Controlling Health Care Costs in Retirement

H

ealth care becomes a bigger concern as we grow older. Ailments are likely to develop, which means more money spent to visit health professionals and buy medication. The costs of preventative care and preparing for unexpected health situations are rising. Health-related expenses will likely be one of the biggest components of your retirement budget. You need to be prepared to pay for comprehensive insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs for care. Here are three strategies to help you manage this critical expense in retirement. Understand how Medicare works. Americans age 65 and older qualify for Medicare. Most people automatically qualify for Medicare Part A at no cost, which provides

coverage for hospital stays and nursing care. Medicare Part B must be purchased (approximately $109 per month in 2017 for most retirees). Part B covers the costs of visiting a physician, but with some deductibles. Many people purchase additional coverage to use for out-ofpocket expenses, such as a Part D prescription drug plan or a Medicare Supplement policy. Signing up when you first qualify for coverage will keep costs at the lowest level. If you maintain insurance through your employer after turning 65, you can delay Medicare enrollment without risking late penalties. If you retire before 65, you will need to purchase insurance to cover healthrelated expenses until you become eligible for Medicare. Individual coverage gets more expensive

as you grow older, so work the cost into your retirement budget. Some employers offer retiree health insurance as a benefit. Check with your human resources department to see if this option is available to you. Allocate sufficient funds for health care costs. As you develop your retirement income strategy, make sure you have money set aside for health expenses that will be your responsibility. The average 66-year-old couple will need to use more than half of their lifetime pre-tax Social Security benefits to pay for health care expenses throughout retirement1. Most people will rely on their own savings to help offset some medical expenses. You may want to establish a health savings account (HSA) during your

working years. HSAs are designed to help build taxadvantaged savings to pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses you incur during your working years. Any leftover funds can be applied to health expenses later in life, including premiums for Medicare and long-term care insurance. You must be enrolled in a high deductible health plan to open an HSA. Focus on your own health. One way to keep health care costs under control in retirement is to create or maintain a healthy lifestyle. Small changes you make today, such as eating right or prioritizing sleep, could reduce the likelihood that medical issues will impact you later in life. Being physically active may also benefit your finances in retirement. According to the

2014/11/01/retire-health-caremedical-expenses/18186541/).

American Heart Association, it could help you save $500 a year today on health-related expenses2. Having a plan doesn’t guarantee that you will avoid heath issues, but you may find comfort in knowing how you can tackle health care costs in retirement. 1

6 REAL ESTATE Ownership of Real Estate Assets I t is well-known that in Florida, a great way to own your home is in your individual name so that the home can qualify for homestead protection. However, homestead laws extend only to your principal residence. What happens if you want to purchase a beach condo, an office building, or a piece of land? How you title this property can have a significant effect on your business and your other assets. Generally, titling each piece of real property in a separate limited liability com-

pany (LLC) owned by a revocable trust is one of the most effective ways of ownership with a number of business and estate planning advantages:

1. Asset Protection. Because there is an inherent risk of liability that goes along with property ownership, you, as a property owner, could potentially be subject to tort claims stemming from activities that occur on the property. If the property is held in your individual name at the time a tort claim, all of your personal assets are at risk in the litigation. How-

ever, if the property is held in an LLC, generally, only this property can be used to satisfy the judgment.

2. Estate Planning. Having each piece of real property in a separate LLC makes it simple and cost effective to transfer ownership to family members. Rather than filing a new deed, the owners can transfer ownership of the property to family members by simply issuing them membership interests in the LLC. Further, the LLC could also be structured to allow the owner to preserve control over the property during his or her lifetime and, at the same time, move some of the value of the property out of his or her estate, by gifting only the nonvoting units to family members.

3. Avoidance of Probate. Owning real property through an LLC that is in turn owned by a revocable trust enables one to avoid the difficult probate process with respect to that property, which in turn eases the administration of your es-

tate in the event of your passing. While the Florida LLC is an effective and frequently used vehicle for holding real property, there are other options that may be more appropriate for prop-

erty owners. The specific circumstances and goals of the property owner must be evaluated before making this decision. Julia Dennis is with Shuffield, Lowman & Wilson, P.A. in Orlando, FL.

Oath of Office Ceremony for Orange County District 1, 3 and 5

M

ore than 400 citizens gathered at the Orange County Convention Center on Dec. 6 for the Orange County Oath of Office Ceremony. Orange County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey and District 5 Commissioner Emily Bonilla were sworn in for their first terms, while District 3 Commissioner Pete Clarke was sworn in for his second term. Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, Orange

County District 2 Commissioner Bryan Nelson, former District 1 Commissioner S. Scott Boyd and former Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty were among the many who attended the ceremony to welcome the newly elected commissioners. Mayor Jacobs provided the ceremony’s closing remarks and reflected on the importance of public service, decision-making and the critical relationship be-

tween elected officials and the community. “As we prepare for a new commission and a new year, as we embark on new partnerships for everything from transportation to housing to job creation, one thing that is not new, one partnership that is invaluable is the partnership that we have with our citizens,” Mayor Jacobs said. “Working together with the entire Board, with our local government agencies, and

each of you, we will continue to build an Orange County in which all may flourish.” Commissioner VanderLey was sworn in by Chief Judge C. Alan Lawson of the Fifth District Court of Appeal. Commissioner Clarke was sworn in by Circuit Judge Wilfredo Martinez of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court, and Commissioner Bonilla was sworn in by Circuit Judge Tina Caraballo of the Ninth

Judicial Circuit Court. The seven elected members, including Mayor Jacobs, serve four-year

terms on the Orange County Board of County Commissioners. District 1, 3 and 5 commissioners are elected in presidential election years. Elections for Orange County Mayor and District 2, 4 and 6 commissioner seats will be held in 2018.
