CAAE WINTER INSTITUTE • FEBRUARY 19–21, 2018
Letter from the president Data is the new oil This adage is widely attributed to UK Mathematician Clive Humby, and since 2006, has been repeated by both CEO’s and data pundits in a variety of contexts. It stands to reason that our Winter Institute gathering this year should focus on this critical element of our work as builders of communities, and creators of affinity and loyalty. Loyalty is something that Clive Humby knew a lot about. In addition to being a mathematician, he was also the architect of a customer loyalty program for Tesco, a major UK grocery chain. He went on to say that data is “….valuable, but if unrefined it cannot really be used. It has to be changed into gas, plastic, chemicals, etc. to create a valuable entity that drives profitable activity; so must data be broken down, analyzed for it to have value.” Since Humby’s time, the world, and our perspective on data, privacy, and data ownership has changed dramatically as we have seen data ownership becoming increasingly concentrated and concerns about confidentiality and misuse of our personal information have grown. We have also, arguably become saturated with information, but our insight and knowledge have not always kept pace. What are the opportunities and the threats facing us as both custodians and stewards of our alumni data? How do we serve our institutions by taking advantage of the alumni data available to us while also respecting the rights our alumni? What will the data landscape look like in years ahead as trust in social media erodes? How will we fulfill the expectations of our alumni who increasingly anticipate a highly personalized “amazon” style experience informed by a deep knowledge of their preferences and past behavior? These are just some of the questions we will have a chance to explore as part this 2018 Winter Institute. This meeting is designed to feed your minds and renew your professional spirit, through formal sessions, interactive discussions and social time for collegial exchange and inquiry. On behalf of the Council of Alumni Association Executives Board of Directors, welcome to the 2018 Winter Institute! A special welcome to the representatives from institutions that have recently joined our organization. We hope that combining warm Arizona sun with enriching conversations and fellowship, the CAAE Winter Institute leaves you, the leaders of our field, with a sunny outlook on the past, present and future of Alumni Engagement. With best wishes,

Greg Wells, Ph.D Assistant Professor, Human Physiology Research Unit University of Toronto
As a scientist, broadcaster, author, coach and athlete, Dr. Greg Wells has dedicated his career to understanding human performance and how the human body responds to extreme conditions. Dr. Wells is an assistant professor of kinesiology at the University of Toronto where he studies elite sport performance. He also serves as an associate scientist of physiology and experimental medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children where he leads the Exercise Medicine Research Program. There, he and his team explore how to use exercise to prevent, diagnose and treat chronic illnesses in children. Previously, he served as the director of sport science at the Canadian Sport Institute, and taught elite sport coaches at the National Coaching Institute. Throughout his career, Dr. Wells has coached, trained and inspired dozens of elite athletes to win medals at World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. He has studied athletic performance in some of the most severe conditions on the planet, like the Andes Mountains and the Sahara Desert. Dr. Wells has had his own personal experience with the challenges and opportunities of adversity and human extremes. Late in his high school career, he broke his neck in a freak accident while swimming in the ocean and was in a halo brace before undergoing neurosurgery. Told by his doctor that he would never perform as an athlete again, he went on to compete at the international level in swimming. He has competed in events such as the Nanisivik Marathon - 600 miles north of the Arctic Circle - Ironman Canada, and the Tour D’Afrique, a grueling 11,000-kilometre event that is the longest bike race in the world. Dr. Wells is the author of Superbodies: Peak Performance Secrets from the World’s Best Athletes (HarperCollins, June 26, 2012), which explores how genetics and DNA, the brain, muscles, lungs, heart and blood work together in extreme conditions. His latest book is The Ripple Effect (HarperCollins, April 4, 2017) which is a fascinating look at the power of simple changes to transform your health and performance, drawing on Wells’ world-class scientific and athletic expertise. A sought after speaker on the topic of human performance, Dr. Wells has spoken at top events like TEDX and the Titan Summit, alongside Sir Richard Branson, Robin Sharma and Steve Wozniak. Dr. Wells is a frequent contributor to The Globe and Mail and has been an expert source to other top media outlets like ABC News, “20/20,” The Discovery Channel, TSN, CBC and CTV. He also served as the sports medicine analyst for the Canadian Olympic Broadcast Consortium for the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games.

I. Welcome President JT. Forbes brought the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. II. Approval of February 22, 2017 Minutes
CAAE Member Meeting minutes Summer Institute July 18, 2017 San Francisco, California
Minutes were distributed in advance. Forbes asked for approval of the minutes. Donna McPhee moved approval and Mike Pede seconded. The minutes were approved. III. President’s Report (Forbes) Forbes shared that the state of CAAE is strong. We made a significant progress in our relationships with partners, especially CASE. We have been much more integrated into the work of CASE through CAAE members serving in a variety of committees, boards, etc. There is cross-over membership with PCUAD. CASE has partnered with other organizations to consider issues such as public perception of higher educations. CAAE is also actively engaged with the CASE effort to identify alumni metrics. The board received an update on the CASE governance review process which is focused on evolving CASE to have a global governance structure and reflective of one CASE but with distributed regional volunteer structures to help inform and guide the work. Heavy emphasis is on freeing up volunteers from more operational tasks to focus on program development. Forbes thanked the membership for the opportunity to serve as chair. He especially acknowledge the work of Aija Moeller and Brett Chambers. IV. Treasurer’s Report (McCubbin) Todd McCubbin shared that revenue is at 101% of budget. Expenses are on track with summer meeting still to come in. 67% thus far. Next year’s budget is relatively flat as compared to last year. V. Membership Report (Wayland) Laura Wayland reported that we are sustaining at 84 members. Winter institute satisfaction was very high and so was the participation, however participation in summer meeting is at an all-time low. We will be doing a member survey to assess level of member
22
satisfaction and gauge where the board can focus its efforts going forward. We will be developing some messaging around members in good standing to encourage full participation in CAAE requirements for membership. VI. G overnance Report/Election of New Officers and Directors (Dick) Barbara Dick, reporting on behalf of the Governance Committee, acknowledged the service of Paula Bonner and Howard Wolf who will be stepping off the board. She thanked the membership for the nominations received for the board. Joe Irwin moved and Jorge Ancona seconded the motion to accept the slate (list below). The membership approved the slate. Barbara Dick, University of Toronto, endorsed by the Governance Committee for the first year of a one-year term as President until August 31, 2018. Hoopes Wampler, University of Pennsylvania, endorsed by the Governance Committee for the first year of a one-year term as Vice-President and President-elect until August 31, 2018. Montique Cotton Kelly, University of Connecticut, endorsed by the Governance Committee as an elected director to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Howard Wolf of Stanford University as per article VI, 6.2, F of the CAAE By Laws and Standing Rules with a term completion date of August 31, 2018.
