The university’s goals are to use the name with honor and respect, increase supportive connections between CMU and Native Americans and improve efforts to sensitize students, faculty and staff to Native American traditions and cultures. Media representatives have been extremely cooperative as we have worked to address this important issue. In nearly all cases, print and broadcast reporters have supported CMU’s efforts to eliminate the use of symbols, headlines and copy that present inappropriate and inaccurate images of Native Americans. Central Michigan University is grateful for your help, and we ask for your continued cooperation and sensitivity. Preseason Notes
Anagnost Named MAC Coach of the Year – Central Michigan head coach Tom Anagnost was named the Mid-American Conference’s Coach of the Year for his performance on the sideline. Anagnost served as acting head coach at the beginning of MAC play on Sept. 26 when Tony DiTucci went on leave and was officially named head coach after DiTucci resigned on Oct. 15. Under Anagnost, the Chippewas went 7-3-3 and advanced to the MAC Tournament semifinals. Anagnost is the first CMU soccer coach to receive the award. Six Chippewas Named All-MAC – A number of players contributed to CMU’s breakthrough 2008 campaign, and a good amount of them received recognition for their
efforts. A school-record six Chippewas received All-MAC honors. Juniors Amanda Waugh and Stephanie Martin were each named first team All-MAC. Senior Sarah Burns, sophomore Shay Mannino and freshman Liesel Toth each received second team accolades. Toth was also named to the MAC AllFreshmen team along with teammate Claire Horton, the first time CMU has had two players on the All-Freshmen team. Among the Best – CMU was anchored by a strong defense all season long. The Chippewas allowed only 13 goals last season, the fewest they have ever yielded in a season. Out of 310 division one school’s, the squad’s 0.63 goals-against average ranked 18th in the country at the end of the MAC Tournament. There were never any lulls with the defensive unit, Central allowed one goal or less in 17 of its 20 contests. The most goals the Chippewas gave up in any match this season was two, which happened on only three occasions. Martin’s Legacy – After completing her junior campaign, Stephanie Martin
finds her name all over the CMU record books. Martin scored her 25th career goal on Oct. 30 against Eastern Michigan to become the school’s career leader. She has 64 points in her career, which is only one shy of Jacquie Lacek’s record of 65. Record Setting Goalkeeping – As a sophomore, Shay Mannino has established herself as one of the best goalkeepers the school has ever had. Mannino’s 0.63 goals-against average this season (23rd among all NCAA goalies) shattered the school’s previous record (0.88). She also broke the single-season record for shutouts (10) while finishing second in wins (12). Chippewas Boast Top GPA in the Nation for Fourth Straight Year – In addition to CMU’s stellar play on the field, the Chippewas also excel at an unparalleled level in the classroom. The soccer team’s 3.70 cumulative grade-point average was the best of any NCAA soccer program in the country. It is the fourth straight year that CMU has boasted the top GPA in the country.

Tom Anagnost Head Coach Second Season
Tom Anagnost enters his second season as the head women’s soccer coach at Central Michigan University. After being named interim head coach on Oct. 15, 2008, Anagnost was announced as the CMU soccer program’s third head coach on Jan. 20, 2009. Anagnost took over as interim head coach seven matches into the 2008 campaign after beginning his second season as an assistant coach. The Maroon and Gold experienced a breakthrough season under Anagnost, finishing second in the Mid-American Conference, the second time in program history the team has finished higher than third. CMU began league play with a seven-match unbeaten streak, the longest in school history, and posted a 6-2-3 mark in the MAC. The streak began with a 3-0 win over Ball State, the soccer program’s 100th all-time victory. Central also earned its first postseason victory since 2005 when it defeated Ball State again, 1-0, in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals. Anagnost was named MAC Coach of the Year following Central’s 12-5-3 season, the third-highest win total in the program’s history. After missing the conference tournament in 2007, the team’s 2008 turnaround was the nation’s 22nd-largest improvement according to Somis Sports. In 2008, CMU posted the lowest goals-against average in the MAC and finished fourth in the league in scoring. The squad’s 0.63 goals against average was the lowest in program history and the 18th-best figure among all NCAA Division I programs. The Chippewas also posted a school-record 10 shutouts (second most in the MAC). Central’s offensive attack featured two players in the top four in scoring and two of the top four point producers in the conference. Amanda Waugh and Stephanie Martin each earned first-team All-MAC honors after finishing second and fourth, respectively, in goals and points. In addition to the conference accolades, Martin was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas AllGreat Lakes region team. Three more Chippewas earned second-team AllMAC honors, led by goalkeeper Shay Mannino. Mannino was between the pipes every second last season and posted 10 shutouts and a 0.63 goals against average that ranked 23rd among all NCAA keepers. Defenders Sarah Burns and Liesel Toth were recognized for their shutdown play as they joined Mannino on the postseason squad. Toth was also named to the MAC All-Freshman team along with fellow CMU defender Claire Horton. The honors did not end in the regular season as Valerie Prause and Kristen Pelkki were each placed on the MAC All-Tournament team after helping the Chippewas advance to the semifinal round. The soccer program maintained its excellence in the classroom under Anagnost as the Chippewas finished with the top grade-point average in the nation for the fourth straight season. CMU was also represented by four student-athletes on the Academic All-MAC squad while three players received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors. The program also received the Dick Enberg Team Leadership Award,
