Preseason Notes a freshman outfielder, joins Brittini on this year’s squad. The duo continues a long family tradition of athletic achievement. Brittini was a second-team All-MAC and a MAC All-Freshman Team selection in 2008. The pair’s have two older sisters who each played collegiate softball. Debbie played for Ferris State and Jessica was an All-American on Michigan’s national championship team in 2005.

Powering Up — Senior outfielder Christina Novak enters the 2010 season in range of the Chippewas’ career home run record. Novak has gone yard 11 times in her career (tied for eighth all-time), five shy of the school record held by three players. The Rockford, Mich., native belted a careerhigh five homers in 2009.

Chippewas Nearing Milestones — The Central Michigan softball program enters its 32nd season within reach of 1,000 wins. The Chippewas sport a 994-585-5 all-time record. Margo Jonker is in her 31st year at the helm of the program and owns a 979-5805 mark. Jonker has guided the Chippewas to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and won 11 MAC titles.

All in the Family — Junior infielder Brittini Merchant will be joined by a familiar face this spring. Her sister Macy,

a solid 2009 campaign. The West Bloomfield, Mich., native was a MAC All-Freshman Team pick last season. She finished with a team-high .371 onbase percentage, .427 slugging percentage and 18 walks while scoring 16 runs (second on CMU), driving in 16 more (third) and cracking three home runs (tied for second). Consistent Production — Katie Greenman was one of CMU’s most consistent offensive forces last season. In 2009, Greenman finished second on the team with a .288 average, .361 onbase percentage, .417 slugging percentage, 18 RBIs and three home runs. She showcased good strike zone judgment, posting nearly as many walks (11) as strikeouts (12), the best ratio among all Chippewa batters.

Feeling Fine — The Chippewas welcome back Kari Seddon’s talent both in the circle and at the plate in 2010. Seddon missed the entire 2009 campaign due to an elbow injury, but was a first-team All-MAC selection in 2008. That season, she led CMU with a 10-9 record, 1.91 ERA and 117 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .220 batting average. She also batted .259 with 12 RBIs at the dish.

Margo Jonker Head Coach 31st Season

Longevity is rare in college coaching today. However, Central Michigan University softball coach Margo Jonker’s career is the definition of longevity. In her first 30 years at the helm of the Central Michigan University softball program, Jonker has built a program that consistently challenges for the Mid-American Conference title while also competing on a national level. The Chippewas have made 13 trips to the NCAA tournament, have captured the most MAC titles in conference history with 11 and claim one visit each to the NCAA Women’s College World Series and the AIAW National Championship. Over her career, the Chippewas are 979-580-5 (.628 winning percentage) and her 979 wins rank 10th all-time in NCAA Division I history. CMU honored Jonker during the 2008 season by renaming the Chippewas’ facility Margo Jonker Stadium on April 19. A respected member of the coaching ranks, Jonker has been inducted into four halls of fame. Her most recent induction, into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2003, is one of the highest honors she could achieve as only 47 college coaches are enshrined. Jonker also is a member of the Grand Valley State University Hall of Fame (1990), the Michigan Amateur Softball Hall of the Fame (2000), and the West Ottawa High School Hall of Fame (2001). Not only has the Chippewa mentor won on the collegiate level, but in the fall of 2000 she served as an assistant coach on the United States Olympic softball team that captured the gold medal in Sydney, Australia. Jonker was involved with USA Softball’s top international teams for several years. In the summer of 1998, she served as an assistant coach for the USA World Championship team that won its fourth consecutive gold medal in Fujinomiya, Japan. In 1997, she was an assistant for the Superball Tournament held at Columbus, Georgia, and the softball National Team Festival held at Midland, Mich.. She joined head coach Ralph Raymond and assistant coach Shirley Topley on the 2000 Olympic staff. The Holland, Mich., native has collected numerous honors, including NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year accolades in 1987. That season, she led CMU to MAC and Mideast Regional crowns and a fifth-place finish at the College World Series. It was the highest finish for a Chippewa team since an AIAW fourth-place effort in 1982. Nine times Jonker has been honored as MAC Coach of the Year (1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1991, 1994, 1996, 1997 and 2002). She was selected as the NCAA Mideast Region Coach of the Year in 1987 and Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year in 1994 and 2000.

Jonker joined the CMU athletics department in 1979-80, taking the softball reins in 1980. She succeeded Marion Russell, a graduate assistant who guided the team in the inaugural 1979 campaign. When Jonker arrived at CMU, she was assistant volleyball coach in addition to her softball duties. CMU has dominated in MAC action, leading the conference in all-time wins, winning percentage, regular season championships, and conference tournament titles. In fact, CMU has won the MAC Tournament nine of the 18 years it has been completed. CMU won MAC championships in 1982, 1983, 1986, 1987, 1991, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2004 and MAC Tournament titles in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 under Jonker. CMU received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2004 after winning the MAC championship with a 21-3 record but falling out of the MAC Tournament. In Jonker’s third season (1982), the Chippewas won a school-record 51 games and captured their first MAC title. The squad advanced to the AIAW National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., where CMU finished fourth with a 4-2 record. CMU won back-to-back conference titles in 1986 and 1987, and the 1987 team won the NCAA Mideast Region with a pair of victories over Northwestern. That put the Chippewas in the NCAA Women’s College World Series in Omaha, Neb., where CMU went 1-2 to place fifth. The Chippewas also came close to advancing to the World Series again in 1997 when CMU forced Michigan to a second championship game in the regional in Ann Arbor. The Maroon and Gold made four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history from 19992002. The 2002 squad set a MAC record by going 23-1 in conference play for a .958 winning percentage. Impressively, CMU lost its first MAC game of the season and then rattled off 23 straight victories. The 2004 season started out with a bang as the Chippewas defeated two highly ranked foes in No. 5 Oklahoma (3-2) and No. 4 Washington (1-0) in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. CMU went on to win the MAC regular season title, and those two victories helped CMU earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. In 2005, CMU defeated No. 1-ranked and eventual national champion Michigan, 5-4, in the first game of a doubleheader at the CMU Softball Complex on April 6. Jonker has developed several outstanding individual talents. The list includes eight All-America selections — three-time honoree Pam Stanley and two-time pick Beth Bull, along with Cathy Heator, Linda Pagett, and Kris Tipmore. CMU has had three Academic All-Americans under Jonker — second-team pick Jen Skuta in 2002, and third-team selections Jeanette Schrand in 1991 and Nicole Weston in 2000. The Chippewa mentor has coached 30 first-team all-region players, 42 academic all-conference first-team picks, and 72 All-MAC first-team selections. A Chippewa has earned MAC Player of the Year honors six times under Jonker, along with two MAC Pitcher of the Year award winners. Five Chippewas have also earned MAC Freshman of the Year laurels. Jonker earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from Grand Valley State in 1976 and was named GVSC’s Female Athlete of the Year that same year. She remained at GVSC from 1977-79 as a pitching coach while serving as West Ottawa High School’s softball coach in 1978-79. She also served as Hope College’s volleyball coach from 1976-78. Jonker earned her master’s degree in athletic administration from CMU in 1981.

Sami Baugh Assistant Coach Third Season

Sami Baugh’s hard work has earned her the top assistant coach position at Central Michigan University after two seasons as a graduate assistant coach. Baugh’s duties with CMU include working with the catchers, hitting, assisting in recruiting, away game management and organizing clinics. Baugh was a four-year letterwinner at Iowa (2004-07), playing for one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history, Gayle Blevins. “Coach Baugh brings a passion for the game with her to our program ,” head coach Margo Jonker said. “I am excited to have her on board as our assistant. She has an excellent professional rapport with our student-athletes and our staff at Central Michigan. Sami knows how to expound her knowledge of the softball to our players. Her organizational skills help both on the field and in the office.” Baugh hit .239 for her career while starting 171 games for the Hawkeyes. She tallied 19 doubles, eight homers and 88 RBI during her career. As a sophomore, she batted a career-best .271 with six homers and 21 RBI. Baugh was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten Selection and an NFCA Scholar-Athlete Team pick. She graduated from Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in health and sports studies/communications and earned a master’s degree from Central Michigan in sport administration. A native of Johnston, Iowa, she attended Dowling Catholic High School where she was named Iowa Player of the Year as a sophomore. Sami served as an assistant coach at Des Moines East High School from 2004 to 2006 and the head junior varsity coach at Iowa City High School in 2007.

Colleen Powers Assistant Coach First Season

Colleen Powers joins the Central Michigan softball staff as a graduate assistant coach after spending the past season at West Texas A&M in the same capacity. Powers’ responsibilities at CMU include working with the outfielders, coaching the slap hitters, base running and home game management. “Colleen’s love for the game and coaching is evident with the energy she displays,” head coach Margo Jonker said. “She has transitioned well to the role of an assistant in our program learning the Chippewa way. Her attention to detail will pay off for the betterment of our program.” During the 2009 campaign at West Texas A&M, Powers mentored the hitters, infielders and outfielders. The squad finished the season with a conference-best .339 batting average and the team earned its first national ranking since the program resumed play in 2006. She also assisted in recruiting. Powers competed collegiately for the University of Minnesota (2005-08), where she played the outfield and second base. She was one of the Golden Gophers’ team captains and their starting right fielder in 2007 and 2008. She was an Academic All-Big Ten selection three times in her time at Minnesota. Powers was also a twotime recipient of the Severson Coaches Award for outstanding dedication to the program in 2006 and 2007. A Minnetonka, Minn., native, Powers earned eight varsity letters at Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School. She was an all-conference selection in softball her junior year She graduated from Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2008.

AIAW History The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), formed in 1971, was the governing body for women’s athletics, the counterpart to the men’s National Collegiate Athletic Association. The AIAW provided a governing body for initiating and maintaining standards in women’s intercollegiate athletic programs. In addition, the AIAW conducted 11 national championships. They included badminton, basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. The AIAW continued to guide national championships and implement the use of policies established by AIAW at the national level. Fran Koenig, former coach and Women’s Athletic Director for Central Michigan University, played a huge role in the AIAW and in the history of athletics for women at CMU and nationally. The AIAW sponsored the first National Softball Championship in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. CMU’s softball team played in the AIAW Championship in 1982 and finished fourth. That was the first year the NCAA also sponsored a national championship for women in softball. Institutions chose which national championship to attend. Fran Koenig In June 1982, the AIAW suspended operations after filing a lawsuit against the NCAA. The courts ruled against the AIAW and said the NCAA had not violated the Sherman Antitrust Act. Therefore, 1982 was the last year the AIAW sponsored championships. This was our beginning. This is a part of the history of CMU women’s athletics and Chippewa softball.

The award began in 1998 as a memorial to former player Beth Pawlak who was killed in an automobile crash during the winter of her junior season. Interviews All coach and player interviews must be arranged through SID Assistant Chad Twaro at least 24 hours in advance. There will be no player interviews on game day prior to first pitch. Players and coaches are generally available following practice during the week, or by appointment if necessary. CMU practices are generally closed to outside parties unless arrangements are made in advance. Radio and television crews are asked to complete any pregame interviews with head coach Margo Jonker prior to two hours before first pitch. Visiting Radio Two telephone lines are available for use by the official radio network of the visiting team. Visiting networks that wish to have additional lines installed, at their own expense, may do so by contacting CMU Telecommunications at 989-774-1474.

Credentials Requests for credentials to cover CMU home softball games should be mailed or faxed on company letterhead to
