In the act establishing the University of Oklahoma, approved by the first legislature of the Territory of Oklahoma, December 19, 1890, one of the purposes stated was for the university to provide the means of acquiring a thorough knowledge of the theory and art of teaching. This mandate led to the establishment of the School of Teaching, which by 1929 had evolved into the College of Education. The college is a professional school whose mission includes the preparation of qualified personnel for the public schools, research to improve education, and the provision of educational services to the public.

Today’s Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education offers undergraduate programs leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education. The college, through the Graduate College, offers graduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Education, Doctor of Education and Doctor of Philosophy. Major fields of study include instructional leadership and academic curriculum (biomedical education, early childhood, elementary, English, mathematics, reading, science, secondary education, social studies, world language); educational leadership and policy studies (adult and higher education, educational administration, curriculum and supervision, educational studies); and educational psychology (professional counseling, instructional psychology and technology, learning science, special education). All of the college’s teacher certification programs are fully accredited by CAEP. Education graduates wear light blue tassels.
