governor’s note Hello CNH KIWIN’S Grizzlies! My name is Nina Nguyen, and I honorably serve you as your District Governor for the 2018-2019 term. CNH KIWIN’S is truly an amazing organization, and I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to meet and work with such passionate individuals. Because it’s summer, I want to emphasize the importance of serving. Yes, there’s finally no school, but this shouldn’t cause you to mope around at home all day! Get out there and volunteer at a soup kitchen, pick up trash at the park, or drop by the senior citizens’ home and help with bingo. Don’t let the hot weather prevent you from volunteering. We are CNH KIWIN’S, a student-led SERVICE organization. Let’s show the world how much we care about serving our home, school, and community. During this term, the District Board Officers and I will work hard to ensure that the district rises toward higher achievements and membership. To us, this organization is more than just a group of students volunteering; it’s a family changing the world, one event at a time. If we put our heart and soul into it, there is nothing we can’t achieve. Before you know it, we’ll be breaking BEARriers! Along with everyone else in this District, I am proud to be a part of such an impactful organization. I look forward to watching each and every member contribute to the success of our District. In service and spirit, CNH KIWIN’S District Governor Nina Nguyen

DISTRICT GOVERNOR Nina Nguyen Hey hey hey CNH KIWIN’S! I’m Nina Nguyen, and I’m currently serving you as your District Governor. To let everyone know a little bit more about me, I’m from Jade Division and am attending Hercules High School as an incoming senior. I love the color pink, and I love making jokes. If I’m not volunteering, I’m probably watching movies or sleeping. Moreover, I am super excited to meet and get to know all of you! To continue on, I’m beyond grateful to have the chance to lead and work with some of the most amazing people in the world. This experience has been extremely surreal since District Convention, and I’ll continue to feel honored serving this District. There are so many great things in store for this term, and I know we’ll rise to achieve great success! Let’s do this Grizzlies!
DISTRICT SECRETARY Cameron Bernal Hello all! I’m Cameron Bernal and I’m so honored to be serving as your District Secretary of CNH KIWIN’S Key Club for the 2018-2019 term. I’m so excited to get to know each and everyone of you this year as we work together towards a prosperous future for our district. I’m an incoming senior attending Rancho Campana High School from the Turquoise Division. A fun fact about me is that I can’t roll my R’s. I love eating healthy and exercising, but don’t get me wrong I still love junk food, especially boba and cheesecake! Some things I dislike are celery, mustard and spiders. I’ve served a variety of roles in our organization from Sophomore Class Representative to President as well as member of the the District Special Projects and Membership Development & Education Committees. But to be honest with you, it’s completely unbelievable and humbling that I’ve been given the opportunity to serve as your District Secretary. I truly never imagined that I would have the privilege to serve our district on such a large scale. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me, whether it be for any clarification regarding secretary duties, general assistance with KIWIN’S subjects, or just as a friend (uwu). I’m looking forward to a wonderful year of service together!

DISTRICT BULLETIN EDITOR Pauline Dang What up, I’m Pauline, I’m 17, and I’m serving as your District Bulletin Editor! A little bit about me: I’m from Marina High School in Jet Division. I really like to drink water. I can drink like 10 bottles a day. I’ve been a scout since I was 6 and enjoy the outdoors. I love going camping, hiking, trips to the beach, etc. I also enjoy eating spicy food even though my spice tolerance is not that great. I have a black belt. I can juggle, And I can’t swim. Anyways, I am incredibly blessed to have the chance to represent CNH KIWIN’S for another year. As bulletin editor, I am in charge of all the newsletters, manuals, and the graphics published by the district. Which means I made this newsletter! I really hope that you enjoy reading this month’s edition of GEMS and look forward to future publications. My aim with these newsletters is to allow YOU to get to know more about the district that you are a part of and keep you updated on what’s going on in CNH KIWIN’S at all times. If you have any comments or suggestions, let me know! I’m always open to talk, so hit me up anytime. I’m looking forward to serving you this term! P.S. grapes are better than cherries

JET DIVISION Cynthia Nguyen Hi SNH KIWIN’S! (and burrito boy) My name is Cynthia Nguyen and I’m happy to serve as this term’s Jet Lieutenant Governor! Since freshman year, KIWIN’S has opened my eyes to so many new opportunities and experiences. Other than KIWIN’S, I enjoy picking mustard over ketchup, storing a surplus of wonton dumplings in my fridge, eating poke, and simping 24/7. My twin is Katrina Huynh. I hate writing about myself. Okay bye! C <3
DIAMOND DIVISION Diana Baliscao Hello my fellow Kiwinners, Hey KIWIN'S!!! My name is Diana Baliscao and I am the Diamond Lieutenant Governor for the 2018-2019 term. I am very excited to see what this year will bring in the district and within the individual divisions. Just so you know me better, I am the type of person who cannot have a good meal without a good drink. Usually that drink being some sort of tea from 7 leaves or ShareTea. I’m pretty picky when it comes to boba. I love to create whether that be flyers, videos, or my various attempts on making music with my beginners knowledge of playing the piano and guitar. Not to mention, I love to sing. I may not be good at it but it’s there, but yeah that’s me in a nutshell. Aside from my weird and basic personality, I do have ambition in creating a division powerful in service and leadership. I have big hopes and dreams for the future of Diamond division and our district. In our hard efforts of spirit and service, we can reconstruct and reach various heights. Breaking BEARiers may not be so simply stated but I am empowered to do so with the web of incredible leaders in line for this long and not pithy journey. Very dramatically stated, but also very true. We got this.
RUBY DIVISION Jannette Delacruz Hello my fellow Kiwinners, My name is Jannette Delacruz Ramirez. I am serving as the 2018-2019 Ruby Lieutenant Governor. I am an incoming Junior at East Bakersfield High School. I have been in KIWIN’S since my freshman year. At first, I had no idea what this club was or what I was getting myself into. At club rush the officers were encouraging students to go to their first meeting, so, I decided to go because they would have food. And who would not go I mean c’mon. Everyone in this club was very kind so I felt like this was for me where I belonged. I have no idea why but, community service was something I always wanted to do during my high school career. As soon as I went to the next meeting I got attached to KIWIN’S so from there I became President and now Lieutenant Governor. I am so happy to say that KIWIN’S is such an AMAZING organization and changes someone immensely. Each and everyone of you has filled my life with happiness and positive spirit at the District events. I love KIWIN’S so much that I don’t know what I’d do without you guys. I love to be involved in extracurricular activities. Especially being involved in KIWIN’S. My favorite part of the week is when I go to the KIWIN’S meeting and spend time with my Ohana. When I serve my community I feel like I can be someone who changes the world and helping people is the best thing. I love that feeling when you help out and give back to your community even though for some events you have to wake up early at 7am in the morning but it’s definitely a sacrifice I’m willing to take. I am involved in sports such as tennis and swim. I am in a program called (HCA) Health Careers Academy in which help students achieve jobs in the medical field.
TURQUOISE DIVISION Jessica Naranjo What’s Poppin KIWIN’S! My name is Jessica Naranjo and I am proud to serve as your Turquoise Lieutenant Governor for the 2018 to 2019 term. If you do not know me personally, I am about to tell you a few things that sum up my unique personality. I play three sports, I’m in cross-country, track & field and cheerleading (but I don’t consider myself an athlete). I don’t know how to cook (AT ALL) and I burn almost everything I make. In fact, I once forgot I had left the stove on and all the fire alarms went off in my house. However, I know, and love, to bake. Another interesting and cringey fact about me is that in fifth grade I taught myself how to shuffle in place, shuffle to the left and shuffle to the right. Although I can shuffle, I don’t know how to dance very well, but that doesn’t stop me from breaking a sweat on the dance floor. Besides shuffling in the hallways in elementary school, I was also a polynesian dancer for seven years. I have always loved music and movies. I don’t know how to sing well, but I can act and was in a play based on a book titled Esperanza Rising when I was a freshman. There are so many stories that I can talk about like the time that I didn’t notice my neighbor’s house was on fire or the video I have of myself attempting to tumble for the first time (it’s hilarious in slo-mo), but I’m going to leave those stories as incentives for all of you to get to know me. I am excited for this new term and hope I can create many more memories with our OHANA.
SAPPHIRE DIVISION Juan Perez Hello CNH! My name is Juan Perez and I am honored to be representing as Sapphire division’s Lieutenant Governor for the 2018-2019 term. I am currently a junior attending Merced High School. Sadly, I joined KIWIN’S during my sophomore year and didn’t get to experience the presence of such great people during my freshman year. My KIWIN’S experience started when I joined midway through the year and I was told about District Convention. I was a bit hesitant about going but ended up joining the fun and it completely changed my life. Never before have I felt so much positive energy and been around such friendly people. This is when I realize how close of an OHANA KIWIN’S really was. The spirit during those three days was incredible and I was instantly motivated to get more involved. This was just my story and I hope to let others create their own as I will work close with my division to make this possible. Since Sapphire is fairly small in clubs, I would like to charter a club this upcoming term. I aim to increase Sapphire’s membership by 10% and also increase their attendance to Fall Rally and District Convention, as well as participation in KIWIN’S Key Club week. If there are ever any questions, comments or concerns, don’t hesitate in contacting me.
EMERALD DIVISION Julianna Pantoja Hello! I am Julianna Pantoja the 2018-2019 Emerald Lieutenant Governor for CNH KIWIN’S. I am an incoming senior attending Otay Ranch HS. In my free time I like to do anything related to art! My favorite medium currently is oil painting and color pencils. I also, golf for my school team! Something else about me is that I am obsessed with anything Disney, especially DIsneyland!! Some things I will be striving for this term as Lieutenant Governor are expanding Emerald Division to more schools in SD, increasing communication within all the clubs in Emerald, and increasing participation in fundraisers and service projects. I am excited to see what this year has in store for our District!
GOLDSTONE DIVISION Maille Uyehara Hello Everyone! My name is Maille Uyehara and I am the Lieutenant Governor of Goldstone Division and incoming senior at Glen A. Wilson High School. I look forward to this term and hope to put my best foot forward. It’s hard to believe I’m already a senior and I cannot thank KIWIN’S enough for what I have learned these past few years. I joined KIWIN’S the summer of 2015, before my freshman year; on the request of my basketball teammate, who was vice president at the time. I didn’t know it yet, but that event was just the beginning. That summer, I educated myself on all things KIWIN’S and even learned my mother was a Keywanette and father a Key Clubber. To my disbelief, they both were extremely active members in high school and hed multiple positions throughout their high school careers. This is when I realized that KIWIN’S can penetrate our lives deeper than just our high school days, it is something we carry with us the rest of our lives. I have a vision for this term and I hope you will join me in my efforts to make this the best year possible. I hope to increase communication between the clubs in my division as well as boost each club’s participation and engagement. This club has given me so much, I want to do my part to make it the best it can possibly be and set this division for success in the future. I will do my best to ensure this year will be GOLDEN!
CRYSTAL DIVISION Mina Choi Hello CNH KIWIN’S! My name is Mina Choi and I will be serving as the Crystal Lieutenant Governor for the 2018-2019 term. A little bit about me is that I enjoy hanging out with my friends and drinking boba whenever I have the chance to, dogs instantly make me smile when they get happy to see me, and my goal in life is to live life fruitfully with as much positive energy around me. In my term, I’m hoping to create closer relationships with people within and outside of my division to accentuate our motto of being an Ohana. Through numerous service-geared and fun events, I am confident that we, as a District, can come together to make a successful term. I can’t wait for this new and exciting journey to start with you all!
JADE DIVISION Ryan Saechao HELLO EVERYONE! My name is Ryan Saechao and I proudly serve as Jade Divisions Lieutenant Governor of the 2018-2019 term! I will be a upcoming Junior and I go to Richmond High School! Some fun facts about myself is that my favorite color is GREEN because most flavors that is green taste pretty good and mostly every shade of green is CUTE! Another fun fact is that I like eating, I mean WHO DOESN’T? KIWIN’S Key Club is such an amazing organization and has inspired me to be the person I am today. Being in the District Board is such an honor and privilege. Working with everyone on the Board has been AMAZING and they all are beautiful human beings that will make sure that this term will be successful! I can’t wait to meet every single one of you that shares the same passion as I do! If you see me somewhere say hi to me!

My name is Allison Ngo and I’m currently serving as the CNH KIWIN’S Key Club District Membership Development and Education Chair! Whew, that’s handful to say, isn’t it? Even I’m a little bit out of breath, so feel free to shorten it to MD&E! Anyways, a little bit about me. I’m an incoming senior (insert unenthusiastic cheering) at Segerstrom High School in Jet Division! Some fun facts: I sleep a lot, I’m pro pineapple on pizza, I sleep a lot, I also drink a lot of boba, I can’t eat spicy food, and did I mention I sleep a lot?? Well, I do, and what better time to sleep a lot than the SUMMERTIME? I hope you guys are all having a great summer so far and District Board looks forward to seeing all of the service each club will be able to put forth. Words can’t begin to describe my KIWIN’S experience so far, and I can tell that it will only continue to grow and grow better as I see more KIWINNERS come and dedicate their time and effort for the care of others. Let’s have a great term together!
KIWANIS FAMILY & FOUNDATION Hanna Garcia HELLO HELLO CNH KIWIN’S!! It’s me! Your Kiwanis Family and Foundations Chair, Hanna Garcia! Wow, the term is only just beginning and I’m already looking forward to all the new memories we’ll make. To start, here’s a little about me: I love sweet potatoes, I was traumatized by a cat named Karma when I was younger, and Mulan is my favorite movie of all time! I am a dad joke enthusiast and a generally punny person. I really love puzzles and baking so if anyone has a 1000+ piece puzzle they would like to work on together while baking cookies please let me know. I’m honored to serve as your KFF Chair for this term, and I’m excited to meet all the new faces! With that, I have one last message: DON’T FORGET TO TURN IN YOUR KRF!!
TECHNOLOGY CHAIR Jackie Camarillo Hi CNH KIWIN’S! My name is Jackie Camarillo, and I am your District Technology Chair for the 2018-2019 term. I am an incoming senior from Rancho Campana High School in Turquoise Division. I am half mexican and half filipino and I love soda. I enjoy watching television & movies. I love all kinds of music & in my free time I play the ukulele. I watch Ratatouille at least once a week. I joined KIWIN’S my sophomore year and immediately fell in love. My junior year, I was my club technology chair, divisional film editor, and I was on the district technology committee. This experience let my KIWIN’S passion grow more and helped me gain the knowledge I needed to better myself as a responsible person & and a better editor. I am very excited to be working for the district and creating various content for KIWIN’S!
AWARDS & RECOGNITION Jaime Wu Hello! My name is Jaime Wu and I am proud to serve as the Awards and Recognition Chair for the 2018-2019 term! I’m excited to give back to my community through service and spread the message of KIWIN’S this term. Let me tell you a little about myself: I am an incoming senior at Adolfo Camarillo High School where I served as Vice President, Awards Chair, and Freshman Class Representative. As a freshman, I was introduced to KIWIN’S by my tennis teammates. Hesitantly, I joined and I can now say it has been one of the best and most rewarding experiences of my high school career. This year, as Awards and Recognition Chair, I hope to increase awards participation and acknowledge our District’s accomplishments. Beside KIWIN’S, I play two varsity sports: tennis and swimming. Whether doing athletics or a board game, I am very competitive. My wardrobe includes an excessive amount of overalls and mom jeans. When school is out, I love traveling and exploring cultures around the world. I’m excited to see what this term has to offer. I encourage all of you to step out of your comfort zone to make the most out of this term. Contact me anytime! P.S. cherries are superior to grapes

I am an incoming senior at Rancho Campana High School in Turquoise Division! I am completely obsessed with dogs (especially corgis) and I prefer DC Comics over Marvel Comics. Joining KIWIN’S my sophomore year, I immediately fell in love with the organization. Seeing the immense passion the members had at my first Fall Rally was life-changing and was my “KIWIN’S moment.” This past term, I was an EA to Turquoise Division and was a member of the Special Projects Committee, where I was able to further serve the club and grow as a member alongside amazing people from all over our district. I am so humbled to have been given the opportunity to serve all of you and I hope to meet more of you throughout the term! Stay tuned for the summer DCON hints and GO TO DCON 2019!!!!!

MAJOR EMPHASIS Our major emphasis is Live2Learn, an organization focused on promoting education and builing literary skills in children from the ages of 5 to 9. This program not only creates endless possibilities to strengthen the common goal of service, but also allows each CNH KIWIN'S member to develop into a well-rounded individual community leader and lifelong advocate for children's education. Realizing the need and interest in supporting the Major Emphasis Program through hands on service, a new service initiative has been created on a two-year basis. All of the hands on service provided to children by Key Club International members can be directed to a single area of need to make a substantial impact. This service initiative directs and focuses the attention of KIWIN'S members to serve children in a specific hands-on approach.
DATION.ORG FOR MORE INFO!
MINOR EMPHASIS Our minor emphasis is PTP, which stands for Pediatic Trauma Program. The purpose of this program is to develop local service projects to educate people of children’s safety and to decrease the number of children who are severely injured or killed due to traumatic unintentional injuries.
90% of unintentional injuries can be prevented! The Pediatric Trauma Program is heavily supported through the generous donations from the clubs and members of the Kiwanis Family, and through fundraisers like Fall Rally North and Fally Rally South. These donations go towards grants to partnered hospitals, Kiwanis and Service Leadership Program clubs, and PTP safety items. The money that we raise also goes towards the training of pediatric doctors, nurses, and first responders. The funds raised for this program will also help to purchase the much needed pediatric equipment.
PARTNERS IN SERVICE Key Club International participates with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals by sponsoring fundraising events. Key Club members also participate in service projects at their local children’s hospital.
Nickelodeon joined the Kiwanis family as a 2013 Vision Partner of Kiwanis International with a focus on its Big Help initiative, which addresses issues in service, education, the environment and health. Learn more about Nickelodeon’s Big Help efforts, the Halo Awards program and Day of Play at pro-social.nick.com or nick.com/thebighelp.
Since 2014, Key Club International has been partnering with the Thirst Project during the Month of March to participate in the "Dirty Little Secret" campaign. In March, and for all of World Water Day with the help of Key Club International, the Thirst Project is telling the world's biggest dirty little secret - 748 Million people on our planet do not have access to safe, clean drinking water.
Since 1994, Key Club International has been Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF and over the years has raised nearly $5 million for iodine deficiency programs worldwide, and HIV and AIDS programs in Kenya and Swaziland. UNICEF helps to provide for children’s needs in more than 150 developing countries through community-based services in primary health care, basic education and safe water and sanitation.
Rustic Pathways has 30 years of experience leading international education and service programs for students, with over 130 programs in 20 countries. Recognizing our shared values, Rustic Pathways partnered with Key Club to provide members with the opportunity to broaden their global perspective while performing meaningful service projects around the world.
For decades, Key Club International has partnered with the March of Dimes to give every baby a healthy start. Key Club members raise thousands of dollars annually through various programs, including collecting change, holding dances and taking part in March of Dimes’ signature event, March for Babies.

featured june ARF’s DUCK-A-THON // LA QUINTA, JET Huntington Beach Pier was colored bright yellow with countless rubber ducks at the 26th annual AltaMed Duck-A-Thon! Volunteers woke up at 9:00 AM to head over to the beach, eager to help such an iconic event. Upon arriving at the designated location, volunteers were assigned various tasks that were stationed all throughout the beach. Jobs included managing the concession stand, overseeing the decoration and raffle booths, running the game tents, and directing the numerous attendees. Due to our fairly large turnout, some stations had a profusion of volunteers, specifically the concession stand. A few people were not able to work, given the small working space and large amount of volunteers. However, the dilemma was easily solved by asking the accommodating supervisors to switch jobs. Despite that one complication, the event continued very smoothly. People of all ages came to every booth, providing a great opportunity to socialize with the members of our community. Volunteers at the duck decorating booth specifically had a wonderful time, helping creative children paint and glue pompoms to their very own rubber ducks, while those at the raffle stand laughed in enjoyment as winners’ faces glowed with excitement. Though each booth was consistently busy, the workload did not feel exhausting, most likely due to the fun and lively environment provided. Towards the end of the shift, a club from Huntington Beach High School arrived, ready to take over our tasks. The transition was fairly easy, and after explaining how to do the job, members were released and were able to freely explore the event. Overall, Duck-A-Thon proved to be a wonderful volunteer experience. With plenty of fun moments and times of hard work, members went home that day, not only proud of what they had contributed to their community but also the relationships they formed with individuals. As a result, La Quinta KIWIN’S cannot wait for the 27th annual Duck-A-Thon!

KRISPY KREME // TORRANCE, DIAMOND WOAH! A giant line forms as the people eagerly wait to buy Krispy Kreme donuts after a long day of hard work. Torrance High School KIWIN’S proudly presented and held one of their all time favorite fundraisers, Krispy Kreme! Which involved in a large number of customers, fun, spirit, and of course...donuts! KIWIN’S members who volunteered to participate in this fundraiser went towards the center of the campus where they met the club president. Volunteers cautiously listened on instructions given by the president on what to do and what not to do. Afterwards volunteers spreaded throughout their perspective areas. Some were in charge of the financial services, some were in charge of giving out the donuts, some were in charge of promoting the fundraiser throughout the campus, and some were in charge of keeping the spirit high and strong! Happiness, laughter, and a large number of donut-hungry people was what really brought this fundraiser and the team together. The customers were astonished looking at us and seeing us as something more than just a club. In fact, I am positive that they will be joining us and become new members next year. We ran out of donuts so fast that one of us had to sprint halfway across the campus and back just to resupply! Seeing the customers happily eat their donuts, volunteers joyfully serve their community, and day becoming more and more brighter, signifies that the fundraiser was a success. Although I see that we need to improve our running-for-donuts skills, I can understand why this one of our favorite fundraisers to hold. With that being said, here is to many more!
