CAAE WINTER INSTITUTE • FEBRUARY 17–19, 2020
Letter from the president KEEPING IT
REAL
Greetings CAAE Friends! It is my great pleasure to welcome you to our 2020 CAAE Winter Institute. We are indeed fortunate to be able to come together, connect, and spend time with our colleagues and friends.
Our theme this year, ‘keeping it real,’ is reflective of the honest, transparent and ‘real’ conversations we are all able to have with one another and as community when we gather. We have committed to an intentional culture that provides a space for all of us to gather as peers to create partnerships and working relationships that transcend our two annual institutes – and better enable us to be effective in our roles as the leaders of the most significant alumni organizations in the world. For the 2020 Winter Institute, we will be ‘keeping it real’ by opening our time together with a conversation about how we can build or, in many cases, refresh our collective trust in higher education. What are our lessons learned and strategies moving forward in a time that has challenged our constituents’ level of trust and faith in higher education? For the rest of the program, we have listened to your feedback about what is important to you and what you value about our time together. As a result, we have reimagined several aspects of the Winter Institute and we will be eager to hear what you think. For example: • We will not ‘program’ our reception and meal time together. A colleague from the Institutes Committee or our board will offer brief remarks at the start of our meals – and then encourage us to keep our conversations going. I anticipate that we will succeed! • We have tried to provide time for informal networking and left a few blocks of time open for just that – including a new and additional activity time where we can move and sweat together. • We have identified a time for roundtable conversation with topics to be determined by our real-time conversations, both formal and informal, leading up to that session. • We asked for your feedback and ideas for session content and hope we have been good listeners – the topics we cover have been crafted specifically with you in mind. • We will once again celebrate the future of our profession through our fellows. • We have moved their session to earlier in the institute with hopes that will help shape and frame your dialogue with these rising stars throughout our time together. My deepest thanks go to Julie Sina and Duane Wiles (and Committee) for their dedication and creative energy in putting together this year’s Winter Institute. The team’s vision will come to reality over the next few days, and I personally can’t wait to watch it all come to glorious fruition. Finally, 2020 will be our last Winter Institute in Scottsdale – at least for a little while. Next year we move to the Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa. Please take a moment to remember all the good times we have had here and get ready for an exciting new start in San Diego in 2021! Cheers to you and a toast to three great days together! Hoopes

Public Trust in Higher Education; Part I
8:45 a.m. – 9:45 a.m.
Recent Pew Center and Gallup research underscore the existential threat of declining public trust in higher education as political divisiveness continues to impact our colleges and universities. Senior advocacy and policy leaders from CASE and AGB will examine and explore these alarming trends and share their perspectives on nationwide issues, challenges contributing to this persistent decline, and how CASE and AGB plan to work with institutions and alumni executives to reverse this trend. This keynote will be followed on Tuesday morning with panel conversation on this topic with three CAAE member leaders. Introduction: Paul Rucker, University of Washington

The First American Philanthropists: Native American Alumni Experiences with University Advancement Using a case-study analysis, I explore the experiences of Native American alumni with university advancement. Data come from a document analysis, in-depth interviews and a focus group with leaders of a Native American alumni organization at a public research university in California. Findings reveal that Native American alumni, informed by their cultural values and experiences with generous individuals in their pathways to college, give back to their alma maters in various forms. A lack of trust in the university’s awareness, ability and accountability in supporting Native American students creates a sense duty for Native American alumni give back to their alma mater. I draw implications from my findings, discussing the importance of reciprocity in relationships when working with Native American alumni. My discussion also highlight the need to be relevant, respectful, and responsible when stewarding all forms of alumni Native American alumni gifts, in all forms, to the university. Online Alumni Engagement: How to Inspire, Track, and Measure Deepening Levels of Alumni Engagement As institutions seek to engage alumni where they are—mostly online—many are devoting increasing time and resources to expand their portfolio of online alumni engagement programs. Online engagement often offers a strong ROI and allows institutions to greatly expand their geographic footprint, but there are still questions to be answered regarding the impact of online programming and its efficacy in driving alumni to increase their engagement and philanthropy. By speaking with alumni leaders at nearly a dozen universities about their work to engage alumni online, my research explores the current successes and future challenges of online alumni engagement. CAAE Metrics: Census and Salary Data
Since its inception in 1989, CAAE has collected benchmarking data from its membership to provide a basis for empirical, evidence-based assessment. As our prescient founders saw, data is playing an even larger role in alumni engagement and institutional advancement overall. After a brief update on the CASE Alumni Engagement Metrics initiative, CAAE members will help identify refinements to the CAAE Annual Census and Salary Survey. J T. Forbes and Mark Sollis will facilitate discussion on proposed changes to the Census and Survey and gather member feedback on measurement collecting, reporting, and expectations, as well as the ideal state, intended audiences, and most common uses of the data. How Data Science Could Likely Save Higher Education, Alumni Relations and Humanity. For all intents and purposes, the cure from cancer, world peace, or the eradication of human “isms” will likely come from the educated-graduate minds of the world’s colleges and universities. If only higher education could know alumni like megacommercial and nonprofit brands understand their customers, we would undoubtedly take alumni engagement to new levels. Unlike the mega-brands of modern culture, most colleges and universities are flying by the seat-of-their-pants in terms of data analytics, data science, and associated

So What’s Your Favorite Color? Successful alumni relations professionals will ask the all-important question: “what data should we collect to understand our graduates better?” Would it help to know one’s political affiliation, or if they shop at Trader Joe’s versus Aldi? Absolutely! Better yet, where would it take us if we knew if a graduate owned a shih tzu versus a rottweiler! In brief, data provides insight on a whole range of issues from programming and business development opportunities to engagement strategies and fundraising. In this timely session, we will speak with three CAAE colleagues who are advocates for elevating the science of alumni relations. During this session we discuss the value and impact of asking the right questions of alumni and getting them to tell us what they need and want from life. By paying attention to data points, we can start to better segment the alumni base on what they truly value and help our institutions stay relevant in the lives of our alumni.
