today. Without further adieu, Bill O'Hanlon, thank you for joining me. Thank you, Doug. Since you said Coachzing, I've always loved your name. I have a claim that I would love if someone would prove me wrong. I believe I was the first therapist to use the metaphor of coaching in therapy, and that was in 1987, probably before you were born, and it was my first book, Shifting Context, and I

had, with my co-author, we decided a better metaphor for therapy is coaching.

You're not going out and doing what the people are doing in life. You're like the coach that's telling them what to do on the playing field, and we put that in one of our chapters and then coaching became big after that. So I'm coaching from way back, way back in the 80s.
! Doug:
I agree. First of all, I wasn't born in the 80s, I was born in the 70s. I'm not that young. But I tell people that, possibility therapy and you're a co-founder of solution-oriented therapy, correct?
! Bill:
Yes.
Doug:
And so that really is the foundation of all coaching.
Bill:
Well, I have read books about coaching and they say, well this is different from

therapy because you don't diagnose and you look for peoples' strengths and you move them to action. And I'm like, wait a minute, that's the therapy I made up in the 90s. That sounds exactly like therapy to me. But it doesn't sound like traditional therapy, so I get it. You're right, you're right.

So let's get into it. One of the things we're saying is you have been able to be very successful online and also offline. We're talking about content strategies, and so I wanted to ask you what your favorite content strategy is, or if you have several content strategies that you want to share, that have been successful for you in

Well, as you said at the very beginning, the reason I started writing books and speaking is that I wanted to have a bigger impact than I could have just in my office on one-on-one, which is part of the impulse of going online, doing podcasts and

putting out content in the world. And so I started studying internet stuff a while ago, but as a coach, as a therapist,

we don't get much training in marketing or creating content, this kind of stuff. I came across a little audio program. It was about making reports, I think it was reports -- no, tip sheets. I think Jeanette Gauge, if I remember, but you probably

know her. And so I made my own first tip sheet, and it was 30 ways that therapists could expand their work outside their office, because that's my background as a therapist. And so they said charge a lot of money, charge more than you would for a book, and it was $24.95.

I put it on sale. I had a mailing list, I had started to build a mailing list of people who got my slides after I spoke, so that's how I first started to get people on a

mailing list.
