uly is a bustling, busy time in the Vail Valley. Farmers markets overflow with ripe fruit and veggies. Trails are filled with bikers and hikers, while the rivers beckon rafters, paddleboarders and kayakers. At the Ford Amphitheater, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival brings in three orchestras for summer residences. When they pack up and leave town, dancers from the world over rush in and take the stage. Restaurants are full and shops are buzzing. Despite the long days, there just isn’t enough time to do it all. There’s no shortage of ways to fill a Vail Valley summer. And if you’re ready to trade this vacationer’s paradise for a home of your own, now is a good time to talk to a local REALTOR®. Check the market update section and read about the local market. There’s some competition for homes these days, so it’s a good time to enlist the guidance and experience of a Vail Valley REALTOR ®. Our organization, its members and partners exist to provide the most informed, ethical and comprehensive options for clients and their real estate needs for both primary and secondary residences as well as investment properties.
Cheers,

not only to some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, but also to terrifically talented artists who capture it on canvas. Fourth generation Colorado native Cheryl St. John says her love for the outdoors influences her artwork. “Painting en plein-air is always a challenge, never-ever routine,” she says. “The changing light and weather conditions create a sense of urgency that translates to a spontaneous and loose interpretation of the scene, something that is very difficult to achieve in the studio. Besides, it’s a great excuse to be outdoors.” Another local Colorado artist, Thomas Gargan, states “Art, or the perception of art, means something different to everyone. It is a personal journey of growth, adventure, and expression for me.” What better way to make a personal statement in your home than incorporating art reflective of our beautiful surroundings? And after you’ve found the perfect piece, head over to Mount-N-Frame in Vail to see Linda Osterberg. She has thousands of frame styles to compliment your artwork and makes the framing process easy and fun.

picture frames stand as staggered nostalgia on bookshelves in homes all over the world. The coveted platforms house classic reads and collected memories, timeless trinkets and beachcombing keepsakes. Patty Cuny, owner of Nest Furnishings in Avon, explains how it’s the storage provided by all styles of bookshelves that makes them good for both decoration and utility. “From functional bookshelves to the really ornate ones, they really run the gamut,” she says. “Some people want them to display their fine things, and others need to store their kids’ toys.” Nest has the unique looks that cozy nooks call for, and Worth Home in Vail has more contemporary designs to creatively fill every corner.

Simple pine bookshelves like this piece featured from Nest are useful for children’s books and toy storage, an office library or row of films. The clean lines on this style of furniture are versatile to dress up or play down, so find a home for the shelves in a social area or functional space. Solid wood planks finished in Worth Home’s new tobacco wash have been formed to create this curvaceous wall unit. It holds its own floating in space, or flush against a wall. Although the piece was created to be bookshelf, it could just as easily be considered a functional sculpture.
This modern, asymmetrical bookshelf from Worth Home has a textured iron finish, featuring eight tiered glass shelves for refined display and useful storage. The long and thin lines give it a minimalist feel, offering the items it displays even more relevance.

This Worth Home shelving unit has a natural feel amidst the more industrial materials of steel and glass. The enclosed structure gives the items it frames a reverent and timeless respect, ideal for encapsulating refined memories and displaying prized collectables.
Carved wood, like that of this tri-shelf case at Nest, gives pieces a more authentic look. Incorporating classic pieces into contemporary spaces can help to give a home a little more heart, like how these antiquestyle shelves offer second-hand books a thoughtful spot to rest their words.

FINE ART
THE ART OF THE HOME Buying inspiration for your space by KIM FULLER
B
uying art for a home
is not always a product of love at first sight, explains Marc LeVarn, co-owner of Vail International Gallery. Just like anything, the more you put into the process, the more you are going to get out of it. “You can have lightning strike and just know something is right,” LeVarn shares. “But don’t just look for that; go around and look closely, and go back for a second look.”
26
VAIL VALLEY HOME | JULY 2014
Once you decide what your natural taste is, or what your home is like and what you think will be fitting in it, LeVarn says this is when to start looking more acutely at art — focusing on pieces that speak to you in regard to your style, genre and price. Bill Rey, partner at Claggett/ Rey Gallery in Vail, says that as homes get more contemporary, there will be ebb and flow with how much modern versus con-
temporary art is incorporated into aesthetics. Perhaps, he muses, a happy medium between the two is what works. “A lot of the art being created that is traditional is framed traditionally,” he says. “But when you throw a contemporary frame on it, it really works beautifully.” It’s like taking a very rustic mountain house and putting contemporary furnishings in it, which can work, Rey says, but
only if you can keep things at a high level of quality, craftsmanship and creativity. “To me, I don’t care what type of art it is,” shares Rey, “it’s all about the quality. The higher the quality, I think the more significant the impact is on people’s lives and their investment.” Defining quality comes from an education and ever-evolving knowledge around art, Rey says. “A lot of people get caught up

A LOT OF PEOPLE GET CAUGHT UP IN THAT THEY HAVE A NEED, AND THEY RUSH OUT TO FILL THAT NEED OR LET A DESIGNER FILL THAT NEED, BUT THEY DON’T ALWAYS BUY A LEVEL OF QUALITY. THAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIGH ART AND DECORATIVE ART. ”

in that they have a need, and they rush out to fill that need or let a designer fill that need, but they don’t always buy a level of quality,” he says. “That’s the difference between high art and decorative art.” Rather than making a beautifully built home fairly sterile with runof-the-mill art, Rey shares how he prefers to see a home filled with unique things that the owners purchased themselves, collections that have stories and meaning. “In these times, in all genres of art, there are the ‘best of the living’ that are affordable and great quality,” he says, “and that just takes some learning.” Buying a piece of art for a certain wall or room is not the same as being an art collector, although one aesthetic step can certainly lead to many more. “People who are decorating their home with art are putting their first big toe into collecting,” explains LeVarn. “Some people get the bug and some people don’t, but it all starts out with wanting to have something nice that you enjoy,” Collecting art is about more than filling a space, continues LeVarn. He says a collector is someone who starts looking in the context of when and how it was produced, and whether or not it was produced in dialogue with other artists. “You love the history, love the story and the process, and you’re excited about acquiring works 28

Step one: Plan Proper planning leads to satisfaction. Glen Ellison, owner of Ceres Landcare in Eagle, says spending money up front in the design process goes a long way to save cash in the end because it clarifies homeowners’ visions and expectations. Homeowners plant gardens for a variety of reasons, including: visual pleasure, food, an exploratory and educational area for kids, and an attraction for birds and butterflies. Deciding which priorities are important, as well as how much maintenance such a garden will take, is essential. Then, considering color, texture and design takes priority. Color obviously makes a garden pop, so choose a variety of flowers that bloom throughout the spring, midsummer and late summer. “Coordinate the colors so it looks like it makes sense and it’s not spotty,” says LeeAnn Esp, master gardener at Hood Landscaping, which serves Eagle and Summit counties. She achieves such an effect by grouping large patches of the same flower together. Grasses and feathery plants add texture and also give gar30

dens a native feel, since they are drought-tolerant. Tall trees form a nice backdrop for gardens, accented by shrubs, and then taller flowers and ground covering in the forefront. And, these days, gardens extend beyond just the live material; myriad products, from pavers and stones to water features and sculptures exist to add interest to outdoor spaces. Ellison suggests reviewing the materials available, including pavers or rocks, to ensure the shape, color, size and texture complements the architecture of the home.
Step two: Soil The most important step in creating a successful garden involves amending the soil, Esp says. “You can buy the most beautiful plants, but if your soil isn’t good, they aren’t going to grow,” she says. The soil’s nutrients, pH, texture, and pathogens affects plant hardiness. Esp recommends buying the best topsoil and adding compost containing a mixture of cotton fur, a tiny amount of manure and nutrients such as peat. This mixture also ensures
softer dirt, which allows better aeration so roots can fully extend into the ground. “For trees, proper planting technique and proper soil care after planting will make ‘THE’ difference in the trees’ establishment and longevity,” says Steve Tarrant, owner Brush Creek Landscaping in Eagle, on his website. Step two: Plant selection In addition to soil preparation, proper plant selection is essential. The Vail Valley falls into zones 3 and 4. Theoretically, each 1,000-foot increase in

elevation shortens the growing season by about a month and results in one drop of a hardiness zone. However, microclimatic differences vary in parts of the valley, so experience is the best teacher, according to Brush Creek Landscaping. Here are some factors to take into consideration when choosing plants: sun exposure; the match of environmental conditions to a plant’s natural habitat and type of soil; wind conditions; likelihood of deer visiting and eating plants; moisture received; and disease problems that could be avoided with different exposure or care. Esp tends to purchase plants locally, to help ensure hardiness and match the plants’ natural habitats. She chooses groundcovers and strongstemmed varieties for windy regions and plants deer don’t like to munch on, such as catmint, salvia, moonshine yarrow, echinacea, lambs ear, creeping phlox and sedum. Plants’ growth cycles must also be in sync with the Valley’s season. June 15 is a safe planting date in Vail, though downvalley, residents can start digging in around the first week of June, Esp says. “Keep an open mind when choosing plants because we really do have a great

West Vail selection of plants that work here,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to try new things in different places in the garden and see what works.” Step three: Water, a little or a lot Irrigation systems compensate for Colorado’s dry climate. “You always need irrigation,” says Karolina Zolnierczyk, landscape designer at Ceres Landcare, “even if it’s xeriscape, you need drip irrigation or a low spray.”
Xeriscaping — landscaping with drought-tolerant plants — requires more water when the plants are first taking root. Once they’re established, homeowners can begin decreasing water output, and plants like catmint
and salvia become very drought tolerant, Esp says. Beyond summertime, Xeriscaping adds a touch of green, brown and texture to an otherwise white winter. “Xeriscaping is excellent because it incorporates grasses and evergreen shrubs into garden spaces, whereas a typical garden only has perennials (and annuals), and then they die and you only have snow,” Zolnierczyk says. “It adds a variety of textures in the winter.” With water-loving plants, be careful: It’s actually possible to drown them out. Too much water limits root growth, especially with trees, which reduces aeration. Excessive irrigation or moisture toward the end of summer — especially when combined with over-fertilization — can delay a plant’s ability to go into dormancy, which makes it vulnerable to frost, heavy snow or wind damage. The final step: Experimentation Like any worthy pursuit, high-elevation gardening requires patience and persistence. “I feel that people think that the gardens up here have to be boring and can’t be colorful, but there are so many possibilities up here,” Zolnierczyk says. “You just have to have fun with the garden. Play with it.”

DOWNVALLEY Q&A
FIVE QUESTIONS WITH
Darce O’Connor of Anam Cara Pilates and Massage Therapy by PHIL LINDEMAN
T
h i s i s n ’ t y o u r av e r a g e
pilates experience. Found on the east edge of Eagle, Anam Cara Pilates and Massage Therapy is the sort of studio made for wellness gurus who just want to live better, never mind hot new trends. Pilates — a total-body practice to bolster flexibility, core strength and spine health — isn’t as sparse as hatha yoga or as brutal as a fitness boot camp, but Anam Cara has earned a faithful downvalley following since it opened in 2005. And it shows: The studio expanded this spring to add new space for classes and equipment. To celebrate, owner Darce O’Connor is offering a roster of free group classes until the end of June. Near the start of her monthlong remodel party, Vail Valley HOME spoke with O’Connor to get her thoughts on the expansion and pilates philosophy.
vail valley home : Congratulations on the recent expansion. Why was now a good time to spread your wings? darce o ’ connor : This expansion was helped by the economy for one thing. I opened my first studio in 2005 in Eagle, but I just moved to this new space last year. That first studio was very small, and I had never really intended to teach — I just wanted to do pilates in Eagle. Where I’m at
42
VAIL VALLEY HOME | JULY 2014
now is about four times larger than where I was, so the price was right and the time was right. This was something that needed to happen in Eagle. There really aren’t any other studios that practice pilates. For newcomers, what’s your personal definition of pilates? do : I came to pilates by having lots of injuries, from being a skier and biker and just an outdoor athlete. Those injuries had thrown my body out of balance, and I found that pilates was really the only thing that could help me stay active and stable. Pilates is kind of a specialized exercise program that focuses a lot on core strength and stability. It’s such a brilliant form of exercise, even for those smaller, intrinsic muscles. We use our large muscles so often, like our quads for hiking and skiing, but those smaller muscles get neglected. This doesn’t leave them out. I knew I needed to do it for the rest of my life and I really wanted to share that with the rest of the world. vvh :
The studio’s name, Anam Cara, refers to a Celtic spiritual belief, which I didn’t realize could be tied to pilates. Talk about that approach to fitness – how is it different than at a major studio? do : Yes, it literally means “soul friend” in Gaelic. I like to think I’m a personal trainer for people on an intimate level (laughs). I guess I’m just trying to help my fellow man, help people become more aware of that body-mindspirit connection, of their space in vvh :
the world. That’s really at the core of pilates, being in control of your body. I’m also of Scottish decent, so it made sense. This is really a meditative practice, or at least it should be. Rather than being in an aerobics class where music is blasting and you’re jumping around, this is the other end of the spectrum. It’s not like we’re quiet and totally still, but it’s a bit more about reflecting inward. It’s a very peaceful, calming, meditative experience. How do you tailor your classes to exercise that mindbody connection? do : Interesting question. I guess I really try to incorporate breathing in what we do. I find that we, people, are always in our neck and shoulders, just sitting at computers or anything like that. My main goal is to get people to open up their breathing, their heart, and open up so they can expand their breath and move their ribs. It’s nothing I do different than anyone else, but I like to highlight that. It’s just important to have movement in every plane, from flexion vvh :
to extension. That keeps our bodies moving properly. I know an instructor who teaches yoga, and she says yoga and pilates are twin sisters. They aren’t the exact same thing, but a lot of people are able to do both and they really enjoy it. In my experience yoga is wonderful, but I think there’s just more action in pilates. I don’t mean to bash the yoga community — I just find it to be more static, where you hold a pose and don’t move. Pilates is more active, but there’s still a lot of crossover. If a client has practiced pilates for years — maybe the sort of person who’s on the brink of fading away — what class do you suggest? do : I’m doing what I call a definitive barre class. It’s an intensive, muscle-toning workout that includes pilates and dance — ballet, really. Now, I don’t have a degree in dance like I wish I did, but I like fitting that in there to focus on being athletic and intense strengthening. I’d just like to keep moving for the rest of my life. vvh :

The exceptional home at 275 Wild Rose in Mountain Star is custom-made for the uncommon buyer whose needs require only the very best. The distinctive architectural design, by renowned architect Peter Dominick, combines inventive art with nature in a modern format that will leave one completely breathless. He has created three
natural stone structures that are connected by two steel and glass greenhouses, forming a timeless home that draws the outdoors into every corner. Mr. Dominick’s architectural specialty was designing buildings that celebrated the Colorado landscape that he loved, and this home could not be a more spectacular addition to his
legacy. He collaborated with Slifer Designs to harmonize both colors and materials to emphasize the wonders of nature. White oak mocha and sandstone floors, glacial granite Kashmir slab countertops and ebonized oak base trim are examples of what can be expected from this residence. An open floor plan with the

Summer has arrived in the Vail Valley and we, at the Vail Board of REALTORS®, are looking forward to an exhilarating summer selling season. The name of the game this summer: Competition. And, we

are ready. Although inventory has been relatively low in May, it is definitely picking up. This is good news for both buyers and sellers. The free market thrives on competition and so do we. Despite a mixed bag of national economic news as of late, the Vail Valley does not conform (but we already knew that… it’s part of why we live here). A great time for real estate Aside from the beautiful
scenery and the pull to spend the entire day outside, soaking in fun and sun, representing real estate in the Vail Valley is one of the best professions to be involved in. We get to tout how much we love our valley, take our buying clients to world-class events and entertainment illustrating our enthusiasm for this community, and help our selling clients turn compelling properties into exciting opportunities. Needless to say, this profession
can be very rewarding when it all comes together. As mentioned in past article analysis, the luxury market set the pace in the first quarter of this year with exponential sales. And, we continue to maintain the opinion that the rest of the market will follow suit. The May Colorado Association of REALTORS® (CAR) numbers support this assertion. Albeit, with a few caveats. primary real estate markets: townhouse-condos and single family/duplex homes. The Vail Valley numbers, however, are more accurately represented as resort markets (Vail and Lionshead Villages, Beaver Creek Resort) vs. neighborhoods and communities. We have townhousecondos and single family/duplex homes in both areas! This can be a source of confusion and is important to keep this in mind when discussing CAR real estate numbers referenced here. With this said, one fact we can accurately convey through the numbers: Pending sales are up across the board. According to VMLS Board Director and respected broker associate, Michelle Rampelt, the market in general is up. In fact, Rampelt’s company just posted historical record-breaking sales volume in April, indicating continued market strength on the horizon. “The Vail Valley real estate market was strong through the first quarter with 33 percent growth over last year, and has continued a steady uptick in the second quarter as evidenced by the amount of buyer interest and urgency we are experiencing,” states Rampelt. “Factors encouraging buyers include proven sold data signaling a rise in home prices, slight but steady increases in interest rates, and competition. Buyers are realizing that wellpriced homes will go quickly and are prepared to take action, from entry level to luxury.” Inventory begets competition While inventory appears to be relatively low, it is on the rise with new listings up 12.5 percent for single family/duplex homes and 24.7 percent for the townhome-
54
VAIL VALLEY HOME | JULY 2014
condo market. More inventory means more competition, therefore pushing sales prices up. “The increased desire and competition within buyers means prices are likely to continue rising, instilling urgency,” explains Rampelt. “And, on the flip side, sellers should consider listing their properties while demand is hot if they want to move a property quickly. The biggest challenge with low inventory, in my opinion, is the struggle to match our clients with the properties they seek.” Savvy sellers can get a jump on the competition by bringing their property to the market now. Enlisting the help and market knowledge of a seasoned real estate professional, like Rampelt, can definitely increase the chances of a smooth, quick sale with all parties feeling satisfied. In closing, Rampelt again references the differences in the resort markets and our primary, community/neighborhood markets, in that not only are the markets different, but the buyers are too. Vacation-home customers have differing goals and desires than those of primary home customers. Although both are out there searching during the summer months, the primary home customer tends to focus on the summer window of opportunity, making competition that much faster and more furious. If you are interested in buying or selling real estate this summer in the Vail Valley, consider discussing the market details in earnest with a REALTOR® who specializes your area of interest, whether it be resort, vacation/second home, a specific neighborhood or town that suits you. Their input and expertise can be invaluable in a competitive marketplace.

ou have probably heard the motto from just about every year-round local resident: “Winter is great but summer is why we live here.” If all you’ve experienced is the winter here –—skiing the euphoric expanse of Vail’s Back Bowls or meandering through the magical holiday-lit setting of
Vail or Beaver Creek Village – you may find this hard to believe. But as unbeatable as the winter feels, the summer may indeed be even better. Here’s why:

farmers markets
Delivering a surge of giddiness on par with that which comes with seeing the circus roll into town, local farmers markets park their myriad of tents throughout the valley every weekend, bringing fresh produce from Western Slope farmers, a spectacle of artwork, an onslaught of tasty goodies and hundreds of people filing through to check it out. Vail — Transforming the Town of Vail into a sea of heads moving to a soundtrack of free live jazz music every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 15 to Oct. 5, the Vail Farmers Market and Art Show is comprised of wares ranging from long boards to wooden furniture, handcrafted jewelry to avocado salad dressing. The small bites come from top local restaurants — fine dining sampler plates from Larkspur to sandwiches from Joe’s Famous Deli Minturn — From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 14 to Sept. 16, Saturday is the day to find Minturn popping. Handcrafted artwork is abundant at the Minturn Market – sometimes even plein air painting or glass blowing before your eyes — and local treats ranging from falafels to pastries while live entertainment swings from belly dancing to bluegrass to culinary demonstrations by local chefs. Edwards — Also happening on Saturdays, the Edwards Farmers Market is a bit smaller and focuses primarily on fresh vegetables, fruit and gourmet food items. Eat just-picked cherries or peaches from Palisade, buy a vat of local honey or homemade soap and do a jig to the tunes of a rotating lineup of local musicians.

live music
There is no shortage of opportunities to soak up the fresh air in front of the stage. There is music to be found nearly every day of the week in the Vail Valley, and much of it is completely free. TUESDAYS The Hot Summer Nights free concert series kicks off at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday beginning June 17, filling Gerald Ford Amphitheater with the sounds of nationally recognized rock, folk, pop and hip hop artists. This is the single place to see just about everyone you know in town. THURSDAYS Down in Eagle, the ShowDownTown Concert series delivers free music to a lawn full of friends and families at 6:30 p.m. The 20th annual Vail Jazz Festival brings an assortment of A-list artists spanning the genre from Latin jazz to swing to classic, to Lionshead’s Jazz @ Vail Square at 6 p.m. Tickets for tent seats are $15 to $30. The festival culminates in a wallto-wall extravaganza at the end of the summer with the Labor Day Weekend Jazz Party. Info/ Tickets at vailjazz.org FRIDAYS Vail’s Friday Afternoon Club at Eagle’s Nest brings a slew of Colorado musicians to the top of the mountain, along with barbecue, drinks and lawn games, every Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
bravo! vail
Running from June 27 to Aug. 2, Bravo! Vail hosts a series of performances that literally reverberate off the surrounding peaks. The only festival in North America to host not one but three world-class orchestras (The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and The Philadelphia Orchestra), it’s no wonder NPR ranked Bravo! among the Top 10 “Can’t Miss” U.S. classical music festivals. The powerful performances at Gerald Ford Amphitheater are best enjoyed with a cheese and chocolate picnic on the lawn, but the festival also brings a number of Soiree performances to private residences, Silver Oak series to Donovan Pavillion and free concert series to Vail Interfaith Chapel, Gypsum Town Hall, Brush Creek Pavillion, Crazy Mountain Brewery and the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera. hiking
Sure, the mountains are awesome to sashay down through fresh powder on skis or snowboards, but you actually get to see more of them – and their many colors in all of their blooming glory – when you go up. Popular hikes include Berry Picker on Vail Mountain – a three-mile trek through aspen and pine forests, crossing streams flocked with a variety of (mostly unedible so don’t try it) berries. You end up at Eagle’s Nest, where you can take in the majestic Mount of the Holy Cross in the distance and ride the gondola down for free or take a different version of Berry Picker segments back down. In East Vail, Booth Falls is a favorite, starting out steep and rocky before mellowing out through a pristine ravine occupied by Booth Creek. You reach the roaring waterfalls after about an hour of climbing and can continue on, if you feel so inclined, for about three more hours to the lakes at the top. In Beaver Creek, Beaver Lake Trail is a popular choice, taking you along the actual Beaver Creek up a mild incline of about 3 miles through wildflowers and pines to the glassy, serene Lake. Hiking tips: Start early and make sure you know the weather forecast before you go. Wear plenty of sunscreen and sturdy shoes. Bring water, snacks and a rain jacket. Be sure to turn back if you see dark clouds building overhead.
biking
One of the best workouts to be found this time of year, two wheels also present the ultimate way to take in the scenery. Whether along the recreation path that runs from Eagle-Vail all the way up Vail Pass or on dirt up and down the mountain, biking brings a rush of adrenaline and jumpstarts your lungs for high altitude living. Milder mountain biking with less climbing can be found down in Eagle while both Vail and Beaver Creek have a variety of beginner, intermediate and expert trails. There are no bike hauls at Beaver Creek this summer, but for downhill riders or those still working on their lungs before intensive uphill rides can pay to bring their bikes up the gondola at Vail. A favorite beginner trail is Fourth of July trail in Eagle, a solid intermediate ride is Lion Down in Vail and a thrilling expert ride is Corkscrew at Beaver Creek. Bike tips: Never ride without a helmet. Bring water, extra tube, hand pump and snacks.

A sense of place MAKE YOUR HOME A STATEMENT OF CONNECTION TO THE ROCKIES by KIMBERLY NICOLETTI
C
reating a home is a personal statement, an interaction between a family’s lifestyle with its environment. When it comes to mountain living, homeowners have a unique opportunity to connect their unique style to the Rockies, through architecture, interior design and outdoor living features. Crafting your home into a statement of connection to mountain living results from transforming a structure into a place of comfort and lasting bonds, both with human beings and with nature. “A home should speak to two equally important things: the nature of the place it is a part of and the nature and aspirations of the people who live in it,” says Daniel Dettwiler, an intern at Shepherd Resources, Inc. AIA Architects.

Shepherd Resources, Inc. AIA Architects. “In response, the architecture should display appropriate strength and shelter, while allowing the site’s dominance to prevail; the architecture should ultimately be subordinate to the site. Our homes shouldn’t be loud and noisy, but display quiet simplicity that recedes into the forest, or under the ridgeline, or among the meadow grasses.” The use of natural materials, such as wood and stone, allows

a mountain home to blend in “and appear to grow from the earth it occupies,” says Ryan Wolffe, a senior associate at Shepherd Resources. This approach has been used since people began building homes; they studied their environment, asking: “’What’s here that we can work with? What can we gather to build with?’” DeChant says, pointing out that we follow early inhabitants’ leads by using wood and stone, and then modernize architecture by incorporating high-tech glass, metal and more. In both traditional and modern mountain homes, large windows are essential, “because much of our mountain experience is about views, about visual and physical connection to the setting, (so) our homes must reveal and promote this priority,” DeChant says, adding that in the Rocky’s wintery environment, any architectural glass features should still convey a sense of “strength, substance and shelter.” “One of the privileges of designing homes in the Rockies is that it has a strong sense of place — there is a great tradition … to draw on,” Dettwiler says. “Heavy timbers reflect the evergreens that carpet the mountain slopes. Stone blocks ground houses to the mountains they stand on. The beauty is that these materials can be expressed in many styles, anything from a roughhewn log truss in a traditional heavy timber lodge to modern square-cut timber columns in a glass wall supporting a flat green roof above. Both are timeless and both speak to the nature of the Colorado Mountains.”
MUCH OF OUR MOUNTAIN EXPERIENCE IS ABOUT VIEWS, ABOUT VISUAL AND PHYSICAL CONNECTION TO THE SETTING.” INTERIOR DESIGN Various textures, from jutting stones and rushing rivers, to smooth blankets of snow and pointed pine needles, characterize the Rocky Mountains. Layering texture inside a home mirrors the rich textures outdoors. Fur throws, sheepskin rugs and fabrics ranging from mohair and cashmere to rich velvet and nubby linens (used on sofa pillows, window treatments and more) provide a cozy, yet luxurious, feel. Textured walls, in the form of Venetian plaster, also help connect an interior with exterior features, says Yvonne
Jacobs, president of Slifer Designs in Edwards. Lush fabrics, light window treatments and oversized sofas can balance harsh environmental elements, like wind and snow, to establish a softer, more nurturing home. “These elements help to create a more relaxed environment, both physically and psychologically,” says Vicki Glotzer, a designer at Worth Interiors in Avon. Wise use of color, both on interior walls and as accent pieces like pillows and window treatments, also helps connect homes with the Rockies. “In this area, earthy accents

ARCHITECTURE The rugged heights of the Rocky Mountains inspire architecture that matches the awe-arousing landscape, without overpowering it. “The home sites upon which we design are not meek or timid, but dominant, very powerful and dynamic simply by their mountain nature, and also subject to winter climate extremes,” says Doug DeChant, principal of

toward modern doesn’t mean it can’t maintain its connection with the Rockies. Mountain contemporary style incorporates raw materials like wood and metal with cleaner, sharper looking lines, as opposed to the greater detail found in traditional mountain homes. Lighting can include iron with hand-blown glass for an artisan look, or fixtures made of cast metal, which mimic tree branches. Even traditional antler chandeliers have been reconceived in new materials, such as ceramic and lacquer, to make them appear more modern. “It’s the organic combined with modern that defines the mountain modern style,” Glotzer says. OUTDOOR LIVING Merging outdoor living with indoor living is almost a requirement in any mountain home. Myriad ways exist, from placing freestanding propane heaters on decks for warming chilly nights to installing water features, inground hot tubs, outdoor kitchens and flowering landscaping. Each larger project becomes an art form in and of itself — particularly seamless landscaping. “The natural existing grade

can be used to bring Mother Nature inside the home,” Glotzer says. “It’s nice to accent interiors with neutral tones of brown and green to create a continuity between outside and inside, especially in mountain homes with spectacular views.” The mountains’ relatively simple color palette of white, greens and browns, as opposed to other landscapes that may burst with colorful flowers for longer periods of time, allows homeowners to employ stronger colors within their homes, Jacobs says. Warm colors also add to a sense of serenity and ease. Many second-home owners tend to collect vintage ski posters and sports equipment to express a cabin ambiance. “Artwork is a great way to bring the beauty of Colorado into your home,” Glotzer says. “Photographs and paintings of the local environment are a quick and easy way of establishing a connection with the Rocky Mountains.” Games on tables, large stone fireplaces, and wet and dry bars also encourage the playful interaction mountain life fosters. And just because a home leans
and vegetation would be allowed to grow right up to the edges of the home as if it were gently placed there,” Wolffe says. “The spaces would blur the line between indoors and outdoors so that one feels connected to nature at every possible opportunity. There would be a multitude of options for outdoor living depending on season, time of day and weather.” Ultimately, creating your personal connection to the Rockies through your home comes down to what you love most — and what’s attainable. It’s important to have fun with indoor and outdoor mountain décor, like Adam Harrison, a senior associate at Shepherd Resources, who mounts his family’s old snowboards on his house and has built a swing out of a chairlift seat. As Wolffe points out, someone living in a 10,000 squarefoot home in Bachelor Gulch could have “the same emotional response to ‘home’ as someone who buys a used trailer in Gypsum. Both owners are just as likely to say, ‘I can’t wait to go home’ or ‘it’s great to be home’ after a long absence. Both owners can raise families and build lasting memories” by creating a home that reminds them of their passion for the Rocky Mountains. “We should never underestimate the power of a well-crafted space to provide comfort, convenience and inspiration,” says Dettwiler.

Eschewing the digital age, Matt Inden’s vintage gear and artistic dedication allow him to capture the world as he sees it.

att Inden was supposed to be a soccer player or a ski racer. Growing up in Delaware, he spent his high-school years at a ski academy in Vermont to train. It was there that he took a photography class, taught by the father of a fellow racer and student. A few rolls of film later, he put the camera down at the end of the class and didn’t pick it up again for years. He’s made up for lost time, though. After a stint as a photojournalist for the Vail Trail newspaper, he went on to shoot for the Colorado Tourism Bureau, crisscrossing the state to capture all that is quintessential Colorado. Inden’s gone solo now, and has a small gallery in Lionshead filled with his visions of Colorado and beyond. It’s a little discombobulating, standing amongst the large prints. Though representing a vast array of expansive scenics and intense textural studies, they’re unified in one thing: They pull you in and make you feel like you’re there. “I want people to be in the photo,” Inden says. “I want them to really be there.” Whether it’s lily pads suspended on Lost Lake or the moon setting at sunrise over Shrine Pass, if a shot has made it to his gallery’s walls then there’s something special about it. It means everything worked. His photographs capture the spirit of the mountains and allow them to live inside for a while. No two ways about it: Inden is impractical. He doesn’t just hike for his shots, but he hikes carrying his vintage Deardorff 8x10 camera, complete with bellows, curtain and large sheets of film. Imagine the camera used for family portraits a century ago — that’s what he hauls around. When he heads out for a day of shooting, his pack weighs about 65 pounds. For overnights, it comes in closer to 80. Because each sheet of film is a commitment (every time he hits the shutter button it costs $30), he is meticulous in his setup. He might spend hours dialing in a scene before actually photographing it, all the while keeping an eye on the sun and
shadows. He can tilt the body this way and that, bring up the texture in one spot or soften it in another, all by working with the focus, depth of field and tilt. And he does it all upside down, since he’s not looking into a viewfinder but a mirror that throws back the scene upside down and backwards. “I’m competitive, which is probably from my sports background,” Inden says. “I like getting the best image possible from a particular area. I want to put the best work out there that I can.” “He’s very particular,” says Inden’s printmaker, Ron Landucci of Infinite Editions. “Of all my clients, he’s in the top 10 percent for being picky at getting what he wants.” Inden approaches his images like a graphic designer, which is why they make such fine art. Whether it’s strong vertical lines or ephemeral textures, he slowly and carefully puts the scene together. Sometimes he’s affected by how long he’s been going for an image of a place, or by how long it’s been since his last successful shot. For instance, he’s been trying to get a perfect shot in JULY 2014 | VAIL VALLEY HOME

Jackson Hole for seven years. Last summer he spent nine days camping and exploring. Finally — finally — the world opened up for him for exactly seven seconds. And he was ready for it, capturing exactly what he wanted. But it’s not always such an epic quest. He hiked Shrine Pass five mornings in a row a few years back. Located just south of Vail Pass, it’s an easy jaunt up from Minturn. And the morning of the fifth day he saw the moon setting and the sun rising, the wildflowers were bursting into bloom and the light was magical. He knew immediately that he had something special, something perfect. And he was right. “Matt’s really specific about not doing a lot of manipulation to the image,” Landucci says. “He just wants it to show what it was that made it interesting to him, to make it look like it did when he was there.” Being in the gallery is like taking a quick tour through Colorado, from Vail’s backyard in the White River National Forest to the peaks and valleys of Southern Colorado. Lately he’s been venturing out of state more. A couple years ago, he spent a few weeks on the East Coast. He traveled from the Adirondacks down to Tennessee and back again, shooting on the way. The photo he’s happiest with, though, he got after he returned to Delaware, to the house where he grew up, and took a hike two miles down the road. That image is now hanging

I DON’T WANT TO SOUND CHEESE BALL, BUT THE IDEA IS TO REALLY TRANSPORT THE VIEWER. I WANT TO GET THEM TO THAT MOMENT IN NATURE, TO THE IDEA OF THE SCENE.” in Montauk restaurant in Lionshead: rambly, brambly fall colors in the chaos of a living forest. “I don’t want to sound cheese ball, but the idea is to really transport the viewer,” Inden says about his work. “I want to get them to that moment in nature, to the idea of the scene.” Falling into his photographs, the idea doesn’t seem cheese ball at all: That’s just how it works.
