The Importance of Skin Cancer Awareness
S
kin cancer rates are skyrocketing, both in the U.S., where more than 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed annually, and around the world. In fact, one in five Americans is diagnosed with skin cancer at some point in their lives. It is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. with more new cases than the combined incidence of can-
cers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Skin cancer is a malignant condition that begins with the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Recent studies show it can result as an accumulative effect from sun damage (90% in the case of nonmelanoma skin cancers). Florida’s near year-round high temperatures means
we are all at a higher risk. In the past two decades alone, melanoma incidence among Hispanic Americans has even risen nearly 20 percent – a disconcerting statistic particularly considering that melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Research shows that an erroneous perception that those with darker skin
are at a lesser risk than others for skin cancer may be to blame. What are the different types of skin cancer? • Melanoma is the most deadly of all skin cancers (It causes more than 75% of skin cancer deaths). One American dies of melanoma almost every hour. • Basal Cell Carcinoma

(BCC) is the most frequently occurring skin cancer. Though they are generally easily treated, BCCs tend to keep growing if untreated, and in rare cases can start to spread. • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is the second most frequently occurring skin cancer. An estimated 65% of them arise in lesions previously diagnosed as AKs. Most are easily treated, but if not removed, some can metastasize and spread to distant tissues and organs, becoming life threatening. • Actinic Keratosis (AKs) are pre-cancers that can turn into SCC if left untreated. They are often an early stage in the development of skin cancer. Early detection of skin cancer is key. Cure rates are high, and recurrence
rates are low for cancers that are caught and treated early. It is important to check for changes in size, shape and color of pigmented areas. The Skin Cancer foundation highly recommends an annual fullbody skin exam by a dermatologist. And remember, May is skin cancer awareness month. ive construction projects are kicking off in Orange County Public Schools as part of a major building boom that includes 22 schools. “Thank you to the taxpayers of Orange County for supporting the half-penny sales tax. That makes all this new construction possible,” said Superintendent Barbara Jenkins. The projects, which will open in August 2017, are: • Site 131-PS8-SW-5 (Downtown Orlando/Parramore), a preschool to eighth-grade campus, will include a preschool wing supported by the Harris Rosen Foundation, a branch of the Boys & Girls Club and access to community services. • Site 27-H-W-4, a new high school to serve growth in West Windermere and Horizon West area. • Site 52-M-SE-2, a new
prototype middle school being built in the booming Lake Nona area. • Site 21-M-E-2, a new prototype middle school to relieve the Avalon/Timber Springs area. • Carver Middle School, which is being rebuilt as a 1,215-student prototype on an existing site. In addition, nine elementary schools will begin construction later this year to open in 2017. They are Cypress Park, Engelwood, Oak Hill, Rock Lake, Mollie Ray, Ivey Lane and Meadow Woods, as well as relief schools on the site of MetroWest Elementary and in Lake Nona (Site 44-ESE-2). “In Orange County, we have one of the most aggressive, forward-looking school construction programs in the nation,” said Chief Facilities Officer John Morris. “These new facilities
will allow OCPS to continue to provide the best possible learning environment for our nearly 200,000 students.” This year, OCPS is opening eight schools: Site 81-ESW-5 (new elementary in the Millenia Gardens area), Site 117-E-SW-4 (new elementary in Lakeside Village, Horizon West), Site 2-K8-E1 (new K-8 in Wedgefield), plus comprehensive renovations of Lockhart, Riverside and Dream Lake Elementary, and replacements of Tangelo Park and Ventura Elementary. The 2016 and 2017 schools, the largest project load in recent history, will cost $603.8 million and create nearly 19,000 jobs. Four Important Summer Camp Qualities A
s this time of year approaches, kids start staring at the clock, counting down the minutes until the last day of school. But as a parent, you are likely not wishing this time away so quickly, especially if you have not finalized any day care or day camp plans. The number of summer day camp options can leave any parent feeling overwhelmed. And there’s more to consider than just sing-alongs and friendship bracelets. The best camps provide your kids with lifelong memories and the skills they need to be successful. So, how do you find the best fit for your child? Erin Cox, senior manager for Life Time Fitness Kids Programming, shares four things you need to consider before signing your child up for a summer camp: 1. A history and well-
trained staff. It's important to send your kids to a camp run by an organization you trust. There is something to be said about a camp that’s been in operation for several years, and a welltrained staff definitely has something to do with it. The staff should be background checked and certified to take care of children on a daily basis. Before you sign up, ask about safety standards and what the camp’s protocols are for camperstaff interactions. 2. A mix of activities. Whether it’s a camp with a theme or a general kids’ day camp, kids do well when presented with a variety of options when it comes to activities. From arts and crafts to field trips, sports, swimming and games, find a camp with activities your child will love. Your child will thrive at a camp that offers full days
of play, thrilling field trips and healthy activities, like the camps at Life Time The Healthy Way of Life Company. And don’t forget to pack a swimsuit and sunscreen. 3. Healthy meals and snacks. Active kids need to be properly fed during the day, so make sure whichever camp you choose provides adequate and healthy nutrition and time for breaks. Sugar-filled, processed foods are often the norm and it’s always okay to question the menu. And don’t forget to ask about how the camp handles food allergies. Make sure whichever camp you choose makes nutrition and hydration a priority. 4. Flexible drop-off and pick-up options. Just because your kids have the summer off does not mean your schedule becomes more flexible. Look for
camps that offer the option to drop them off early so you can still get to work on time. Similarly, many camps offer later pick up times, often key for working parents. Life Time Kids camps offer early drop off for just $20 per week if your kids
are signed up for a camp that starts in the morning. There is no need to worry about finding the right kids’ camp when you know what to look for. Use this as a checklist and your child will be on their way to a summer full of fun and adven-
