Pokémon: Back From the Past by Shannon Gallagher

A

worldwide phenomenon recently has been brought back to life; its name is Pokémon. Pokémon is not new. It was created in 1995 by Satoshi Tajiri in Japan. It was built on fantasy characters known as Pokémon. Pokémon trainers catch these creatures and train them for battle. The franchise developed animated television shows and movies, card games, comic books, toys, and video games. Pokémon began with collector’s cards that you could use to battle or trade with your friends. It later led to the wellknown video games known best by color: Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow. Pokémon was first made available on the Nintendo Game Boy system in 1996. Today, the famous Pokémon GO app has created a mobilized version of the traditional

Pokémon game. Users can walk freely throughout their hometowns finding and catching these creatures on their mobile devices. It has created a worldwide craze, bringing major nostalgia to 90s kids. Businesses have taken advantage of the latest obsession by turning their establishments into Pokémon “gyms” or a PokeStop. A gym is a place where users can train their Pokémon creatures and prepare them for battle. Gyms are essential to Pokémon GO users as it strengthens their Pokémon, and they are always looking for one. A PokeStop is a way for users to collect more Pokeballs, and items. Turning your place of business into a Pokémon GO Gym or PokeStop is simple, especially since users can do it for you or you can visit www.Poke mongo.com and submit a re-

arly mornings, new extracurricular activities and a lot of homework back to school is a big transition for kids. With the focus on children’s success, there’s one family member who always sacrifices her well-being to ensure days run smoothly: Mom. “She lays in bed at night planning the next day. She gets up earlier than the kids to prepare meals. She selflessly packs her schedule to meet family obligations,” says Shannon Wright, Master of Science in Nutritional Sciences and wellness expert for Natrol. Wright says that this do-itall attitude is admirable, but the effects mean moms are losing the important sleep they need to feel their best and stay healthy. “Adults need seven to

nine hours of sleep each night that includes all sleep stages in order to feel well rested,” Wright says. “One out of three Americans don’t get enough sleep, and women are two times more likely to have difficulty falling and staying asleep.” A good night’s rest includes four different sleep stages with 90-minute phases of alternating nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. To help moms everywhere reach all stages and sleep better during the hectic back-to-school season and all year long, Wright recommends following these tips: • Adopt a sleep routine. A consistent sleep-wake schedule isn’t just good for your kids, it’s good for you, too. This supports your

body’s natural circadian rhythms that occur with the day-night transition. This also supports the release of melatonin, the body’s naturally produced hormone that signals the body to sleep soundly. • Create a sleep oasis. The bedroom environment should be conducive to sleep and that goes beyond the bed. A cool, dark, noise-free bedroom helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer. If you have noise or light challenges, consider blackout shades, face masks, and ear plugs. • Avoid late evening screen time. The kids are finally in bed and moms have a few moments to themselves. Catching up on e-mail, watching TV shows and perusing your smartphone can kill sleep poten-

tial if you do it within an hour of bedtime. Essentially, the LED lights make your brain believe it is day, and therefore prohibit melatonin release. • Exercise daily. There is a lot of research that connects quality sleep to exercise, so even if you’re tired, try to move your body every day. Walk the field perimeter at the kids’ soccer practice, join the kids on the playground or watch that yoga DVD to start your morning with a good stretch. • Be proactive about tomorrow. Enjoy a smoother morning and fewer worries while you’re lying in bed by

Try Natrol, a 100% drug-free melatonin supplement that is non-habit forming. The fast-dissolve tablets help moms fall asleep faster, stay asleep, and wake up refreshed to tackle another busy day. “These tips may be simple, but they are extremely effective. Remember, with a good night’s rest it’s a lot easier to be Super Mom,” Wright says.

getting things done the night before. For example, make lunches, pack backpacks, shower and lay out clothes for the next day in the evening. You’ll have fewer things to do in the morning, and you can sleep in a little later. Take sleep-supportive supplements. Stress, along with other things like age, diet and lifestyle can affect our bodies’ production of melatonin. Taking a melatonin supplement can help.

5 tips for dealing with the Recent traumatic Events by John Stiteler

M

any people are experiencing reactions that are out of the ordinary for them as a result of the recent traumas. Some of the more common reactions include: anxiety, withdrawal, grief, guilt, nightmares, intrusive images, fear, depression, change in appetite, or sleep disturbances. Here are five tips to help manage the stress: 1. Talk about it. By talking with others, you can relieve stress and realize that others share your feelings. 2. Take care of yourself. Rest, exercise, and eat properly. If you smoke or drink coffee, try to limit your intake since nicotine and caffeine can exasperate stress. 3. Find time for activities you enjoy. Read a book, go for a walk, or do something else

you enjoy. These healthy activities can get your mind off the disaster and keep stress in check. 4. Avoid drugs and excessive drinking. Drugs and alcohol may temporarily seem to remove stress, but in the long run they will only make it worse. 5. Ask for help when you need it. If your feelings do not go away or are so intense that they interfere with your ability to

function in daily life – seek help from a counselor. You could also join a support group. Don’t try to cope alone. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. The Mental Health Association of Central Florida is now offering free counseling for anyone impacted in any way as a result of the recent tragedies in our community. If you or someone you know are having difficulty managing, please contact 407-8980110 to schedule a free appointment.

The Hustle & Bustle of Back to School

Enrollment Projection for 2016-2017 202,670 - Includes the projected increase of an estimated 5,000 students for 2016-17.

t’s that time of the year again. Summer is coming to an end. The pressure is on for both parents and children to get ready to go back to school. The school supplies are flying off the shelves, parents are rushing to get back into a routine, and kids are anxiously awaiting that first day of school. Through all of the hustle and bustle, it is important for parents to know how they can help their kids do better in school. Consider the following tips: Maintain a positive relationship. Keeping a positive relationship with your children is crucial to a successful school year. Be on their side and motivate them throughout

the entire year. Do not shut down over breaks. Christmas and summer vacation are tough times to keep the mind active. Keep your children busy and learning without them realizing it by taking them to museums, educational events, and galleries. Find a study area. Designate an area to study. This will help to keep play time and studying separate. Establish a relationship with the teacher. Keeping tabs on the kids can be difficult. A good relationship with their teacher will help to avoid any dilemmas throughout the year,

and will prevent any barriers between parents and teachers. Find a tutor if necessary. If your child is struggling, sometimes a tutor is necessary. Whether you find extra help through the school or a tutoring center, it will benefit both you and your child. The start of a new school year can be bumpy, but these tips will help you and your child have a smooth ride throughout the year.

pet boarding can be Fun Courtesy V.I.Pet Resort

S

o, you’re going on vacation or traveling on business. What about your much-loved, four-legged family member? What will he do while you’re gone? Maybe he could go on vacation too. Pet boarding can actually be fun for your pet if you take some easy steps to prepare him for his stay. Here are some tips for helping to reduce the stress on both of you: • Be sure your pet is updated on his vaccinations. Find out the requirements of the facility before you check in. Most boarding facilities have wait times for vaccinations. You don’t want to be surprised on the day of your departure that you don’t have the proper paperwork. • Find out the feeding, walking and exercise schedule of the pet boarding facility you have chosen. Try and follow their routine for a few days before your pet’s stay.

• Bring a special toy or blanket from home to make your pet feel more comfortable while he’s away. • Visit the boarding facility. Make sure the facility is clean and the accommodations are comfortable for your pet. • If you can’t visit the boarding facility because you live out of town, call the facility and talk with a staff member. Ask questions about the layout, routine and operation of the facility so you can feel more comfortable about leaving your pet. If you are from out of town and traveling with your pet by car, be sure to put your pet in a crate and make him comfortable and safe for the trip. • If your pet has never been boarded before, and you live near the pet boarding facility you are using, you could plan an overnight trial visit to the facility to get your pet used to the idea of being away from you. eing a caregiver and companion to an elderly person requires a special person who is compassionate and dedicated. Debra McFayden and her adult daughter, Lesley Booth, are both characterized by their compassion and dedication as providers of companion service through Always First Companion Service. They also help in meal planning and preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, and medication reminders. If necessary, they will provide Sitter Services in hospitals, reha-
