Hosting a Potluck BBQ

To save money when hosting a barbecue, ask guests to bring side or dessert dishes to share. This will save you time and money. For the main dish, make something a little different, like Vegetable Beef Packets (featured in this newsletter). Dishes like this are easy to make for a group of people. For drinks, avoid soda and sugary beverages. Instead, add fresh fruit like lemons, limes, strawberries, or apples to water for a healthy alternative. Low-fat or fat-free milk is also a great drink choice.

Back to School Snacks The school year is right around the corner and we all know what that means- busy, busy schedules. Being on the go all the time can make it difficult to find time to eat. It can also make healthy choices seem impossible. If your kids are going from activity to activity, you know they need to keep their energy up. One way to keep your kids energetic is with healthy snacks. Healthy snacks are a great way to help kids get all the nutrients they need to be happy and healthy. Snacks can also help kids maintain a healthy weight and keep them going between meals. Great on-the-go snacks include: sliced veggies with hummus or peanut butter, cheese and fruit, yogurt with nuts and dried-fruit, or popcorn. These items are easy to grab and go, and require little preparation time. They are also full of vitamins, fiber, and protein which help kids avoid feeling hungry between meals. At home, you can help your kids make healthy snack choices by having items like fruits and vegetables ready. Keep vegetables sliced in the refrigerator and fruit where it is easy to reach. Offering kids healthy choices and letting them pick their favorites helps to encourage healthy snacking.
