I’ve had a wonderful term this year so far, and I have really appreciated all you hardworking members! In MRFs, secretaries have the option to leave me messages on how their club is doing, and a popular topic was the installation of a new cabinet. If you are a new cabinet member of your club, I congratulate you, and I hope your term has been treating you as well as mine has!

Ultimately, I’m really excited for the rest of the school year! If you’re a freshman new to Key Club, my advice for you is to explore your opportunities in this organization, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone... and maybe even apply for a cabinet position (such as a Freshman Representative).

OCTOBER SERVICE PROJECT IDEAS

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF began 66 years ago to help kids who needed more than candy. Since then, children all over America have gone door-to-door on Halloween with UNICEF collection boxes, calling out, "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF!" They have helped to raise more than $175 million for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF since 1950.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

The U.S. Fund meets Charity Navigator's highest ratings for transparency, accountability and administration. Out of every dollar spent, 90 cents goes toward helping children. We spend just 7 cents on fundraising costs, and 3 cents on administration.

MY JOURNEY THROUGH KIWIN'S WAS PRETTY CONFUSING BUT ALSO FUN. WHEN I FIRST HEARD OF KIWIN'S I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS AN ALL-ASIAN ORGANIZATION BUT NOW I THINK ABOUT IT, I WAS WRONG. EVER SINCE SOPHOMORE YEAR KIWIN'S HAS SHAPED ME INTO A BETTER PERSON INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE CLUB, TILL THIS DAY I'VE BEEN A BETTER LEADER DUE TO THE FACT THAT KIWIN'S HAD A BIG IMPACT IN MY HIGH SCHOOL ATMOSPHERE.

I JOINED KIWIN’S IN MY FRESHMAN YEAR. AT THE TIME I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT THE CLUB WAS REALLY ABOUT AND DIDN’T GO OUT TO EVENTS. THE FIRST EVENT I WENT TO WAS ACTUALLY VOLUNTEERING FOR THE ROSE FLOAT PARADE WHERE VOLUNTEERS HELPED DECORATE THE FLOATS. BUT AT THE EVENT THEY HAD SO MANY VOLUNTEERS, MANY OF US DIDN’T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO. HOWEVER, I MET SEVERAL FRIENDS FROM OTHER SCHOOLS, DIVISIONS, AND CLUBS! THE NEXT YEAR I APPLIED FOR CABINET AND WAS PUBLICITY. THE YEAR AFTER I RAN FOR THE POSITION OF SECRETARY. THIS YEAR I AM PRESIDENT. KIWIN’S HAS BEEN A BIG PART OF MY HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE, TEACHING ME HOW TO STEP UP AND TAKE LEAD. I’VE MET PEOPLE WHO I WILL BE FRIENDS FOR LIFE WITH, PEOPLE WHO INSPIRE ME TO DO BETTER EVERYDAY, PEOPLE WHO I CAN CONNECT WITH AND TALK TO. I DON’T KNOW WHO I WOULD BE WITHOUT KIWIN’S, AND I’M SO THANKFUL TO BE A PART OF THIS OHANA.

“I FIRST JOINED KIWIN'S WHEN I WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL. MY FRESHMEN MENTOR, WHO WAS AN OFFICER AT THE TIME, CONVINCED ME TO JOIN. I LIKED THE FACT OF DOING COMMUNITY SERVICE BECAUSE I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED TO HELP OTHERS. I ALSO WANTED TO STEP OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE SENSE KIWIN'S IS A CLUB WHERE YOU WILL NEED TO COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS. I WAS VERY CONSERVATIVE IN 9TH GRADE COMPARED TO KNOW, KIWIN'S IS SOMETHING THAT HELPED ME BREAK OUT OF MY SHELL. IT HELPED ME BE LESS AFRAID TO TALK TO OTHERS AND NOT BE WORRIED ABOUT WHAT THEY THOUGHT OF ME. I HAVE MADE NEW FRIENDS THROUGH KIWIN'S, PEOPLE I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER BE FRIENDS WITH. IT HAS HELPED SEE THAT DOING COMMUNITY SERVICE IS SOMETHING I LOVE TO DO AND WANT TO CONTINUE TO IN THE FUTURE. KNOW THAT I AM AN OFFICER I CAN SEE HOW HARD SOME OF THE OFFICERS BEFORE HAVE HAD TO WORK IN ORDER TO KEEP KIWIN'S GOING AT MY SCHOOL. WITH KIWIN'S I HAVE LEARNED EVEN MORE ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT AN OHANA IS, WHETHER THROUGH BLOOD OR THROUGH A CLUB”

september: Camarillo

On Saturday September 16 4:30am-12:00pm, Camarillo KIWIN'S got up bright and early to drive down PCH to volunteer at the annual Nautica Malibu Triathlon. Turtles were assigned to construct a bridge that was integral to the race, as it allowed bikers to safely cross a tunnel filled with water. After hours of taxing manual labor, members were able to witness the fruits of their labor by directing oncoming racers throughout the course, warning them of potential hazards, and cheering them on.

October: El Capitan

In the month of October, El Capitan KIWIN'S had "Lights on After School" on October 26, 2017. Since we had a lot of people come out and help, we had to put two tables on each side of road so when the kids come it wouldn't be so packed and busy on one side of the road. For Lights on After School we did face painting for the kids. For face painting, we had a lot of options for them to choose from like a kitty cat, butterfly, flowers, ghosts, spiders, etc. The kids loved it! Lights on After School helps keep it safe and fun for the kids before Halloween.

RALLY RECAP

EACH FALL, WE HAVE OUR ANNUAL SUPER FESTIVE, CHEER FILLED FALL RALLY. FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH FALL RALLY, IT IS A DAY DEDICATED TO RAISING AWARENESS AND SUPPORTING THE PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PROGRAM. THE PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PROGRAM, COMMONLY KNOWN AS PTP, IS ONE OF OUR THREE DISTRICT PROJECTS AND HAS A FOCUS OF PREVENTING TRAUMA IN CHILDREN FROM INFANCY TO AGE NINETEEN. THROUGH SPIRIT BATTLES, PENNY WARS, AND MANY ICEBREAKERS, MEMBERS GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION AND GET TO MEET PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

“FRN IN MY OPINION WAS A SUCCESS. NOT BECAUSE JADE WON SPIRIT STICK, BUT BECAUSE I GOT TO SEE SO MANY OF THE MEMBERS I SERVE PARTICIPATING AND GETTING HYPED. I KNEW FROM THE START HOW WELCOMING FRN IS SO I ENCOURAGED THEM ALL TO BREAK OUT OF THEIR SHELLS AND THEY DID. FROM PUTTING MORE THAN FOURTY DOLLARS IN SAPPHIRE'S BOX IN PENNY WARS TO YELLING JUST AS LOUD AS NINA DURING SPIRIT BATTLES I SAW THE MEMBERS OF JADE BLOSSOM AND GROW AS KIWINNERS AND AS PEOPLE. FRN IS SOMETHING I WILL NEVER FORGET AS A SENIOR AND AS A MEMBER OF KIWIN'S. I'VE MET SO MANY LIFE-CHANGING AND UNFORGETTABLE PEOPLE AT FALL RALLY NORTH. AND I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE ANYONE AND EVERYONE TO ATTEND AND EXPERIENCE THE GREATNESS OF FALL RALLY NORTH” -RYAN MARIVELES POQUIS, JADE DIVISION FALL RALLY NORTH WAS ABSOLUTELY FUN. I GOT TO MAKE THE NEW BOARD MEMBERS AND SAPPHIRE. THIS WAS MY LAST FALL RALLY AND I WOULD’VE ASKED FOR A BETTER ONE NOT ONLY BECAUSE MY DIVISION WON THE SPIRIT STICK, BUT BECAUSE I WAS ABLE TO RAISE LOTS OF MONEY FOR PTP AND I GOT TO PIE KELLY MA -BREANNA FONG, JADE DIVISION “OF COURSE I WOULD GET SICK TWO DAYS BEFORE FRS, A COLD THAT WENT STRAIGHT FOR MY MOST POWERFUL WEAPON: MY THROAT. OUR FINAL SPIRIT NIGHT, THE NIGHT BEFORE, I WAS STRAINING AGAINST THE CHEERS AND DOWNING GREEN TEA & HONEY LIKE WATER. I WAS WORRIED, BUT MY DIVISION HAD MY BACK. AND WHEN WE WERE AT FRS, SURROUNDED BY EACH OTHER'S GLITTER AND GOOD VIBES, THE ENERGY WAS JUST PURE ELECTRIC. I SCREAMED THE LAST OF MY LARYNX OUT AT FALL RALLY, GIVING IT MY EVERY. THING. BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THE DIVISION GAVE ME. IT WAS MORE THAN HOW LOUD YOU COULD YELL. IT WAS THE ENERGY AND PASSION BEHIND IT ALL. NEEDLESS TO SAY A FEW DAYS LATER I DON'T HAVE A VOICE, BUT I'LL ALWAYS CARRY THAT LOVE IN MY HEART.” -REANNA NORMAN, TURQUOISE DIVISION “IT’S 9AM IN THE MORNING THIS DINO ONESIE IS MAKING ME SWEAT BUT THAT ISN’T THE ONLY THING. FALL RALLY, KIWIN’S BIGGEST FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR AND THE PLACE TO SHOW WHICH DIVISION HAD THE MOST SPIRIT. ME BEING THE DINOSAUR, I HAD TO SHOW WHAT MY DIVISION WAS ALL ABOUT. I’M NERVOUS OF COURSE - IF YOU’RE NOT NERVOUS YOU’RE NOT HUMAN - BUT THIS WAS MORE OF AN EXCITED NERVOUS WHERE I DIDN’T CARE WHAT HAPPENED, I JUST CARED THAT I WAS A PART OF IT. SAVING LIVES - THAT’S WHAT TODAY IS ABOUT - NOT JUST CHEERING AND YELLING. IT WAS A PLACE WHERE WE JUST GOT LIT HAHA YELLING OUR CHEERS. I WAS SO EXCITED, I THOUGHT I COULD DO A BACKFLIP. FALL RALLY GAVE ME A PLACE TO LET OUT ALL MY STRESS AND MY FRUSTRATION. JUST YELLING IT OUT; LETTING IT GO. AFTERWARDS, WHILE MY VOICE WAS HOARSE AND BODY SORE FROM JUMPING AROUND, I WAS GOOD. I FELT GOOD BECAUSE ALL MY STRESS FROM SCHOOL, COLLEGE APPS, CLUBS - EVERYTHING JUST WENT AWAY. THAT IS WHAT FALL RALLY ALLOWED ME TO DO” -FERNANDO AGUILAR JR., DIAMOND DIVISION

“I WAS COMPLETELY SPEECHLESS. ALL I COULD FEEL WAS EMOTIONS RUNNING THROUGH ME WHEN THEY ANNOUNCED JET DIVISION WON. IT’S BEEN WAY TOO LONG. I WAS SO PROUD TO BE THE SPIRIT CAPTAIN THAT BROUGHT IT HOME. MY SPIRIT COMMITTEE IS ONE OF THE HARDEST WORKING PEOPLE I HAVE EVER MET IN MY LIFE. ALL THE MEMBERS OF JET DIVISION WORKED THEIR BUTTS OFF TOO AND I ADMIRE EVERYONE SO MUCH FOR THAT. I COULD NEVER ASK FOR A BETTER DIVISION AND A BETTER GROUP OF PEOPLE TO CALL MY FRIENDS. SCREAMING AND SHOUTING AND HYPING WITH THEM WAS SOMETHING I WON’T FORGET. BUT WHAT WAS IMPORTANT WAS THAT WE HAD FUN HAHHA. MY MAIN FOCUS FOR SPIRIT CAPT WAS THAT PEOPLE ENJOYED THEIR FALL RALLY NO MATTER IF WE WON OR NOT. BUT WE DID BOTH!” -CALVIN TRAN, JET DIVISION “THE LAST FALL RALLY I WENT TO WAS 3 YEARS AGO. IT MEANT SO MUCH TO ME TO COME BACK AND ATTEND BOTH FALL RALLY NORTH AND SOUTH THIS YEAR. I FELT WAVE OF NOSTALGIA. IT’S A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE TO SEE HOW DIVISIONS HAVE GROWN OVER THE YEARS, AND I NOW KNOW WHY CNH KIWIN’S DIVISIONS ARE NAMED AFTER ROCKS- WE ARE TRULY GEMS. I’VE BEEN DEDICATING THE PAST 3 YEARS OF MY LIFE TO THIS ORGANIZATION AND I’M TOO GRATEFUL I CAN CONTINUE MY MEMBERSHIP IN KIWANIS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. IF YOU DIDN’T GET TO EXPERIENCE THE UNIQUE MEMORIES AT FALL RALLY, COME TO DCON 2018, AND YOU’LL BE EXPOSED TO CNH KIWIN’S ON A WHOLE NEW LEVEL” -HOLLY HUH YEH, DISTRICT SECRETARY “THIS FALL RALLY WAS MY FIRST FALL RALLY AND WAS ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE. BEING TOGETHER WITH SO MANY PEOPLE RAISING MONEY FOR PTP WAS SOMETHING GREAT. I LEARNED THAT KIWIN'S HAS A LOT OF IMPACT IN HELPING OTHERS.” -JACKIE CAMARILLO, TURQUOISE DIVISION “JAGUARS AND DRAGONS: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WELCOMING ME TO MY FIRST FALL RALLY NORTH. YOUR SPIRIT, OHANA, AND DEDICATION ARE SUCH AN INSPIRATION. POLAR BEARS, DINOS, OTTERS, GATORS, MANATEES, ORCAS, AND TURTLES: I’VE SPENT MY LAST FOUR YEARS WITH YOU GUYS AND ONCE AGAIN, YOU’VE AMAZED ME. WOW! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING WITH YOUR OHANA AT FALL RALLY TO FUNDRAISE FOR THE PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PROGRAM. I AM SO PROUD OF YOU! I ENCOURAGE ALL TO ATTEND EVERY FALL RALLY THAT YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO. PERSONALLY, I’VE EXPERIENCED MY LAST, BUT THAT’S NOT THE CASE FOR EVERYBODY. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE TIME YOU HAVE LEFT. HOWEVER, IF THIS WAS ALSO YOUR LAST, KNOW THAT IT DOESN’T STOP HERE. WE STILL HAVE OTHER DISTRICT EVENTS COMING UP - ROSE FLOAT DECORATION, THE AWAKE-A-THON, AND CASE 42: SEARCH AND SERVICE AKA DISTRICT CONVENTION!! IT WAS GREAT TO SEE ALL OF YOU THROUGHOUT BOTH FALL RALLYS. THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU!! I FEEL GOOD, OH I FEEL SO GOOD *THRUST* I FEEL FINE, ALL OF THE TIME.
