AUBREE DALLAS/ASPEN TIMES WEEKLY

FROM THE EDITOR

Summer has become the nonstop event season in Snowmass Village. With everything from a Harley rally to a yoga festival to a Tough Mudder run, plus old staples like the free Thursday night concerts and the Labor Day music festival, the nonstop calendar of events is the big theme this season. Check out the highlights on page 6. Snowmass certainly has a lot of other new things happening, too. Those include the display of ice-age fossils discovered in nearby Ziegler Reservoir (page 10), a bowling alley (10), and a new beer program and menu at Viceroy Snowmass’ Nest restaurant (24). In this magazine, we covered a lot of the new stuff. And yet, the beautiful backdrop for all these happenings still beckons. No matter what, you can still get away from it all

The Snowmass Rodeo, which has been operating on the grounds in Town Park since 1973, still takes place every Wednesday.

DAYS &

NIGHTS SNOWMASS RD | SUMMER IN BY JILL BEATHA

Tourism officials in Snowmass Village have been talking about summer 2014 for over a year. It is, after all, their job to talk things up, but looking at the calendar this season, it’s easy to see where they’re coming from. Based on close to two years of effort and a new approach to summer, this year, tourism officials have attempted to enhance continuing events and bring in new ones from across the country. The goal is to bring many of these events back, so if you can’t make it this year, keep an eye out for dates in 2015. Here’s a peek at what’s in store in Snowmass this summer. To see a full calendar of events in Snowmass and beyond, turn to the back of this magazine.

6.13 - 6.15

SNOWMASS MAMMOTH FEST

Now in its second year, the revamped Chili Pepper and Brew Fest is looking to prove itself. With a lineup more focused on folk and rock, including bands such as Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Leftover Salmon and Xavier Rudd, the festival has created quite a buzz this year. Produced by the organizers of Telluride Blues and Brews, Snowmass Mammoth Fest also features a free night of music on the mall to kick off the event.

6.19 - 8.14

THURSDAY NIGHT CONCERT SERIES

The event that is a favorite among Roaring Fork Valley residents as well as visitors is back and offering names such as Grand Funk Railroad and Fishbone. The weekly event is always free, so grab your picnic blankets and baskets (and sometimes a raincoat) and head on out to Fanny Hill. DATE

The yoga festival, which holds events throughout the country, is coming to Snowmass Village over July Fourth weekend. Members of the public can purchase day passes to participate in yoga sessions or music-only tickets to attend paid shows. Wanderlust helped Snowmass book Jurassic 5 to play July 5 in Base Village.

The Deaf Camp Picnic was once the highlight of the summer in the Roaring Fork Valley, powered by musicians such as John Denver, Jimmy Buffett and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Revitalized in 2013, the festival is gaining traction once again, this year featuring Ricky Skaggs as headliner and a John Denver tribute. And, it’s all for a good cause: the picnic has always been a fundraiser for the Aspen Camp for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, located in Old Snowmass.

Billed as “Probably the Toughest Event on the Planet,” Tough Mudder asks participants to traverse a 10 to 12 mile obstacle course designed to test strength, stamina and teamwork. This is Snowmass’ first time to host the challenge, which is held in locations across the country and typically attracts thousands of participants at each of its events.

9.12 - 9.14

BALLOON AND WINE FESTIVALS, FERRARI EXPO

One of the longest running hot-air balloon festivals in the country, the Snowmass event is held right when the trees are starting to show off their fall colors. Event highlights include a race over Highway 82, launches over the Snowmass Club golf course, and a “night glow,” in which pilots light their torches and hover their balloons over Fanny Hill so that attendees can mingle around them. For the past 12, Snowmass Rotary has also held their biggest annual fundraiser, the Snowmass Wine Festival, over the same weekend. The wine event includes a paired dinner and a grand tasting in Town Park, which this year will be held in conjunction with an exposition of Ferrari cars.

When the weather turns bad, you can still have fun. In fact, you may not want to wait for a rainy day for some of these activities. Here are some ideas of things that you can do, rain or shine.

1

ICE AGE DISCOVERY CENTER In 2010, a bulldozer operator working to expand a reservoir in Snowmass Village unearthed the tusk of a young female mammoth. That spurred a digging frenzy over the next 10 months that produced 5,000 bones of various ice-age fossils. Stop in the Ice Age Discovery Center on the Snowmass Village Mall to observe a staff member from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science work on restoring some of the pieces. gosnowmass.com; click on Things to do

The public rec center located at Town Park offers a walk-in rate for use of its state-of-the-art facility, which includes saline outdoor pools, cardio and weight rooms, gymnasium, classes, and climbing and bouldering walls. It also offers day camps for kids that have become very popular. snowmassrecreation.com

4

CREATE The Anderson Ranch Arts Center on Owl Creek Road offers an astounding number of workshops in every medium you can think of, including some just for kids. Most are a week long, but you could also kill a couple of hours just touring the campus. The buildings were relocated to the site from historic ranches in the area, and there’s always someone working on something cool in the studios. andersonranch.org

BOWLING Just in time for last ski season, owner Mark Reece opened up Slopeside Lanes, an eight-lane bowling alley, below Aspen Sports on the Snowmass Village Mall. With a wood-fire pizza oven and a full bar, it’s also not a bad place to grab a bite for dinner. gosnowmass.com; click on Dining

SNOWMASS RD | SUMMER IN BY JILL BEATHA

In Snowmass Village, we share our habitat with that of the wild animals that naturally exist here. You can easily spot a herd of elk on Owl Creek Road, and keep an eye out for fox and birds of prey on your next hike. While it’s exciting to encounter wild animals, they can pose some issues and safety concerns. Hungry bears have been known to break in to houses and cars around the village. A mother and three cubs were photographed multiple times robbing cars parked in residents’ driveways. Not only does a break-in threaten property, but it’s also harmful for the bruins. Nuisance bears are tagged and relocated the first time they cause an issue, and if they are caught returning to that same site,

wildlife officers are required to euthanize them. Some trails around Snowmass Village are closed during certain times of the year to protect the elk that migrate through this area. Be sure to observe any trail closures, as cameras are set up at the trailheads and violators will be fined. In addition, be aware while driving that elk, deer and other creatures often cross the roads in Snowmass and throughout the Roaring Fork Valley.

OBSERVING WILDLIFE

If you happen to encounter a bear out in the wild, heed these suggestions.

Wild animals are a treasure of our community, please help keep them wild.

Stay calm. Walk away, speak softly and try not to show fear.

Never feed wildlife. Intentional or inadvertent feeding is the major cause of problems. Feeding wildlife is illegal, and a citation will be issued.

Step off the trail on the downhill side and slowly leave the area. Although it is not common for a mother with cubs to attack, it is a possibility. Move away slowly from the cub. The mother may make alarming gestures such as kicking dirt, snorting, popping her jaws, or making a “false charge” (stopping short before reaching you). However, if a bear does attack you, fight back. Black bears have been driven away when people have fought back with rocks, sticks, binoculars, and even their bare hands. Contrary to popular myths, bears can run fast (up to 35 mph), and can easily outrun a person up or downhill. They are also agile tree-climbers. Source: Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office

2

Wildlife should not be chased, harassed, captured, or domesticated. Keep all pet food and refuse in a wildlife resistant metal container, or locked within the home or garage. Keep lower level windows and doors locked when you are not home

3

Birdfeeders are a major bear attractant. Feed birds only in winter when bears are hibernating. BRENDA SANDERSON | COURTESY PHOTO

Stop. Give the bear an escape route. Do not make direct eye contact with the bear as he may perceive this as a threat.

Two decades of trail-building have given rise to an extensive, interconnected network of cycling terrain in and around Snowmass Village. It started with the relocation of the Rim Trail, according to The Aspen Times, and in the past four or five years has boomed.

P lay in the dirt

The development of Sky Mountain Park, a joint effort by Pitkin County, Snowmass Village and Aspen, also added to the available terrain, and in 2012 Aspen Skiing Co. added five miles of trails on the Snowmass ski area. Hence, if you want to go mountain biking during your stay, look no further for any skill level and type of terrain.

THE

POWER

BEER OF

“Beer is the great equalizer,” declares Danielle Becker, manager of Nest at Viceroy Snowmass. “Not everyone enjoys wine or wants to drink spirits, but everyone will sit down and have a beer with you. It’s the ‘Cheers’ thing – beer is something pretty much everyone can go into a bar and enjoy.” Yet, at the same time, beer can be just complex as wine or spirits. And this might be what Becker loves the most. “Beer has been around for centuries, and it’s finally getting the respect it deserves,” says Becker, who hopes to attain her Master Cicerone designation this year (see “The Making of a Master,” this page.). “Those water-beers are no longer the standard; craft beers are raising the bar.” At Nest — and breweries, taverns and even fine-dining restaurants across the country — raising the bar means bellying up to the bar for beer tastings and beer pairing dinners. In fact, a recent dinner at Nest featured a selection of Boulder Beers paired with the creative cuisine of Viceroy Snowmass chef Will Nolan. And we’re not talking hot dogs and Budweisers here. The five-course dinner included offerings such as an appetizer of Buffalo Gold and Hazed and Infused beer served with charbroiled oysters, cheese and pork belly coquette and smoked tomato relish, followed by a main dish featuring Mojo Risin’ double IPA alongside Char Siu pork

with kimchee, fried avocado and yuzu vinaigrette. “When you can hold in your hand a beer from an amazing Abbey and pair it with a fine dish, that’s just incredible. It proves it’s not just about the wine,” says Becker, whose long career in the food and beverage industry landed her in the Roaring Fork Valley some four years ago, where she’s now firmly established in her role as beer master at the Viceroy (while raising a 9-year-old and twins, aged 5). In fact, Becker sees a world where beer — and those who are educated in how to brew, taste, serve and enjoy it — is as highly regarded as wine or spirits. “The brewery movement is here; people are embracing it,” she says. “That’s the cool thing...beer can be really delicious — and diverse — and people are beginning to learn that.” Take Nest’s recent Boulder Beer pairing dinner. In just a couple of hours, six styles of beer were served and sampled. They ranged from the well-known Buffalo Gold to the seasonal Never Summer Ale to the rich dessert beer Shake Chocolate Porter.

BEER OF

The evening also included an education in beer and beer making, with a variety of hops, barley and other essentials on the table for diners to investigate. “We’ve definitely seen a change in the craft beer market,” Boulder Beers’ Laura McLane told the assembled guests. “What we have for you tonight is some traditional beers and a few new ones — all paired perfectly with chef Will’s dishes.”

Danielle Becker’s absolute favorite beer? Porter, but there are so many I could never name a specific one. Just give me a nice, good porter and I’m happy.

Indeed it was like a winemaker’s dinner. But, like beer itself, a bit more casual. A bit more fun. “Speaking personally, I love that my passion for beer can also be my career,” says Becker. “The beer crowd is a fun crowd, so how could I not love what I do?” Moving forward, what Becker does — and what Viceroy Snowmass will do for beer lovers everywhere — will include a variety of beer-centric events, from pairing dinners to beer training courses to entire weekends dedicated to the suds. “Viceroy has always had a great mixology program, but now whatever your angle, you can find it,” says Becker. “I’m just glad that my hobby is something worth sharing, something others want to enjoy with me.”

THE MAKING OF A MASTER Everyone knows — and admires — the sommelier. That master of wine who knows exactly which wine to pour with each course; that person who knows just what you’re seeking when you say, “crisp” or “dry,” “fruity” or “earthy.” But what about beer? Who knows which beer to pair with, say, confit of prime ribeye cap, lobster poutine and debris gravy? The Master Cicerone, that’s who. (And the answer, by the way, is Boulder Beer’s Never Summer winter ale.) So what is a Master Cicerone? According to the Craft Beer Institute, Cicerone is an English word referring to “one who conducts visitors and sightseers to museums and explains matters of archaeological, antiquarian, historic or artistic interest.” A Certified (one level below a Master) or Master Cicerone is a person who “possesses the knowledge and skills to guide those interested in beer culture, including its historic and artistic aspects. These titles now designate a person with demonstrated expertise in beer who can guide consumers to enjoyable and high-quality experiences with great beer.” A Master Cicerone is, in a nutshell, what Danielle Becker sees herself as in just a few short months. “I’ve been in the food and beverage business so long that I have thought about becoming a sommelier or going further with spirits,” says Becker, manager of Nest at Viceroy Snowmass, who has hopes of achieving her Master Cicerone designation by year’s end. “But once I found out about the Cicerone program, I knew that was for me; I love beer,” she says. “And it’s a challenge; there are more than 70 different styles of beer and you have to know everything about them all, do blind tastings and so forth. It’s not easy.” Indeed. According to cicerone.org, there are currently only six Master Cicerones in the United States. Becker hopes to be lucky No. 7. “I am excited about the future,” she says.
