Amid Surge in U.S. School Shootings

Two students and two teachers were killed in a tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday morning, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) The shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at the school, surrendered to officers shortly after the incident and is set to be charged with murder as an adult. Another nine victims were rushed to hospitals, including three with gunshot wounds and five suffering from anxiety-related symptoms Authorities are unsure if any of the victims were specifically targeted

The Winder, Georgia, shooting marks the 45th school shooting so far in 2024 Of these,

32 have occurred on K-12 campuses, while 13 have been reported on university and college grounds Wednesday's shooting is the deadliest this year and one of 11 school shootings with four or more deaths since 2008 Last year saw a grim record with 82 school shootings in the U S the highest number since at least 2008

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the incident, with Biden stating, "Jill and I are mourning the deaths of those whose lives were cut short due to more senseless gun violence and thinking of all of the survivors whose lives are forever changed " He added, "Students across the

country are learning how to duck and cover instead of how to read and write We cannot continue to accept this as normal " At a campaign event in New Hampshire, Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the urgency of addressing gun violence, saying, "Our hearts are with all the students, the teachers, and their families " She described the shooting as "just a senseless tragedy on top of so many senseless tragedies", and stressed the need to "end this epidemic of gun violence " Harris underscored the issue's significance in the upcoming election, advocating for an assault weapons ban, universal background checks, and red flag laws "It is a false choice to

Remembering Cultural Icon, "Miss Lou"

Jamaica Commemorates 105th Anniversary of Dr. Louise Bennett Coverley

Jamaica will commemorate the 105th anniversary of the birth of Dr. the Hon Louise Bennett Coverley, affectionately known as “Miss Lou,” with a series of activities throughout September, celebrating her profound influence on Jamaican culture

Born on September 7, 1919, at 40 North Street, Kingston, Miss Lou's impact has been felt far and wide From an early age, she was captivated by the Jamaican Patois language, and her work in this dialect played a crucial role in its recognition as a vital part of Jamaican identity

Miss Lou's career spanned numerous fields, making significant contributions in both public service and academia She worked for the Jamaica Social Welfare Commission from 1955 to 1959 and later taught folklore and drama at the University of the West Indies Her work in these roles was instrumental in celebrating and formalizing Jamaican cultural heritage

From 1965 to 1982, she was a prominent figure in broadcasting, producing and hosting “Miss Lou's Views,” a series of influential radio monologues that highlighted Jamaican Patois and folklore In 1970, she began hosting “Ring Ding,” a popular children's television program that encouraged children to embrace their cultural heritage and showcase their artistic talents This show ran until 1982, reflecting her commitment to nurturing cultural pride from a young age

In addition to her broadcasting achievements, Miss Lou made significant contributions to literature and the arts She wrote several books and poetry collections in Jamaican Patois, such as “Jamaica Labrish” and “Anancy and Other Jamaican Folktales,”

helping to establish Patois as a "nation language" and inspiring other writers like Mutabaruka and Linton Kwesi Johnson

Her influence extended to film and music; she appeared in films such as “Calypso” (1958) and “Club Paradise” (1986), and her recordings of Jamaican folk music and shows, including “Jamaican Folk Songs” and “Children's Jamaican Songs and Games,” remain cherished Notably, she introduced Harry Belafonte to the Jamaican folk song "Hill and Gully Rider," which played a significant role in his 1956 hit "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) "

Miss Lou's pioneering spirit was evident

early in her career when, in 1945, she became the first black student to study at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), a milestone achieved through a scholarship from the British Council This groundbreaking achievement paved the way for future generations in both the arts and cultural advocacy

To mark this special anniversary, the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) will host a floral tribute at National Heroes Park in Kingston on September 7 Additionally, exhibitions celebrating Miss Lou's life and contributions will be displayed at JCDC parish offices and libraries across Jamaica from September 9 to 30

Activities throughout the month will include Miss Lou look-a-like and costume competitions, showcasing her iconic style and impact Schools and community groups will be encouraged to participate and engage with these exhibitions

Marjorie Leyden-Kirton, Director of the Community Cultural Development Services Division at JCDC, highlighted Miss Lou's lasting influence: “Miss Lou's dedication to promoting Jamaican Patois and culture has been instrumental in shaping our national identity Her work has not only celebrated our language but also inspired countless individuals both locally and internationally.” As Jamaica commemorates this milestone, the nation reflects on Miss Lou's extraordinary legacy, celebrating the profound contributions she made to its cultural heritage and the enduring inspiration she continues to provide

Haitian forces and Kenyan police launch joint operation against gangs in Port-au-Prince

Haitian forces, in collaboration with police officers from Kenya, have initiated a joint operation to drive criminal gangs out of one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, Prime Minister Garry Conille announced last week

Speaking at a hospital in Port-au-Prince, Conille provided an update on the operation while visiting three Haitian policemen who were injured during a shootout in the gangcontrolled neighborhood of Bel Air The area is notorious for its high levels of violence and poverty

“I am tired of seeing police officers being shot I am tired of going to police officers' funerals We must solve this insecurity problem,” Conille stated

While Conille did not offer additional details about the operation and declined to take questions during his brief news conference, he urged the Haitian public to cooperate with law enforcement by providing information that could help reduce crime Haiti has experienced a surge in violence

this year, with more than 3,200 killings reported between January and May Gangs now control 80% of Port-au-Prince, displacing over half a million people as they battle for control of more territory

“It's not going to be quick,” Conille warned “We must be patient ” Earlier last week, a police union reported that a female officer, Michelle Nathanielle Megine, was killed on her way to work, with her vehicle riddled with more than a dozen bullet holes Megine is one of roughly two dozen officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty this year

To help combat the escalating gang violence, a U N -backed mission led by Kenya has deployed around 400 police officers to Haiti In the coming months, additional police and soldiers from countries including Benin, Chad, and Jamaica are expected to join, bringing the total number of foreign personnel to 2,500

The U S military announced on Friday that it would deliver 24 additional armored vehicles to support the Kenyan personnel leading the security operation in Haiti The U S Southern Command (SouthCom) will transport the mine-resistant ambushprotected (MRAP) MaxxPros to Port-auPrince's main airport via U S Air Force C-17 cargo aircraft

These deliveries will bolster an existing fleet of 10 U S -provided MRAPs, with 34 Overhead Gunner Protection Kits, or “turrets,” also being installed to enhance the vehicles' effectiveness during joint operations with Haitian police

US Resumes Advance Travel Authorizations for Haiti After Fraud Concerns

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced it will resume issuing Advance Travel Authorizations (ATAs) for the Humanitarian Parole Program to Haiti, following a temporary suspension due to fraud concerns. The program had been paused several weeks ago after an internal review flagged potential issues

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), a branch of DHS, stated that the resumption also extends to applicants from Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela who seek to enter the United States with the support of a sponsor

The suspension in July was prompted by an internal report that revealed over 100,000 applicants were backed by just over 3,200 US-based sponsors, labeled as "serial sponsors " This raised red flags for potential fraud and concerns about human trafficking, given the disproportionate number of migrants sponsored by a few individuals

The review uncovered that only a small number of these sponsors were linked to fraud or criminal activities, which warranted referral to law enforcement

In response to the findings, DHS has implemented updated safeguards to the application process Applicants are advised to monitor their myUSCIS accounts for updates regarding their ATAs Individuals holding valid, unexpired ATAs are permitted to travel

New measures now require sponsors to demonstrate their financial capability to support the number of immigrants they sponsor "Serial filers" who fail to meet these qualifications or appear to be exploiting the process will no longer be confirmed as sponsors

DHS also reassured the public that all migrants admitted under the program thus far have undergone thorough screening and vetting, with no significant issues identified regarding their entry into the United States

Irony surrounds Clarke's IMF appointment

Most Jamaicans, understandably, felt a sense of pride at last week's news that Dr Nigel Clarke, the nation's Minister of Finance, has been appointed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as a deputy managing director This is a highly prestigious position within the IMF, and notably, it is the first time a Jamaican has held this role, despite other Jamaicans previously holding senior positions within the organization While Clarke deserves congratulations and well-wishes for this significant milestone in his career, it is impossible to overlook the irony surrounding his appointment

Jamaica became a member of the IMF in February 1963 and soon after received a standby agreement for special drawing rights a loan of US$10 million For many Jamaicans unfamiliar with the IMF's operations, this membership was seen positively It was hoped that access to loans from the IMF, along with other institutions like the World Bank and the International Development Bank (IDB), would alleviate the nation's financial challenges

Although Jamaica experienced relative economic growth in the 1960s, the 1970s presented increasing difficulties, particularly after 1972 when the government began implementing nationwide social reforms aimed at creating a more egalitarian society Unfortunately, this period coincided with rising global oil prices and increased costs for raw materials and consumer goods imported by Jamaica Facing mounting national debt and a negative balance of payments, the government under Michael Manley sought to address the economic issues without resorting to IMF assistance This reluctance stemmed from concerns about the IMF's track record of imposing policies that often undermined social development programs in developing countries

The IMF's approach, likened to a vast spider's web, involves offering loans to manage national debt and balance of payments, but with stringent conditions These conditions often require structural

adjustments essentially the reduction of social programs and implementation of harsh economic measures like currency devaluations and wage freezes The IMF's goal with these adjustments is to reduce national debt, frequently at significant social costs

The need to secure an IMF loan ultimately derailed the Manley government's plans for socio-economic reform. The trap of the IMF's conditions is evident: there is often little alternative for developing nations like Jamaica when faced with excessive international debt As a result, in countries under IMF agreements, wealth becomes more concentrated among the few, while poverty and inequality persist Successive Jamaican governments since the 1970s have had to turn to the IMF to manage national debt, resulting

in underpaid teachers, police officers, nurses, and other essential public servants, a deteriorating healthcare system, and pervasive poverty and despair among Jamaican youth

For the past six years, Nigel Clarke, a highly accomplished individual with a Rhodes Scholarship and a Doctor of Philosophy in Numerical Analysis, has served as Jamaica's Minister of Finance and the Public Service During his tenure, Clarke has rigorously implemented IMF-mandated reforms, aiming to reduce Jamaica's national debt to as close as possible to 60 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) His success in this area has made Jamaica a model for the IMF's belief that national debt can be managed in accordance with its stringent terms, albeit at great cost to many Jamaicans

The IMF's recognition of Clarke's performance as Finance Minister is reflected in his new executive role within the organization However, this advancement raises questions about the future for developing countries grappling with national debt and social inequalities If there is hope that Clarke's new position will influence the IMF to relax its harsh policies, such expectations may be overly optimistic As he assumes his role within the IMF, Clarke will likely become enmeshed in its established practices

Thus, while Clarke's appointment is celebrated, it carries a sense of irony reminiscent of the historical paradox where a field slave, through exceptional service, was elevated to a prestigious position in the Great House while fellow slaves continued to endure harsh conditions in the fields

No need to fear a Colonoscopy

Despite the urgings by health officials for people in the community to have preventative medical tests conducted to prevent the onset of serious diseases like cancer, a large percentage are not heeding this call While some people cannot afford these tests because of the related costs, other are plain scared. One of tests people tend to be more scared of is the colonoscopy, mostly because of the process required to prepare for the test, and amazingly, what the test may reveal

Retired South Florida gastroenterologist and now medical school lecturer, Dr Rafeel Jacobison, advises that a colonoscopy is imperative for everyone over the age of 50

He cited that the colonoscopy is a procedure that enables a gastroenterologist to evaluate the human colon or large intestine, using a four-foot long, flexible tube called a colonoscope

The thin tube has a camera and a light at its tip, which is inserted into the patient's anus and slowly advanced with the aid of a video monitor, through the colon

The purpose of the colonoscopy is to check if the colon is healthy and devoid of the presence of polyps or growths on the wall of the walls, which could be cancerous

People having a family history of colon problems, including colon cancer, ulcerative colitis and colonic polyps, tend to be at higher risk for colon polyps and/or colon cancer, and should have periodic colonoscopies

It's recommended that healthy people, at normal risk for colon cancer, undergo colonoscopy at age 50 and every 10 years thereafter for the purpose of checking for and removing colonic polyps before they become

cancerous

Dr Jacobison said that while most colonoscopies are conducted as a screening program for colon cancer, it is also useful to investigate symptoms like blood in the stool, abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, or radical changes in bowel habit

Referring to what some people refer to as the “hated” or “dreadful” preparation for a colonoscopy, Dr Jacobison explained that it is imperative that the colon be completely clean and free of fetal matter, prior to the test In most cases, patients are required to drink a special cleansing solution and large quantities of water 24-hours night before the procedure

“Most people dislike this because it requires frequent trips to the toilet,” said Dr Jacobison “But it's the only way to ensure the colon is totally cleaned The patient must pass very clear fluid before the procedure In addition to consuming a special purgative-like solution, patients should avoid consuming red,

blue and purple color food the day before the procedure, as well as foods with seeds ”

During the test, the patient will be given intravenous fluids

The patient is also attached by tubes to a monitor that monitors the heart rhythm, blood pressure and oxygen in the blood

Normally, the patient is also sedated, so that they are totally relaxed or asleep during the procedure, while lying on his/her left side or back

The procedure can take from 15 to 60 minutes, depending on whether or not abnormalities are detected

If polyps are detected, they most likely will be removed through the colonoscope Removal of these polyps isn't painful and is extremely important, as a means to preventing colorectal cancer

Dr Jacobsison also said it important to remove the myth that all polyps are cancerous

“This is untrue Overwhelmingly, polyps

are benign, that is non-cancerous Although a biopsy may be taken of polyps found during the test, this is a preventative measure and doesn't mean that cancer is even suspected,” he explained If a biopsy of the polyp is done, it is submitted to a pathologist for related examination, to determine if it is benign or has cancer cells

After the colonoscopy is completed, the patient is removed to a recovery room until the sedatives that were given, wears off It is advised that because of this sedation, patients be accompanied to the test site by someone who will drive them home It is dangerous for a sedated patient to drive a vehicle after the procedure, if they even believe they feel okay

If no polyps were found, or polyps removed without necessitating a biopsy, the patient may be given the results of the test prior to leaving the testing site However, if a biopsy was done, it could take a few days before they are given the full result

The doctor explained that some patients could experience some stomach cramping or bloating after the procedure

“This is because air has entered the colon during the procedure, but this discomfort quickly passes by the patient passing gas,” said Dr Jacobsison “If polyps were not removed, the patient can eat normally on returning home If polyps were removed, they may be placed on a bland diet for a day or two ”

He reiterated that colonoscopies “are routine, but vitally necessary procedures, which should not be feared It's always better to be aware of the health of the colon, than not to know and become a victim of a serious colon ailment like cancer, when it's too late ”

Health & WELLNESS

September is e Cancer ess Month

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, affecting the prostate gland a small, walnut-shaped organ located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The prostate plays a crucial role in male reproductive health, producing seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. In the United States, about 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetime.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the U S , following lung cancer An estimated 34,700 deaths from prostate cancer were expected in 2023 But the good news is it has a relatively high survival rate, especially when detected early

Several factors contribute to the likelihood of developing prostate cancer, including:

• Age: The risk of prostate cancer increases as men age, with the majority of cases diagnosed in men over 65

• Family History: Men with a family history of prostate cancer are at a higher risk, especially if a close relative, such as a father or brother, was diagnosed with the disease

• Race: African-American men are more likely to develop prostate cancer than men of other races, and they are also more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage

• Diet and Lifestyle: A diet high in red meat and high-fat dairy products and low in fruits and vegetables may increase the risk of prostate cancer

Obesity and lack of physical activity are also contributing factors

Symptoms and Early Detection

In its early stages, prostate cancer often does not present noticeable symptoms As the disease progresses, men may experience:

• Difficulty urinating or a weak urine stream

• Frequent urination, especially at night

• Blood in the urine or semen

• Painful ejaculation

• Pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or thighs

Because early-stage prostate cancer is often asymptomatic, regular screenings are essential for early detection The most

common screening methods include:

• Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test: This blood test measures the level of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland Elevated levels may indicate the presence of prostate cancer

• Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): During this physical exam, a healthcare provider inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to feel for abnormalities in the prostate

Diagnosis and Staging

If screening tests suggest the possibility of prostate cancer, further diagnostic tests are required These may include:

• Biopsy: A small sample of prostate tissue is removed and examined under a microscope to determine the presence of cancer cells

• Imaging Tests: MRI, CT scans, and bone scans help determine the extent of the cancer and whether it has spread beyond the prostate

Once diagnosed, prostate cancer is staged based on the size of the tumor, the involvement of lymph nodes, and the presence of metastasis (spread to other parts of the body) Staging helps guide treatment decisions and predict outcomes

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on several factors, including the stage of the disease, the patient's age and overall health, and the potential side effects Common treatment options include:

• Active Surveillance: For men with low-risk, slow-growing prostate cancer, active surveillance (regular monitoring without immediate treatment) may be recommended

St. Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda, Leading in Global Vaccination Rates

Thanks to Antigua and Barbuda, and St Kitts and Nevis, the Region of the Americas is the only World Health Organization (WHO) region to have exceeded in 2023 the vaccination coverages reported in 2019, prior to the commencement of the COVID-19 pandemic

In recognition of this achievement, PAHO Director Dr Jarbas Barbosa sent letters of appreciation to Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, The Hon Gaston Browne, and Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, The Hon Dr Terrance Drew In his correspondence, Dr Barbosa commended the countries “for the encouraging results in routine immunization coverage obtained in the last year, as reported in the joint WHO and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Estimates of National Immunization Coverage (WUENIC) ”

Dr Barbosa described the nations' commitment to vaccination as noble “The implementation of solid vaccination programs unequivocally

Surgery: A radical prostatectomy involves the surgical removal of the prostate gland and some surrounding tissue. This option is often chosen for localized prostate cancer

• Radiation Therapy: High-energy rays or particles are used to target and destroy cancer cells. This can be delivered externally or through brachytherapy, where radioactive seeds are implanted directly into the prostate

• Hormone Therapy: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) reduces the levels of male hormones (androgens) that can fuel the growth of prostate cancer cells

• Chemotherapy: Drugs are used to kill or stop the growth of cancer cells, typically used in more advanced cases or when other treatments have failed

• Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy: These newer treatments target specific molecules involved in cancer growth or boost the body's immune response against cancer cells

represents one of the noblest commitments to the population, especially children: protecting their health and ensuring that the economy, labor, and education, among other areas, are not held back by vaccine-preventable diseases and epidemics ”

Both nations were reminded that “it is necessary to continue making progress in order to return the Region of the Americas to the top of the global ranking in immunization coverage, maintain our achievements, and advance in the strategy to eliminate communicable diseases ”

Dr Barbosa said it is extremely important to ensure good coverage in all areas, and to use internal analysis to identify the population groups with the lowest levels of vaccination uptake and compliance with vaccination schedules For this reason, PAHO/WHO provides technical cooperation with innovative strategies to identify these groups and the barriers they face in accessing vaccination services

A prostate cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, but many men live long, healthy lives after treatment Regular followup care is essential to monitor for potential recurrence or side effects of treatment Lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy diet, staying physically active, and quitting smoking, can improve overall health and reduce the risk of cancer progression

Support from family, friends, and cancer support groups can also play a vital role in coping with the emotional and psychological impact of the disease

Prostate cancer is a complex disease, but with early detection and advances in treatment, the prognosis for many men is positive Understanding the risk factors, recognizing symptoms, and pursuing regular screenings are key to catching the disease in its early stages when it is most treatable If you or a loved one is diagnosed with prostate cancer, take the time to explore all treatment options and seek support to navigate this challenging journey

CARICOM chair calls for increased vigilance amid mpox outbreak

Dickon Mitchell, Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Prime Minister of Grenada, has called for heightened vigilance across the Caribbean following the World Health Organization's (WHO) declaration of the Mpox outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on August 14, 2024

Mitchell urged citizens to stay informed through updates from the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and local health authorities He highlighted the importance of recognizing and reporting unusual rashes or lesions, particularly for those who have traveled to affected regions, and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms arise

“Reporting any suspicious cases to local health authorities is crucial for enabling further epidemiological investigation,” Mitchell stated, underscoring the role of community vigilance in preventing potential outbreaks

The CARICOM Chair detailed a coordinated regional response, with the CARICOM Secretariat collaborating closely with CARPHA to ensure an effective response both regionally and internationally CARPHA, in partnership with Member States and CARICOM IMPACS, will monitor incoming passengers and facilitate the rapid identification of potential cases

While CARPHA has reported no cases of Mpox clade 1b in the Caribbean thus far, the situation requires enhanced surveillance and preparedness The current outbreak, notably severe in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries, has potential for further global spread

Miramar Threatens Lawsuit Over Controversial Trash Incinerator Site

Last Wednesday, the City of Miramar escalated its opposition to a proposed trash incinerator site near the Broward County border, threatening legal action if the plan proceeds. At a high-profile press conference, Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam and other city officials voiced their fierce opposition to the Opa-locka West Airport site, arguing that it poses significant risks to nearby residents

“Our message is simple: Miramar says 'no' to the incinerator,” declared Mayor Messam “We're taking action, and we are consulting experts and preparing to challenge the proposal in every way necessary and possible We will not be bullied into accepting a flawed project We are ready for a fight and determined to win ” This issue has been a months-long controversy Back in April, Miramar leaders, alongside prominent community organizations and elected officials from neighboring cities, gathered at City Hall to express their concerns about the proposed site The Opalocka West location, situated less than an eighth of a mile from West Miramar, threatens nearly a quarter million residents in surrounding cities like Weston, Pembroke Pines, and Southwest Ranches

The facility is intended to replace the Doral incinerator, which was destroyed by a fire in

its

The county has identified three potential sites for the new incinerator: Opa-locka West, an industrial area in Medley, and a return to Doral Despite a report indicating that Opalocka West had the lowest potential risk among the sites, Miramar officials argue that its proximity to residential areas makes it an unsuitable choice Environmental concerns are central to the dispute The Doral incinerator was known for emitting pollutants linked to severe health risks, such as cancer and respiratory problems The Global Alliance for Incinerator

Alternatives has highlighted the broader environmental impacts of waste incineration, including its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and pollution

In a proactive move, Miramar has launched a six-figure campaign against the Opa-locka West site As of June, the city had invested over $300,000 in the fight, with additional funds earmarked for hiring experts to assess the potential surface water, health, ecological, and air quality impacts of having an incinerator nearby Michael Goldstein, an environmental lawyer representing the city, announced that Miramar is prepared to file a series of lawsuits if the Opa-locka West site is approved

“If the county elects to approve the Opalocka Airport site as the site for the incinerator,” said Goldstein, “the city will file a host of lawsuits that will roll out over a period of time ” He added that nonprofit groups and environmental organizations are expected to join Miramar in its legal fight

The press conference was supported by various allies, including members of the NAACP Miami-Dade Branch, Florida Rising, and Democratic state Rep Robin Bartleman Bartleman highlighted the potential threat to the Florida Everglades and criticized the county for risking the preservation efforts funded by the state legislature

Annastacia Robinson of Florida Rising also pointed out the historical pattern of placing incinerators in communities of color, emphasizing that Miramar like previous affected communities deserves better treatment

In response to the proposed incinerator, Miramar has also initiated a petition demanding a thorough environmental impact assessment before any construction begins “We need to explore sustainable options for waste management rather than resorting to outdated methods like incineration,” Mayor Messam asserted “Our city deserves better ” As the Miami-Dade County Commission prepares to vote on the incinerator site, Miramar remains resolute in its opposition, committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of its residents and neighboring communities

Jamaican consultant shares his 9/11 survival story in new book

Oral Patrick, a Jamaican-born consultant and former World Trade Center employee, recounts his remarkable story of survival and recovery in his new book, Restorative Healing Begins With Rest: Overcoming Breathing Difficulties and PTSD After 9/11 Exposure

Co-authored with his daughter Deborah Patrick, the book chronicles Patrick’s escape from the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and his subsequent journey to health

Patrick, who was working as a Computer Systems Engineer on the 83rd floor of One World Trade Center, faced an unexpected turn of fate when he was laid off on September 10, 2001 “I survived 9/11 not once, but twice The first time by being fired from my job The second time by recovering after getting sick at the site of that job,” Patrick explains in his book

The narrative details Patrick’s volunteer work at Ground Zero, where he helped in the aftermath of the attacks Despite narrowly avoiding death by being fired a day before the attacks, Patrick soon found himself grappling with severe health issues as a result of his exposure to the site’s toxic environment He

Schools

developed respiratory problems, skin rashes, and became prediabetic, struggling with conventional treatments

Born in Old Harbor, Jamaica, Patrick’s educational journey took him from Marlie Mount Primary and Vere Technical High School to The University of the West Indies in Kingston, where he earned a degree in Physics and Mathematics in 1987 Shortly after graduating, Patrick and his family moved to the USA in search of better opportunities, driven by

In response to the growing concerns about school safety, Miami-Dade County has implemented a new security measure this week: random metal detector searches across various schools. The Miami-Dade school district has informed parents about these searches, which will be conducted randomly at different schools The district emphasized that the searches will be handled with care and aim to enhance student safety. A full-time security

detection team has been established to carry out these sweeps, allowing the district to cover more schools without diverting resources from other areas

In addition to the random searches, Broward public schools have introduced walkthrough metal detectors and wands at all high schools this year This measure requires all students, staff, and visitors to pass through metal detectors to enter the schools The Broward school district described this as an additional step to ensure safety and enhance security protocols

However, the implementation of these measures has sparked debate Miami-Dade

On September 11, 2001, Patrick was on his way to Manhattan for job hunting when he witnessed the Twin Towers being attacked “Shortly after 8 am I was on the New Jersey Turnpike, and I glanced towards the Twin Towers in the distance, thinking of how I could be at work there right now if I hadn’t been fired the day before,” he recalls As he watched the towers collapse on live TV, he was overwhelmed and stunned

Motivated by a desire to help, Patrick returned to the site as an unregistered volunteer, assisting rescue workers and families of victims His repeated exposure to the site’s harmful conditions led to worsening health issues, prompting him to explore natural healing methods “After consulting with several natural health practitioners, I learnt that almost any device will work again if you unplug it for awhile and then reboot it even our bodies,” Patrick says He found that rest, both physical and mental, was essential for his recovery

Patrick’s holistic approach to heal-

school board member Luisa Santos acknowledged the complexity of the issue, stating, "We have come a long way in student safety measure initiatives, but there is no conclusive research that metal detectors prevent instances of violence in schools " She added, "There are other investments we can make, especially if you look at the research behind them [Those] prove to be much better for school safety "

Concerns about potential negative impacts of increased security measures have also emerged Some parents worry that metal detectors could lead to increased police presence and potential police brutality,

In Restorative Healing Begins With Rest, Patrick hopes to inspire readers to understand and harness their body’s inherent ability to heal “I hope the takeaway from the book will be that readers gain the understanding of the body’s power to heal itself of degenerative and other diseases when we remove the interfering and agitating elements by resting,” he states The book is published by Balboa Press, a division of Hay House, and is available in hardcover, paperback, and audio formats through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Audible, as well as on Kindle

particularly in communities of color "I feel very uncomfortable about having metal detectors in our schools," said Angela Ortiz, a parent and member of the Miami-Dade County PTSA "I absolutely believe this will cause more police brutality within the schools, particularly with Black students " Both Miami-Dade and Broward districts are working to balance enhanced security with maintaining a safe and supportive environment for students as they navigate ongoing debates about the best approaches to school safety
