that trunk to line up with the passenger seats when folded down. And of course, the rear passenger seats have a 60/40 split. If people find the Toyota Wigo sufficient in space for a mini-compact car, it is safe to say that the Toyota Raize will give the same feeling for those looking for a mini-crossover.
Driving Impressions
The Toyota Raize comes with a 1.2L engine and a CVT transmission that works so well in
the mini-crossover segment. So much so that it makes me wish they used this same CVT engine on their Wigo. It is that kind of great. The Toyota Raize responds in a way that you would expect it to right off the bat while other cars in its competition, you would have to get used to its “sluggish” response which is really more of a delay-by-design for efficiency’s sake. So, I wouldn’t be surprised that this is not as efficient as the other cars in its class, but I love the responsiveness of the Toyota Raize 1.2 G, which makes it a joy to drive around the city and highway. As for the steering, the input doesn’t feel disconnected and too light. If anything, it feels planted and intuitive. The body roll of the Toyota Raize is minimal as well, crediting it to their small size, weight, and MacPherson strut suspension at the front and torsion beam at the rear. Overall, the drive of the Toyota Raize will not surprise you, and that is the great thing. Its familiarity makes the driving aspect of the Toyota Raize fit like a glove.
Who Is This Car For?
To say that the Toyota Raize 1.2 G is the perfect
crossover for the first-time car buyer is an understatement and to a degree, misleading. With so many kinds of first-time car buyers nowadays and with the number of available cars to buy right now, there are so many options to choose from. But those who gravitate towards the Toyota Raize and particularly the 1.2 G, you can tell that they are looking for maximum content with the minimum amount of car, or in this case, crossover/SUV. It is definitely top of its competition when it comes to standard equipment, which other car companies miss. Others think that it is all about how many things you can offer. But when time flies, people will then realize that it is the quality and the careful curation of a car company that makes the difference. Some car companies can install 10 standard equipment in a car, but the truth is only 5 of them get used. But to get those 10 into the car, cost cuts have to be made somewhere. Other car companies carefully select and boil down to, lets say, that same 5 standard equipment instead of 10. So on paper, it looks like they are offering less. But in practice, it allows them to spend the same budget in order to maximize the quality for the things that really matter. And that is what Toyota Motor Philippines has done with the Toyota Raize: giving everything a daily driver should have in their smallest crossover yet, which might be the little big impact we need to see with Kei cars in the Philippines.

s someone who loves putting together computers and tinkering with electronics, people are shocked that it was only a few weeks ago that I found out about the vast world of mechanical keyboards and how convenient it is to put together just like PCs today. I was new to all this, but with the help of RJ from AlphaKeebsPH, he was able to assemble a keyboard that catered to my wants, needs and budget. But before we could even start with the process, I had to understand what I was getting into so that RJ of AlphaKeebsPH could recommend components for a keyboard that was tailor made for me.
Why Use a Mechanical Keyboard?
Once you try it for yourself, you will never want to go back to the cheap and conventional membrane keyboard. As the name suggests, membrane keyboards uses a thin rubber layer together with electronics to activate a keystroke. This single rubber layer works for all the keys. In terms of feel, this will feel mushy and hitting a wall at the end of the keystroke, which may not sound like much now, but in the long run plays with the comfort of your fingers. The only reason why it is common is because it is cheap to manufacture. Mechanical switches, on the other hand, have a tactile feel when pressing down a key, making the keystroke feel more engaging. Since every key will have its own designated switch, mechanical keyboards tend to have a significantly longer lifespan. They also hardly wear out, the keys are more stable, and deliver an improved and comfortable typing experience that no membrane keyboard can match. The price for mechanical keyboards is high, but when you weigh all the benefits, these are definitely an investment worth considering if you are a heavy user of keyboards.

Why a Custom Keyboard?
Admittedly, there are a lot of off-the-shelf mechanical keyboards in the market that are well priced, even versus membrane keyboards. But with those keyboards, you will end up choosing something that you will have to conform to, meaning that you will have to settle with things that you might not like if they are present. When you go for a custom keyboard on the other hand, every element of the keyboard is for you to choose. And if later down the line if one wants to upgrade, there is an upgrade path for just that. If we go on a deep dive into custom mechanical keyboards, it will take a lot more than the allotted pages to cover it. Since this is a beginner’s guide, we will discuss the important elements to help you choose the components needed to get a custom keyboard fit for you.
Types of Switches
Originally, I thought there were going to be a handful of types of switches, but with the number of brands and iterations available, there is so much to point out there. But there are 3 distinct switch feels to consider: • Clicky mechanical switches have a tactile bump when pressed and make an audible clicking noise. Some examples of these switches could be Cherry MX Blues, or Kailh Blues. This is perfect for those who primarily type. • Tactile mechanical switches include a small bump that you will feel while typing, without the audible clicking noise. Some examples of these could be Cherry MX Browns, Zealios V2s, Kaihl Speed Bronze. This is the best middle-ground for typist and gamers. • Linear mechanical switches remove the bump inside of the key switch, which results in less noise and a smoother key press from top to bottom. Examples of these are Cherry MX Blacks, Cherry MX Reds, Tealios V2s, Greetech Blacks. With this characteristic, this type of switch is perfect for gamers.
For me, I wanted the tactile mechanical switches and chose the Gateron Brown. Also take note that different switches have different pins at the bottom, so make sure they are for the board you choose them for.

After deciding what switches to use, the next big step is choosing the layout. When considering the layout, you will have to know your keyboard lifestyle and what you look for. Do you even use the number pad on the side? Do you utilize the function keys heavily? Would you benefit from a smaller or portable keyboard? When you have those behaviors boiled down, then you can decide which layout is best for you. There are tons of layouts to choose from, but these are the general keyboard layouts available: I. With The Number Pad a. 100% — this is the conventional keyboard you have probably seen. b. 96% — the same number of keys as the 100%, but with no gaps in between. II. Without The Number Pads

Modifications
If you really want to delve deeper into custom mechanical keyboards, you will find that you can choose the cases, plates, and printed circuit boards. You can also add stabilizers and sound deadening material to further enhance the experience. You can even lubricate every switch to have a consistently smooth keystroke! This all may sound exclusively high end, but mechanical keyboards have come a long way and are now reasonably affordable and accessible. What I did was go to a customizer like AlphaKeebsPH and selected the things I wanted on my keyboard: tactile switches, compact as possible, white backlights, and all the keys still available. Wireless was a bonus for me. He selected a pre-made board, which in my case was the Royal Kludge RK100 with hot-swappable switches. He then replaced and lubricated all the switches to the tactile Gateron Browns.
Conclusion
When you consider how big the custom mechanical keyboard world is, what we discussed here is barely scratching the surface. But there are so many resources over the internet and small companies that can give you the joy of having a personalized keyboard that will last you for years. Take it from me, I initially thought that this was an excessive hobby. But once you do a little research and experience it for yourself, you then realize how reasonable and enjoyable the experience can be. Only after trying a mechanical keyboard myself and now living with a custom one tailor fit to me, I can now see how it delivers a typing experience that is more enjoyable and comfortable.

The History of Crossovers
I
n the mid-90s, something bizarre emerged in the world of automobiles. It was a combination of people’s automobile categories at the time; part sedan, part minivan, and part SUV. Decades later, it now roams roads in bunches, becoming one of the most sought-after automobiles by consumers worldwide. This is the crossover. Although a specific definition never materialized, the word crossover came about simply because it resembles the qualities of a sedan and an SUV. Back then, sedans were the way to go for many.

Featuring 'passenger-car comfort, plus 4WD security for allweather security,' the AMC Eagle is recognized as the first crossover vehicle.
Back then, the SUV was for adventurers. People who loved going off-road and climbing mountains were the perfect targets for manufacturers. SUVs were commonly reserved for those with deeper pockets. After all, they came with all the goodies one would need for all-terrain fun. For the utilitarians, the pickup truck has perfected this formula for decades. Just look at the historic run the Ford F-Series has had. Then there were station wagons. They were familycentric and could carry cargo, but people soon realized that they lacked the ride height of an SUV. With crossovers, manufacturers answered the call of consumers, while also making a historic business decision for themselves. Simply said, the evolving demand was a golden opportunity to sell more cars. This new breed of automobiles used a unibody construction based on passenger cars, in contrast to most American SUVs that were mostly based on manufacturers’ established pickup trucks. And while the foundation is found on sedans, a crossover body
closely resembles that of an SUV but is more rounded-off in the corners. The raised suspension is also meant to achieve a higher drive feel, without necessarily having the full capabilities of the SUV. Think of the crossover as a beefed-up wagon. Look at the AMC Eagle. While American Motors Corporation did not use the word ‘crossover’ at the time, many consider it to be the first one to come out of an automotive assembly line. The Eagle closely resembled the popular American station wagon of its time. A quick search would show that it’s basically the body of a wagon attached to bigger wheels and a raised suspension system. The Eagle was introduced by AMC in 1979. In production from 1980 to 1988, the final year was carried out under Chrysler Corporation following its acquisition of AMC. The Eagle was based on the AMC Concord that came as a four-door sedan, two-door coupe, three-door hatchback, and a five-door station wagon. Despite having the platform of

a passenger car, AMC equipped the Eagle with permanent all-wheel-drive, claiming they were able to do so without sacrificing the driving comfort of a regular vehicle. Subaru did come out with the Leon in 1972, a four-wheel-drive station wagon, but it did not have a raised suspension. Due to its size and similarities with the Concord, the Eagle was easier to drive on a daily basis than most SUVs. Such a concept was foreign in the automotive arena in the past. Ahead of its time, the AMC Eagle was the calm before the storm. It bridged the gap between rugged SUVs and passenger cars in an affordable manner. The Eagle’s popularity may not have peaked the same way as early Subarus or the RAV4, but it opened the gates for the other manufacturers to follow suit. The real revolution came in the 1990s. Enter the Toyota RAV4. Consider this the point of no return. Constructed on a new platform that shared the components with the Carina

and Corolla, the first-generation RAV4, or the XA10 series, marked the true arrival of crossovers — the look and aura of an SUV in a unibody platform. First introduced in Japan in 1994, the original RAV4 quickly gained a following even before its arrival in the United States two years later. In 1997, it was named the Automobile of the Year by Automobile Magazine. As you can see, the RAV4 didn’t need long to take the world by storm. It was rugged and came in different forms and sizes — a three-door hard top, a five-door, and even a three-door convertible with a soft-top. Globally, it’s one of the most recognizable models Toyota put out in that decade. The RAV4 offered off-road capabilities with city driving comfort. Family friendly, but cool to drive. Not too big, but generous with cargo space. When it comes to fuel economy, it can go toe-totoe with a passenger car. The RAV4 basically screamed the

future. Fast-forward to today, the first-generation model is aging gracefully and is looking like a future classic. The crossover has taken many steps forward since then. Nowadays, most, if not all, car companies have at least one crossover in their current lineup. Heck, even Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini has the Urus to show. RollsRoyce? They have the Cullinan. They simply work. It just goes to show how much the automotive scene has evolved in the last four decades. Locally, car companies and consumers continue to move on from the passenger cars of the past — a past when Corollas, Civics, and Lancers were staples in city streets and parking lots. and boring. They feel that cars of today lack the character and philosophy cars of the past emanate. Nevertheless, most people who buy cars are not gearheads into sportscars or powerful performance sedans. They just need something to get them from Point A to B. And sometimes, they’ll want something that can carry more people and cargo. The crossover solves all this. Almost three decades ago, car manufacturers and consumers chose to fill a gaping hole between passenger cars and SUVs. Since the arrival of the RAV4, the market for crossovers has never looked back. If the present tells us anything, it's that AMC and Toyota got the formula right.

t’s a pity that most of today’s carcrazy youth will never get up-close and personal with what’s called a carburetor. They will never come across iconic carburetor manufacturers such as Weber, Solex, Dell’Orto, SU, Stromberg, Rochester, Carter, and the dinner plate-sized Holley (4-barrel) Dominator plus many more. Being an integral part of the internal combustion engine, it has come a long way since automobile pioneer Karl Benz first developed it during the late 19th century. Despite evolving into various designs and configurations by numerous persons, its integral purpose has remained constant, which is to blend the air and fuel as it enters the combustion chamber. A carburetor works the moment air goes towards the opening which is then forced to pass through a narrow kink called a venturi. This causes a drop in pressure, which in turn creates suction on the fuel pipe, which draws fuel that trickles down to precisely calibrated orifices (referred to as jets) in the fuel path of the carburetor. This rapidly moving mixture of air and fuel passes through the throttle valve, which is then sucked into the cylinders to create engine combustion. How much fuel flows depends on the position of the throttle valve or the ‘Butterfly Valve’ that swivels open and closes the pipe. As we all know, this is connected to the throttle pedal that most of us love to put flat on the floor. As such, during Wide Open Throttle (WOT) situations, gobs of air and fuel flow to the cylinders making the engine produce more power so that the car goes faster. Whether it’s tuning single or multiple carburetors for more power, the main objective here is that it can never be too

rich (too much gas) or too lean (not enough gas). In a perfect world, it should put out a stoichiometric ratio of 14.7:1 (air to gasoline ratio), meaning that for each mass unit of gasoline, 14.7 mass units of air are required. Back in the day, digital air/fuel ratio gauges or monitors were non-existent so most resorted to good, old-fashioned spark plug readings. This method entails making a full pass and then pulling out the plugs for inspection. Ideally, every plug tip should exhibit a

brownish color. Black, sooty plugs mean it’s too rich while white or light gray plugs indicate a lean mixture. You could say a lot of trial and error was required back then to get it right. There’s also what’s known as a ‘demon tune’ where most tuners would apply that last minute adjustment on the carb and rev the heck out of it before it races. Whether they’re adding more fuel or air or just clearing out the jets is anyone’s guess. It’s just a customary voodoo ritual that they do. Technically speaking, there are modern EFI units that look like a four-barrel carburetor but it’s actually a fully-programmable fuel injection unit. Then there’s those gloriously sounding Individual Throttle Bodies (ITB), which can also be tuned by swapping the fuel injectors and using a laptop. These modern alternatives may look and sound similar, but it doesn’t come close and compare with the old-school carburetor tuning. It gives a more personal feeling of involvement. Simply turning the idle screw or fiddling with what emulsion tubes to use with what main jets and its corresponding auxiliary venturis is a science all its own. That or making the primary and secondary throttle linkages work simultaneously with two-barrel downdraft OE carbs. Call it Old school, but there’s something magical about a Holley fourbarrel carburetor on a big block V8 engine or an array of Weber side draft carbs on an inline four or six-cylinder engine that looks so right. There’s something about it that evokes a visual language all their own and strongly personifies raw power in the purest mechanical sense. In fact, whenever I think about our twin Weber 45 side draft carbureted 3T engine, I swear I could still hear its throaty intake sound.

hat started out as a small group of old-school car enthusiasts has expanded into a huge community with regional chapters located as far as the Visayas region. What’s more, they recently celebrated their 18th-year anniversary at the Ortigas Technopoint parking building inside the CW Home Depot Ortigas Compound. I’m referring to the Old-Schooler Auto Club, founded way back in 2003 with its president Manny Martinez. The other co-founders of the club include Raul Capistrano, Roger Martinez, Andrew Caballero and Alvin Gorayeb. With a common passion for old-school cars, plus the camaraderie and friendship that the club offers, this explains why it continues to thrive and attract like-minded enthusiasts who grew up with such cars. After all, everyone is welcome here, whether the car is Japanese or European, provided it came out in 1987 or earlier. Like most of their meets, it’s always a visual treat to see all kinds of vehicles from the seventies and eighties which takes anyone back in time when cars were more mechanical and simpler. Since regular meets were put on hold when the pandemic struck, most members were really itching to take out their cars. So much that I’m guessing most of the machinery there haven’t been driven out in over a year. Overall, the event was a huge success with classic and modified Toyotas to the endless number of “Box-Type” Lancers, Volkswagens, Land Cruisers, Ford Escorts and more. The entire parking area was filled because of the huge turnout. In fact, club president Manny Martinez estimates around 80 to 100 cars turned out that kept coming and going during the daylong affair that lasted until the evening. Until the next meet, here are the highlights of the 18th-year anniversary of the Old-Schooler Auto Club.

n our local, old-school car community composed of collectors, enthusiasts and buyers alike, the words authentic and original mean a lot when describing a particular car. In most cases, it connotes a highly collectible example like a barn-find survivor car or one that’s been properly restored. But here’s the thing though, it’s been getting difficult to chance upon something special as the years go by. Luckily, once in a while such cars do exist, so I was surprised when I chanced upon this coupe that ticks all the right boxes with a rich provenance and has stayed with the same family since new, acting as its caretaker for the next generation. It's a second-generation Corolla Coupe that’s affectionately called “Mango,” simply because of its exterior shape, while others still prefer calling it “Sprinter.” For the record, Toyota did come up with a Corolla Sprinter Trueno and a Corolla Levin. But these twin-cam powered models were only limited to Japan. This explains why most of our local coupes have been modified to resemble “Sprinter” or Levin-inspired versions. Except our featured coupe, owned by Joey Sulit, who did everything possible to retain its original look just like back when it was new, with the exception of the TOM’S Igetta wheels. According to Joey, it was originally owned by his late uncle, Maximo G. Ramos, who used to be the Director and Administrator of the National Food Authority. Based on the original Delta

Motors Corporation, Quezon Avenue Delivery Receipt/Vehicle Gate Pass that they still have, his uncle got it on October 3, 1974 at 3:35 PM. Looking back, who could have predicted that it would play a huge part in Joey’s life and spark his interest for cars? As he recalls, “I actually grew up with it spending every weekend with my uncle driving
Just like a proper automotive archaeologist, Joey Sulit did a lot of research to faithfully repair/ replicate the restoration process of this heirloom coupe.
“I was surprised when I chanced upon this coupe that ticks all the right boxes with a rich provenance. Having stayed with the same family since new, acting as its caretaker for the next generation.”
around town. This was the start of my love for cars at the age of 12. Traffic was non-existent during that time and driving was a breeze. After my uncle passed away in 2000, it was just parked in the garage all covered up. It wasn’t until 2016 while visiting my aunt when surprisingly, she asked me to take the car out of the garage since it was taking up space and nobody was using it. She knew all along how I really like that car which I grew up with. I didn’t hesitate and immediately took the offer.” The coupe was taken straight to a friend’s shop where after a thorough assessment, they agreed on doing a full restoration, as Joey quips, “Luckily, most of the parts and accessories were
all intact.” With that, they paid close attention to the body work, to the point where they even hired a tinsmith who was experienced in repairing Seventiesera Corollas. Not to mention gathering all the information they could avail of to verify that every curve and angle of each repaired panel was correctly done. This is especially true as the Coupe had a lot of curved panels with angled creases reminiscent of cars from the Seventies. It was a huge undertaking that Joey describes as, “The restoration practically involved taking the car apart until the last bolt.” Just like a proper automotive archaeologist, Joey also sought out how to faithfully replicate the Lake Silver paint as indicated on the delivery receipt. To his surprise, they found the underside of the roof to be intact, which they used as a reference. Looking at the interior now, it’s pretty hard to tell which of the seats or panels have been redone, it’s really that immaculate. But not to the point where everything looks brand-new, which is correct as it retains the original feel and character of the car. The same care and manner of refurbishment was done with all the bright trims and badges that are all complete and fitted properly. Given that the odometer reading only showed 64, 352 kms is just unbelievable.
Barely used and sitting for almost ten years explains its low mileage numbers. Under the hood, the reliable K-series engine only needed minor work. Being a 3K-B engine, it denotes having a pair of 2-barrel, Aisin carburetors. Something that requires synchronizing to ensure that both carburetors open at the same rate and produce equal power. It’s kind of like having a twin-side set up but with fewer screws to work with. Joey also upgraded the distributor for a breakerless ignition system so as not to fumble with the archaic contact points if anyone can still remember using those. Overall, the whole restoration process has been rewarding for Joey as he explains, “Everything took 1 year and 3 months. It was a long but fulfilling journey to bring back to life an icon, legend, and an heirloom that will always stay with the family for years to come.” It’s certainly a family affair for them as even their daughter Nicole is actively involved in maintenance and driving duties. But here’s the best part as Joey puts it, “Years since it was restored, whenever we go out for a Sunday morning drive, it gives me pride and joy when people drive pass you, staring at your car and giving a thumbs up.” Now that’s one cool family affair built around an heirloom classic coupe.
It's a well-executed restoration, but not to the point where everything looks brand-new. Something which I feel is correct as it retains the original feel and character of the car.

vershadowed by the iconic 2000GT and other popular sports coupes that also bear the Toyota nameplate, it’s important to note that it all started with our featured 2-door compact sports car known as the Sports 800. History tells us that a prototype version dubbed as the “Toyota Publica Sports” was unveiled during the 1962 Tokyo Auto Show, marking Toyota’s foray towards producing its own sports car. However, eager buyers had to wait until 1965 when the Sports 800 was publicly made available. Featuring a removable roof section like a “Targa” top, a horizontally opposed 2-cylinder, air-cooled engine, lightweight monocoque construction and more. If you think about it now, those technologies are still relevant and most are still in use in today’s automobile manufacturing, making it quite ahead of its time. Even though it was produced until 1970, its low production numbers make it quite rare. But what’s even rarer is stumbling upon someone who’s willing to part with a historically significant Toyota. Proving that anything’s possible, Toyota enthusiast Jony Luz and his friend Ferdie managed to track down a Sports 800 as Jony explains, “After going over several examples up north, we finally found one in Manila. It was stored for years, body looked solid, no accident, no major repairs, interior complete, no funny stuff on it, except for missing bits and pieces, body trims were all there, to our surprise it was a numbers’ matching car, original upholstery with no cracks or tears, dash pod was perfect, last LTO sicker on it was from ’85.” It was too good to pass up, so a deal was made right there, and the car was immediately whisked away over to Jony’s shop. Before removing any screw or nut, here’s what should be done first together with having a build plan, prior to disassembly as Jony narrates, “Assess and keep in mind body parts or garnishes that are delicate, keeping inventory on what’s usable, and what’s needed. Even though it’s not a concourse-level project, we agreed on doing a proper restoration.” As for the unique engine, Jony opted to do a full

rebuild after failing to crank and turn over which he sensed was probably the main reason why it was placed in storage. In addition, the steering, suspension brakes and more were also in need of attention. Sounds normal and as to be expected when working on a classic car. “I was not ready for this project at first, quite skeptical, as I am not really into barn find restoration, but it was a Toyota, and all the right points were there, so I set myself up for the long tedious project. I accepted the

challenge and was given a free hand on the project.” The body work and paint were tackled first and surprisingly, it wasn’t a total rust bucket given that some panels were made from aluminum, “Luckily, the former owner had a proper undercoat on it, and the car was not left out in the open, I guess they loved and respected the car. The engine was overhauled along with the drivetrain, suspension, brakes, electrical, etc. Taking extra care on delicate trim parts,

bits and pieces, we were not in a rush, working on it as parts came in trickles, fuel and brake lines replaced, whole wiring harness was remanufactured, exhaust system remanufactured, and had to work on what we had. Lucky or not, we had the long 2020 (pandemic lockdown), my staff didn’t want to go home, so we concentrated working on this car alone. We got the car in yellow, trying several colors that would fit the car, I was so frustrated with it that it caused a long lull on the project, but ended up in its classic silver/black

combo. Then I upgraded the wheels to 13-inch Watanabe wheels with Yokohama tires to finish it up.” Sourcing for parts is always an issue when working on older cars, and this is where having a network of parts suppliers comes in handy, “Several mechanical parts were available locally, although took some persuasion from old Toyota parts suppliers for us to enter their dark, dusty, hot containers in their yards in Banawe, Binondo, and Pasay, such stress to go through those containers. But, there’s a lot of
old-school Toyota NOS parts found. They didn’t know they had it still, as parts inventory on the containers were never made.” If all else fails, there’s always the option of ordering parts direct from Japan. “A friend sourced some parts sold by old Japanese Toyota Sport 800 enthusiasts. The thing is, you had to prove to them, that parts were for personal use and not for resale. We got a bunch of NOS parts like external lenses, hood and trunk hinges, side view mirrors, gas cap, emblems, air cleaner. We even tried bidding on a brand-new steering wheel but it was outrageously expensive.” Overall, Jony Luz has done an excellent job of restoring this classic sports car without overdoing it that it would make the owner afraid of actually driving it for fear of damaging/ scratching something. These cars were built to be driven and enjoyed in my opinion as Jony quips, “It is not a done deal project, but it’s a Classic Toyota Sports 800 back on the street again!” I wholeheartedly agree.

ith our Wheel2Wheel Editor Maynard Marcelo’s graduation to the corporate world, I find myself literally back on the saddle. C! Magazine may primarily be an automotive publication; however, long before I started driving cars as a teenager back in the day, I rode motorcycles beginning back in 1982 on a Yamaha YZ80. In fact, I rode to school almost every day on a Honda C70 and Honda TM110 in grade school, then a Honda CB400 Hawk in high school. I come from a big family of riders on both motorcycles and horses. My family and I totally appreciate the glory of riding but we also understand the potential dangers that come with the experience. So, you all understand why we love motorcycles and why we have Wheel2Wheel. In the past 15 years, the motorcycle industry has been linearly growing to meet the explosion of consumer demands even before the pandemic outbreak. With the pandemic, sales for motorcycles and scooters expanded growth exponentially to meet the vast logistical requirements for consumer deliveries. The growth of the industry has been great but with the huge numbers on the road, regulations and new rules should now be applied swiftly to protect both the riders and

their automobile road sharers, as well as the general public. Following the Honda Safety School, the Ducati Riding Experience and the California Superbike School programs, which are purely voluntary, more, if not all, motorcycle distributors and dealers should have compulsory rider training programs to educate their customers not just for their personal and tandem rider safety but also for the safety of the general public. I can’t emphasize that enough. I recommend that for two-wheel purchases above P100,000.00 that the training be complimentary. It is so important for everyone. I recognize that business is tough for everyone today but sellers should only responsibly sell motorbikes to properly licensed riders to begin with. Generally, riders who are also car owners are conscientious about how they ride and have mutual respect for road sharing; unfortunately, it is not the case the other way around. On a last note, with proper education and training, the need to have excessively noisy aftermarket exhaust systems on motorbikes with the reasoning that it heightens rider safety would be handled accordingly. Not only is the increasing noise pollution a massive concern for the general public but the increase of exhaust emissions harms everyone and the environment.
“In 1775, James Watt introduced the world to the unit of measure we hold so dear, the horsepower, which translated to a horse lifting 150 pounds to a height of 220 feet in 1 minute which is equal to 550 ft-lb/sec. The core form of human mobility and resource management begins with the noble horse.”

iding has never been so gratifying in the middle of this pandemic. We were on such a roller coaster ride, we now cherish each and every moment we flip the switch and take the road that leads where your soul wants to be. Motorcycling has evolved in a lot of different ways. It has evolved into more than just a mode of transportation; it is now a way of life. Just like mobile phones that simply have everything in it, motorcycle manufacturers followed suit into amplifying the motorcycle riding experience by adding a lot of features when you take the road. CFMoto Philippines has recently launched one of its most anticipated variants of the Retroinspired lineup of the 700CL-X. This latest model embodies a café racer flavor fused with modern lines and elements. It now comes with trendy bar end type side mirrors, the familiar X LED headlight and the racing cowl at the rear portion. It is plain, sexy, and exciting at the same time. The Kiska designed motorcycle is a visual representation of what a sophisticated modern café racer should look like. More than 5 years ago, when the return of the café racers began in the Philippines, manufacturers followed suit in providing retro inspired motorcycles where customers can enjoy the lifestyle from the showroom to the road.

This motorcycle is loaded with features that you can find in modern motorcycles such as the slipper clutch and cruise control. It is also equipped with top-shelf Brembo braking system, KYB suspension, and LED lights that come as standard. The 700CL-X Sport is neck-breaking pretty. Park nearby and see how many people ogle at the bike. Watch them walk around it, peek through the engine seemingly looking for something, spot on different points of view. hear some tongue clicks, finger flick on the tank, and a nice slap on the seat as if it's a nice arse. If you're around, get ready for a quick chitchat and brace yourself for the most common question you'll encounter riding a big bike. "Boss, ilang cc yan?"
Despite its café racer form, the clipons are slightly raised-up just so you don't bend over too much in the front, practicing those nice abs in constant contortions. The seat height is just enough for a 5'6" me to flat foot one side or tiptoe on both feet. CFMoto released two colorways, the Velocity Grey and Nebula White. The latter is more visibly eye-catching with its black and neon accents. This bike is totally easy to use daily, although the steel frame is a bit heavy, the power is adequate for both city and long distance use. Coming from Manila, this bike is a pleasure to ride utilizing its cruise control function traversing the long highway stretches. On twisty roads, the bike flicks like a sportbike. WHEEL2WHEEL little more precise. I'm a spoiled kid whenever I use bikes with buttery smooth gear shifting. This is one department that this bike can improve in the future. The suspension is a 20-click adjustable shock in the front and rear giving a more adaptable riding experience despite any road condition. Honestly, it works really well, given it's a café racer inspired bike, KYB suspension also handles well in every given corner. Engine wise, the 693cc DOHC is adequately manageable. Its character is friendly for beginner to intermediate skill levels. It has two riding modes to shift into different power outputs, complemented by the ride-by-wire throttle system. The SPORT mode allows you to ride aggressively, while ECO mode tones the power down and improves fuel efficiency. Riding at night, the LED is adaptive, meaning the brightness self-adjusts depending on the road condition. The turn signals are self canceling, which helps the rider focus more. However, there are some other improvement points found on the bike. First, steering the bike through its max angle, such as making U-turns, your thumb may get stuck in between the clipon bars and the tank. Another one is that false neutrals occur, although they did not happen that often. The way to avoid them is by use of precise clutching and double checking the bike's engine engagement through clutching. Other than that, the bike is a total pleasure, riding at your preferred pace. If you're in the market for a handsome looking, handsomely priced bike to suit your handsome lifestyle, then this is for you. You get what you pay for. The significant improvement of Chinamanufactured bikes only gets better over time. Yamaha Tracer 900 GT Yamaha puts the Sport back into Sport-Touring. Words:

nce in a while, I will come across a bike that will make me rethink if there’s truly a need for different types of motorcycles when one will already do, and one such bike is the Yamaha Tracer 900 GT. It can stitch corners nearly like a sport bike, easily cover huge distances like a sport tourer, and tackle gravel roads like an adventure tourer would. It’s a classic example of a 3-in-1 bike rolled into one very handsome package. The Tracer 900 GT got its agility from the MT-09 sport naked where it was based, but with major improvements to key areas make it appropriate for its role as a grand tourer; the swingarm was lengthened by 2 inches for increased stability, the throttle maps offer more subtle throttle response, the suspension got multiple adjustments, passenger accommodation was improved, and removable panniers are now standard. It may not be readily apparent at first glance, but the quarter fairings were revised from the last Tracer 900 we tested back in 2015. It’s now more angular and more substantial. The seat height can also be adjusted between 845mm to 860mm.
What carried over unchanged from the MT-09 was the excellent 849cc crossplane triple cylinder motor that makes the Tracer 900 GT such a fun bike to ride, especially if you ride on the pavement most of the time. As an Adventure-Sport motorcycle, the Tracer 900 GT is destined for 90 percent pavement and 10 percent on unpaved roads. Having 17-inch front and rear size wheels limit the Tracer 900 GT to hard packed gravel and dirt roads where its standard Dunlop Sportmax tires work best. If you really want a serious middleweight adventure bike, Yamaha has the excellent Tenere 700.

We took the Tracer 900 GT to our favorite adventure bike proving grounds in Lobo, Batangas and we couldn’t have chosen a better place to evaluate the bike’s on and off road performance. From Makati, we took the Skyway and SLEX going to STAR Tollway where I enjoyed the comfortable riding position and the wind protection offered by the windscreen. Speaking of which, the windscreen’s height can be adjusted easily using one hand with its clever pinch to pull up or down mechanism on the base of the windscreen. I also enjoyed using the standard cruise control to maintain a steady 100 Km/h because the Tracer 900 GT always begs you to break the speed limit. The redesigned fairings also channel hot air away from your legs more effectively than I can remember on the last Tracer 900 we tested. When we reached the twisty roads near Monte Maria in Batangas City, the Tracer 900 GT corners like an MT-09, with its wide handlebars providing plenty of leverage for attacking corners after corners. included a downshift function for the quickshifter, which only offers clutchless upshifts like on the previous Tracer 900. Like on the MT-09, the Tracer 900 GT offers 3 ride modes; A, B, and Standard. While there’s still some trace of throttle jerkiness on mode A from a closed throttle, it’s now more subtle. Mode B is best reserved for wet riding conditions because of
“The Tracer 900 GT got its agility from the MT-09 sport naked where it was based, but with major improvements to key areas to make it appropriate for its role as a grand tourer.”
its delayed throttle response. The Standard mode is what I used the entire time because it offers the best balance of the A and B riding modes. The triple brake setup (2 discs in front and 1 in rear) offers plenty of stopping power and I like that the ABS is not intrusive and calibrated to maximize front tire grip before intervening. The roads after the Malabrigo Lighthouse in Lobo, Batangas are still unpaved as of this writing and it's a mixture of severely broken down concrete slabs and hard packed gravel so I decided to turn off the traction control system just in case I needed to power out of a steep incline to maintain forward momentum, and doing so simply requires a long press on the dedicated traction control button found on the left hand switch gear. The suspension offers a compliant ride quality regardless of road conditions. The rear shock absorber has a remote adjuster knob for setting the spring preload if you want a softer or stiffer ride without the need of a
C-spanner. The only thing that annoys me with the Tracer 900 GT is its foot pegs. Their high and slightly rear set positioning works well for road riding, but feels a bit awkward when riding off-road. It somehow forces you to lean down to reach the handlebar which makes it a bit hard to steer. Then again, the Tracer 900 GT is biased for ‘Grand Touring’ rather than adventure riding. If you want to be reminded of that, just look at the standard panniers that can pack enough clothes for a week of cross country touring. And they easily detach and carry like a suitcase. After completing the Lobo loop, as we call our route exiting via San Juan in Batangas, the Tracer 900 GT passed with flying colors. So if you can’t decide between a sport naked, a sport tourer, or an adventure bike, then why not buy a Tracer 900 GT and have them all? At PhP 719,000, getting three bikes in one is truly a bargain. But don’t just take my word for it. Schedule a test ride but be prepared with your checkbook. It’s really that good.

he memories all came flooding back as soon as I felt the characteristic side-to-side rock of the 2021 BMW R18 First Edition as it fired up from rest. As I sat low in the seat and stretched out to the fairly wide handlebars, it dawned on me that I hadn’t actually ridden a genuine cruiser since the late 80’s on my buddy Serge Rheinhardt’s Yamaha XJ400 Special when we would switch bikes with my custom standard Honda CB400 Hawk. I’ve never been too keen on the boulevard cruisers, I prefer the behavior and performance of standard, sport, and superbike motorcycles, especially in my youth. As one becomes more seasoned however, the modern cruisers have become more appealing as they too continued to develop overtime integrating higher performance and safety measures to complement the relaxed aesthetics and daily ride comfort.
WHEEL2WHEEL Compared to our old “airhead” BMW Boxer in the 80’s, a brilliant 980cc 1982 R100RS café racer with custom 4-valve Krauser heads, Mahle pistons / rings, increased compression from 8.2:1 to 10.2:1, Mikuni flat slide carburetors, and a ferocious two-into-one exhaust (which raised power from 70 bhp @ 7250 rpm / 56 lb-ft @ 5500 rpm to 84 bhp @ 7380 rpm / 61 lb-ft @ 5950 rpm), mated to a 5-speed transmission (0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds with a 205 km/h top speed) and a “oil-head” 1085 cc fuel-injected 1998 R1100RS ( 90 bhp @ 7250 rpm / 69 lb-ft @ 5500 rpm, 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds with a 220 km/h top speed) mated also to a 5-speed transmission, the massive Berlin-built 1802 cc R18 First Edition cruiser is considerably more debonair and civilized. Our BMW R100RS looked like nothing else on the road in a field when very few big bikes were seen in the period. I enjoyed it even when idling at stoplights on EDSA when there was just a narrow strip dividing the main thoroughfare with hardly any traffic. It was like wrestling a small carabao that had the voice of a rabid lion. With narrow old-school Metzler tires managed by not too powerful brakes, you needed a good amount of courage to ride aggressively on open country roads but it could cruise all day comfortably while looking great thanks to the Pininfarina wind tunneldesigned fairing. The more modern R1100RS performed considerably better but it did not have the character of the older bike. The R18 engine, despite its enormous displacement, is even more muted and refined compared to the R1100RS of the 90’s. We also had a K100RS with a tunable SuperTrapp exhaust system too (88 bhp @ 8000 rpm / 63 lb-ft @ 6000 rpm, 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, with a 225 km/h top speed) which was very unique and exclusive at the time but it lacked the character of the Boxers and it would labor to keep up with the higher performance Japanese superbikes. The BMW Motorrad R18 is an immaculate and glorious representation of the classic Boxer BMW's that began back in 1923 with the R32 but with a closer design affinity with the 1950’s R

51/2 models, in my opinion. At close to 800 pounds wet, not counting the rider, the R18 can feel like a lowered pick-up truck on the road. Thankfully, there is a reverse lever on the left side after the cylinder head and above the flat foot peg to assist riders who may not have enough leg strength to maneuver the big boy when parking. Once you are done docking the buzzy little land yacht, you can spend hours enjoying every uncluttered visual detail. Much like the Boxers of the past, there is no balance shaft in the engine, which is deliberate so you can feel connected with the big bike while you effortlessly use every gear from the 6-speed transmission like a locomotive thanks to so much available torque beginning at 1650 rpm and peaks close to 3000 rpm with maximum horsepower attained at just under 4800 rpm. Yes, the powerplant feels almost like a modern turbodiesel but with a 5500 rpm redline which you certainly feel and see in a digital readout on the complex yet straightforward singular instrument cluster. I would have preferred an analog tachometer and fuel gauge though. The LED headlight is strong but I wish it was a bit proportionally larger to complement the overall iconic design. The gorgeous
spoke wheels, 19” x 3.5” in front and 16” x 5” at the rear, are wrapped with excellent Bridgestone Battlecruise H50R tires (120/70B19 60H front and 180/65B16 81H rear). With so much torque available, I was pleased that BMW Motorrad integrated multiple safety and ride enjoyment functions that are easily managed on the go from a Rain mode (with Rock and Roll additional fun ride modes) to Automatic Stability Control. The adjustable shift and brake levers are great and function as you would expect from BMW; solid engagement and effortless. It takes some time to get accustomed to the flat foot pegs, limited ground clearance, and weight at low speed. I wish the standard fitment came with a rear passenger pillion though to share the wonderful experience with a loved one, however it does look great as it stands without it. The brakes, a trio of 300 mm discs, are appropriately powerful with ABS. The R18 is your mature, relaxed, and substantial reward for a lifetime of toil. It is plenty swift when needed but it is all about the overall experience rather than attacking corners and blasting around at high speed. Every opportunity to ride it is a supreme occasion of personal reward.
Plus Beautiful details, enormously
rewarding to ride, incredible elasticity, mighty torque, bursting with character.
Rating 10/10
