President’s Message On behalf of the faculty, staff and students of Copiah-Lincoln Community College, I want to welcome you to our Wesson Campus. All of us at Co-Lin are proud of the long and rich history of academic and athletic success or our Wolves. The work and fortitude of our student athletes have reflected positively on our institution in the past and we are confident the tradition of outstanding achievement will continue with our athletes of today. This past year was a historic one for our Co-Lin athletic teams both on the playing field and in the classroom. The Wolfpack football team coached by Glenn Davis won MACJC State Championship and appeared in the Mississippi Bowl. It was a season that proved commitment and determination by players and coaches will result in success of the team. We were also proud of our Lady Wolves basketball and the Wolfpack golf teams as they won MACJC State Championships in their sports. Our No. 3 women’s doubles team also captured a state championship. Our Athletic Director and Women’s Basketball Coach Gwyn Young was inducted into the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame this past spring. In the classroom, Co-Lin had three teams named the NJCAA’s No. 2 Academic Teams of the Year, men’s and women’s tennis and softball. Our golf team also finished in the Top 20. For the second year in a row, we led the state with 19 student-athletes receiving NJCAA Academic recognition. Since 2000, Co-Lin has produced 124 NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Our dedicated coaching staff is committed to helping our student-athletes achieve their personal, academic and career goals. Please enjoy your stay and let us know if we can assist you in any way.

The Co-Lin cheer squad begins the 2013 year with an outstanding performance at the Universal Cheerleading Association’s (UCA) College Spirit Camp at the University of Alabama. Twelve of the 15 Mississippi Community College cheer squads are co-ed. This year’s squad won overall third place in co-ed cheer and most improved. The Co-Lin mascots were recognized as the Most Collegiate Mascot in the Junior College Division. The squad has attended the camp the last 16 years. They have won numerous awards and trophies year after year. Cheering at Co-Lin is a year-round sport and requires hard work and dedication. Co-ed cheerleaders possess a unique combination of athleticism, entertainment and student leadership. It can sometimes be a difficult transition from the all-girl high school squads. Tryouts are held each April. Current and former Co-Lin cheerleaders practice with the new cheerlead6 | 2013-2014 Athletic Media Guide

ers starting in early March so they can be prepared for tryouts. In May the new squad travels all over the surrounding counties teaching private camps to junior high cheerleaders. This continues until the middle of July. Each camp lasts three to five days. The cheerleaders also hold Lil Wolf Cheer Camps for elementary students during the year. Participants cheer during home football and basketball games. The squad practices at least three to four times a week starting in May and continuing until school begins in August. Former Co-Lin cheerleaders have gone on to cheer at NCAA Division I schools including the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, the University of Southern Mississippi, Southeastern Louisiana University, and Delta State University.

Blue Wave Show Band

Blue Wave Show Band finds inspiration in water fowl The Co-Lin Blue Wave Show Band, in a continuing effort to bring culture to Hook Stone Stadium, once again goes to a reliable source for inspiration…television. No…there will be no Honey Boo Boo…some topics are too strange for even the Blue Wave. Rather, we go to the woods of Northeast Louisiana in search of the Duck Commander himself. From Burt and Ernie’s favorite bath-time tune to the hard driving song from “that little ole band from Texas” the BWSB will bring great music, powerful percussion, fast-paced, high-energy drill and colorful pageantry to the halftime festivities. And of course, it would not be a typical Blue Wave show without a musical pie in the face. You do not want to miss a minute of this very entertaining show. So get your hot dog early and sit back and enjoy… ”Just Ducky!”

Leading the Blue Wave Show Band this year is drum major Kenny San of Wesson. Head Colettes are Dana Sartin of Brookhaven and Elizabeth Meese of Wesson. Colette captain is Maggie Smith of Brookhaven. Color guard captains are Chelsea Parker of Florence and Ashtin Gilmore of McComb. Blue Wave percussion captains are Kason Smith of Brookhaven and Taylor Watson of Colleyville, Tx. The Blue Wave Show Band is directed by R. Shaw Furlow, Juanita Proffitt and Chris Warren. Dr. Shelley Smith directs the Colettes and the Color Guard and Michael Brothers is the percussion instructor. The band’s musical arrangements are by Jamie Foshee and Juanita Proffitt with percussion parts by Chris Warren.

Wolfpack look to defend State Championship By Dan Reich, Co-Lin Sports Information

The Copiah-Lincoln Wolfpack finished the 2012 season atop the Mississippi Community College podium and will look to defend their first State Championship since 1985, this season. Head Coach Glenn Davis guided the Wolfpack to a 9-3 record in his ninth season at the helm, a team that boasted the nation’s fifth ranked passing offense in total yards, and a No. 14 ranking in the NJCAA post-season poll. Of the 27 graduating sophomores on the 2012 squad, 14 signed scholarships to four-year universities, including 11 players who signed with Division 1 schools. The Wolfpack lose over 3,000 yards of offense from last year’s quarterback Chandler Rogers. Rogers, an Arkansas State signee, finished the season leading the MACJC in both passing yardage and touchdown passes. Also gone is Rogers’ favorite target, Joe Craig (University of Memphis signee), who led the Wolfpack in all receiving categories after a slow start to his season, and NJCAA All-Region 23 center Stone Underwood (University of West Virginia signee, who anchored the Wolfpack offensive line throughout 2012. The Co-Lin defense led the nation in interceptions for six straight weeks and finished fourth overall, snagging 23 passes. They will return most of their ball-hawking defensive backs and linebackers, but the Wolfpack will have to replace the pass rush and pass coverage skills supplied by All-Region 23 defensive end Jerrell Jordan and defensive back Jeremy Davis. OFFENSE Co-Lin spent most of the 2013 off-season trying to find a way to replace Rogers at quarterback. The two-year start14 | 2013-2014 Athletic Media Guide

er finished 2012 with 3,190 passing yards and 30 touchdowns, both numbers good enough for tops in the conference. Replace Rogers will be out-of-state signee, Daniel Fitzwater. Fitzwater (6-6, 235) led his Calvary Baptist Academy team to a 9-4 record and a Louisiana state quarter-finals appearance. Backing up Fitzwater will be Brookhaven High School product Zach Smith. In addition to Craig, the Wolfpack will look to replace receivers Mayes Hayes, a Southeastern Louisiana University signee; Darren Anderson and DeVonte Scott. The group accounted for 152 receptions, 21 touchdowns, and over 1,600 yards. Coach Glenn Davis is looking to returning wide receivers Casey Gladney (6’2, 185), Christian “Bubba” Keene (6’4, 195), Ross Hill (6’2, 195), and DeVante Nichols (5’8, 170). Gladney will use his athleticism and pass catching ability to continue right where he left off last season. The Columbia, SC, native caught 32 passes for 431 yards and four touchdowns in 2012. Keene, a Brookhaven Academy product, saw more playing time late in the season due to injuries and was able to show some raw ability, snagging 25 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns, including a late score in the Mississippi Bowl against Garden City (KS) Community College. Hill of Brookhaven High School and Nichols of Pearl High School, saw limited action, combining for 3 catches and 22 yards. Incoming freshman Germie Martin (6’0, 175) of Bogue Chitto High School, will try to work his way in with this talented group of sophomores. While the Wolfpack lose the 861 rushing yards and

Football nine touchdowns supplied on the ground by Southeastern Louisiana University signee Darius Guy, they will turn to sophomore Van Lee (6’0, 195) to continue to grow as a player and take the bulk of the carries in 2013. Lee, a Mendenhall High School product, showcased great vision last year, running for 422 yards and two scores on 104 carries. Pushing Lee for carries of their own will be sophomore Kelton Smith (5’11, 200), freshmen DeLance Turner (6’0, 205), and freshman DiQuan Davis (6’0, 170). Smith, a Copiah Academy product, did not see much playing last season due to injury. Turner is a Perry Central High School graduate whose physic has earned him the nickname “Tarzan” by his teammates, and Davis has shown off the speed that drew the coaching staff ’s attention while he was competing at Greenville-Weston High School. At tight end, the Wolfpack will turn to a trio of sophomores who spent all of last season at either another position or backing up sure-handed sophomore Jamie McCardle, who moved on to Mississippi College. Tyson McDonald (6’3, 255) has the most experience of the three. The Magee High School product averaged 8-10 snaps a game as a freshman. Jervarus Banks (6’2, 230) saw 10-15 snaps in his first year out of Hazlehurst. Darrien Hutcherson (6’7, 265) of Dadeville, Ala., will be making the move to tight end after spending all of 2012 as a defensive end. The offensive line unit is expected to be one of most experienced units in the state this year. Co-Lin returns four starters across the offensive front, while also expecting a group of five incoming freshmen to push for playing time. With the loss of Underwood at center, the Wolfpack are looking for sophomores Jacquel Johnson (6’5, 315), David Adams (6’4, 305), and Ryan Proctor (6’5, 325) to take control of the reigns of this very large group. Johnson started all 12 games last year at right tackle and is a Mississippi State commitment.

Adams, a South Delta High School product, was moved from defensive end to left tackle last summer and started the first two games of the year before an injury ended his season. Proctor supplied solid relief for Adams the rest of the year at the left tackle after being highly recruited out of Brandon High School. Added to the offensive line this year is former defensive tackle Xavier Dampeer (6’2, 310) who could see time at both guard and center. Dampeer of Mendenhall, is an extremely athletic player who adds more bulk to an already large group, and is also arguably the strongest player on the 2013 squad. Pushing for time across the front are incoming freshmen Jacob Flemming (6’5, 300) of North Pike; Nick Luckey (6’3, 275) of Magee; Zechariah Ray (6’7, 305) of Yazoo County; Garrett Keating (6’4, 280) of Adams County Christian School; Cullen Greer (6’0, 270) of Wesson Attendance Center; and Quintarius Willis (6’3, 285) of GreenvilleWeston. Defense The Co-Lin defense will look to return back to their pass picking ways they displayed early in the 2012 season while breaking in a new defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Otis Yelverton takes over the Wolfpack defense after spending the past few seasons as the defensive signal caller for the Contra Costa Comets of the California Community College Athletics Association. Coach Yelverton helped the Comets lead the Bay Valley Conference in overall defense while finishing the year as state runner-ups. Also joining the Wolfpack defensive staff is former CoLin All-American Maurice Johnson who will work with the linebackers. Across the defensive front, the Wolfpack will have to replace three Division 1 signees, including Terrell Hartsfield and All-Region 23 defensive end Jerrell Jordan, both University of Cincinnati signees. Tackles Anthony Cunningham (6’2, 285) and Philanteus Jarrett (6’3, 285) are Co-Lin’s only returning experience along the defensive line. Cunningham, out of Wayne County High School, recorded 34 tackles and 4 sacks while seeing action in all 12 games last year. Jarrett, of Hollandale High School, recorded 9 tackles during limited playing time. A group of talented freshmen will look to fill in the experience gap along the defensive front. Freshman Jonathon Calvin (6’4, 245) of Murrah is a player the coaches are counting on to create a pass rush from the defensive end position. Durrell Vanerson (6’3, 240) of McComb will also compete for reps at end, while freshmen DeMorris

Football Bedford (6’2, 240) of John F. Kennedy High School and Ryan Ducksworth (6’3, 255) of Taylorsville High School will split reps in the defensive interior. Jordan Harris (6’0, 230) returns at linebacker for the Wolves this season after leading the team in tackles throughout 2012. The Clarksdale High School product finished off 2012 with over 90 tackles, 7 of which were for a loss of yards. Fellow sophomores Darius Woodcox (5’10, 235) of Callaway and Jymal Ellis (6’4, 235) of Ridgeland will look to continue the tradition of strong play from the linebacker spots last year. Helping in the cause will be athletic newcomers Carroll Phillips (6’3, 235), Edward Muldrow (6’4, 225), Desmond King (6’1, 225), and Desmond Michel (6’0, 190). Muldrow, a sophomore out of Atlanta, GA, spent last season as a starter on the Contra Costa Community College defense in the CCCAA, while freshman linebacker Phillips, a graduate of Miami Central High School, joined the Wolfpack after spending 2012 out of football. King and Michel are Mississippi talents out of Southaven High School and Pearl River Central High School, respectively, who signed letters-of-intent with the Wolfpack this past February. All are expected to be contributors this season. The defensive secondary looks to be the backbone of the Wolfpack defense again this season with the return of multiple sophomore leaders and the addition of talented freshman. State University, the Wolfpack will turn to Brookhaven High School product, sophomore Greg Sims (5’11, 190) to build upon the superb cover skills he displayed last season which resulted in the shifty cover-man picking off three passes, while also recording 30 tackles. Looking to also build on success in 2012 is sophomore safety, Kalen Jackson (6’0, 205). In his first year out of Magee, the hard hitting deep defender recorded 84 tackles in run support while picking off two passes and returning one pick back 51 yards for a score. Strother expects Wolfpack soccer to makes strides in 2013 By Cliff Furr, Assistant Director Sports Information

The Wolfpack soccer team looks to make a statement in the MACJC South Division in 2013 under the direction of second year head coach David Strother. Nine returning sophomores from the 2012 team give Strother an experienced group to build from. The nine sophomores for the Wolfpack squad include starting goalkeeper Wesley Varner of Magee; midfielder/ forward Garrett Holden of Brookhaven; midfielder/forward Chance Holden of Brookhaven; defensive midfielder Mason Peterson of D’Iberville; defensive centerback Daniel Bird of D’Iberville; midfielder Dylan Sandidge of Natchez; outside defender Chrishun Smith of Jackson; forward and third leading scorer Da’Shone Lampley of Laurel. All eight of these players saw significant minutes last year and are expected to make even stronger impacts on the program than what they did a year ago. Strother worked hard on the recruiting trail to sign 16 freshmen to the 2013 squad. “We lost some key positions to graduation, but I have been very pleased with the way my recruiting went this year,” said Strother. Strother hopes those gains in recruiting will lead to a more dynamic offense and a deeper defense in 2013. “I knew that we were going to have to bring in players this season that had an offensive attitude toward the game, and I feel like we have been able to do that,” Strother said. “We’ve also been able to get deeper in some of our 20 | 2013-2014 Athletic Media Guide

defensive positions, and that will help give us some much needed substitutions whenever we begin playing 90 minute games in the humidity and heat of our season.” Strother, an alumnus of Co-Lin and former soccer player, is eager to take his program to new heights “Our goal for this upcoming season will be to put ourselves in situations to win games and be competitive in each match that we play,” he said. Strother expects the south division of the MACJC will be grueling as always. The MACJC state title has been won by a South Division team in each of the past six years.

Sophomore class to provide leadership in 2013

By Cliff Furr, Assistant Director Sports Information

The Lady Wolves soccer team enters the 2013 season hoping to build upon a 2012 season that featured a roster full of freshmen. During the 2012 campaign, there was only one returning player from the 2011 season, which means this team will not be short on experience The 2013 Lady Wolves will look to make strides the season with the leadership of eight returning sophomores include outside midfielder Abbie Graves of Roxie; outside defensive back Consuela Hadley of Laurel; outside defensive back April Gant of Laurel; forward Casherry Russell of Crystal Springs, MS; midfielder Caitlin Lofton of Natchez; forward Jane Bayless of Meadville; midfielder Shelby Strong of Wesson; and leading returning scorer Addison Wright St. Martin. Fifteen new players, 13 true freshmen and two transfers, will join the program this season. Second year head coach David Strother believes his newcomers will mix well with the veterans. “This large incoming class is exactly what this program needed for us to begin the climb toward success for this program,” said Strother. “As I recruited this season, I wanted to make sure that I was able to build around the ladies that I knew would be returning and help make us a competitive soccer team within the MACJC. I think that the competitive drive they will bring to this team is only going to make us stronger.”

Strother is encouraged by the work that his returners put in during the spring and believes their efforts have set the tone for a strong season in 2013. “I’m so proud of the girls that are returning because they believe in what we are trying to do with this program,” said Strother. “Our objective for this season is to grow. We can grow from where we were last year, grow from where we begin in the preseason, and grow thru our schedule to where we want to be at the end of the season.” Strother expects the South Division of the MACJC to be exceptionally strong once again. The MACJC state champion has come out of the South Division for eight years straight.

Smith comes home to lead Wolfpack baseball

By Cliff Furr, Assistant Director Sports Information

For the first time in over two decades, there will be new leadership on the baseball diamond this season. Long time coach Keith Case retired in the spring of 2013 after leading the Wolfpack for 21 seasons. A three-time NJCAA Region XXIII Coach of the Year, Case took his 2000 and 2005 teams to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Millington, Tenn. Case will fittingly be replaced by one of his former players, Clay Smith. Smith comes to Co-Lin after working 10 seasons as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator under head coach Hill Denson at Belhaven University. “I am very honored by the opportunity to be head baseball coach at Co-Lin,” said Smith. “Coach Case laid the foundation by teaching young men the right way to do things, on and off the field. It’s going to be fun to build on that foundation.” Smith inherits a group of sophomores that saw extensive action as freshman in 2013. Sophomores include Dominic Savage, Milton Griffin, Phillip Lott, Dylan Anglin, Gage Miles, Ryan Young, Konner Burke, Christopher Perry, Corey Funk, Mitch Little, and Casey Hurley. “We have some quality guys returning on the field for us,” explained Smith. “We are hoping that Ryan Young, Dylan Anglin, Mitch Little, and Dominic Savage can be guys that we can count on to lead the team. Mitch will be returning to the field after an injury last year, so hopefully he will be able to pick up where he left off for us. Ryan, Dylan, and Dominic all have seen significant playing time and with that experience, we are expecting them to have a good year.”

Smith and his assistant coaches Bryan Nobile and Ryne Tutor have been busy signing a freshman class that fills out the rest of the Wolfpack roster. Incoming freshman include Branden Canney of Loyd Star Attendance Center, Stephen Barnett of Terry High, Devon Zattoni of Mendenhall High, Wesley Watts of Northwest Rankin High, Jonathan Haydel of Houma, LA; Adrian Brown of McComb High, Alex Smith of Wesson Attendance Center, Blake Talbot of Houma, LA; Matthew Evans of Brookhaven Academy; Gregory Tierce of Ridgeland High, Jeremy Moore of Florence High, Jacob Strickland of Sumrall Attendance Center; Stevie Hubbard of Mendenhall High, Logan Smith of Loyd Star Attendance Center, Colby Whitfield of Brandon High; Steven Chisolm of Magee High; Tanner Parvin of Brookhaven Academy, Newt Brown of Gautier High; and Shane Brown of Simpson Academy. “Coach Nobile and Coach Tutor did a great job of holding on to some commitments that we had during the coaching transitions and we were able to pick up a few more quality players since I came aboard,” stated Smith. Lost to graduation are MACJC All-State pitcher/infielder Caleb Dugas (Northwestern State University), MACJC Second Team All-State infielder Gabe Wilson (Belhaven University), Tyler Simmons (Stillman College), MACJC Second Team AllState pitcher Tyler Case (Mississippi Valley University), and MACJC First Team All-State catcher Jonathan Santana (University of New Orleans). 2013-2014 Athletic Media Guide | 29

Lady Wolves softball strong on experience and pitching By Cliff Furr, Assistant Director Sports Information

The Co-Lin Lady Wolves look to return to the playoffs in 2014 after finishing 23-19 last season and missing out on the MACJC post-season play. The 2013 season saw the squad lose eight division games by three runs or less. Head coach Allen Kent knows how small the margin for error can be between winning and losing. “A clutch hit, or a play made here and there could have really made a difference in the outcome of many of those games for us last season,” said Kent. This year’s squad sees an influx of freshmen, along with some key returnees. Sophomores returning that expect to make an impact are MACJC All-State Pitcher Brooke Gonzales from Live Oak, La., utility player Hannah Roberts from Amite School Center, pitcher Meghan Johnson and catcher Kacie Berry from Copiah Academy. Missy Romero from San Antonio, Texas, led last year’s team in nearly every offensive category. Romero saw time in the outfield, but can pitch as well. Infielders Beth Fortenbery from Natchez Cathedral and Kayla Craft from Live Oak, La.; also return with experience from last season. Incoming freshmen should help bolster the pitching staff, as well as behind the plate. Payton Sheffield is a left- handed pitcher from Oak Grove, who helped lead her team to a state championship. Rheagan Welch from Bogue Chitto has a couple of state championship titles under her belt in the circle also. Breanna McKenzie from North Pike and Samantha Lee from

Lawrence County both will provide depth behind the plate and in the infield. Other freshmen expected to contribute are Savannah Johnston from North Pike, Adrienne Wallace of Bogue Chitto, Kaitlin Cooksey from Copiah Academy, Brooke Laigast from Hannan, La., Kristen Byrd and Julian Johnson, both from Lawrence County. Kent expects to see competition for playing time to heat up as soon as school begins in August. “Competition should be fierce for playing spots this year,” Kent explained. “We only return three everyday starters on defense. We’re looking for good contributions from the incoming freshmen.” Kent knows the South Division in softball is as tough as any division, in any sport, in the MACJC. The strength of the south will be further bolstered this season with Meridian entering the division. 2013 was a banner year for the Lady Wolves in the classroom. They finished as the NJCAA’s No. 2 Academic Softball Team of the Year with a 3.54 GPA. Six of the seven sophomores received NJCAA academic honors recognizing their high GPA’s. Graduating sophomores who have signed on to continue their careers at the senior college level include Kaitlin Moak (Mississippi College), Karla Beth Hux (Mississippi College), and Josie Porter (Belhaven University). 2013-2014 Athletic Media Guide | 33

2014 will be a new era in Wolfpack tennis

By Cliff Furr, Assistant Director Sports Information

Mike McIntyre and Copiah-Lincoln tennis are two things that have become synonymous over the last 30 years. The longtime Wolfpack tennis coach retired last season after leading the team for 35 years. McIntyre will be replaced by former Co-Lin women’s tennis coach, Brenda Smith. Smith, who also serves as the Dean of Student Services at Co-Lin, previously coached the Lady Wolves tennis team from 1997-2005. Smith compiled an overall record of 110-19 including six consecutive trips to the NJCAA National Tournament. Her teams won 21 individual state championships, two team championships and six teams ranked nationally. Five of those teams also placed in the top two NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year with the 1999, 2003 and 2004 teams recognized as the top Academic Team of the Year. Four players earned NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American honors and seven NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Smith returns only one player from the 2013 season and had a busy spring as she filled out her 2013-2014 roster. Josh Smith of Wesson is the only returning sophomore for the Wolves. Incoming freshmen include Coleman Carraway of Brandon High, Graham Watson of Brookhaven Academy, Ryan Thibidoux of Brookhaven High, Brandon Nettles and Tony Del Cid, both of Wesson Attendance Center. Smith also picked up two players who spent last year away from the courts in Brock Smith and Dwain Perkins. Smith, a Brookhaven Academy product, attended Louisiana Tech last 38 | 2013-2014 Athletic Media Guide

year and Perkins, a Natchez Cathedral graduate, was a student at Belhaven University. “I’m very excited to be back coaching tennis and I have great group of young men who will represent Co-Lin very well on and off the court,” said Smith.

Wolfpack golfers capture another MACJC State Title in 2013 By Cliff Furr, Assistant Director Sports Information

The Wolfpack had a banner year wining the MACJC State Championship after firing rounds of 296-292 – 588 at Dixie Golf Club in Laurel. Finishing second, four strokes behind, was East Mississippi at 592. Individually, Corbin May and Northwest Mississippi’s Chad Cupples were tied at 143 at the end of regulation. May birdied the fifth playoff hole to capture medalist honors. May also took home the Hubert Tucker Award for the lowest scoring average in the state for the year. He is CoLin’s first Hubert Tucker Award winner. May and teammate Alex Clark were named to the All-State First Team. After finding themselves in fourth place after the first round of the NJCAA Region 23, the Wolfpack would rally to finish runner-up behind champion Mississippi Gulf Coast. May took NJCAA Region XXIII medalist honors and was named to the NJCAA All-Region XXIII Team. He also qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament at Goosepond Country Club in Scottsboro, Ala. The Wolfpack also excelled in the classroom finishing as the NJCAA’s No. 18 Academic Team of the Year. Head coach Ronny Ross was named MACJC Coach of the Year, MAC Coach of the Year, and Eaton Golf Pride Central Region Coach of the Year. Graduating sophomores include Corbin May, Alex Clark, and Austin McFarland. The Wolves return two experienced sophomores from

the 2013 team in Connor Barnes and Austin Schillaci. Ross has signed incoming freshmen Gregory Causey of Petal High, Ryan Desormeaux of Broussard La., Will Lee of Loyd Star, and Kayd Rush of Natchez. Ross feels like his team will have enough talent to make another state title run in 2014. “With the experience my two sophomores have and the good rounds we got out of them last year and the addition of a talented group of freshman, I feel like we should be right back in the thick of things this season,” said Ross.

PERKINSTON - For the second straight week, the underdog Co-Lin Wolfpack came from behind as they upset the No. 6 ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs 41-37 to win the MACJC State Championship. It was the Wolfpack’s first state championship since 1985. “The first half we didn’t play very smart, we played hard, but we kind of played like we did in the whole ball game in Wesson,” said Co-Lin Head Coach Glenn Davis. “We told them at halftime that we weren’t playing very physical and we weren’t playing very smart and we’ve got 30 minutes to change what we weren’t doing. Kids came out and we made some plays offensively that got us going, the defense got going, it was a great second half.” The Wolfpack would take their first lead of the game with 7:52 left in the game. Quarterback Chandler Rogers would find a wide-open Marquis Hayes for his third touchdown of the game. This one, a 46-yard strike, put Co-Lin up 34-31 with 7:52 left in the game. “Coach called some good plays, Chandler got it to me and I was wide open,” said Hayes who had the biggest game of his Co-Lin career with touchdowns of 51, 71, and 46 yards. On the next Gulf Coast possession, Milton Griffin would pick off a Hatten pass to give Co-Lin the ball at the Gulf Coast 17-yard line. Rogers would hit Joe Craig Jr. on a 15-yard touchdown pass. Long’s PAT increased the Wolfpack lead to 41-31 with 5:54 remaining. But the Bulldogs weren’t going to go down without a fight. After Hatten was sacked by Terrell Hartsfield at the Gulf Coast 3-yard line, it looked like the Wolfpack had the game well in hand. On the very next play, Hatten would throw a 97-yard touchdown pass to Dhaquille Williams with 4:48 still on the clock. The Bulldogs would try an onside kick, but the Wolfpack would recover. The Gulf Coast defense would force hold Co-Lin on fourth down with less than a minute left in the game. After an incomplete pass, Hatten found Williams for a 51-yard pass down to the Co-Lin 30. On the next play, Greg Sims would intercept Hatten in the end zone to ice the win for the Wolfpack. “I really can’t believe it,” said quarterback Chandler Rogers. “I didn’t know how long it had been since Co-Lin had won the state and to come out here against Gulf Coast who embarrassed us at homecoming it was awesome to come down here and get a win. We haven’t lost on the road, we enjoy playing on the road, and it was nice to get some redemption.” Rogers completed 23-of-31 passes for 358 yards and 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. Gulf Coast scored first on an 11-yard run by Anton Thornton with 7:26 remaining in the first quarter. Stephen Brauchle’s PAT gave the Bulldogs an early 7-0 lead. Co-Lin would mount a 75-yard drive that took 6:23. Running back Van Lee ran in from 2 yards out. Nolan Long’s

PAT was partially blocked as the Wolfpack pulled to 7-6 with 1:03 left in the first quarter. Gulf Coast would score 17 points in the second quarter. A 7-yard run by Derrick Goff at the 12:03 mark put the Bulldogs up 14-6. After Fenest Armstrong intercepted a Rogers pass, the Bulldogs took advantage as Hatten hit Williams on a 23-yard strike to put Gulf Coast up 21-6. On the next Co-Lin possession, Rogers would find Hayes for a 51-yard touchdown. Long’s PAT would pull the Wolfpack to 21-13 with 6:30 left in the half. Gulf Coast would increase their lead to 24-13 on a 28yard Brauchle field goal with 1:43 remaining in the half. Co-Lin would strike first in the second half when Casey Gladney took a Zach Pinkerton punt 71-yards to pay dirt to pull the Wolfpack to with 24-20 at the 11:03 mark in the third quarter. Bulldog running back JoJo Snell would break free to score from 51-yards out to increase the Gulf Coast lead to 31-20 with 7:49 left in the third. On the first play of Co-Lin’s next possession, Rogers found Hayes again, this time a 71-yard bomb that took 9 seconds off the clock. Long’s PAT closed the Gulf Coast lead to 31-27. Hayes led the Wolfpack receivers with 8 catches for 231 yards. Craig had 8 catches for 72 yards. Co-Lin rushed for 94 yards. Van Lee led the way with 44 yards. Darius Guy added 42 yards before going out of the game in the second quarter with a foot injury. Hatten was 10-of-19 for 280 yards 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. Williams had 9 catches for 235 yards. Thornton led the Gulf Coast ground attack with 7 carries for 58 yards. Goff, who rushed for 145 yards in the first meeting, was held to 32 yards by the Co-Lin defense. On defense for the Wolfpack, Milton Griffin, Brian Isaac, and Greg Sims had interceptions. Jordan Harris had 11 tackles to lead the Wolfpack.
