I
n a recent edition of Art in Aspen, gallery owner Ann Korologos said, “Art brings out our humanness and our instincts for something greater than ourselves.” I think she speaks to that feeling I often get when I’m standing in an art museum or in front of a beautiful sculpture and I get lost in the wonder of what it all means. Sometimes I think I figure it out. Most times I know I haven’t a clue. But all of the time, I feel empowered to do and be more — to live with greater purpose. That’s the beauty of art. I’m often grateful for how fortunate I am to live in a community with such a vibrant arts and culture scene. From the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet to the world-renowned Aspen Art Museum and myriad creative genius in between, we are surrounded by the magic of creative inspiration. Whether searching for exquisite handmade jewelry, a custom walnut coffee table or a one-of-a-kind contemporary painting, the galleries of Aspen are home to almost anything the mind can imagine. The art scene changes frequently, too, almost guaranteeing that the offerings will be different with each new visit. I encourage you to spend some time on the pages of Art in Aspen. Take a tour of the galleries on our map. The talent that exists in our little corner of the world will astonish you. I challenge you to explore something new — take a class, attend an opening, listen to a lecture, or simply enjoy an installation at the Aspen Art Museum (it’s free; you’d be crazy not to). You won’t be disappointed.

eter Lik is a leader in the world of fine art photography. For decades, his name has been synonymous with pristine landscape images of cascading waterfalls, ethereal mountain peaks and peaceful desert canyons. Opened in 2008, LIK ASPEN is one of 13 locations around the country, showcasing some of Peter’s most impressive masterworks. The gallery’s interior warmly welcomes guests with its impressive stone fireplace and reclaimed wood ceiling. Localthemed landscapes line the walls— from majestic visions of the Maroon Bells to Peter’s stunning 20 foot EPIC masterpiece, Rouge. Such exceptional work can only be attributed to a photographer with innate talent and passion. Born in Melbourne Australia to hardworking Czech immigrants, Peter never took the gift of life’s beauty for granted. Since his first, fateful snapshot of a spider web at the age of 8, Peter has followed his calling to capture and share the most beautiful places on earth. During a trip to the United

ver his 35 year career, Albert Sanford, owner of Galerie Maximillian, has always believed in one standard when buying art: “If I’m not willing to hang a piece in my own home, it does not deserve a place on the walls of my gallery, or in my client’s home.” It is this passionate, personal relationship to art and the experience of collecting that makes the gallery one of Aspen’s finest.

“This print shows my symbolic representation of the irrational beast that controls the financial market—half bull, half bear. He—and it most definitely is a he—is surrounded by symbols taken from the names of patterns seen in Japanese Candlestick graphs. These graphs were supposedly invented by 16th Century Japanese rice traders to help them understand the fluctuations in their market and they are still used today on the computer screens of city traders.” Grayson Perry
Here you will find work by the world’s most coveted artists, both modern and contemporary, housed in an environment that is lively, welcoming and engaging. Clients become friends and visit the gallery season after season, year after year. This is a priceless relationship rooted in trust. “Our customers have confidence in our expertise and they appreciate the fact that we are one of the longest running galleries in Aspen,” says Sanford. “Established in 1997, we are committed to spending time with our clients, helping them build quality collections that they can enjoy and be proud of for generations.” The gallery changes installations frequently, so it is almost guaranteed that you will see something new every time you visit. This summer the gallery lineup features two extraordinary shows and a surprise “Pop-Up” exhibition.
Grayson Perry: Animal Spirits, June 24th – July 26th, will feature a magnificent new woodcut and related engravings, of a half bull, half bear that was inspired by the symbolic beasts, or “animal spirits,” that control the financial markets. The artist has also drawn inspiration from ancient Japanese Candlestick Graphs. “Perry has created a powerful visual statement about a timeless theme - the fluctuations of the financial markets and the resulting impact on our lives,” says Sanford. “This highly relevant work of art presented in a historical context is guaranteed to be a highlight of the summer season.” The show also features new British projects by Ian Davenport • Damien Hirst • David Hockney and Anish Kapoor. Jim Dine: Abstraction, July 22 – September 15th, will feature new, abstract works on paper by Jim Dine, as well as conceptual print projects by Arturo Herrera • James Turrell • Cy Twombly and Christopher Wool. And finally, stay tuned for Harland Miller: High on Hope, a special “Pop-Up” exhibition during AAM ArtCrush, August 3rd – 7th. For more information: art@galeriemax.com, 970-925-6100.

G
allery owner Ann Korologos is fond of saying, “A gallery is a place where you can lose yourself and travel to the artist’s moment. Art brings out our humanness and our instinct for appreciating something greater than ourselves.”
To Korologos, it is important for art lovers to get to know artists personally or at least gain insight into their works. “One of the gallery’s goals is for people to leave the gallery with a deeper understanding of the art,” Korologos says. “I appreciate the past, but have a better feel for living artists. Knowing the artist brings much more dimension to the perception of his or her work.” Artists’ receptions and talks at the gallery throughout the year provide wonderful opportunities for the public to meet them. Visitors to the gallery find contemporary Western art by nationally known masters such as Michael Kessler, Dean Mitchell and Sarah Lamb on view alongside works by regional favorites Terry Gardner,
Leon Loughridge, Jill Soukup, Andy Taylor, Michael Wisner, Dinah Worman and Dan Young. The subject matter ranges from traditional landscape and figural painting to abstraction. In recent years, the gallery’s roster of sculptors has expanded and now includes Neil Clifford, Veryl Goodnight, Gordon Gund, Amy Laugesen, Lloyd Schermer and Immi Storrs. The gallery’s art and literature series has hosted such respected authors as Walter Isaacson, Dr. Ben Carson and Secretary Madeline Albright, among others. And this year it is part of ARTB2F, Art Walk Basalt 2nd Fridays, participating with other galleries in Historic Downtown Basalt to create a celebration of art and culture every second Friday of the month throughout the summer. In summing up her gallery’s mission, Korologos explains, “We bring you the kind of art you love to live with.”
