introduction Hellooo Grizzlies! School has started, and you know what that means... Club Rush and the first KIWIN’S club meeting of the year! Both of these are two very important ways to recruit new members, so make sure your club is prepared for both of these by checking out the resources released by the Membership Development and Education Committee. Even though your education is important, service is important too! Take a break from homework when you can one weekend, and go out with your club to volunteer. Helping your community will not only benefit society, but will also help you develop character. It’s a great way to bond with others, relax, and enjoy life. The term is rapidly approaching its mid-point, and it’s crazy to say that Fall Rally is only a few months away. Seniors, prepare for college applications, goodbyes, and new beginnings. It’s a little scary, but always remember that KIWIN’S will always be with you in your heart. Cherish the memories you can make now with your Ohana, because I can promise you you’ll miss it later on in life. With that being said, I hope everyone was able to enjoy their summer break! I hope you’re well-rested, because those AP/ honor classes are going to be exhausting. Best of luck! Yours in service, Nina Nguyen CNH KIWIN’S District Governor

meet our trustee Hello KIWIN’S! My name is Cindy Shou and I’m beyond honored to serve the Carolinas, CNH KIWIN’S, and West Virginia districts as International Trustee for the 2018-2019 service year. I will aid the Governors, District Boards, and Administrators with any goals. A significant portion of my work will be done for committees; this year, I will be serving on the Membership committee and as the chair of the Service committee. A major aspect of the service committee is the YOF grant and other service grants– be sure to apply for them! I will be sending out monthly newsletters as well as updates every other week to ensure that everyone is informed about topics and changes from the International level. Key Club- the service we do, the friends we make, and the leadership skills we gain- has challenged me consistently and I’m excited to promote this experience to even more students this year. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity to work with the amazing CNH KIWIN’S district this year and it was amazing visiting your officers at the Summer Board Meeting!

Yours in friendship and service, Cindy Shou International Trustee Please follow our sistrict social media @wcarokiwins on Instagram and West CaroKIWIN’S group on Facebook!

ICON was an unbelievable experience. I got to meet so many amazing people from ALL OVER THE WORLD!! I thought I knew Key Club until I went to Chicago back in July, there was so much to learn! My favorite thing about ICON was all the new restaurants I got to try, including Chicago’s famous deep dish pizza! Between you and me, I thought deep dish pizza was all bread, like regular pizza with really thick bread. But to my surprise, it was literally a pizza pie. Silly me, but it’s definitely an experience I will never forget. If you’ve been to DCON, ICON is like DCON but a million times bigger. Thousands of people were in one building and for one reason, because we love Key Club! I just hope that more people get to experience what I got to in the future.

CAMERON BERNAL To be quite honest, International Convention was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. I remember nervously waiting at 4AM in the airport for my early 6AM flight. I landed in Chicago and so it began. Famous Chicago Dogs for dinner at Portillo’s, a Chicago rain + thunderstorm, deep dish pizza, awards, workshops, it was a whirlwind of fun. One of my favorite moments was seeing CNH KIWIN’S get recognized at the international level, including 4 Diamond Level Distinguished Clubs, Distinguished District Governor and 5 RFL Outstanding Lieutenant Governors. The work we do as an entire district is astonishing, and having it acknowledged in front of other districts is truly special. Another highlight of International Convention is traveling with friends. You essentially get to explore an entirely different city with your friends, which is an incredibly unique situation. In addition, you get to make new friends from other districts. In fact, this year I made two really great friends at ICON: Julie Lely, who is from the PNW District and serves as their District Editor, and Zoe Yao, who is from the CNH District, and serves as their District Secretary. Throughout our time at ICON, we would get boba together, talk about our passion for Key Club, go to trendy cafes and enjoy each other’s company. I’m honestly so grateful that I attended ICON, because I would not have made those two amazing pals if I hadn’t. Overall, if you’re on the fence about ICON, or if you haven’t even considered it yet, I strongly encourage you to go. ICON is a truly unique event that gives you so many new learning opportunities, chances to learn more about Key Club, but also to learn valuable life lessons. If you’re interested in getting a glimpse of what ICON was like, you can watch my ICON vlog here: https://tinyurl.com/cnhkiconvlog Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me regarding any questions about ICON, I’d be more than willing to help. Hope to see you all next year in Baltimore ^.^

ICON 2019 NINA NGUYEN

To summarize, International Convention was an indescribable experience! It’s similar to District Convention, but on a totally different level. Having the opportunity to attend and meet so many great individuals was honestly the highlight of my summer. Meeting and listening to delegates, sightseeing Chicago, and trading pins with other Key Clubbers were all major focuses of the trip. Watching officers and clubs from our District receive the recognition they have worked for all year truly made my heart warm. If you have the opportunity to attend International Convention, don’t let it slip! Go to International Convention 2019; it’ll be a great one I promise!

JULY GEM OF THE MONTH

ALEXANDRA ALADHAM (CRYSTAL) As a young freshman, I was unsure of what to do during my time in high school. I only knew that I wanted to be apart of something amazing and important. Little did I know that KIWIN'S was exactly what I was looking for. I attended the first meeting and was instantly hooked. The atmosphere was exhilarating and I left the club meeting feeling excited and happy to start my KIWIN'S journey. I quickly applied for Appointed Board and spent the entire year serving my club and my community as a KIWIN'S officer. I attended dozens of service events such as Hashtag Lunchbags, where we make food for the less fortunate, and beach clean-ups. Every single one of these service events made me realize that I could make a difference, even as a student. Later, I ran for President of my club. My board and I spent almost everyday planning events, fundraisers, meetings, and socials. It may have been stressful at times, especially during Fall Rally and DCON season, but I wouldn't have changed a thing. My Sophomore year as a KIWIN'S Club President shaped me into the leader I am today. I learned something new everyday from my members and fellow officers. When the year came to an end, I applied for Executive Assistant, and now I am lucky to serve my division as the 2018-2019 Crystal EA. I am able to attend many service events, and not only help my community, but younger KIWIN'S members as well. Almost any event can make a lasting impact on someone. Recently, I attended an arts and crafts service event in which we helped children make crafts. Even doing something small like this made a difference for the children and helped me better realize my passion for helping others. I can't wait to continue my KIWIN'S journey because I know how much this organization has helped me and I want to make sure all of our members are impacted in the same way. Without KIWIN'S, my high school experience would've been extremely different and I am grateful everyday for the opportunities KIWIN'S has given me.

M O N T H

AUGUST GEM OF THE MONTH ANTHONY VIRAMONTES (DIAMOND) To be truthful the only reason I decide to join KIWIN'S was for community service points at my school which would get a larger chance to earn rank ( I go to a military style school that's why ). Now I'm in KIWIN'S not only because of my duty as president but also because of the bonds that I've made here. Inclusiveness has played a big role in the reason why I'm here today and I want others to experience that as well. As president I want to grow the club make us grow larger than it was before. I want to make this club mighty and spiritual and that's my main goal for this year.

featured july ARF OC VISION WALK // LOS AMIGOS, JET The sun began to heat up, perfect for a walk, as everyone started to arrive around 6:30 a.m. to help set up. We all gathered underneath the big red hat where we met up with fellow KIWIN’S and Key Club members as well as our own LAHS Key Club board who offered to join us at this event due to our small number of volunteers. For most of the morning, the event hosts instructed us through setting up tables and canopies for snacks, registration, and t-shirts. When this job was completed we waited patiently as everyone arrived to sign-in. While we waited, we gathered in a huge circle with everybody and participated in riddles and games with other clubs and got to know each other through ice-breakers! Soon, we were called back by the hostesses and they began to hand out yellow and blue pom-poms and cowbells for us to use to cheer on and encourage the runners/walkers along the track. In order to do this job, they brought us around the racetrack which went through the whole stadium! We were assigned spots where we stood and waited a little bit longer for the race to officially begin. A while later, people began to pour in, wearing the red Vision Walk T-Shirt. We grabbed our pom-poms and cheered them on, chanting KIWIN’S spirit cheers as well as our own school cheers. The runners replied back with smiles and waves as we jumped up and down in excitement for them. For 2 more long hours, we nearly lost our voices as we continuously motivated them and their cause. It really was Fall Rally all over again! As this went on, the hostesses met up with all the volunteers who were along the track and handed us water and granola bars as we continued to finish up our job. By the end of the race, we walked along the track ourselves to the front of the stadium in order to meet up with everybody. The hostesses offered us leftover T-Shirts to take home along with our volunteer ones, and before we cleaned up we grabbed extra water, snacks, and even made our own popcorn and cotton candy! The event finished off with raffle winners and further announcements. At the end of the event, their organization managed to raise more than their goal of $115,000! Most of these funds were donated to their cause as well as other team causes that were involved in this event. It was truly remarkable at how much assistance people can give one another. By the end of the race we helped put tables and extra shirts away in boxes and unfolded the canopies before we made our way home with our voices nearly gone for a worthy cause.

featured aug ARF DCM+PURPLE HEART // EAST BAKERSFIELD, RUBY When I remember the July Divisional Council Meeting Ruby Division had on Saturday July 14th at one o’clock in the afternoon, I remember that all of the attendees were introduced and that our Ltg. Jannette Delacruz was able to hold an exceptional DCM. Every high school discussed their monthy club reports and future service events, we had recognitions, and before adjournment was announced Jannette went over the major and minor emphasis’s while including the Governor’s project as well. Yokuts Park Empire Dr. was were all attending members of Ruby Division were able to have their July DCM which included our epic water balloon fight which made sure that members could also enjoy their time with their fellow Rubies. Music was played and food and water was provided to everyone, eventually after the fun was had members and officers began the Yokuts Park cleanup. We gathered the aftermath of our energetic waterballoon throwing, and made sure the park was left cleaner then when we arrived at the park by picking up all the trash that was left lying around the park grounds. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience and around four o’clock it was time to departure, so we thanked everyone for coming and made sure to especially thank our Ltg. for hosting the July DCM. I look forward to our August DCM. Our next community service event was held on Thursday July 19th at nine o’clock in the morning. This service event was called the Purple Heart Truck Run and was located at the Bakersfield Vet Center on Golden State Avenue. For Ruby Division going to the event meant not just to volunteer but to also show the support we had for the Kiwanis Lieutenant Governer who was attending the service. The event started by welcoming the MOPH mobility equipped, 2018 Ford F-150 and ended with the signing of the car by just donating the least amount of one dollar. What was memorable about this event to me was I learned about how the truck had gone throughout the country thanking Americans for their support and that with each stop people were able to leave their mark on the truck. That day had a positive impact on me, because it not only focused on informing everyone there about purple heart veterans but also on thanking anyone that has served, protected, or helped the people of this country. At the end of the service event around one o’clock I was given the oppurtunity to write on the truck which I did immediately signing KIWIN’S and my name. Next time the Purple Truck comes into town for a service event I hope to be able to have more attendees for the event. by MARA CERVANTES

A NOTE FROM KELLEN What's up CNH KIWIN'S! My name is Kellen and I'm a full-time staff member at Thirst Project, aka your new Governor's Project! Our team is honored to be selected as your main service partner this upcoming academic year and I am SO PUMPED to work with you guys. For those of you that are new to Key Club or have been living under a rock and skipping meetings, Thirst Project is the World's Largest YOUTH Water Organization. Unfortunately, we still live on a planet where 663 million people are living without access to safe, clean drinking water. 663 million is an INSANE number (twice the population of the US!), but it's more than just a big number. It means that everyday, people have to use unprotected and contaminated water sources for all of their daily needs (drinking, washing, etc.). It means that women can't get jobs and children can't get an education because they have to walk miles (3.75 miles on average) everyday to fetch water from sources that are shared with animals and full of bacteria and parasites. Clean water is essential to life and the water crisis kills more people than anything else on our planet. So our mission is to END the global water crisis and ensure that EVERYONE has access to clean water. How do we do it? YOU GUYS!!! Next year marks the 10th anniversary (HBD to us) and throughout those years STUDENTS ALONE have raised over 9 million dollars to provide clean water to over 330,000 people in 13 different countries all over the world! And 100% of all the money we raise at Thirst Project goes directly towards building sustainable wells and providing safe, clean drinking water to communities in need. Our main focus right now is the country of Swaziland! And every semester, our student speakers (aka Road Warriors) present at hundreds of schools, all over the country to educate students about the water crisis and inspire them to take action. We the believe in the power of YOUTH! As for me, I am an Education Team member at Thirst Project HQ (the coolest office in all of Los Angeles)! I learned about Thirst Project in high school, I went on two school tours in 2017 and now it's my job to help students fundraise and take action. You guys will be hearing from me a lot and I'm always available to answer questions, talk over fundraising ideas and help out. Consider me a cross between a Thirst Project encyclopedia and HYPE MAN (hence all these capitalized words)! We may be young and fun (at least we think), but the water crisis is no joke and we're thrilled to have you guys on our side. YOU are now a part of Thirst Project. Let's work hard, crush our goals and provide more people on our planet with access to safe, clean drinking water! It's time to change the world! Kellen Thirst Project
