SURE SIGNS

IT’S TIME TO Downsize by Amanda Gia

The nest is empty, and all is quiet. The pitter-patter of little feet has turned into the sound of creeks in hollow halls, and that’s when you’re at home. Most of the time, you are not home because if you are not on a cruise, you are on a flight to visit friends and family across the miles. So, how do you know when it is time to downsize your family home and start a new chapter in your “home ownership?” The following are five signs that it’s time to downsize you current home.

1

Home repairs and maintenance are eating up your budget. If you have to make a choice between getting a new water heater installed and buying groceries and prescriptions, it’s time to downsize.

2

If you only live in 25% of your home, it’s a good indication that it’s time to downsize. Let's do the math: 5 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, a kitchen, a great room, a dining room, and a living room all equal about 13 rooms, right? You live in your bedroom,

kitchen, and one bathroom. That’s only 25% of your home. But, what about when there are visitors or holiday dinners? The addition of those seasonal occurrences still only uses 40% of your home. It is time to downsize to a more manageable space to avoid the dust in the other unused 75% of your home, precipitating sneezes in your well lived-in 25%.

3

And speaking of well lived-in, are those rooms well lived in or have you rightfully taken

advantage of the free time you have to travel and be adventurous? Maybe you could travel more if your home expense budget, including your mortgage, was not such a large part of your monthly expenses. If you have paid off your home, you are in an even more desirable situation to downsize because you could sell your home and purchase both a new home or condo and a vacation home. Wouldn’t that be fun?

4

Aside from the monetary concerns of maintenance, let’s look at the time commitment to the upkeep of your home. Many maintenance-free communities exist for people just like you who are on the go and want to spend time putting on the green, not mowing one.

5

Thinking back to the percentage of the home in which you dwell, how is your real estate tax calculated? Is it calculated based on 25% of your home or 100%? You see for

yourself that it would behoove you to downsize if your personal property taxes owed don't reflect the actual space you are using. It is a real eye-opener when you assess whether to downsize your home or not. It may seem like a difficult decision because of the investment you have made in your current property. Yet, you will not lose that investment. You will actually gain a quality of life that you deserve with more time, more money, and more adventure.

FAAE 2015 Leadership Awards OCPS School Board

T

he Florida Alliance for Arts Education recognizes leaders who work in various capacities to ensure that arts education is available in all Florida schools and communities and that arts education is of the highest quality. Leadership in the areas of education, administration, and community are recognized. The 2105 FAAE Leadership Award recipients were honored at the annual awards reception on June 12, at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Orlando. The Orange County Public Schools School Board was selected for the 2015 Florida Alliance for Arts Education School Board Leadership Award by a statewide panel of experts. This award recognizes an outstanding Florida school board for its

exemplary support of highquality arts education through its policies and practices within its district. Dr. Mary Palmer, FAAE Founder and Arts Advocate, presented the award. She applauded the Orange County School Board and shared some of the Board’s accomplishments: The Orange County School Board ensures that all students in Orange County Public Schools will have access to high quality arts education, including equitable access for students across all socioeconomic classifications. Even during a challenging economy, this School Board maintained its commitment to arts education by strenuously campaigning for a one-mill increase on property taxes. This special tax, specifically earmarked to

protect arts programs, was overwhelmingly passed by voters in 2010 and again in 2014. During the past 6 years, OCPS has increased the number of arts educators annually and now boasts over 600 arts educators. Under the guidance and support of the School board, 66.9% of OCPS students, over 130,000, are now enrolled in visual and performing arts courses. For over 20 years, the school board has supported a program where every 2nd grader attends the Ballet and every 3rd, 4th, and 5th grader attends a concert with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. In addtion, all schools in Orange County have access to the Journeys Into Arts and Culture program which provides transportation and entrance fees to

tively, the members of the Orange County School Board have demonstrated an unwavering and highly successful commitment to

providing students with the social, emotional, and academic benefits of high quality arts education.

ABOUT THE FLORIDA ALLIANCE FOR ARTS EDUCATION Since 1981, Florida Alliance for Arts Education (FAAE) has united educators, artists, community leaders, concerned citizens, arts education organizations, arts institutions and corporate partners to ensure Florida’s students a complete education that includes the arts. This is expected to be accomplished in four years. Risen Savior Academy is located adjacent to Risen Savior Lutheran Church in East Orlando. For Pastor Steven Blumer, who has been a Lutheran pastor for over 30 years, Risen Savior Academy is the culmination of many years of planning, perseverance and prayers. Risen Savior Academy aspires to offer excellence in Christ-centered education with caring, well-trained teachers. Through a challenging curriculum and modern technologies, students will be inspired to

excel in a loving and safe Christian environment where Jesus and His Word will provide guidance to all. The current staff is: Ron Brutlag, principal of Risen Savior Academy; Jennifer Laudano, Kindergarten/ Elementary teacher; and Robin Dunton, administrative assistant. Pastor Blumer served in El Paso, Texas and Beaver Dam, Wisconsin before moving to Orlando to start Risen Savior Lutheran Church in 1998. His wife, Bonnie, is a Christian teacher. Pastor Blumer is the author of Searching for Light In a World of Darkness, a book that answers many questions concerning the Christian faith. On average, students attending WELS schools annually outperform their peers by a considerable margin on national achievement tests. Risen Savior Academy intends to continue this rich tradition of academic excellence in Orlando.
