The Prez’s Corner ........ by Andy Winterbottom, President

A.) Helping out with Hospitality and Registration, B.) Helping with set up and take down at events C.) Help out with parking and "security" (Do NOT bring your own heat), D.) Help with escorting drivers; think about Porsche 356s that are 60 years and more old, because the 356s which usually "pack" less than 100 horse power and do not accelerate (or stop) within contemporary standards, E.) Helping with planning F.) And there may be more but we don't know what that is to be yet. We have 716 people in our California Central Coast Region, so we certainly can muster enough help for this upcoming 356 event. If you can help us, please forward your contact information to Joe Kuntz: k708388@aol.com Other news: Your board approved a modest donation to the NOORS Foundation which we hope will help out with medical affairs for those that can benefit from assistance. Another topic for "help wanted": If you know of anyone living in our Region who drives/owns a Porsche but has not joined the Porsche Club of America (the CCCR Region), persuade them that for a low nominal annual fee they can join up. Sanja Brewer is our Membership Director (and Historian) and can be contacted at: sbrewer@eyesonly.com for any assistance that may be necessary or any of our board members are happy to assist as well. Our Gil Igleheart is keeping us entertained with social activities (we had 41 people at the Cambria event) with more to come. Two activities are the "really big shows" for us: The New Members Bar-B-Q which we subsidize and our Holiday Party in December that Sanja organizes which we partially subsidize to "make it more

Don’t pass up this opportunity especially with a 50% discount! Have a great month!, Andy

KIT’S KAR-TUNE

Summer for all intents and purposes is here. What is new is our California Central Coast Region (CCCR) is helping out to support the "356 Registry" coming to our region in September. This event draws Porsche 356 owners from all over of the continental U.S. Our own board member, Joe Kuntze, is the chief coordinator, cook and bottle washer for this event. Joe tells me that we are the "smallest" Porsche Club of America Region to host this event and we are looking for volunteers to help out with various "duties" which include but are not limited to:

Get Out & Drive ........ by Bob Kitamura, Editor Sorry this issue is a little late. I know that I will receive no sympathy from most of you because I was on Maui for a month for both business and pleasure. I ran into only a couple of 911’s while I was there. Which I understand have been rarely seen during Covid. However, there are a lot of Cayennes and Macans, I even tried to rent one!

Well, we are officially halfway through 2022! I don’t know about you but it seems like I haven’t had a chance to get too far into my yearly “to do” list. Related to my Porsche, I was going to bring it back up to Concours “Street Class” level this year then enter some of the Zone 8 Concours again in 2023. I had done it for many years

with my Boxster and even placed a few times. We will see how the rest of this year goes. Included in this issue is an article by Manny Alban related to the PCA concours events. We have some great fall and summer events coming up so make sure you take a look at our events page. It was announced that the world renown Porsche event of events, the Porsche Rennsport Reunion, is happening again next year, 2023. It will be held at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, from September 28 to October 1 in 2023. This will be the seventh running of the Rennsport Reunion and marks the fourth time that the iconic California race circuit is the stage for a celebration of the motorsports heart of Porsche. Further information on themes and ticket sales will be announced soon. During the four-day event, fans of all ages will not only get to experience exciting racing action with vintage and contemporary Porsche race cars on track, but also be able to see many rare Porsche vehicles, enjoy new vehicle reveals, Esports, fan zones, and take part in opportunities to meet and interact with drivers as they share their exciting racing experiences. If you’re a Porsche fanatic, like me then you don’t want to miss this event. Finally, for those of you that missed it, here is our contribution to the May PCA Panorama in the From the Regions section on page 90.

I hope all of you have a great summer and you will hear from me next in July, hopefully on time! Which reminds me I have to start on that issue now! No rest for the weary! Now, Get Out and Drive!........... Bob “Kit”, Coastalaire Editor

Autocross Academy / Teststrecke 52 story by Chuck Jennings

THE ACADEMY Our autocross school is one of my favorite CCCR events. Since we started seven years ago, we have conducted a school every other year. It’s a great opportunity to not only introduce folks to the fun of autocross, but it also encourages more enthusiasm and appreciation for the marvels of the Porsche marque. You’ll often hear, “Wow! I didn’t know my car could do that!” And the development of driving skills learned with the maturity of autocross experience will make anyone a better, safer driver. On May 7, we had twenty-eight eager newbies, including eight ladies, show up for the classroom session that started at 8:00 a.m. at the Santa Maria Airport Administration Building. The morning session covered topics that included an overview of autocross as a driving improvement experience. We also covered basic performance issues such as the technology of tires, tire pressure, tire wear and maintenance, alignment, and suspension. During the last half of the morning session, we focused on understanding the most efficient driving strategies that included the most efficient “line” around the course, timing of braking and acceleration, and recognizing and understanding oversteering and understeering. If you are interested in reviewing the PowerPoint lesson for more specific

information, go to https://ccc. pca.org/ and click on Classroom PowerPoint under Autocross School 2022 Documents Links. At 9:45 a.m., the students were paired with their instructors, and then we all caravanned to the set up practice autocross course on the opposite side of the airport. Each instructor had two students. Upon arriving at the autocross venue, students and instructors parked together in the pit area, and the instructors demonstrated a technical and safety inspection of each student’s car. That was immediately followed by each instructor’s leading his or her students on a walk around the course. This is standard practice for all autocross drivers regardless of experience. During the “walk the track”, the students and instructors discussed the “rhythm” of the course, what visual clues to use to anticipate turns and directions, where to brake and accelerate, and the best “line”, that is, the most efficient position entering each corner and where to turn into each corner. During the drivers meeting, we reviewed how we would drive the course for the remainder of the morning session. The students were divided into two groups, while one group drove

the course, the other group “worked the course” at assigned stations where they replaced misplaced traffic cones and/or alerted drivers on the course of any possible stalled cars ahead. The morning course was a close variation of the actual autocross course to be driven that afternoon and the following day. But the students drove the morning practice course in divided segments with specifically different challenges designed to give them appropriate experience and to develop skills and awareness in controlling their cars guided by the instructors with them in their cars without the pressure of competition or of pushing for faster times. Laps were not timed. Mistakes at slow speeds were expected and the experience was designed to be safe. The driving challenges started with two “skid pads” in opposite directions in which the students drove continuously around a center point learning to feel the action of their car’s performance, whether it tended to oversteer or understeer in a tight turn. From there, they drove slowly to the beginning of the practice slalom course, a straightaway with a series of alternating lefthand and righthand gates. Slalom runs are very common

The Coastalaire

June 2022

17

Autocross Academy / Teststrecke 52 to almost all autocross events, but with varying distances and rhythms. Efficient performance on a slalom course is a very important skill, especially as it may occur in an emergency situation at highway speeds. After completing the slalom course, students were asked to accelerate as fast as they and their car were able in a straight line toward the finish line. At the finish line, they were to come to a dead stop in the shortest distance as their car was able without locking the tires. They had more than enough distance to stop safely, but for most of the students, this was the first time they had experienced the full braking performance of their cars, and the first tries were expectedly timid. As the morning went on, most of the students learned the real meaning of “aggressive braking”; again, a very valuable, even lifesaving skill on the open road. Each student completed five or more drives through the entire practice course. After a brief lunch break, the practice course was modified into a continuous autocross course, and for the remainder of the afternoon, students with their instructors drove the course “at speed” trying to improve their skills and develop their confidence. By 2:30 p.m. we were ready

The Coastalaire

to complete the day. There were no incidences of loss of control, unless you want to count the uncontrollable grins, chuckles, gesturing and head nods. The ladies offered quite a bit of positive feedback and seemed to have the most fun. Some wives were joyously determined to outperform their husbands. For sure, Porsche owners went home with a much better appreciation of the capabilities of their car, including one Macan. It was truly a fun day, and I look forward with great anticipation to our next autocross school. Much thanks to all the instructors and volunteers that made this event such a success. Not in any particular order: Warren White, Amy Smith, Pat Kelley, Phil Citek, Larry Butler, Jon Milledge, Jeff Bartlet, Bruce Morgenthaler, Andy Winterbottom, Geoff Straw, Sam Gardali, Ian Anderson, Bob Bruington, Tom Dobyns, Bill Deviny, Sonny Brown, Alfred Abken, and Fred Herr. “It’s not about the cars. It’s about the people.”

North Meets South 2022 story by Gary Thies

photos by Gary Thies & Bob Kitamura

Every year, the 356 Porsche clubs from “356 Car” (North) and “356 Club” (South), alternate hosting the event either in San Luis Obispo, or Cambria. This year was The North’s turn, and “Hawaii” was the theme! Lots of Pooka necklaces, flowered headbands and of course outside shirts. Thursday was registration and greeting party at the host hotel, Embassy Suites. Farmers Market was a popular venue; but everyone was on their own.. Friday, was the swap meet and “drive day”; the main one was to Montana de Oro State Park, others were ”on their own” destinations, mostly to the multitude of wineries we have. Friday night was a free Pizza and the trimmings venue at the Hotel, and lotsa drinks. I spent most of Friday helping folks fix various issues with their cars! My friend Dave’s car, leaked transmission fluid all over my garage floor, fortunately I had the parts he needed. Another fellows starter failed, so Ray Crosno sold him one of his spare starters to get him going..We were all here to help! Over 275 entries, including about 125 356 coupes, roadsters, cabriolets, and speedsters were on display on Saturday at

Laguna Lake Park.. One of my favorites, since I am restoring a 56’ coupe, was Chuck House’s all original silver 1956 Porsche Carrera coupe. He had won a second in class at Pebble Beach Concour last year! Saturday night was the Peoples Choice awards banquet, our table collected 3 trophies, and one table prize! Sunday was breakfast, and most headed home to where ever and most will be back for the West Coast Holiday in September, hosted by our local 356 enthusiasts headed by none other than Joe Kuntze. California Central Coast Region Drivers Education story by Bob Bruington

Photos by Vanhap Photography

O

ur annual Drivers Education event at Buttonwillow Raceway on May 13th was very successful and way too much fun. Our sister Porsche Club to the North, Golden Gate Region, joined us on Friday, then ran a two-day DE and Club Race Saturday and Sunday. Friday was a balmy 80 perfect degrees. Saturday and Sunday were a little warmer but very tolerable. A few of our drivers who arrived Thursday night, had a few beverages then barbecued at the track to start the weekend. Some of us camped at the track that night, got an early start prepping the cars, setting up grid and registration. GGR had a few drivers spend the night at the track too. We got together swapped a few stories, a great way to start the event. I have written before about how the Drivers Education events are more than driving your car at high speeds, it is also a fantastic

Event at Buttonwillow Raceway Wrap Up social event. We have anywhere from eighty minutes to one hundred minutes of track time available, running twenty to twenty-five minutes sessions throughout the day. The balance of the time is working on your car or hanging out with the rest of the drivers. After 13 years of track days, I have gotten to be friends with many other drivers from all over the state and beyond. We had eight student drivers but had enough instructors for seventeen! We are always looking to introduce people to the Drivers Education events. If you would like to experience driving on a racetrack, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns the instructors that helped out for the day! It can be a little concerning getting into a high-powered car with someone who never has driven on a racetrack, but the satisfaction of taking a new driver to driving levels he or she could never had experienced except at the track, makes it all worthwhile. Our next Drivers Education event will be at Laguna Seca in beautiful Monterey, September 26th. Registration is open on Motorsportreg.com, search CCCR Laguna Seca. We should have instructors available for those of you who want to try the DE for the first time or want more instruction to hone your driving skills. We also you may have. Driving on the track is extremely safe compared to racing around the back roads of our county. Perfect road conditions, no slow traffic, no animals, no tractors and we all drive in the same direction! The first time on the track is a little intimidating, but with the fantastic instructors we have available, you will be in the swing of things very quickly. Typically, by the afternoon sessions, you are relaxed and having a great time. These Driver Education Events are maned by many people. Bill Deviny, Joe Shubitowski, Don Nelson, John Beccera, Alfred Abken, and Bill Chadwick are always there to help out with many hours put in at registration, gate entrance, grid, black flag and anywhere else we need them. We could not have a successful event without their help. If you would like to see what a track day is all about, volunteer for to help for the day. Guaranteed you will be happy you did. Thanks to all of

Drive and Dine to San Simeon Beach Bar & Grill story by Bill Gibson

Photos by TB-1 The day started like any other beautiful day on the Central Coast. We first gathered in front of Mercedes of San Luis Obispo. About 30 cars made it to the gathering. Right at 9:30 the group headed to LOVR then upon reaching Hwy 1, they began the rapid and exhilarating charge to San Simeon Beach Bar & Grill. Joe Shubitowski took the rear to keep an eye on any possible stragglers. Dry Creek, then to Vine Street to Vineyard Drive, then up Peachy Canyon allowing the Porsches to do what they do best. From Vine Street we turned west on Hwy 46 straight ahead to Hwy 1 ending at San Simeon Beach Bar & Grill. Upon arrival, everyone was seated outside on a lovely patio where we could look at multiple Porsches backdropped by the Pacific Ocean. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food and the conversations that ensued. All drivers made the journey intact and good spirits. One participant, a young lady with her brand new Boxster, driving it for the (almost) first time, had the time of her life. A guy who was from Zone 8 had seen the drive advertised and joined the group. He told Joe that it was the best time he ever had with a Porsche group and transferred into our region.

Zone 8 Concours Series Resumes Story & Photos by Alfred Abken

A

fter a 2-year hiatus, the Zone 8 Concours Series resumed Saturday, May 7. California Inland Region hosted the event. In years past, they have held their event at College of the Canyons, in Santa Clarita. It was a nice location, although rather limited in space. This year, however, the decision was made to hold the event at Porsche Santa Clarita. At first, this sounded like it could be rather chaotic, with the concours being held in conjunction with a Cars and Coffee event. As it turned out, it was well

There were 20 cars entered to be judged, and quite a few on display. I had my car entered for display only. Upon my arrival, while waiting for the judges meeting, I did a quick walk through of the museum that Porsche Santa Clarita has. They have a re-creation of 356-001, as well as both street cars and competition cars. They also have a 918 Spyder on display. Also on display in the museum is a 1984 956.

organized. Porsche Santa Clara offered breakfast and lunch for the PCA attendees. And, as it turned out, the concours being held indoors was a blessing as it was quite warm that day. I was glad to be out of the sun. This was my first time to visit Porsche Santa Clarita. I had seen photos that were posted on Facebook when they had their grand opening. I must say, I was impressed. I cannot guess as to their square footage, but the showroom is of a comfortable size. Impressively, they have a remarkable museum downstairs. If you ever find yourself in Southern California near Magic Mountain, and you have some time to kill, it is worth the trip to stop by and check the place out. They are at 23645 Creekside Rd. in Santa Clarita.

While looking at it, a shadow came across my view. When I looked up, I noticed there was a glass ceiling, and someone was walking over it. It turns out, upstairs in the showroom, there is a glass floor, and from the showroom you can look down into the museum and see the top of the 956. A very surprising touch, indeed. The next Zone 8 Concours is being hosted by GPX Region on Sunday, May 22, followed by OCR’s concours on Saturday, June 11. Future confirmed date is Sunday, October 9 for Santa Barbara Region’s concours.

If You Haven’t Heard Group14 Technologies Raises $400 Million From Porsche-Led Investor Group Greg Gardner Senior Contributor May 4, 2022, 06:00am EDT Group14 Technologies, a developer of materials that enhance the output of lithium-silicon batteries, has raised $400 million from a group led by Porsche AG, OMERS Capital Markets, Decarbonization Partners and other investors. The money will enable Group14 to begin constructing its second plant in the U.S. Materials supplied by the Woodinville, Washington-based company help boost lithium-silicon batteries by 50% from traditional lithium-ion batteries, which result in greater range between recharging of vehicles that use them. More automakers are turning to lithium-silicon because it is compatible with existing manufacturing processes.

The Coastalaire

Porsche has been delivering unique and sustainable sports cars for more than 70 years. In March, the German company, which is owned by Volkswagen AG, said it expects electric vehicles to account for 80% of its global sales by 2030. Porsche also plans to build its own charging network. Porsche currently has only one EV in its lineup, the Taycan. “Our investment in Group14 is an important step for Porsche,” said Lutz Meschke, deputy chairman of Porsche AG and member of the executive board. In a released

June 2022

statement, “We have been actively investing in ambitious companies since 2016 and through our venture capital unit.” Over the last year, Group14 has launched a battery active materials factory in Woodinville, Wash., about 20 miles northeast of Seattle. It also broke ground with SK Group on a joint venture factory in South Korea. “Group14 is well-positioned to elevate all batteries by enabling the transformational performance of silicon in today’s lithium-ion and tomorrow’s solid-state applica-

32

tions,” said Rick Luebbe, Group14 co-founder and CEO. One of its customers is Cellforce Group, a Porsche subsidiary, that plans to produce lithium-silicon battery cells in Germany beginning in 2024 to help power Porsche’s planned electric vehicles. In November 2021, Group14 announced a partnership with StoreDot, a provider of extreme fast charging battery technology for electric cars. StoreDot’s investors include BP, Daimler AG, TDK and Samsung. It has designed a battery cell based on a silicon-dominant anode that enables faster charging. Porsche’s partnership with Group14 comes days after the Biden administration announced it will allocate more than $3 billion to assist electric vehicle battery manufacturing in the U.S. The funding will come from the Department of Energy and is part of the $1 trillion infrastructure bill President Biden signed in 2021. Among the goals is to increase processing of minerals used in EV batteries and to make it easier to recycle those batteries. Biden wants half of all new vehicles sold in the U.S. to be battery-powered by 2030.

Tech - Concours Prep story and photos by Manny Alban

How preparing a car for concours can help extend the life of your Porsche | PCA Tech Tips

Above: A concours entrant cleans his Porsche's wheels.

posted by Manny Alban #PCATechTips Tuesday September, 07, 2021 Photos by Manny Alban One of the most misunderstood events in the Porsche world is Concours. Images of q-tips, judges in white lab coats, and the fear of being told your car is not concours worthy has discouraged many entrants from participating. But here’s the reality: A concours is not just for trailer queens and those who value trophies. It’s also a welcoming place where competitors will not only give free advice but readily offer their own cleaning supplies and point out a speck of dirt before the judges find it.

The Coastalaire

A Concours d’ Elegance is essentially a car show where judges are given a set amount of time to inspect your vehicle for cleanliness and presentation. At the Porsche Parade, there are also classes that will judge the authenticity of your Porsche as well as the cleanliness. There’s a class for every type of car, whether it’s modified or stock. Judging authenticity at a Region level doesn’t happen very often since it’s difficult to find a group of judges experienced to do that. That is why most of the concours you’ll participate in are based on cleanliness. Here are some tips that will hopefully convince you to give it a try.

Above: Judges inspect an early 911. Ask for a copy of the score sheets. Once you know what areas they will be judging you can decide which areas to work on and, more importantly, how much of your available time is spent on each area. After your car is judged, ask for the score sheets back. The judges should write down why they deducted points. You can use this constructive criticism to improve your car as you enter each concours. Schedule time to clean. If this is the first time you’re entering a concours, start preparing your car as early as you can and lay out a plan. Don’t focus all your time on one area that you see a blemish. Each car in a concours is usually scored by a judge who examines several areas of a vehicle. Spending 75% of your time on

an area that is just 5% on your total score does not make sense. Work on the car in sections. Once you’ve done the deep clean for your first concours, you should find subsequent concours a bit easier to prepare for. I like to focus on one area after I’ve washed the car. This weekend it may be the area around the intake manifold and fuel injectors and next weekend it may be the hinges on the doors. It doesn’t take a lot of time, but over a season it adds up to a clean and competitive car.

by just looking at a car a few feet away. I’ve discovered leaks, worn bushings, cracked wheels, and other things I wouldn’t have noticed until they became more apparent. Plus, most shops will sigh a breath of relief if they pop open your decklid or hood and find a clean engine.

Be prepared with your car’s story. Some events place a certain amount of importance on your ownership history of the car. Your Porsche doesn’t have to be a class winner at Le Mans. Being an owner who uses their Porsche for different purposes can impress judges. You’re doing this to make your Porsche better. Don’t be embarrassed by strangers judging your vehicle. Look at it as getting a free examination on what you have to clean for future events. Serious competitors will ask friends who are judges to come over and pre-judge their car so a second and third set of eyes can examine the vehicle before it rolls onto the concours field. So, how does preparing your car for a concours help extend its life? Well, unlike detailing, concours prep demands you get into nooks and crannies that you simply won’t notice

Autocross - Chuck Jennings wants to order more helmets, the Snell-approved racing helmets. Chuck wants to buy 9 of the these at an estimated cost of $1,614 in various sizes. Joe moved to accept this and Andy seconded. Safety Director - Bill Gibson is to be at all AX events or a designated person during set ups on Saturday mornings. Newsletter Editor - Bob Kitamura stated we’ve been in 6 Panoramas consecutively. It was decided that we should have our board meeting highlights on our website. Webmaster - Joe Shubitowski discussed the use of a 3rd party email server to be used instead of or in conjunctions with the PCA National Emailer. Both Grand Prix and Los Angeles Regions use MailChimp (by Intuit) to manage/ send emails. Benefits include having custom email lists which include non-PCA and/or non-Region names. The shortcoming is that it must be continually synchronized with the PCA National database which can change on a daily basis! It was decided to keep using the PCA Emailer and not venture into 3rd party systems at this time. Activities Assistant / 356 Advocate - Joe Kuntze - was not present but sent word all’s well.
