Chippewa Nickname

The Central Michigan University Board of Trustees has approved

the continued use of the nickname “Chippewas” in association with CMU. The university’s goals are to use the name with honor and respect, increase supportive connections between CMU and Native Americans and improve efforts to sensitize students, faculty and staff to Native American traditions and cultures.

Media representatives have been extremely cooperative as we

have worked to address this important issue. In nearly all cases, print and broadcast reporters have supported CMU’s efforts to eliminate the use of symbols, headlines and copy that present inappropriate and inaccurate images of Native Americans.

Central Michigan University is grateful for your help, and we ask

for your continued cooperation and sensitivity. With your assistance, we can continue to use the Chippewa name with dignity and respect. Preseason Notes Pilling Named AllAmerican — In his junior season, Greg Pilling became the 28th male to earn All-America honors in the Central Michigan track and field program’s history. Pilling capped the outdoor season with an eighthplace finish in the discus (183-4) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. The London, Ont., native broke the school record with a throw of 197-2 in a runner-up finish at the NCAA Mideast Regional to qualify for the national meet. Schroll Wins Two MAC Titles — Senior Erika Schroll looks to defend her Mid-American Conference titles in 2010. The junior won the high jump at both the 2009 MAC Indoor (5-7 3/4) and Outdoor (5-8 3/4) Championships. The Union, Mich., native also narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, falling just short in a jumpoff at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Schroll is the first CMU female to win the high jump 4

at both the indoor and outdoor conference meets since Jackie Bozin did so in 2004. All-MAC Athletes Return — The Chippewas return all but one of their all-MidAmerican Conference performers from a year ago, including MAC champions Greg Pilling (outdoor discus), Erika Schroll (indoor and outdoor high jump) and Riak Mabil (indoor 5000m). In addition to that trio, second-team all-MAC selections David Ashcraft (indoor and outdoor 400m) and Jacob Korir (indoor 5000m) return to the fold this season. The men’s cross country team will enjoy the returns of all-MAC firstteamer Sammy Kiprotich along with Mabil, a second-team pick last fall. Track and Field/Cross Country Programs Excel in the Classroom — Both the men’s and women’s track and field and cross country programs succeeded in the classroom. The men

led the MAC in academic all-MAC selections during both the indoor (four) and outdoor (five) track and field seasons while the women placed three student-athletes on the indoor academic squad and four more outdoors. The men’s and women’s cross country programs each had two academic all-MAC selections last fall. Cross Country Aiming High — The CMU cross country program hopes to take the next step in 2009. Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams took fourth at the MAC Championships last fall. The men return AllMAC selections Sammy Kiprotich (first-team) and Riak Mabil (secondteam) to the mix while the women’s top finisher at regionals, Melissa Darling, headlines the women’s returners.

Willie Randolph

Director of Track and Field/Cross Country First Season

On May 7, 2009, Willie Randolph was hired as Central Michigan’s first director of men’s and women’s track and field/cross country. Randolph, a CMU graduate and former track and field student-athlete, will oversee the Chippewas’ men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field programs. “We are excited to bring Willie aboard to lead our men’s and women’s track and cross country programs in this new direction,” CMU Director of Athletics Dave Heeke said. “As a Chippewa letterwinner, Willie brings a passion and enthusiasm for Central Michigan that will play a key role in maintaining the championship level of performance we have achieved over the past decade. I also feel his experience will be an important component in building a successful combined program.” Randolph comes to CMU from the University of Louisville. He worked directly with sprinters and hurdlers at Louisville and was part of a coaching staff that worked under the combined program model that will be employed at CMU. “I feel blessed and honored to be able to return to my alma mater,” Randolph said. “Although I know there are challenges that lie ahead, I am confident that my staff and I will take this program to the next level of excellence.” Randolph was part of a coaching staff that enjoyed a significant amount of success at Louisville. Last season, the Cardinals’ women’s team won its second straight Big East Conference Outdoor Championships title, while the men finished in second place, just one-half point behind champion Notre Dame. It marked the second straight runner-up finish for the Louisville men outdoors. The coaching staff was named Big East Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year for the second consecutive season. Louisville’s men’s squad captured the Big East outdoor title in 2007, while the women’s team finished runner-up. The coaching staff was named Big East Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year in 2007. Randolph coached 10 All-Big East performers, six NCAA provisional qualifiers and eight NCAA Mideast Regional qualifiers while at Louisville, and the sprinters and hurdlers set 15 school records under his tutelage. Some of his most noteworthy performers included Big East indoor (23.98) and outdoor (23.56) 200m champion Elisabeth Slettum, twotime Big East champion Heather Trimiew (400m indoors: 55.96; 400m hurdles outdoors: 58.45) and 100m school-record holders Saravia Richardson (11.59) and Edmond Yeboah (10.39).

Off the track, Randolph worked closely with the school’s academic program and was instrumental in guiding the women’s track and field team to the all-academic team recognition it received from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in 2007, when the Cardinals’ 3.41 team grade-point average ranked 17th nationally. The USTFCCCA named eight Cardinals to its all-academic team in 2009. In 2008, seven Louisville student-athletes were named to the all-academic team, and the Cardinals also swept the Big East Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence awards for men’s and women’s track and field. The awards are given to one student-athlete in each conference sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Prior to his stop in Louisville, Randolph oversaw a combined program as the head men’s and women’s track and field coach and head cross country coach at the University of New Orleans. In three seasons at UNO, Randolph coached 10 NCAA regional qualifiers, 30 All-Sun Belt Conference performers, 10 Sun Belt Conference Track and Field champions, 15 Academic All-Sun Belt selections and an individual cross country Sun Belt champion. UNO broke 56 school records, including two Sun Belt Conference records, under his guidance. Randolph served as an assistant coach for the cross country and men’s and women’s track and field teams at Vanderbilt University for two years before his stop in New Orleans. He was also the recruiting coordinator at Vanderbilt. Randolph worked directly with two-time All-America heptathlete Josie Hahn, and the hurdlers and middle distance runners he coached broke 12 school records in his two seasons. Randolph’s collegiate coaching career began at Belmont University in 1999. He spent four seasons with the Bruins and coached one NCAA national qualifier, one Junior National Championships qualifier and three Atlantic Sun Conference champions. Randolph also mentored 14 student-athletes who earned academic all-conference honors. During his time at Belmont, Randolph also founded and coached the Nashville Elite Track Club. He was named USA Track and Field Club Coach of the Year after guiding his squad to a 2001 USA Track and Field Club national championship. Randolph helped coach Jeremy Taylor to a top-10 world ranking in the 200m in 2001, and another of his club athletes, Xavier James, advanced to the semifinals in the 100m at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Randolph is a USATF Level I and II certified coach in jumps, sprints and hurdles. He also is a USATF certified meet official. Randolph, a native of Saginaw, Mich. and graduate of Carrollton High School, earned a bachelor of applied arts degree in organizational and public communications from CMU in 1998. He was a two-year letterman in the Chippewas’ track and field program as a hurdler.

Dionne Henley Assistant Coach First Season

Dionne Henley joins Willie Randolph’s coaching staff after spending the past two seasons at Tennessee State University. She will coach the long sprints and relays for Randolph’s combined men’s and women’s track and field program. TSU experienced immediate success with Henley on the staff, capturing the Ohio Valley Conference indoor championship in her first season with the Tigerbelles in 2008. Prior to her stint with TSU, Henley served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Middle Tennessee State University, under hall of fame coach Dean Hayes for two seasons. She worked primarily with the sprints, hurdles and jumps. In her time at MTSU, the Raiders won three Sun Belt Conference titles and she trained four All-Americans. Henley was one of MTSU’s most accomplished athletes. She became the Blue Raiders’ first individual national champion in 1994, claiming the title in the indoor 55m high hurdles. Henley earned All-America honors in four events that season — the 55m hurdles and long jump indoors along with the 100m hurdles and long jump outdoors. She was named the Ohio Valley Conference Track Woman of the Year that season. Henley set six school records in her time at MTSU. The Kingston, Jamaica native brings a great deal of international experience to the table. She is a two-time Olympian who represented Jamaica in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and donned her country’s colors once more in the ’96 games in Atlanta. Henley reached the semi-finals at the 1992 Olympic Games. In the 100 meter hurdles, she placed fifth at the 1995 World Championship, fifth at the 1996 Olympic Games, sixth at the 1997 World Championship, fourth at the 1998 World Cup, sixth at the 1999 World Championship and sixth at the 2001 World Championship. “Dionne is an exciting addition to our program,” Randolph said. “She brings a lot of experience at both the collegiate and international level. Having a two-time Olympian like her on the staff brings instant credibility at the highest level to our program.” In addition to her accomplishments in the Olympic Games and World Championships, Henley also placed fifth at the Goodwill games in 2001 before finishing first at the Caribbean Games in 2002. Henley graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a bachelor’s degree in Leisure and Recreation in 2005.

Assistant Coach Third Season

Matt Kaczor returns for his third season on the Central Michigan University track and field/cross country staff and his first under new director of track and field/cross country Willie Randolph. His duties include coaching the distance and middle distance units in track and field and leading the men’s and women’s cross country teams. Kaczor served as an assistant coach the past two seasons under three-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year Jim Knapp. He replaced long-time assistant track and field and head cross country coach Craig Fuller on the coaching staff after Fuller announced his retirement from coaching, effective Jan. 18, 2008. Kaczor worked closely with the men’s cross country team last season, guiding the Chippewas to a fourth-place finish at the MAC Championships. Sammy Kiprotich was a first team All-MAC performer while Riak Mabil earned second team All-MAC honors last season. Kaczor competed for the Chippewas in both track and cross country from 2001-04, and was part of three MAC cross country championship teams, in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and was a member of the 2003 outdoor track team that captured the program’s first MAC title. He served as captain of the cross country squad in 2004. “Matt is a great addition to the staff,” Randolph said. “He is familiar with the program and being a CMU alum will be a great help to us. He has had success working with cross country since Craig Fuller retired. He is a young and talented coach who I expect to be very successful with our men’s and women’s cross country teams as well as our distance runners on the track.” After graduating from CMU with a degree in secondary education and history in May of 2005, Kaczor began his coaching career at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., serving as an assistant coach for OU’s cross country and track and field teams. He coached two allconference performers in the 3000m steeplechase while at Oakland. John Ridgway comes to Central Michigan for his first season after spending the outdoor track and field season serving as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma. He will be responsible for coaching the throwers on director of track and field/cross country Willie Randolph’s staff. Prior to his stint at Oklahoma, Ridgway served as an assistant coach for the throws and horizontal jumps at the University of Central Florida. He coached five NCAA Regional qualifiers and two USA Track and Field Junior National qualifiers. UCF throwers broke three school records under his guidance. Before his tenure at UCF, Ridgway spent two seasons at the University of Louisiana-Monroe coaching the throws and horizontal jumps. He led four student-athletes to indoor all-conference honors and had three athletes qualify for junior nationals in his first season. In his final season at ULM, Ridgway coached four regional qualifiers, three conference champions, two conference runnersup and one junior national qualifier. Ridgway’s coaching career began at Oklahoma Baptist University where he coached the throws. In 2005, the OBU women won the NAIA Indoor Championship and finished runner-up outdoors. He also coached two-time All-American Jeremiah Campo, who was the school’s first All-American thrower in 10 years. Ridgway competed collegiately at Oklahoma, where he lettered twice and was named the program’s outstanding walk-on following the 1999 season. He then transferred to the University of North Carolina, where he lettered two more times and earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in both 2000 and 2001. “John will help continue our strong tradition of throwers at the conference level,” Randolph said. “He has experience developing athletes at all levels and we look forward to having him here. He has a chance to make an immediate impact on our program. His ability to recruit and develop athletes speaks for itself.” A USATF Level 2 certified coach; Ridgway graduated from UNC in August 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

Assistant Coach First Season

Glenn Smith enters his first season as an assistant coach at Central Michigan. His responsibilities include the jumps and multi-events for the Chippewas. Smith spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Tulane where he was responsible for the Green Wave’s jumps, throws and multi-events. Under his tutelage, five Tulane student-athletes qualified for NCAA regionals and two school records were set (hammer throw and weight throw). Prior to his stint at Tulane, Smith spent one season as an assistant coach at Neosho County Community College where he guided the sprints, hurdles, jumps and multi-events. He was part of a dramatic one-year turnaround in which the women’s team improved from eighth in the conference to fourth and the men jumped from seventh to third. Both teams made noise nationally as the women’s and men’s squads finished 15th and 18th in the country, respectively. On an indvidual level, Smith coached six conference champions and five NJCAA All-Americans in his season at Neosho. “Coach Smith is a multi-talented jumps coach that we are pleased to have on our staff,” director of track and field/cross country Willie Randolph said. “With his professional running experience and coaching ability we expect him to have an immediate impact in the jumps and multi-events at the conference, regional and national level.” Smith was an elite athlete on an international level during his 14-year career. He represented Canada in international competition six times in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. In 1999, Smith finished 13th in the 200m at the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Track and Field Championships in Sevilla, Spain. That year he was also the Canadian champion in the 200m and received the Fred Tees Memorial Award for outstanding athlete enrolled in a Canadian University. Smith received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Calgary in May 2002 and earned his master’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Texas in May 2005.
