Chippewa Nickname The Central Michigan University Board of Trustees has approved the continued use of the nickname “Chippewas” in association with CMU. The university’s goals are to use the name with honor and respect, increase supportive connections between CMU and Native Americans and improve efforts to sensitize students, faculty and staff to Native American traditions and cultures. Media representatives have been extremely cooperative as we have worked to address this important issue. In nearly all cases, print and broadcast reporters have supported CMU’s efforts to eliminate the use of symbols, headlines and copy that present inappropriate and inaccurate images of Native Americans. Central Michigan University is grateful for your help, and we ask for your continued cooperation and sensitivity. With your assistance, we can continue to use the Chippewa name with dignity and respect. Preseason Notes
Teubner Named MAC Freshman of the Year — Kristin Teubner looks to improve upon a freshman campaign that saw her earn several conference honors. The Denver, Colo., native was named MAC Freshman of the Year and also earned first-team All-MAC honors by sharing the floor title with teammate Katie Simon at the MAC Championships. Instant Impact — Teubner’s MAC Freshman of the Year award last season continues an impressive streak for the gymnastics program. The Chippewas have boasted the MAC Freshman of the Year in each of the past three seasons. Katie Simon took
home the honor in 2007 and Andrea de la Garza won the award in 2008 Chippewas Compete at Regionals — CMU earned a 2009 NCAA Regional bid as a team with a regional qualifying score of 194.825. The appearance marked the sixth time the Chippewas have competed as a unit at the regional meet (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005). Central took fourth at the Northeast Regional with 194.925 points, the third-best score the team put up in 2009. The Maroon and Gold’s performance at the regional meet helped them finish 23rd in the final rankings. Reighard Earns MAC Honors — CMU head coach Jerry Reighard was named MAC Co-Coach of the Year after guiding the Chippewas to a 19-7 record and a second-place finish in the MAC Championships in 2009. It was the seventh time that Reighard has earned coach of the year in his 25-year career. Just Missed — The Chippewas nearly added a MAC title to their list of 2009 accomplishments. CMU finished second at the MAC Championships, just 0.125 points behind Kent State. CMU posted a season-best 49.150 on the
vault in its comeback bid on the final event. Championship Culture — The CMU Gymnastics program has been a perennial MAC contender under head coach Jerry Reighard. The Chippewas have won 10 MAC titles since 1990, the most by any MAC team in that span. Central has finished either first or second at the MAC Championships in 17 of the last 21 seasons and have never finished any lower than third. Central has finished with a winning overall record in 21 of the past 23 seasons. National Stage — The Chippewas have shined in the national spotlight in their history, CMU finished in a second-place tie at the NCAA Central Regional in 2003, narrowly missing a berth in the NCAA Championships on a tiebreaker that season. The Maroon and Gold’s performance earned Jerry Reighard NCAA Regional Coach of the Year honors that season. Central achieved its highest national ranking in program history in 2005 with a No. 12 ranking. In addition to the regional appearances, the gymnastics program has won the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) twice — in 1998 and 2000. Reighard 3

Simon Takes Four Events — Katie Simon returns for her senior season after having an outstanding junior season. The Bristol, Wis., native was a first-team All-MAC selection in 2009 after winning four events at the MAC Championships. Simon won the vault (9.950) and all-around (39.350) while sharing the crown in the bars (9.850) and floor (9.850). She is the first athlete in the history of the program to win four titles at the conference championships and only the second gymnast in MAC history to accomplish the feat.

CMU won MAC titles in 1990, ’91, ’92, ’93, ’95, ’98, ’99, 2000, ’03, and ’04 while Reighard racked up coaching honors in 1988, ’90, ’95, ’98, 2004, ’05 and ’09. The Chippewas also swept through all of their MAC regular season dual meets in 2005 for the third consecutive year. It was the seventh time they accomplished that feat under Reighard. Their conference dual meet winning streak reached 27 straight at the end of 2005. In 2004, the Chippewas won their 10th MAC title under Reighard. CMU sent two all-arounders, Sara Burtinsky and Kara Reighard, to the NCAA Regionals with Burtinsky advancing to the NCAA Championships. The Chippewas dominated the 2004 MAC Championship meet, sweeping the individual events and scoring a school and conference record-breaking 197.525. The 2003 squad finished with a 30-6-1 record and was undefeated, 12-0, in conference action. The team broke numerous school and MAC records and had its best NCAA finish ever. CMU posted its highest finish in the regional meet, finishing in a tie for second and missing out on a bid to the NCAA Championships after losing a tie-breaker with Auburn. Three gymnasts adavanced to the NCAA Championships that season. Reighard has compiled a 366-193-3 dual meet record and a 167-48 MAC record during his coaching career. His MAC record is the best in conference history. In the process, Reighard has developed several outstanding individual talents. The list includes 47 MAC individual champions, 18 first-team Academic All-MAC picks, 17 NCAA regional qualifiers, three NCAA regional champions, and six NCAA Championships qualifiers. He has also had five MAC Senior Gymnasts of the Year, two MAC Gymnasts of the Year and four conference Freshmen of the Year. Reighard also has stressed academics during his tenure. His squads have been ranked in the top 20 in the nation for team grade point average seven times. The Chippewas were ranked sixth in 1997, seventh in 1998 and sixth in 1999. Reighard has been a nationally rated judge since 1975 and an internationally rated judge since 1980. He has judged a variety of national and international meets. He was a master scorer at the 1996 Olympic Games, worked at the 1991 World Championships and judged at the national level and the Olympic trials for men. Christine MacDonald Associate Head Coach 17th Season
Christine MacDonald enters her 17th year as Central Michigan University’s assistant coach and her sixth year as the associate head coach. MacDonald has moved into a new era for Chippewa gymnastics. Since coming to CMU as a gymnast in 1987, MacDonald’s duties have expanded and increased with every season. What was supposed to have been a two-year engagement has now turned into a rewarding career. “When I first came to CMU as a coach, I wasn’t sure how long I would stay,” MacDonald said. “I always knew I would love coaching with Jerry (Reighard) and I knew I missed the gym and this seemed to be a good fit.” Now, 17 years later, Coach Reighard and Coach MacDonald have formed a unified front at the helm of Chippewa gymnastics. Between them, they have a combined 41 years of coaching experience. They form one of the few coaching staffs in the nation that has been together more than 10 years. During her time on CMU’s staff, MacDonald has been a part of all but one of the Chippewas’ 10 championships – three as an athlete and six as a coach. In the gym, Christine is responsible for the daily workout plans, spotting, nutritional oversight and conditioning programs along with overseeing floor and beam choreography. “One of Christine’s strengths as a coach is technical analysis of routines,” Reighard said. “She also brings the stability and character the team needs and expects.” Under the guidance of MacDonald, CMU has produced the Mid-American Conference balance beam champion five of the past 10 years. She has also aided in the coaching of five individual NCAA national qualifiers over the past six years. In 2003, she was named NCAA Central Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. Outside of the gym, MacDonald serves as the team’s travel and recruiting coordinator, meet director and summer camp director. Christine and her husband, Keith, have three children and reside in Mount Pleasant.

Nancy Reighard Assistant Coach Eighth Season
Nancy Reighard enters her fourth straight season as an assistant coach. It will be her eighth season overall coaching for CMU, after also serving as an assistant from 1986-89. “Nancy brings valuable experience and a wealth of knowledge,” head coach Jerry Reighard said. “Her expertise on both floor exercise and balance beam, especially in the area of choreography, will make a big impact on our team this season.” In her first stint as an assistant, she coached two Mid-American Conference champions on floor exercise and balance beam. Reighard began her coaching career in 1976, serving as the head coach of the girls’ gymnastics team at Ionia High School for six years. She was also the director of the community education gymnastics program in Ionia from 1976-84. After concluding her stint on the CMU coaching staff, Reighard took over as the director of the Mount Pleasant Gymnastics Center from 1989-95. Reighard was a standout collegiate gymnast at CMU. She was a member of the only CMU team to qualify for the national championships in 1976. Reighard was an Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) All-American on floor exercise as a senior. She held the school record on floor when she graduated and was an accomplished performer on balance beam as well. Reighard graduated from CMU in 1976 with a degree in education. Reighard and her husband, Jerry, have been married for 35 years. Jerry is the head coach at CMU, a position he has held for the last 25 years.
