FAREWELL 3
ANASTASIA SLEPUKHOVA INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE ALABAMA, CNH KIWIN’S, NEW YORK, ROCKY MOUNTAINS
Greetings my fellow KIWINNERS! My name is Anastasia Slepukhova, and I am once again humbled to Introduce myself as your 2015-2016 Key Club International Trustee. For those of you just tuning in for their first update from International, let me start off by introducing myself. I am a senior at Lake Braddock Secondary, a school in the Washington DC suburbs where I have made home the past six years and also where my journey in Key Club started, much like many of yours. I also have a distinct privilege of being a voting member on the Key Club International Board. To give you an idea, the I-Board is comprised of one International President and Vice President and eleven International Trustees. We were all elected at the Key Club International Convention in Indianapolis this past June, and as a group, we have been entrusted with leading Key Club International and serving our members. Every International Trustee is assigned to “Sister” Districts, so this year in conjunction to serving the great KIWIN’S District, I am also thrilled to be working with the New York, Alabama, and Rocky Mountain Districts. It has been a true honor to be able to serve alongside your Immediate Past Governor Jade and her District Board this year; they have led KIWIN’S to new heights and they have touched the hearts of so many along the way, including mine. It was such an incredible privilege to be able to experience your ohana, even for just a weekend.

This year’s DCON, Cirque Du Service did such an amazing job at celebrating history, each and every one of you should be proud of, and also getting everyone excited for this upcoming service year. My top hat goes off to every KIWINNER that made an effort to make it to DCON this year, whether it was your first or your fourth, the weekend is truly a treasured memory. The passion I witnessed amongst all of you at DCON is one I wish could be mimicked across Key Clubbers worldwide. I have never in my life heard cheers as loud and proud, as those amongst the Divisions in competition for the Spirit sticks. I hope the energy, passion and excitement that y'all harnessed at DCON propels you through the next year. The next few months brings lots of excitement as you finish your school terms and get trained as officers next year. An incredible opportunity that you don't want to miss out is this year's International Convention that will be held in Atlanta, Georgia July 6-10th. There will be 1,600 Key Clubbers from all over the world ready to learn new skills, trade service tips and to make friends. Please reach out to your Lt. Governor or even email me at slepukhova.anastasia@gmail.com for more information. I truly hope to see you once again at ICON! Yours in friendship and service, Anastasia Slepukhova slepukhova.anastasia@gmail.com

“HEY KIWIN’S!” “YEAH?” “HOW DO YOU FEEL?!” That moment of exhilaration where you would cup your hands to your dry lips and parched throat and scream as if you just had to let the world know that you drank a bottle of mountain dew and ate half a gallon of ice cream that night. The place where even those shy girls who would say, “Oh, I can’t dance…” start breaking a move once the lights turn off and the flashing lights sway. Everyone back home talks about how foolish it all is, only to shrink back, uncertain at the maniacal grins on our faces once we return. “It’s not worth $200 dollars though, right?” Those few who actually went would turn and give each other a knowing smile. The non-DCON members wander wildly in the midst of the spirit-crazy people. “What have I missed?” They see us plan for next year’s fundraisers, they listen to us talk about people and experiences they will never know, and they hear us mumbling cheers absentmindedly under our breath. “Come next year,” we suggest, and their reply is CRYSTAL clear. “You bet I’m joining you.” We then look forward with a spring in our step and a twinkle in our eye. Because we know, or at least I do, that KIWIN’S isn’t complete without DCON. Not only did it boost spirit, but I found the goal that I didn’t even know we had. A division without DCON is like a boat sailing in the sea not knowing where the land is, or how far they’ve come. I think all of DCON’s participants got the feeling that we need to spread the news and show CNH those blind sailors the way, so we can KIWI all work together even harder to 40th C N’S N April 15-17 H KIWIN ’S DC , 2016 reach our destination. That way we Los A ON ngeles , CA J i h o can all look at each other and clap:

SYNERGY
1ST PLACE TALENT SHOW
“The moment Synergy was called up to perform on stage, many thoughts flooded our minds throughout our entire performance. Senior performer, Jiho, mentioned that, ‘This isn't practice; hopefully we get a good crowd cheer!’ As we began our first dance, John expresses that he ‘felt really nervous the first couple seconds, but after that, it was some of the most fun that [he’s] ever had.’ One of our couple dancers second that by saying, ‘The feeling while performing was unlike anything I've ever felt before,’ (David) and ‘All the nerves turned into adrenaline and it was the most alive I've ever felt,’ (Sara S.). Lee-Anne, who was a dancer and singer, said that, ‘I felt so much energy and support not only from the performers alongside me, but from the crowd as well, and I never wanted it to end.’ Patricia, a first year performer, also shares that she ‘just wanted to dance and perform with these awesome people as if it was just us and nobody else in the room.’ Overall, we agreed that our experiences and emotions we shared on stage could only be expressed in one word: Synergy.” Jerry Chen, Diamond Division
WEOW CREW
2ND PLACE TALENT SHOW
“It was the first time going to DCON for some of us and being able to perform in front of CNH KIWIN’S was very special to us, an honor, and we were really excited for that very moment.” Martin Nguyen, Jet Division “12 individuals, yet together, we're one team. I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to be a part of WEOW Crew and to have been able to meet and become closer to each and everyone one of them. The time leading up to DCON often consisted of multiple late night dance practices, but of course, we didn't mind because time flies when you're having a good time with one another! Performing at the DCON talent show alongside them was a great experience and I remember wishing it wouldn't end as the last song played. Throughout it all, I was having so much fun and thinking about it now, our enthusiasm and spirit was what I loved most about our performance. While DCON had ended 15 days ago (as of May 2nd and yes, I counted), I will always be holding on to this memory. I don't think I've been able to tell them, yet, but everyone in WEOW Crew, thank you for being a major part of my KIWIN'S journey!” Katie Tran, Jet Division
CECILIA NGUYEN 3RD PLACE TALENT SHOW
“I felt really nervous considering I was one of the few solo acts. Everyone was having team huddles, and I thought I would have to handle my nerves all by myself. But the KIWIN'S spirit and love never ceased to amaze me because the LQ-TIES invited me into their huddle, and all I could feel was excitement. I performed knowing I had all the support from my home club and the people I had just met the following day. It was a really happy and powerful moment for me, and I'm glad I got to participate in the show!” Cecilia Nguyen, Jet Division
THE BACASEN SISTERS
“We both had a great time and are thankful that we had the opportunity to perform alongside so many great dance groups and one other music performance this year at DCON. Although we were tired at the end of a long day, we still managed bring some happiness to our listeners with our rocky performance; that being the ultimate goal of these performances. Word of advice for next year’s performances: even if you’ve got your act down, go to the practice run through to make sure you have everything prepared (technology, order of performance, etc). It’ll save time, make your performance so much smoother, and (I apologize for this one Charissa) keep the entire show running as smoothly as its director intends and deserves.” Ki-a Bacasen, Emerald Division
KODI TANG
“When I went up I was really nervous always slightly shaking. I was nervous because I never really performed in such a big crowd before and also I kind of messed up by screaming and chanting the day before so I kind of lost my voice. But when I finally got up there and I started playing it just all set in all the pieces came together. And when I started singing and I started to hear all the cheering I felt the encouragement and support from the KIWIN’S family. So then I wasn't as nervous anymore and I was having fun. And by the time I got off I was more overjoyed than nervous.” Kodi Tang, Goldstone Division
LQ-TIES
“Being the first act, nerves definitely soard high, yet despite that, we were able to have fun! Days of practice amounted to this and we felt exhilirated aftewards! The crowd was super pumped and so were we. The acts after us were amazing!!” Thao Vy Huynh, Jet Division
MK CREW
“Performing for the DCON Talent Show for the first time was a blast! For the MK Crew, not all of us were dancers but we had a fun time showing the District that not only are we spirited, but we have sick moves as well. Although it was stressful and tiring going from general sessions straight into rehearsals and performances, it was definitely an experience we won't forget. We are really grateful for the moments where the District cheered us on, even when we messed up, because it helped ease our nervousness and gave us encouragement. 10/10 would recommend everyone to try performing in the talent show even if you're not the best dancer!” Julie Quan, Jet Division
JET PRESIDENTIAL MANATEAM
“Performing at DCON was so nerve wracking. I remember right before going out on stage I had this feeling at the very bottom of my stomach that just kept saying "Oh my gosh, you can’t do this," but I'm so glad I proved it wrong. It was breath taking and so fun. Looking back at it I actually wish I could do it all over again. S/o to the Jet Presibaes for being so supportive and awesome during the entire process.” Renee Su, Jet Division “Performing at the talent show felt so unreal. The day finally arrived. Everything we worked on, will finally show on stage. At first we were all really nervous, but as soon as the mix began playing, the adrenaline was just running through us. Our worries were all gone, and soon after we were having fun out there performing. The crowd was the best part, it's what kept us going.” Nat Nguyen, Jet Division
JEAN HSU
1ST PLACE ORATORICAL CONTEST “How would Key Club membership growth help us further our vision of being caring and competent servant leaders who transform comunities worldwide?” I’d like to start with a story. A story written by Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s called “I will be a Hummingbird.” So in this huge forest far, far away, there lived a myriad of happy animals. One day, unfortunately, there was a huge fire, and all of the animals flee from the forest. Desperately, for hours, they watch the overwhelming fire destroy their homes as they stared on in shock. However, there was a small hummingbird who finally said…“I’m going to do something about the fire.” And it flies to the nearest stream and takes a drop of water, races back and drops the tiny drop on the fire. The hummingbird flies as fast as it can, back and forth, back and forth, while the other animals stand and watch in bewilderment. Eventually the animals ask, “What do you think you can do, you’re too little!” and they laugh and wait for the hummingbird to give up. But… instead… the hummingbird tells them, “I am doing the best I can, and that… is what everyone should do.” This hummingbird… is every, single, person here at this convention. Just like the hummingbird, we may sometimes feel insignificant or that our efforts are useless, but we always try our very best to serve our community and make our world a better place. And that is a value that KIWINS has so carefully instilled in us from the very beginning. But… what about the rest of the animals? Just standing there, watching their home, the place they love, fall apart. Think about the elephant, who could have brought so much water to the fire. All of us here at this convention have been privileged enough to be a part of this community service organization that has fostered our love and understanding of the power of service, but there are so many others out there who have not been able to witness the power of community and the power of family and the power of empathy. And that is why membership growth is so important for Key Club International. There is no doubt that KIWIN’S and Key Club was founded the basis of inclusivity and community and we have all experienced first-hand, how much impact Key Club and KIWIN’S can have on our development. High school is such a prime time for us: it is where we learn our values and what is truly important to us. This space single handedly serves as a place for all of us to grow intellectually and emotionally, from learning to organize events to public speaking to interacting with so many diverse and incredible people. But more importantly, think of all the potential that lies in the hearts of so many people out there. Human capital has always been the key to social change and innovation, and for us, it’s simple - the more members we have equals the more change we can make in this world. Think of all the things that could be changed if every single student had a burning desire in their heart to serve the people around them and the support they needed to do so. All of us in this room, we’re going to become the adults of this world in a few years. In roughly 10 years, this planet will be left in our hands and we will get to decide what to do with it. Whether it goes down in flames or it changes for the better, it’s up to us. You know that girl right there, yeah she’s going to cure cancer. And that boy right there, yup! Hes gonna design the newest technology to reduce air pollution. And that other girl, shes going to devote the rest of her life to helping the homeless. You see, the possibilities are endless. When we make the active decision to attract more students into this wonderful community, we are making the commitment not just to the club, but to the world. Key Club and KIWIN’S is where we train and grow a family of changemakers who will set out into the world to think globally and act locally. And so, it is only appropriate to close with one of the most powerful quotes on the Berlin Wall. It says, “Many small people who in many small places do many small things that can alter the face of the world.” Thank you.
FEATURED ARF SAPPHIRE DIVISION PAAJ MOUA, HISTORIAN | MERCED HIGH SCHOOL DCON 2016 | APRIL 15-17, 2016 DCON 2016 was an unforgettable event. The 40th annual district convention Cirque Du Service for KIWIN'S took place in Los Angeles, California on April 15-17; many divisions from NorCal and SoCal had attended this event. Our home division, Sapphire, had 2 schools who were at DCON this year: Merced High School and El Capitan High School. From April 15-17, everyone in each division had the chance to be able to meet and bond with each other. Old timers and new timers had the chance to get to know everyone and share each other's experiences during this event. Spirit battles and cheers took place, we were given multiple awards (woohoo!), and although we didn't win any spirit sticks this year, there will always be next year! Both schools had a blast at DCON and we will all be waiting for next year to meet everyone else again! We'll hold and cherish this memorable event in our hearts forever!

ANDREA HU 2015-2016 CNH KIWIN’S DISTRICT BULLETIN EDITOR
Hey CNH KIWIN’S! It feels like I’m starting my term instead of ending it for the final time while writing this letter. This takes me back to last year when I was making the first GEMS issue during AP testing week. Rest in peace, past Andrea. If you guys don’t know me, my name is Andrea Hu, and I’m the Immediate Past District Bulletin Editor! Even though I’m a has-been, I’m still excited for the upcoming year with your 2016-2017 District Board leading the district to a brighter future. CNH KIWIN’S is going to do bigger and better things, and I just can’t wait for the future successes! This is actually a good-bye letter, but I don’t want to say good-bye because I’ll always find a way to stay in the K-Family. Maybe I’ll come back as an advisor for CNH KIWIN’S! I might as well reflect on my term, and get in touch with my sentimental side. To start off, I’m so, so lucky to end up with 17 other amazing individuals who are all unique, innovative and inspiring. If I’m being truly honest, there is always one trait in every board member that I wish I had. Looking back, I genuinely thought I knew what I was getting myself into, but I was wrong. I didn’t know that on top of the responsibilities, I made new friends and memories. It’s as if a part of my limb tore off when I had to retire because I naturally still thought I served the district as a board member and to think that I might not ever meet some of the board members again is something that didn’t make sense to me. I still thought we had quarterly board meetings to meet up, catch up on life and mainly work.
26
I love creating newsletters and content for the district because it was my way of interacting with the members. I’ll miss late night newsletter lay-outing and no sleep for the name of KIWIN’S. My life’s pretty bland right now because a huge chunk of it was dedicated towards KIWIN’S. I still go to my club’s events (shoutout to Ashley Kim for already being an amazing president at Glen A. Wilson KIWIN’S) but it’s depressing because I know it’s ending soon. I made a promise to myself to enjoy being a general member for the next 2 weeks because that’s all I wanted when I served on club board and district board. Most of all, I’ll miss the adult support system we had while on district board. I don’t think I’ve ever met a group of adults who truly believe in the youth. People constantly question what changes we can bring when we’re at this age, but the adult board doesn’t question-instead, they put their trust in us and watch us grow, problem-solve and create. I’m a has-been, but my number one goal was to make a positive change to the CNH KIWIN’S District. I’m saying good-bye for now, but like any old friend, I’m reuniting with KIWIN’S in the future. Catch ya later when I’m in my 30s HAHA. Always at your service, Andrea Hu IP District Bulletin Editor
KATHY BUI 2015-2016 CNH KIWIN’S DISTRICT TREASURER
Helloooo CNH KIWIN’S!!! Welcome to your first District Newsletter of the 2016-2017 KIWIN’S Service Term!!! I feel bittersweet as I type this out now as I know it will be the last time I’m able to address the members at a District level and I intend to use this opportunity to its fullest potential. When I first considered running for District Treasurer, I thought I would be simply a glorified Club Treasurer, running fundraisers on a larger District-wide scale. I was so excited to be able to impact the organization and serve on such a grand scale for Project Eliminate and the Pediatric Trauma Program. Unfortunately, overseeing massive fundraisers did not fall under my jurisdiction over my term, but with every action I took I saw the rippling impact it made on the District. From a small idea I had at a board meeting to something I threw together twenty minutes before an Executive board phone call, every thought, word, and action I had was able to be put into real action and create tangible results. I can’t stress enough the fact that we are a fully student-led organization. Students like you and me call the shots and get things done, and there aren’t that many opportunities for high school kids to make such a great impact as thereare in serving Key Club International.
One of the first things I learned as a District Board member was that the members always come first. Without diligent, dues paid members who fundraise and serve their communities, I would have had no one to serve. Every single one of the over 2400 members has given me a purpose to serve this past year, and I cannot thank you enough for allowing me this privilege. For seniors like myself who will no longer be KIWIN’S members in a few months, reminisce on the old and new friends you’ve made, the cheers you’ve lost your voices for, and the memories and laughs you will hold in your heart as you venture into the new chapter of your life. For underclassmen that still have a few precious years left, go out of your comfort zone, talk to that shy member, scream your heart out like nobody’s watching, and apply for that position you think you could never get. We need leaders for our organization and communities and I think you’re up to the task. Signing off for the last time… Yours in Service, Kathy Bui IP District Treasurer 2015-2016

TIFFANY NGUYEN 2015-2016 CNH KIWIN’S DISTRICT SECRETARY
To CNH KIWIN’S, 4 years. If a baby boy was born the moment I joined KIWIN’S, he would’ve already begun to crawl. He would’ve spoken his first words, laughed his first joke, made his first friend. After four years, he would’ve grown so much he could’t fit his old shirt anymore. Fortunately, for me, I can still fit some old clothes from four years ago, but I am definitely not the same person. I’ve sprinted my way down an empty street at 4 A.M. at one of my first service events. I’ve spoken my first Key Club Pledge, laughed at my own lame jokes, made several lifelong best friends. I’ve done all of this and more with this beautiful organization, and it physically pains me to move on. Thank you for literally everything.
28
People always ask, “Why join KIWIN’S?” Instead of trying to explain why I love it so much, the service and passion and ohana, I simply say, “Because of KIWIN’S, my life changed. So can yours.” This isn’t goodbye, because I have too many children still in this club (you know who you are and I love you). See you later, KIWIN’S. I’ll come back as a Kiwanis advisor and chaparone all your events. Love, Tiffany Nguyen 2015-2016 IP CNH KIWIN’S District Secretary
JADE WONG 2015-2016 CNH KIWIN’S DISTRICT GOVERNOR
HELLO CNH KIWIN’S! It’s just hitting me now how this is probably one of the last times I’m going to be greeting all of you as a fellow KIWIN’S member. Wow. These past four years have just been incredible-- a complete whirlwind of ups, downs, lessons learned, success celebrated, friendships formed, but most of all, a spectrum of experiences ingrained so deeply I can hardly differentiate KIWIN’S from myself. KIWIN’S really has been the constant that kept me centered throughout high school. Whenever I’ve felt discouraged or overwhelmed, KIWIN’S was always the things that kept me grounded. I credit a lot of that to the members and advisors I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know and working with over the years. At the end of these four years, I can definitely say that KIWIN’S will always be a part of me. Some people will say that you shouldn’t lose your identity in someone or something, but honestly, KIWIN’S helped me find who I am and who I want to be for the rest of my life. If you’re reading this as a past member moving on to the next stage in your life, I hope you’ve gained something from this organization whether it be a friend, a memory, you name it. If you have, hold on to it and never let it go. KIWIN’S is so special and nothing will ever be like it again. Not to say that everything else is bad, but it’s definitely going to be different and that’s something I’m struggling to come to terms with myself. For those of you who still have a few more years ahead of you, I just want to remind you to cherish every single moment you have left. Appreciate the mornings that are way too early and the nights that are way too long. Appreciate the Little
Cesar’s pizza on the cardboard plates that always seem to leave your nice slacks full of grease. Appreciate the multitude of Facebook derp pictures of you cheering. Appreciate those times after events when your parents are there to pick you up but you’re not ready leave. Appreciate those weekly lunch meetings where you struggle to get to class after the bell has already rung but the president is still talking. Appreciate the emotions, both happy and sad, because it will be a long time before you ever encounter a group of students as passionate as KIWIN’S again. At the end of the day, KIWIN’S is really what you make of it and what you put into it. For me, I put everything I had into KIWIN’S, but in return, KIWIN’S opened up doors that I never thought were imaginable before. It helped me earn the scholarships of my dreams, further my career aspirations, and make connections that will go far beyond high school. I really owe a big part of who I am and who I’m going to be to KIWIN’S. If you really give it a chance you will no doubt get a lot in return. I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to repay everything KIWIN’S gave to me, but one thing I’m certain about is that I will live the rest of my life doing everything in my power to pay it forward. It’s been a heck of a ride and knowing me, it’s never really going to be good bye. So, I’ll see you soon CNH KIWIN’S. With love, Jade Wong 2015-2016 District Governor
