Pero la ciudad aún sorprende con regiones caracterizadas por casas antiguas, mercadillos al aire libre que entorpecen el tránsito y la musiquilla de los camiones vendiendo tanques de gas. Dos de las principales novedades de la capital paulista destacan barrios cómo estos, lejos del torbellino de las áreas más centrales. En la Zona Norte se ubica el recién abierto restaurante Esquina Mocotó, de Rodrigo Oliveira. En la Zona Este, Itaquera recibe la Copa del Mundo en el Arena Corinthians. Y es posible entrar en
el espíritu de este São Paulo menos frenético, sin ir demasiado lejos. Comience con lo más simple: Vaya a una panadería y pida un pingado y un pão na chapa (pan cortado y tostado). En abril de 2014, debe de entrar en actividad el Aeropuerto Internacional São Gonçalo do Amarante, localizado en la ciudad homónima, a 40 km de la capital, que pasará a recibir la mayor parte de los vuelos para el estado. De la estación de autobuses, también hay taxis (R$ 24 hasta el Centro y R$ 32 hasta Ponta Negra) y autobuses (R$ 2,40).
