Where Students Never Graduate
Completing a three-to-four-year university degree will no longer mark the end of studying, as training and upgrading of skills become more important in a rapidly evolving economy. National University in Singapore has pledged to play a greater role in supporting the ongoing education of alumni by drawing up plans for each students’ career and learning path, for up to 20 years from the time he or she is admitted. Boston University has recognized the potential to both extend and add value to the connection the university has with its alumni through lifelong education and career advice. Through its “Creating a Next Education” Commission, Georgia Tech expressed a commitment to providing alumni with programs, products and services that are relevant throughout their lifetimes. Explore this disruptive view of the role of university education extending beyond the conventional undergraduate or graduate degree framework.

The Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association has been considering two questions: What is the most meaningful way to engage recent graduates that leverages their high affinity and builds a sense of alumni community? What is the most effective approach to solicit recent graduates for annual giving—if there is one?
MONDAY, JULY 15, 2019 continued Their pursuit of the answers has led them on a path with much broader implications and an emerging alumni lifecycle model to apply across their advancement enterprise. Using cluster analysis within the alumni affinity survey and the alumni/donor database, they found six unique age segments based on alumni behavior. Applying life-stage development theory to these data findings suggest new and differentiated approaches to engagement and giving across the alumni lifecycle. Find out how they are using data to prioritize engagement activity and inform solicitation strategies for recent grads and all age segments.

Call to order and welcome (Barbara Dick)
CAAE president Barbara Dick called the CAAE Business Meeting to order at 8:43 a.m. Ms. Dick thanked all the attendees for making the commitment to attend and participate in the CAAE Winter Institute. She also thanked Chad Warren and Laura Wayland for being so forthcoming in their remarks during the February 19 sessions, stating she believes they characterized the openness and sense of community of CAAE. Ms. Dick also thanked Susan deMuth and Julie Sina for their leadership in putting together the Winter Institute. Lastly, she recognized CAAE Board members and thanked them for their time, expertise and for generously giving to the alumni relations profession.
Approval of July 17, 2018 minutes
Minutes from the July 17, 2018 CAAE Business Meeting were provided to all attendees. Upon motion duly made by Melinda Burke and seconded by Richard Engel, the minutes of the July 17, 2018 CAAE Business Meeting were unanimously approved as presented.
III. President’s Report (Barbara Dick) Accounting Review
Jorge Ancona provided an overview of the independent accounting review from Brooks McGinnis and Company. The Audit committee met to discuss results for the year ending August 31, 2018. Brooks McGinnis and Company issued a clean opinion of the review, stating the financial activities are being handled in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This review was also previously presented to the CAAE Board, who voted to accept the report.
Governance
Bylaws revisions were distributed and will also be sent to all CAAE members not in attendance. Any questions or comments should be directed to Hoopes Wampler. Based upon feedback received, a phone meeting might be convened. Ideally, we would like to vote to ratify the updated bylaws this summer. A question was raised by Mike Pede regarding who designates the participant from each institution, and why there are two members attending from University of Virginia. Ms. Dick addressed the question stating there is room for interpretation in the current bylaws. University of Virginia requested both members, and the Board reconsidered the request and agreed to allow both members. Going forward, the goal is to provide clarity in the revised bylaws, while also allowing Board discretion to make decisions in these types of rare situations.

Membership Meeting
Agenda: Summer 2019
Membership Meeting Paul Clifford had a question about the new mission statement and strategic framework. Ms. Dick said the new mission is taken from the previously approved strategic framework. There have been many discussions in the governance committee on these proposed changes. J T. Forbes clarified that the committee has released the proposed bylaws for comments from members and these will be voted on in July. He said we are not asking for approval today but want people to review and provide comments prior to the July Summer Institute meeting. Mr. Forbes reiterated that nothing is a forgone conclusion, rather, the committee is waiting to hear feedback. In response to a question from Steve Hall on the approval process, Ms. Dick said that 2/3 of members need to approve; however, that might be an issue in July since we don’t have 2/3 of members in attendance. Mr. Hall is concerned about an independent review of bylaws instead of having a broad conversation among members. He encouraged the Board to have a forum to allow members to interact and discuss the proposed changes.

Ms. Dick asked for volunteers to serve on the CAAE Board or on a committee. She stated that CAAE is by members, for members, so please get involved There will be a new location for the Winter Institute starting in 2021. Mary-Kathleen Todd provided an update and mentioned we will remain in Scottsdale in 2020 (Feb 17–19), but in 2021 (Feb 10–12) and 2022 (Feb 9–11), the CAAE Winter Institute will be held at Estancia La Jolla Hotel in La Jolla, California.
CASE Update
CASE has pulled together information on participation of CAAE members in CASE initiatives—committees, faculty, and conference presenters. Over the past three years, 32 of the 85 CAAE members had at least one CASE leadership engagement, and 15 had two engagement activities and nine had three different engagements. CAAE continues to look at additional ways to expand the thought leadership that CAAE members bring to the alumni relations profession.

Financial Report (Jeff Davis)
CAAE financial statements were distributed and reviewed by CAAE treasurer Jeff Davis. He stated the balance sheet has a balance of $250K, the positive balance due to increased sponsorships. This provides an opportunity to look at funding initiatives, such as increasing the Summer Institute subsidy or research projects. The income statement is strong, and CAAE is in good financial position this year. We are at 109% of revenue for the year. Upon motion duly made by Lee Patouillet and seconded by Todd McCubbin, the January 31, 2019 financial statements were approved as presented.
V.
Communication Report (Gabrielle Korn)
Ms. Korn reported the Communication committee is looking to increase overall communication, including utilizing some of the CAAE budget to hire a freelance communication specialist to help develop content and improve communication. Ms. Korn provided some background on Molly Ritvo, the person hired to fill the freelance role. She also thanked all the volunteer note takers and mentioned that some of the speakers’ content will be used for future newsletters. Further, Ms. Korn stated that CAAE has a LinkedIn group, and since this is a private group, she will send an invitation to members to connect via LinkedIn. This will provide another way to expand visibility and awareness of what we are doing as a profession, and the LinkedIn platform might also be a good place to note expertise of our members. Lastly, Ms. Korn said the CAAE website needs upgrading, including optimizing the site for mobile devices. The committee is looking at options on evolving the website.
VI. Membership Report (Laura Wayland)
Ms. Wayland reports CAAE has 84 current members, with one more new member anticipated. CAAE has lost five universities due to budget issues or leadership transition: University of California Santa Barbara, University of Miami, Ball State, University of Notre Dame and University of Pittsburgh. New universities that have joined CAAE are University of Northern Illinois, University of Buffalo, University of Virginia and University College London. Ms. Wayland stated that in the future when a transition takes place at a CAAE member university, the interim will stay in the CAAE role and when a permanent person is named to the leadership position, they will need to provide an updated profile information to ensure the institution is still eligible for CAAE membership. Lastly, Ms. Wayland stated that member satisfaction questions will be included as part of the Winter Institute survey.
