These tips will help you to save on your heating and cooling energy costs, and make your home feel more comfortable. Also, when it comes time to replace one of your units, make sure to purchase a furnace with an AFUE rating of at least 92 and a central air conditioning unit with a SEER of 14 or more.

f you want to save on your energy bill, you should check your heating and cooling system. Making adjustments and changes can save you a lot of money, and everything you do will contribute to those savings. Here are some tips so you can heat and cool your home in a more cost-efficient manner:

CHANGE YOUR THERMOSTAT Change your thermostat when you are going to be away from home. This will help you save on your heating and cooling energy costs. It can help you save as much as 10% on your yearly cost. You should change your thermostat by about 8 degrees when you will be out for more than a few minutes. Also, make sure your thermostats fan switch is set to “auto” rather than “run.”

USE WINDOW COVERINGS You can reduce your monthly heating and cooling energy costs by using blinds and drapes. Open them when the sun is shining to heat your home and draw them shut to keep it cool. Make this a part of your daily routine.

By circulating the air with a fan you will be able to make it feel cooler without the need to turn the air conditioning down so low. SEAL GAPS AND CRACKS Seal around the doors and windows with caulk and weather stripping to fill in the gaps and cracks. Easy Ways to Boost Your Fiber Intake

by Genesis Johnson

5 Maneras Fáciles Para Aumentar Su Consumo de Fibras

WINTER 2015

10

When you think of dietary fiber, chances are you think of those fiber cereals like bran flakes. Adding more fiber to your diet can be far more interesting, however, if you know what you are doing. The average adult should be eating 25-30 grams of fiber per day, but most people eat half that amount. Ensuring that you eat the right amount of dietary fiber daily is not just about easing constipation. It can also help prevent more serious illnesses like diabetes, colon cancer and even heart disease, as well as intestinal issues. How can you increase the amount of fiber you eat each day? Here are some easy ways to increase your fiber diet.

1

Add wheat germ to your meals. Wheat germ can be added to salads and soups, as well as cereals and yogurt. Try mixing wheat germ or oat bran into smoothies, as well.

2

Make green smoothies. Green vegetables are an excellent source of fiber, but you can only eat so much salad. Make high fiber smoothies with a banana or two, a scoop of yogurt or orange juice. Spinach is the best option to start out with, as it blends well with many flavors. Haga batidos verdes.

3

Eat dried fruit. These can be eaten as is, for a quick energy boost during the day or on cereal in the morning. Keep in mind that dried fruit is higher in calories than fresh, but also contains around 7 times the amount of fiber, depending on the fruit. Come frutas secas.

4

Eat more beans. Beans are a wellknown source of fiber and they can be easily included in your meals. Toss a cup of beans into a salad. They also go well in soups and can be turned into veggie burgers with the addition of an egg and some breadcrumbs. Come más habichuelas.

5

Choose whole grains. Just choosing the whole grain bread over white will not give you a big boost in fiber. Read the label to find out just how much fiber the product contains. Most products have whole grain alternatives, including tortillas, pita bread and pasta. Ensure that you have enough fiber in your diet by using these tips. They may be small changes, but over time, they could mean the difference between health and being ill.

WINTER 2015

n addition to surgical excisions of melanoma - the deadliest form of skin cancer - and other skin cancers, tumors, lesions and benign moles, Associates in Dermatology treats patients of all ages, and a number of skin conditions including allergic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, eczema and diseases of the hair and nails. Various locations also perform cosmetic services such as Botox®, fillers and laser rejuvenating treatments. For years, Associates in Dermatology has been involved in numerous community outreach programs, including free skin cancer screening during the month of May. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US: 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. For instance, melanoma incidence among Hispanics has risen nearly 20% since 1994, and they have significantly poorer survival rates than non-Hispanic patients, primarily because they tend to be diagnosed with the condition at a later stage. These disturbing statistics clearly underscore the urgency for year-round sun protection, regular skin self-examinations and annual visits to a dermatologist. This advice goes for everyone, no matter your 12 ethnicity or skin tone. Now, the dermatology practice reaches out to hairstylists and colorists while introducing the “Heads Up” Campaign, a free educational program from the Skin Cancer Foundation designed to provide useful

and potentially life-saving information on how to detect skin cancer on the scalp and neck on their clients. People are twice as likely to die from the disease as those with melanomas on other areas of the body. Associates in Dermatology accepts most health plans including Humana HMO Premier, one of the newest products from healthcare.gov. Call today at 800-827-SKIN (7546) to schedule your appointment.

How to Look More Beautiful and Vibrant For the Holidays Naturally

W

WINTER 2015

e all want to look more vibrant for the holidays, and some of us will decide to get Botox or fillers. But, you should know that there are some herbs that will help you get the same results. It might take a little longer for the results to appear but it will last a lot longer. There are some wonderful herbs and foods that will help to plump up our skin, diminish lines or just give us a healthy look. If you still want to do the Botox, go ahead and just take these too, and your results will last a lot longer. It will benefit your body from the inside out. So, let’s get started: 1. Astragalus Root This wonderful herb lifts and tightens the skin. I would recommend this root if your neck is getting a little loose or if your eyelids are starting to sag. This herb can be taken in capsule or in its raw form from any Chinese market. If you purchase it raw, please rinse off the sulphites that it is preserved in. You can make it into a tea or throw it in a pot of chicken soup. It also helps to build up your immune system so you can stay healthy. 2. Chinese Red Dates These help to nourish the skin and give it a nice glow while at the same time it also helps to calm your spirit so you will feel calm and beautiful during this stressful time. It can be bought dried in any Chinese market, and it is called Da Zao. You can chop it up and put it in a nice cup of tea or even into your oats in the morning. Again, if you purchase the red dates at the Chinese store, rinse off the sulphites before you eat. These dates do have a seed, so please don’t break a tooth.

3. Chinese Ginseng It is considered the wrinkle cure in China because this wonderful herb has the ability to tonify the body and at the same time to plump up your lines and make you feel younger. It will also give you some energy so you can do all the things you have to accomplish before all the relatives arrive. The Herb Shop 112 Broadway (Historic Downtown Kissimmee) Kissimmee, FL 34741. Cómo Lucir Más Bella y Vibrante Naturalmente Para Los Días Feriados

T

Entones, vamos a comenzar: 1.

The Herb Shop 112 Broadway (Historic Downtown Kissimmee) Kissimmee, FL 34741. e New Law that Could Cost You will remain protected in the event that you begin experiencing pain later on. Finally, if you are injured in an accident caused by another driver’s negligence, you should immediately contact an attorney that can advise you on your rights regarding compensation for your injuries.

Las Lesiones Corporales:

D

25 WINTER 2015

A

ccording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a car accident occurs every 10 seconds in the United States. There are important things to keep in mind in the event that one day you or a loved one has the misfortune of being involved in an auto accident. As of January 1, 2014, a new law came into effect in Florida which dictates that medical treatment must be sought within 14 days of an auto accident in order for one to retain their Personal Injury Protection benefits. In the most serious of accidents, medical attention will typically be sought immediately as more severe injuries will be apparent and require prompt attention and treatment. However, in less extreme collisions, an injured party may not even feel their injuries right away. In these types of accidents, it is quite common that at the moment of the accident a person involved in the collision does not feel that they have been injured. They may see no bruising, no marks, and feel no severe pain in the moments immediately following the impact. They may feel in shock, scared and concerned about the damage, or even angry at the situation, and perhaps experiencing an adrenaline rush which may mask any pain or symptoms of injury. Days later, however, after the shock wears off and they begin to return to their normal lives, they may begin experiencing the effects of the collision. They may begin to feel pain, soreness and/or stiffness. In some cases, they may seek medical care at this point, but others may simply decide to “wait it out” and see if the symptoms go away on their own or with pain medication. In the latter scenario, the person will risk losing benefits necessary to treat the underlying injuries under the new law. Once those benefits are lost, an injured person will have to choose between incurring potentially astronomical medical bills for treatment, or simply continue suffering through pain of untreated injuries. For these reasons, if you or someone you know is involved in an auto accident, it is imperative that medical attention be immediately sought, even if no symptoms are instantly noticeable. By doing so, you

ou’ve probably heard that eating seafood rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids can help protect against heart disease while delivering other important nutrients. In fact, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends eating seafood twice a week for such benefits. Salmon is one fish long-heralded for its nutritional value, and Alaska canned salmon offers a convenient way to add more deliciously nourishing seafood to your diet. Whether your tastes lean toward a traditional croquette drizzled with a light dill sauce, or a refreshing take on a pesto pasta salad, canned salmon is easy to prepare and surprisingly versatile. Because canned and pouched salmon is shelf-stable, you can always have some on hand for a quick, tasty meal or flavorful snack. At the grocery store, simply look for “Alaska” on the lid or label to ensure a topquality, wholly natural product with nothing added but a pinch of salt for flavor. These recipes showcase how Alaska canned salmon can be adapted to a wide range of meals and lifestyles, from the indulgent to the über-healthy. For additional preparation tips and recipes, visit www.wildalaskaseafood.com.

The Many Benefits of Salmon • Alaska canned pink salmon has four times the omega-3s EPA and DHA, and 12 times the vitamin D as many popular canned meats and fish. It also has 25 percent of adults’ Recommended Daily Allowance for calcium and nearly meets the daily reference amount for selenium. • Traditional pack canned salmon contains skin and delicate, edible bones that are rich in calcium and magnesium. Pressure-cooked in the can, they are so soft they can be easily blended into the salmon, adding extra nutrients and flavor. Skinless, boneless Alaska salmon is also available in cans and pouches. • Pink salmon — the variety commonly found in cans — has a light color and mild flavor, while red salmon (or sockeye) has a richer, more intense flavor and color. 100% of TFA Graduates Have Been Accepted to College The First Academy boasts a 100% college acceptance rate for its graduating seniors, who have received over $41 million in scholarship offers. TFA students at every grade level consistently score well above the state and national average on standardized tests and, for nearly a decade, more than half of TFA seventh grade students have qualified for the Duke University Talent Identification Program for the academically accomplished. The First Academy’s Lower School division serves students in K4 (4 years old as of September 1st), Transitional Kindergarten (TK – 5 years old as of September 1st) and (5 years old as of September 1st) Kindergarten through sixth grade.

One of the core educational beliefs of The First Academy is that all students can learn and succeed in a loving environment where expectations are high. Teachers at The First Academy understand that children are unique and do not all share the same learning style. Teachers take time to learn the unique strengths and weaknesses of every student and strive to provide a wide array of educational methods to implement instruction. The school strives to provide a consistently challenging curriculum to benefit all learners within the classroom setting. Each grade-level team works together to identify individual student needs and abilities, then develops strategies to address those needs effectively. The Middle School is composed of grades 7 and 8. Students develop a strong self-worth, purpose, security, and acceptance. The Middle School offers an emotional safe haven for growth and maturity, focusing on character before career and service before self. The focus of the Upper School is to prepare students for the academic rigor and pressures of college. Students will adjust between college preparatory, honors, and Advance Placement schedules to sustain a personally appropriate challenge. The Arts and Athletics are at a fundamental point in each student’s academic career.

The First Academy is accredited by: Florida Council of Independent Schools, Southern Association of Independent Schools, Advanced Southern Association of Colleges & Schools, Council on Educational Standards & Accountability, and the Association of Christian Schools International. Dr. Steve Whitaker is the Head of School at The First Academy and Dr. Shayne Grove is the Director of Admissions. The First Academy is a ChristCentered K4 – Grade 12 College Preparatory School, and does not discriminate on the basis of color, race, gender or ethnic origin. It is located at 2667 Bruton Boulevard, Orlando, FL 32805. To schedule your personal tour, call 407-206-8602 or e-mail: admissions@thefirstacademy.org. Definitively Christ-Centered, Distinctly College-Prep The First Academy is a Christ-centered, college-preparatory school serving over 1,200 Central Florida students who attend in grades K4 through grade 12. Since its opening in 1987, TFA has continued to grow the academic, fine arts, and athletic programs that have elevated its students to the highest levels of achievement. More importantly, though, as a private school TFA has helped develop its students’ strength of character, leading young men and women to serve others in their own community and across the globe.
