Management Skills for Supervisors As a manager in any profession, knowing how to communicate and resolve conflict are keys to success. The Management Skills for Supervisors offered through CNC’s Continuing Education department provides managers the tools they need for that success. The course, offered via either three four-day workshops or a series of weekly evening workshops, is divided into three parts: Communication Skills and Conflict Resolution; Group Decision-Making and Problem-Solving Skills, and Self-Management Skills. “Part 1 is the most popular level since it delves into interpersonal communication,” said instructor Zelda Craig. “You get to meet a lot of people from different organizations — from truck drivers and telecommunications to those in oil and gas and municipal sectors.” “People have a lot of biases that they’re not aware of. This gets them to understand conflicts between different demographics, older workers and those in the Twitter generation.” Students will also learn the six rules of developing a supportive work climate and how to give and receive effective feedback in difficult situations. Part 2 is a hands-on workshop that gives students knowledge on how to become more effective in meetings and practise shared responsibility and leadership. Students will also discover the five motivational drives of all people. They will also receive great ideas to take back to their organizations. Part three focuses on the individual supervisor, identifying strengths and potential areas of development. “People come from many different backgrounds and if we can understand ourselves better, we can deal with friction better,” said Craig. Craig has years of experience in the areas of facilitating, human resources and management skills. She holds a BA in Psychology, MBA and has her CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) designation. “These workshops are a lot of fun, interactive and very hands-on,” she said.

Your place or ours? CNC’s Continuing Education department offers opportunities for people to increase their skills to advance in the workplace or simply learn more about something that they’ve always enjoyed. More than 2,000 people per year take Continuing Education courses in Business & Office Solutions, Trades & Technology and Healthcare & Social Services. “To keep up with the competition, today’s businesses need to stay updated and innovative,” said Barbara Old, Dean of CNC’s Continuing Education department. “Our business and office technology courses will keep you on the cutting edge. Along with a full public training calendar, we can customize training in MS Office programs, management skills, conflict resolution, leadership development, customer service and many other business-related courses. CNC instructors can also bring their in-depth business knowledge and subject matter expertise directly to your workplace, or you can choose to spend some time away from the office learning new skills and ideas. “Your place or ours, we will deliver the training that will keep your business on course for success,” said Old. Contract training comes in very handy when it comes to trades and technology because it allows companies to increase the skills and thus productivity of its workforce without disrupting business. CNC can also provide highly specialized training to businesses which choose to share the cost with others in a similar situation. “With training needs such as Occupational Health and Safety, it is far more sensible to offer that training on the machinery in question and in the environment it is being used, such as your own work site,” says Old. “In these situations, our co-ordinators can deliver training directly to your site, or you can choose to access our CNC campus equipped with the latest in trades equipment and technology, or, if it fits your needs better, mining and bush camp sites. We can offer the flexibility to accommodate your work day schedule or even handle shift workers schedules,” said Old. Perhaps your staff only requires a quick brush up, or needs to focus on a particular element of the overall job (new technology, new techniques); maybe it’s a review of new standards or rules and regulations; it may be as simple as recertifying skills to remain compliant with today’s environment. Some examples of contract courses delivered by our trades and technology division include: WorkSafe BC training, CFC Recovery & Air Conditioning, Chainsaw Safety (ENFORM), mobile equipment training, Hybrid Vehicles systems and pesticide dispenser/applicator. The Health Care field continues to grow as new technologies and treatments are added. The scope of work for many front line health care workers has evolved and changed over the years requiring upgrading and specializing in a number of areas. CNC can provide flexibility to training that allows for entire departments and different shifts to attend on a timetable that works for them. We use instructors directly from the health care system that understand and know the training needs first hand. Whether it is a one-off upgrade to new technology or ongoing training / certification, we can work with you to provide the best options, using the CNC labs or delivering directly on your site. Whatever your needs, CNC’s Continuing Education department is confident it can help you achieve your objectives. Contact CNC’s Continuing Education today at 250-561-5846 or continuinged@cnc.bc.ca to discuss your training requirements.
