DeSantis signs bill restricting minors from social media access
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a contentious bill aimed at curbing minors’ access to social media platforms The bill, designated as HB 3, received support from the House with a vote of 109-4, following its earlier passage in the Senate earlier in March
This marks a significant shift after Governor DeSantis had vetoed a previous version of the bill
House Speaker Paul Renner, a staunch advocate for tighter regulations on social media, has spearheaded the legislative effort Renner argues that unrestricted social media use poses a threat to children’s mental well-being and exposes them to potential dangers like communication with sexual predators

The bill, in its current form, imposes restrictions on minors’ social media usage, barring those under the age of 16 from opening accounts without parental consent

Additionally, children under 14 are outright prohibited from creating accounts Republican Representative Tyler Sirois, a key proponent of the bill, likened social media to a “dark alley,” emphasizing the need for stringent measures to

safeguard minors from its perils
Despite its passage, the bill faces significant backlash from tech industry players and free speech advocates Katie Blankenship, director of the free-speech group PEN America Florida, contends that the legislation infringes on constitutional rights and could invite legal challenges Opposition voices, including Democratic Representative Anna Eskamani, warn against the potential unconstitutionality of the bill and the state’s expenditure on inevitable lawsuits Supporters of the bill argue that its focus lies not on restricting content but on mitigating the addictive features of social media platforms
Republican Representative Mike Beltran, an attorney, underscores the deliberate design of these platforms to foster addiction, emphasizing the distinction between limiting harmful features and stifling free speech
Despite the contentious nature of the bill, its supporters view it as a crucial step towards addressing the social media crisis
Democratic Representative Michele Rayner acknowledges the ongoing debate surrounding the bill but emphasizes the importance of initiating conversations and taking action to tackle the challenges posed by social media
Governor DeSantis’ decision to sign the bill follows negotiations with House Speaker Renner, leading to significant revisions The amended bill now includes provisions allowing 14- and 15-year-olds to open accounts with parental consent, a departure from the previous version’s stricter stance
Notably, the bill refrains from specifying the social media platforms affected but delineates criteria concerning platform functionalities
The new law takes effect January 1, 2025

IFrom 'Tennis Dread' to Coach The Journey of Compton Russell
n the world of tennis, “love” literally means nothing, but for former professional Jamaican tennis player turned South Florida coach Compton Russell it's the sport that he adores
Russell's foray into tennis began as a little boy growing up in Kingston, Jamaica, seeing his older cousin Richard Russell dominating the game “I went to watch one of his important matches and decided I wanted to play also,” says Compton Richard began teaching Compton the sport during his spare time and subsequently, the younger Russell fell in love “I played my first tournament in 1964,” he says “And it led to me eventually becoming the Jamaican champion and then Caribbean champion ”
With racial tensions at a high in the '70s, Russell moved stateside to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in 1971 Experiencing segregation and seeing the mistreatment of black people simply based on the color of their skin then spurred a transformation in him “I became radicalized for social change and became more racially conscious,” Russell says of the time “When I came back from college a year later in 1972, Jamaica started to go through its social change with Michael Manley and Bob Marley What we were having was a political and social evolution of consciousness ”
While continuing to play tennis Russell began learning and following the philosophy of Rastafarianism, which included growing locs His choice to do so however would become a point of contention for members of society, so much so that while he was the local champion and more than eligible for the Jamaican National Tennis team, for two years, he wasn't allowed to play on the team
It was during this time that Russell crossed paths with Bob Marley, the iconic reggae musician and fellow Rastafarian The two
“In the seventies, we became a Rasta community. We were the dutty Rasta's, so it is quite an evolution that now I'm sitting in my living room and seeing so many ads that have a song by Bob Marley. When we weren't given a chance back then. – Compton Russell Russell
formed a friendship rooted in their shared love and commitment to the Rastafarian principles of unity and spirituality Marley, known for his advocacy of peace and social justice, saw in Russell a kindred spirit who embodied the
values of resilience and determination, and along with friend Allan “Skill” Cole dubbed him 'Tennis Dread' “In the seventies, we became a Rasta community. We were the dutty Rasta's, so it is
quite an evolution that now I'm sitting in my living room and seeing so many ads that have a song by Bob Marley. When we weren't given a chance back then Now there is an acceptance but we can't forget the 'down-pression' and push back on us simply because of our hair,” he says
With the help of Island Records Chris Blackwell, Russell was later given the opportunity to continue playing tennis all over the world, (United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Venezuela, China, Japan, and more) representing Jamaica with his remarkable skills and locs
In the mid-80s, Russell retired from professional competition and seamlessly transitioned into coaching which led him to leave Jamaica's shores in the 90s, for South Florida with his family that includes his wife Tracy, daughter Simone, and son David who is now also a tennis professional
As Russell reminisces about the game he points out that it has grown significantly since his days of idolizing Arthur Ashe and Stan Smith “Today's game has evolved in technique and strategy and continues to become more exciting with the evolution of equipment The game is at the highest peak it has ever been at,” he says
With the Miami Open 2024 set to culminate this weekend, he is asked if he has any predictions on who will win, but like any good tennis player, he understands that the game can be unpredictable Yet he indulges letting us know he has high hopes for Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the men's division and Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff in the women's
Of tennis and what it has done for him, he concludes, “I'm very happy that this sport could do all that it has for me. I'm lucky I have been able to play tennis all my life It has been a blessing and I give thanks for that ”

Jamaican minister Johnson-Smith highlights UN’s role in addressing global challenges
At a recent Diplomatic Day event, Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon Kamina Johnson Smith, underscored the crucial role of the United Nations (UN) in tackling escalating global conflicts and uncertainties while championing economic advancement
Minister Johnson Smith highlighted the pressing need for UN reform amid mounting challenges
She emphasized Jamaica’s steadfast support for the UN and its commitment to multilateralism as the most rational approach to addressing global issues
Stressing the importance of respecting international law, including sovereignty and territorial integrity, she reiterated Jamaica’s call for adherence to fundamental principles in international affairs
Global concerns and regional vigilance
Expressing deep concern over ongoing conflicts, Minister Johnson Smith condemned the war in Ukraine, attacks on Israel, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza
She also affirmed Jamaica’s vigilance regarding regional developments, particularly in relation to Guyana
Turning to the critical issue of climate change, Minister Johnson Smith warned that without adequate financing, the goals of the Paris Agreement would remain elusive, posing a significant threat to Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
She applauded COP28’s decision to operationalize the Loss and Damage Fund and urged both emerging and developed economies to fulfill their commitments under the Paris Agreement and the UAE Consensus
Combating illicit arms trafficking
Addressing the grave issue of small arms and light weapons trafficking, Minister Johnson Smith called for collective action from all nations

Guyana urges global condemnation of Venezuela’s Essequibo claims
Guyana has issued a call for international legislators to denounce Venezuela’s recent actions aimed at asserting control over the Essequibo region, a significant portion of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nation.
Anil Nandlall, the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, delivered this urgent appeal during the 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly
Nandlall underscored the imperative for parliamentary bodies worldwide to address Venezuela’s actions, stressing the importance of upholding international law and fostering diplomatic avenues for resolving conflicts
He emphasized that such condemnation is not merely a gesture of support to Guyana but a fundamental obligation in line with the principles of the IPU
Highlighting the influential role of parliamentary institutions, Nandlall envisioned them as a potent force for global transformation, particularly in promoting peace and understanding
He lamented the underutilization of this potential, citing ongoing humanitarian crises such as the situation in Gaza and democratic deficits in Venezuela
Drawing attention to Venezuela’s longstanding claim over a significant portion of Guyana’s territory, Nandlall provided historical context, pointing out that this dispute was conclusively settled by arbitration in 1899
However, he highlighted Venezuela’s
subsequent rejection of the arbitration award and its persistent refusal to accept the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in resolving the matter
Nandlall underscored the widespread condemnation of Venezuela’s actions by major international organizations, including the UN, EU, Commonwealth, OAS, CARICOM, and CELAC
He also noted the support extended by various governments, emphasizing diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalating tensions and
resolving the dispute through dialogue
Despite diplomatic efforts and interim measures imposed by the ICJ, Nandlall expressed concern over Venezuela’s recent legislative actions to annex a significant portion of Guyana’s territory
This move, he asserted, constitutes a breach of both legal obligations and the spirit of diplomatic agreements, further exacerbating tensions between the two nations

Turks and Caicos facing significant water supply challenges
In response to an unprecedented surge in demand, the Turks and Caicos Islands are grappling with water supply challenges, prompting the implementation of nighttime water restrictions by the Provo Water Company Limited
Over the past few days, residents have raised concerns about dry taps and prolonged waiting times for water restoration in their homes, putting pressure on the Provo Water Company Limited
Managing Director Robert Hall acknowledged the strain on the water supply system, attributing it to the remarkable surge in demand experienced in March 2024
Hall disclosed that the Suzie Turn tank, vital
for meeting two-thirds of the island’s water needs, struggled to keep pace with the escalating demand
With over 73 million gallons of water consumed in March alone, the tank faced depletion during the day, surpassing its capacity to refill overnight
Faced with operational hurdles, Provo Water Company was compelled to curb water outflow from the Suzie Turn tank during nighttime hours, affecting areas such as Lower Bight, Turtle Cove, and others
Failure to take action risked compromising the water supply to critical facilities like the hospital and the international airport
Implementing temporary measures, albeit
regrettable, became imperative to avert immediate water shortages
Taking a proactive stance, Provo Water Company initiated strategic investments to address present challenges and accommodate future growth
In January, a 1 5 million-gallon storage tank was commissioned on the western side of the island, with plans underway for a new 16-inch pipeline and infrastructure enhancements
Construction projects, including a proposed production plant in Wheeland, underscore the company ’ s commitment to bolstering the island’s water infrastructure
While efforts are underway to fortify the water supply system, public cooperation
remains pivotal
Residents were urged to conserve water, particularly in unaffected areas, as the Easter holidays loom ahead
Nightly water restrictions, reluctantly imposed from 9:30 pm to 6 am, underscore the urgency of prudent water usage
Property owners were encouraged to explore alternative water sources, such as backup cisterns, and exercise restraint in consumption during the specified hours
Hunger worsens as relentless gang violence targets Haiti’s capital
Gangs in Haiti's capital have escalated their violence, targeting crucial infrastructure and endangering lives
The recent attacks, which started on Monday and persisted into Tuesday, have seen a school set ablaze and pharmacies looted near the largest public hospital in the country
This wave of violence, ongoing for nearly a month, has seen gunmen targeting police stations, the main airport, and prisons, leading to the release of over 4,000 inmates Catherine Russell, UNICEF’s executive director, expressed concern over the situation, highlighting its repercussions on child health and nutrition, stating, “The violence and instability in Haiti have consequences far beyond the risk of the violence itself ” The crisis has exacerbated child malnutrition, with a 19% increase in severe acute cases this year, while 1 64 million people teeter on the brink of famine
“The violence and instability in Haiti have consequences far beyond the risk of the violence itself,” Catherine Russell, UNICEF’s executive director, said in a statement Tuesday “The situation is creating a child health and nutrition crisis that could cost the lives of countless of children ”
The violence has severely hampered humanitarian efforts, with road closures and attacks on hospitals impeding the delivery of critical aid UNICEF reports that only two out of five hospitals are operational countrywide, with 58,000 severely malnourished children deprived of essential supplies due to the unrest
Haiti's National Police are struggling to contain heavily armed gangs that control a significant portion of the capital, resulting in numerous fatalities and displacements Responding to the crisis, U S President Joe Biden authorized emergency assistance of up to $10 million to bolster Haitian security forces in safeguarding civilians and vital infrastructure
Efforts to establish a transitional presidential council have gained momentum,
with Caricom members advocating for its swift formation to address the ongoing violence The council, tasked with selecting a new prime minister and cabinet, aims to stabilize the situation However, internal challenges and resignations, such as that of René Jean Jumeau, have hindered progress Colonel Himmler Rébu, voicing skepticism about the council's effectiveness, proposed an alternative involving empowering a judge from Haiti's Supreme Court to facilitate leadership selection This suggestion, supported by groups like the Protestant Federation of Haiti, suggests an interim presidency led by a Supreme Court judge until a new prime minister is chosen
Despite these proposals, delays persist in forming the transitional council, with no imminent resolution in sight Internal issues and differing opinions among stakeholders continue to impede progress, leaving Haiti grappling with uncertainty amidst escalating violence and instability

True meaning of Easter lost on some youth
Next Sunday, March 31, is Easter Sunday a traditional religious day of celebration for Christians. In Florida, as elsewhere in the US, and throughout the Caribbean, Easter Sunday church services are normally one of the most well-attended, as entire families turn out to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ
Yet, although adults may adhere to the religious tradition of Easter, it seems like it's not the same for the youth Many churches, especially the traditional Catholic and Episcopalian churches, are concerned the youth membership of their congregations has been dwindling in recent years
Typing the word 'Easter' in Google, images results in a plethora of pictures of seemingly happy bunny rabbits and colorful eggs Is Easter, to this generation, more about Jesus or fluffy stuffed animals and egg hunts?
A recent survey conducted by a large church in Texas found although 82 percent of young people between the ages of 15 and 25 years of age are aware of the religious meaning of Easter, only 37 percent attend church on Easter Sunday Significantly, 33 percent did not believe Jesus rose from the dead, and 23 percent, doubted Jesus could have risen
In Florida, asking a similar question to some young people under 18, revealed a disconnect as to exactly what Easter means A small minority knew that Easter stands for Christ's resurrection, but more alarming, some didn't even understand what the resurrection of Christ means It was ironic that several South Florida teens expressed their intent of attending Easter services this year, despite not really understanding what Easter is all about One teenage girl said, “On Easter Sunday the entire family traditionally attends church service in the morning I go along because
my parents insist I do, but I don't really understand the fuss ”
The disconnect between a growing number of the youth with adhering to the religious tradition of Easter, and other religious commemorative days, has become a great concern for many parents, who worry that the true meaning of these Christian commemorations is quickly being obscured by more worldly endeavors
In the US church survey referred to earlier, 57 percent of the youth surveyed said they party a lot on the Saturday before Easter and looked forward to Ester Sunday to spend “happy time” with family members
There is a trend of thought that suggests the use of the Internet is sowing doubts in the minds of some young people regarding Easter and other religious festivals Several sites on the Internet rubbish Easter's religious meaning, while focusing on other aspects of Easter Many parents in South Florida have expressed regret that, unlike Caribbean schools, schools in the US do not teach, or have any focus on, Christianity Indeed, because schools in the US do not focus on Christian teaching, it is the responsibility of parents to instruct their children on the teachings and meanings of Christianity, and respective Christian celebrations
Listening to some youth discuss the importance of religion in their lives, it's borne out that many regard church as “boring”, and even as one young man said, “irrelevant to the modern world ” This opinion seems more related to the traditional church which features a more conservative order of service There's some evidence more young people attend nontraditional churches where services are characterized by lively music played by church bands, have large choirs singing praise lustily, and where pastors are usually more charismatic in their preaching than in the traditional churches
In the meantime, many parents would like their teenage children to be more entuned to the
religious meaning of Easter Some believe traditional Easier icons like the bunny rabbit do help
A c c o r d i n g t o K i m W i e r o f focusonthefamily com, “Bunnies, eggs, floral baskets, and more can become tools that parents use to bring a greater understanding of the message of Easter [to their young children] ” She states that since Easter is an opportune time for parents to talk to their children about God's love and mercy, the Easter bunny can be used as a representation of God's true character
For example, Easter bunnies “ are white as snow because Jesus takes all sin away (Isaiah 1:18b),” “have big ears that are quick to listen” (James 1:19), “are quiet in prayer, but hop with thanksgiving and rejoicing, (Philippians 4:4-6), ” and “have big feet to go tell others about Jesus, (Matthew 28: 19-20) ”
A Florida pastor concurs, saying: “It's becoming more challenging to motivate young people to attend church or to teach them about Christian milestones like Easter Therefore, using fun and innovative means is a great way to teach the youth about Easter's true meaning and attract them to attend church They must hold true to these principles which have remained a vital part of life for many generations ”

Patience Has Its Rewards... Discover A private island resort in the Caribbean Young Island
In a world that moves at breakneck speed, patience is often relegated to the background, overshadowed by the urgency of immediate gratification and the relentless pursuit of outcomes Yet, there's an unspoken beauty and profound strength in patience, particularly within the rich tapestry of experiences among our global AfriKin This exploration seeks to unearth the virtue of patience, its impact on creativity and fulfillment, and its role in shaping the actions and worlds of individuals in South Florida and beyond
The Unexpected Gifts of Patience
At its core, patience is a journey with uncertain destinations and unforeseen rewards It's a testament to the strength of the human spirit, embodying the belief that eventually, you will arrive where you need to be, even if the reward isn't what you expected This realization often comes after a period of tunnel vision, where the focus on a singular goal blinds one to the beauty of the process For people of color, this journey is imbued with layers of resilience and determination, navigating a landscape that frequently demands more yet offers less In embracing patience, there's an awakening to the rewards hidden in the wait the unexpected joys, the strength forged in adversity, and the deep-seated sense of accomplishment when the goal, albeit different, is finally reached
Time: A Fickle Friend or Foe?
The perception of time can either be a source of anxiety or a comforting companion For many in our communities, particularly in the vibrant, multicultural hub of South Florida, the illusion of time pressures individuals into a constant state of urgency, obscuring the benefits of a slower, more intentional pace Yet, when embraced, time reveals itself as an ally The ebbs and flows of life, much like the rhythms of the sea, teach us the value of moving with grace through periods of tumult and tranquility It's a lesson in holding firm amid uncertainty, a skill particularly pertinent to the diverse experiences of our AfriKin, where resilience is not just a trait but a legacy
Mind, Creativity, and the Chains of Impatience
Impatience often stifles creativity, trapping the mind in a cycle of frustration and stifled potential It narrows vision, limits understanding, and dims the brilliance of innovative thought Yet, when patience is practiced, it becomes a catalyst for creativity, especially among the AfriKin, whose cultural heritage is steeped in stories of endurance and strength The question arises: Are we amplifying anxieties in our thoughts, thus manifesting them in our actions and worlds? The shift towards patience offers a broader canvas for the mind to explore, unrestricted by the confines of immediate outcomes
Fulfillment, Simplicity, and the Mission
Accomplished
Fulfillment and simplicity often go hand-in-hand, a concept deeply rooted in the traditions and lives of our AfriKin The journey towards fulfillment is marked by an understanding of what truly matters It's in the simple moments, the quiet victories, and the personal milestones acknowledged not by the world, but by the self In South Florida's melting pot, these principles resonate deeply, reflecting a community that values the richness of diversity and the strength of unity
Call to Action: Harnessing Patience as a Strength
As we navigate the complexities of life, the question of whether patience is a strength or weakness in our character arises It's an invitation to introspect, to evaluate how we respond to the uncertainties of life For the residents of South Florida and individuals across the globe, the challenge is to identify moments where impatience has prevailed and to discover ways to cultivate patience It's about recognizing the power of a patient approach, not only in achieving personal goals but in enriching the fabric of our communities
The virtue of patience holds transformative potential, particularly for our AfriKin and the diverse communities of South Florida. It's a call to slow down, to embrace the journey, and to recognize the rewards that lie in wait We must remember that time is the destroyer of this world so that we may realize that what remains is who we truly are It is then that we realize who or what is important Time is one of our greatest teachers and we must allow ourselves the opportunity to enjoy it in each passing moment I once read we are here to enjoy life but we simply have not learned how to Let us explore the depths of our patience, for in it, we may find the key to unlocking our greatest achievements and deepest satisfactions

Malaysia rejects offer to host 2026 Commonwealth Games
In a significant setback for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Malaysia has declined an offer to host the event, citing time constraints, financial concerns, and inadequate funding support.
The decision comes as a blow to the quadrennial multi-sport event, which has faced challenges in securing host nations in recent years
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) approached Malaysia after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew its bid, citing escalating costs Despite offering 100 million pounds ($126 million) in supporting funds, Malaysia ruled out hosting the Games due to the short notice and the associated financial and logistical challenges
The rejection by Malaysia raises the possibility of the Games not taking place for the first time since their cancellation in 1942 and 1946 during the Second World War G o v e r n m e n t s p o k e s p e r s o n a n d Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil highlighted the prohibitive nature of the costs and time required for hosting the event on such short notice
The CGF expressed disappointment at Malaysia’s decision but affirmed its commitment to finding an alternative host However, the search for a suitable host continues, with other interested Commonwealth Games Associations being considered
The Commonwealth Games, traditionally contested by approximately 70 countries and territories of the former British empire,
has faced scrutiny over its relevance in the modern era and its place in an already congested global sporting calendar Furthermore, the event’s limited TV rights revenue compared to other major competitions poses financial challenges for potential hosts
Malaysia’s youth and sports ministry noted that the funding offered by the CGF would not cover the hosting costs, and the economic impact of the event could not be adequately assessed within the short timeframe
Recent editions of the Games have struggled to find willing hosts, with five of the last six held in Australia or Britain Birmingham stepped in to host the 2022 event after South Africa lost hosting rights, while Victoria had been the sole viable candidate for 2026 before its withdrawal Malaysia’s decision elicited mixed responses, with concerns raised over the lack
of preparation time and the potential financial burden of hosting The Malaysian Olympic Council initially proposed a downsized Games to mitigate costs, but ultimately the challenges proved insurmountable for hosting the event in 2026

The Mayor extended a warm welcome to Stephen on behalf of the City of Wilmington and saluted his contributions to the world of music as he carries on his father’s legacy
“Wilmington is proud of its connection to the Marley family, which continues to this day and wants all members of the Marley family to know they will always have a home here as Wilmington holds them in our collective heart,” the Mayor said
“It’s a very emotional moment here,” said Marley upon receiving a Key to the City “I do give thanks to everyone who made this possible my family Wilmington [is] home I have fond memories of running across the street to the park and my father I have fond memories here and thank you I’m not a man of many words I love you all I feel at home ”
