he Tutoring Center, located in the Dr. Phillips area, provides oneto-one tutoring to students from kindergarten to grade 12, in Math, Reading, Writing, Algebra and Geometry, including preparation for SAT/ACT tests For the past six months, The Tutoring Center has been making a difference in the lives of students, creating an exceptional learning experience that will endure for many years. The Tutoring Center, offers a unique service to the community by preparing students to excel in their academic studies. Parents are proud of their children for achieving academic success through the tutoring service offered by The
Tutoring Center. At The Tutoring Center, students develop stronger academic skills; have better concentration, focus and attention span; have more confidence and motivation; and have a stronger testtaking and study skills. The Tutoring Center offers a free diagnostic assessment to accurately determine the child’s strengths and weaknesses, and the skills needed for improvement. A personalized program is then developed to give the child the best tutoring possible. All the instructors are trained and certified in The Tutoring Center’s system of Individualized Direct Instruction™ and The Rotational Approach to

Learning™ which facilitates the learning process. This innovative system divides the one-hour tutoring session into three parts: one half hour on the subject the student needs help, and two 15-minute sessions in different locations with different sets of materials. This maximizes academic performance and concentration in a positive, fun, and caring environment. Children learn best when they enjoy learning. Zohra Savja, Director of The Tutoring Center, is passionate about educating children. A former Orange County Public School substitute teacher for children in elementary schools, Savja has a Bachelor of Science degree. But educa-

Dr. Phillips Charities
5
by Wendy Joy Oliver
Past, Present and Future L
ong synonymous with Central Florida, the Dr. Phillips name has had a philanthropic and economic presence in the community since the turn of the 20th century. Once considered the largest citrus producer in the world, the Dr. Phillips companies share a rich history spanning several generations, culminating in the establishment of two distinct funding organizations, The Dr. P. Phillips Foundation and Dr. Phillips, Inc. Perhaps best known for their support of Central Florida community programs through specialized grant funding, the organizations are known as Dr. Phillips Charities. The planned development of the Dr. Phillips Community came about as a direct result of initiatives taken by Dr. Phillips. In the early 1950s, the concept of zon-
ing or long-range land planning was almost non-existent in Central Florida. It was during this timeframe that Dr. Phillips initiated the creation of a “master plan” for the community of Dr. Phillips. His vision was for a first-class, full-service community where residents could live, work and play. To plan for the orderly development of the community, Dr. Phillips hired a “land-use planner” from Jacksonville, Florida named George Simmons. Together with Dr. Phillip’s son, Howard, their collaboration resulted in the “Simmons” plan allowing for approximately 5,000 residents, and designating areas for commercial, industrial and residential use. At the time of its creation, the Dr. Phillips Community plan was progressive and innovative. In 1960, the first contract
signed under the “Simmons” plan was the Bay Hill community, which featured spacious residential lots and an adjoining championship golf course. Former Dr. Phillips Charities President and Chairman, Jim Hinson worked with Howard Phillips to develop land left over from the Phillips family’s citrus grove sale to Granada Groves, a partnership between Minute Maid and Investors Diversified Services. Bay Hill resulted from turning that remaining Phillips-owned 648 acres in southwest Orange County into the first real estate development in the area and represented everything that supported the standards of the new Dr. Phillips Community, attracting family residences by restricting homebuilders to a “density” of no more than two homes per acre.
Dr. Phillips Charities has awarded over $160,000,000 in grants, pledges, pledge payments and funding which support our community and touch the lives of children and families in Central Florida. To continue this great legacy of service, Dr. Phillips, Inc. announced its Spring Lake Heath and Living Campus that will create a senior housing and healthcare community on 26 acres in the heart of the Dr. Phillips neighborhood in southwest Orange County. Dr. Phillips, Inc. chose two industry leaders for this $75,000,000 project – Harbor Retirement Associates (HRA) and Orlando Health. Dr. Phillips Charities President, Ken Robinson commented, “By creating the Spring Lake

A Holistic Approach to Treating ADHD
D
o you wonder if you or someone in your family may have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)? If so, it is important to get a proper diagnosis. There is no objective test (like a blood or urine test) to determine if someone has ADHD. The diagnostic criteria for ADHD overlaps with other conditions such as Anxiety, Learning Disabilities, BiPolar Disorder, and many others. Therefore, it is important to get evaluated by a licensed psychologist in order to get an accurate diagnosis. As with most medical conditions, diet plays an important role with ADHD. Many times a diet with lots of refined sugar, food colorings, preservatives, and other additives can be an

exasperator of the inappropriate behavior. Avoid all food additives, and be sure to add foods rich in essential fatty acids such as salmon, walnuts, and avocados. Protein should be included in every meal for someone with ADHD. This can come in the form of meat, eggs, nuts, legumes, or yogurt. A person with ADHD symptoms should be sure to consume foods high in B vitamins such as brown rice and green leafy vegetables to help reduce stress. Tryptophan is a natural chemical that helps increase serotonin which encourages a sense of calm. Foods rich in tryptophan include yogurt, poultry, soy products, and whole grains. It is important to identify and eliminate any environ-
mental toxins or food allergies that may be causing or increasing ADHD symptoms. Even over exposure to hyper stimulating media such as intense video games can be part of the problem. A behavioral therapist can assist with a parenting plan that can make the difference between success and failure. John Stiteler, MA, LCCT is the owner of Total Health Guidance, an integrated healthcare center that provides assessment, counseling, nutrition, and other holistic approaches to ADHD. They can be reached at 321-332-6984 or at www.TotalHealthGuid ance.com.
