The Prez’s Corner .......

The wildflower super bloom has come and gone, and hopefully you were able to experience it on our CCCR drive or individually. It was quite spectacular! Local social and track events, PCA National events, and even global events are really starting to ramp up. Porsche Parade registration will be complete by the time you read this and as of last count we have almost forty CCCR members participating! Time to get that Porsche to The Stable or Porsche San Luis Obispo to make sure it is in tiptop shape for all the driving miles and the heat of the Palm Springs.

On Saturday June 10, 2023, Porsche AG, Porsche Cars North America, and PCA will be celebrating Porsche’s 75th Anniversary with a major event hosted by and held at Porsche San Luis Obispo. Details for registration and attendance will be released soon. You have already received my email asking for specific color Porsches to be displayed. Our local June 10th celebration promises to be a fantastic day!

Autocross and Drivers Education events are in full swing. The April AX and AX School marked the debut of our newly re-

surfaced track at Santa Maria Airport. The new surface held up extremely well, and we received many positive comments about the grip level and overall drivability. The next AX is Saturday May 13th, and subsequent Autocrosses will occur every four to six weeks until late October. The first DE of 2023 was last weekend at Buttonwillow with a great turnout and splendid weather! Our June DE at Laguna Seca had to be rescheduled to August because of track paving work.

Drive N Dines and other social tours are quite frequent now that the weather has stabilized. Look for email blasts with details and head out on some great back country roads – and experience good food and camaraderie.

On a personal note, our CCCR Coastalaire Editor, Bob “Kit” Kitamura, is experiencing some serious health issues. Kit’s intention is to keep working on Coastalaire as it is a labor of love for him! We are going to try and keep Coastalaire on schedule one way or another. Please keep Bob in your thoughts going forward.

Hope to see you at an event soon! Joe

If you missed it, here is our article in the April Panorama, in the From the Regions section.

PANORAMA - From the Regions

Get Out & Drive ........

Thank you for your patience on awaiting our monthly publication. It has been a difficult time for my family and myself as I deal with the cancer I just found out I have. The doctors are optimistic as I go through the treatment process. My priority is focused on my health right now so our publication will be coming out a little slower for the next 3-6 months. My son, Chris, a graphic designer is fortunately able to help. We are also fortunate to have board members that can keep you updated on what is coming up and changing through our great online communication system. This is a busy year for us regionally along with the national PCA group. Hopefully I will be able to see you out there at some of our events.

One of the few fun things I have started to do, despite my illness is get out and drive my Porsche to the many relatively known and unknown historic buildings and sites on the Central

Coast. The first one I did was the Old Cuesta Hanger Building at Cuesta College. Some will be known to you but many are off the “beaten” path like a few of the old buildings at Cuesta and Cal Poly. I am trying to do one a month, we will see if I can keep up with that.

At the last minute I added TransformersRise of the Beasts story since it uses a Porsche as a main character on page 19.

I hope many of you will be going to the 2023 Porsche Parade this year.

We will see all of you out there in the “sunshine” as we “Get Out and Drive!”

PORSCHE Modernizes It’s Crest

Porsche modernizes its crest for the first time in 15 years — can you spot the differences?

It’s the sixth update of the company’s logo.

The Porsche crest has adorned the company’s cars for over seven decades, but now it’s being refreshed for the modern age. According to the company It took Porsche styling and marketing gurus three years to come up with the new logo. The differences are subtle, but once you notice them you won’t be able to unsee them.

Prior to 1952, Porsche cars were identified by the name “Porsche” in lettering. A competition sent to German art schools asked for a logo, but none of the submissions felt right to management. The crest we know today was then conceived by Franz Xaver Reimspieß, who is said to have designed the Volkswagen logo as well, back in 1936.

Since its introduction in 1952 on the steering wheels of the 356, the Porsche crest has been updated five times, in 1954, 1963, 1973, 1994 and most recently in 2008 — the progression is shown above, with the new design at right. Throughout that time the same basic elements have remained. The rearing horse is from the seal of Porsche’s headquarters city, which once specialized in horse breeding (Stuttgart is German for “stud

garden”). The antlers and black and red stripes were from the coat of arms and state colors of WürttembergHohenzollern.

Why did it take designers three years to update a logo that retains all the same elements? Joachim Paetzel, a color and trim specialist, said, “A trademark is not designed ‘off the cuff’ within a few days. You have to go back to it again and again, sometimes at longer intervals. The second or third look can reveal to you things that you want to optimize, until it finally achieves a harmonious, natural effect. Only then can you say with satisfaction: ‘This is exactly how it has to be!’”

The latest update includes a revised horse, the readdition of the word “Stuttgart,” and a more subtle gold color. The goosebump texture of the background is no more, smoothed out on gold and black surfaces. All of those are fine, but on the red sections a honeycomb pattern adds modernity that ends up feeling a bit too techy. Might as well add carbon fiber to the black sections, no?

The good news is that if you don’t like it, the company offers all the historic crests through Porsche Classic. The crest update coincides with the brand’s 75th anniversary party, scheduled for June 8. It starts appearing on cars at the end of 2023.

WEATHERTECH LAGUNA SECA DRIVERS EDUCATION UPDATE

It certainly was disappointing to hear that our June Driver Education event at WeatherTech Laguna Seca was canceled, but have a new date of Friday, Aug 25th. We still have the upgraded 92db sound limit, a Friday not a Monday. Hopefully the new date works better for everyone. Registration will open May 1st, at MotorsportsReg.com under CCCR Laguna Seca Aug 2023. An email will be sent out to everyone in the club and the drivers that were registered for the June date prior to the cancellation. The track should be well worn in by August, plus the weather could be better in August than the June “gloom” date we had.

By the time you read this article our first DE at Buttonwillow will have been completed. Be sure to read the article detailing how the event went in the Coastalaire. Our second date at Buttonwillow still has not been set. The track management will not schedule any track dates for the new track until the pavement is completed. At this time the paving is not started, or according to management, even scheduled to start. It is very disappointing, but hopefully we will hear soon that construction has started. If we do not have positive news in the next month, we will look for another venue for our third DE of the year, maybe sometime in the late fall.

We are always looking for new drivers for the track events. If you have not tried driving on a racetrack at least once, you should. It is not Formula 1, Grand Prix or even NASCAR, it is just a group of people like you and me testing our skills and our cars. PCA is by far the safest car club to track with.

If you have any questions about the driving events. Be sure to contact me at Aircooled911sc@gmail.com or call 805 431-0919.

Thanks, Bob Bruington

Rennsport Reunion 7

If you’ve ever dreamed about attending the largest gathering of Porsche racecars and meeting the legendary drivers and engineers who made the marque, your chance is coming up at the end of September 2023. Rennsport Reunion 7 will take place September 28 through October 1, 2023 at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California.

Porsche Motorsport for over 50 years. First as a technician and ultimately as CEO of Porsche Motorsport North America from January 1990 to February 2004. He was responsible for shaping Porsche’s motorsport presence in the US into what it is today, and still continues to do so as a consultant. “I never dreamed one day I would be honored in this way”, said Springer.

Patrick Long, whose lengthy list of racing accomplishments include, being 3-time IMSA Champion, GT Class wins driving a Porsche 911 at the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Petit Le Mans, and others, is excited to share the human stories behind the legends of the Porsche motorsport legacy: “Porsche is special in that the history

This year the theme for the Seventh Rennsport Reunion is: “Icons of Porsche”. The title refers to the talented people who have driven Porsche to success for the past 75 years!

2023 marks Porsche’s 75th anniversary, setting the stage for a celebration of unprecedented fanfare for Porsche enthusiasts.

Over the course of the four-day event you’ll get a peak at Porsche’s past, present and future.

Chosen as Grand Marshalls for this gathering, are the first-ever Porsche Motorsport North America CEO, Alwin Springer and the three-time IMSA GT2 Champion, Patrick Long.

Alwin Springer has been a part of

“The icons of Porsche have influenced what has happened on track and on the street no matter what their titles might be. Alwin’s influence can be seen on the track and on the roads today. That

is what Rennsport is about and I am deeply honored to share this role with him. But we are only the figureheads. This is about the icons of the brand that we will have at Rennsport Reunion 7 this fall.”

There is nothing else like it in the World. Until you experience it, you

won’t know what it’s like when the world’s largest get-together of Porsche racecars and drivers meet. It’s a place where Porsche owners, racers, collectors and enthusiasts rub elbows with renowned drivers and legendary engineers. And then there are the cars. Some of the rarest Porsches ever made and new

vehicle reveals are just steps away from hot racing action, fan zones and meet-and-greets with living icons. It’s part motorsport, part car show and part family reunion.

You can attend live performances from a lineup of musical artists, you can view a collection of rare Porsche vehicles of the past 75 years and watch the unveiling of upcoming Porsches. You can meet with legends of Porsche culture and history as they share their stories, and you can watch in awe as historic Porsche racecars take to the track, side-by-side.

This Rennsport Reunion promises to be bigger and more thrilling than ever. Don’t miss out on the most anticipated, most momentous celebration in Porsche history.

Stuttgart Market Letter

cars-built year to date and an uber-rare 911 GT2 Evo failed to sell at $440,000, a far cry from where this car should have been.

As the only one 3.3-liter car and one 3.6-liter car sold with one of each not selling. With a 50% sell-through rate, there isn’t anything to write home about. 930 Turbos fared much better however with an 89% sell-through rate of 9 cars with the high point being a 1988 911 Turbo Cabriolet with the M505 Slant Nose package at $332,000.

Absent from the $300k club this month were delivery mileage 992 GT3s with a 2023 PTS Olympic Blue Touring with a 6-speed only bringing $295,000. A PTS Touring 6-Speed used to be your ticket to $300+, but it looks like that ship has sailed and other sellers need to adjust their reserves as we saw a 33% sellthrough rate. That doesn’t mean all GT3s didn’t do well though. Modified 997.2 GT3 RS’ had their month with two examples bringing above average RS money at $246,000 and $338,000 for a Shark Werks modified 4.1-liter example.

With 74% of the 506 Porsches on offer in April bringing in a whopping $29.9m, you might find it hard to believe that not a single car sold for over $500,000. But that was the case this month with our top 10 sales as follows: 2016 911 R $470,000,

Normally aspirated 993s have started to level out as well with an average price of $80,500 paid for a coupe although we did have a couple of surprises. One was a Supercharged 3.8-liter Coupe that sold for $172,000 and a ‘96 Targa 6-Speed that crossed the $100k mark at $101,000. Remember when nobody wanted a “greenhouse” Targa? Not anymore. Another surprise was the $296,000 paid for a 1995 993 RS Clubsport which was the lowest price we’ve seen by far since way back in the beginning of 2019.

But it wasn’t all modern classics making moves in April either. 356s looked good with a 78% sell-through rate with the top sale being a 1957 356A Coupe with boatloads of patina for $150,000. On the classic 911 side of the market, we saw a 55% sell-through rate and a top sale of $259,503 (not including buyer’s premium) for a 1972 ‘Ölklappe’ Coupe in exceptionally rare right-hand drive configuration at Bonhams’ Goodwood Members’ Meeting sale.

1997 911 Turbo S $465,000, 2018 911 GT2 RS Weissach

$434,000, 2019 911 Speedster $396,000, 1993 911 Turbo 3.6 $370,000, 2018 911 GT2 RS Weissach $346,500, 2011 911 GT3 RS 4.1-liter $338,000, 2019 911 Speedster $335,000, 1988 911 Turbo Cabriolet M505 $332,000, and a 2023 911 Turbo S Coupe $320,000.

So, what does that tell us about the market? For one, limited production cars with GT engines are still hot with two 991 GT2 RS’ and two 991 Speedsters making the top 10. And two, aircooled turbos still command big money although the market has shown some signs of softening.

Let’s start with the air-cooled Turbo market which had an 80% sell-through rate from 20 cars totaling just over $3m. The overall 993 Turbo market has appeared to level out with an average of $201,000, about where it was last month. And although our second-highest car sold for the month was a 993 Turbo S at $465,000, that was the lowest price paid for one of only 345

So where were the million-dollar sales this month? Well, without any large auctions in April we didn’t have the opportunity to see any true “star cars” cross the block. And the absence of a Carrera GT or 959 meant that it would take a VERY special 911 or 356 to sell although we did have the opportunity with the 993 GT2 Evo mentioned prior. But that all changes over the next two months, as we already have both a 959 and Carrera GT set to end in May and June brings us the 75th Anniversary Porsche sale in Atlanta hosted by Broad Arrow auctions. Will you be there? If so, look for the guy in the Stuttgart Market Letter sweatshirt and say “hello”.

The

CCCRPCA Board Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 5:05 PM at Porsche SLO.

Our Board:

Attending were Ron Green, Chuck Jennings, Bob Bruington, Joe Shubitowski, Carol Walker, Bill Chadwick, Gil Igleheart, Jeff Bartel, Scott Burns, Andy Winterbottom, Joe Kuntze, and Mark Schilling. Absent were Bob Kitamura and Sanja Brewer.

President: Joe Shubitowski sadly announced that Bob Kitamura has been diagnosed with throat cancer. There was good feedback on the event at Buona Tavola. Andy received a letter from a professional photographer who wants to photograph our driving events for free in return for using the photos for his advertising. No decision was made. Joe will attend the Zone 8 President’s meeting on April 17. We discussed to put Santa Barbara Porsche in the April Coastalaire and agreed to send them an invoice for the ad.

Vice President: Bob Bruington said we are continuing to advertise Santa Barbara Porsche as a sponsor.

Secretary: Carol sent the minutes by email. Chuck moved to accept the minutes, Andy seconded, and all approved to accept the minutes.

Treasurer: Bill Chadwick reported we had $37,597 at the beginning of the year and as of the end of February, we have $63,009. Last year, our biggest income months were March, April, and May. He received a bill for the taxes from the CPA for $1,695. Bill has records from 2015 and asked if they can be tossed, and yes, the law says to keep them 7 years. Advertising/sponsors German Auto Performance and Porsche SLO have not paid to date. Andy moved to accept the report, Ron seconded, and all approved.

Membership: Joe Shubitowski reported for Sanja there are four new members, 1 transfer in, 2 transfers out, 1 test drive and six lapsed, which Sanja will contact. We have 718 total members, 433 primary and 285 affiliate.

Activities: Gil Igleheart talked to Sam at Porsche SLO about the large number of people meeting there and he is OK with it. Everything is set for Healdsburg with some members of the Redwood Region joining us on Monday evening happy hour. Gil introduced the thought of a factory tour to Germany and Joe Kuntze looked into it with the cost being at least $10,000 for 7 days drive/tour.

Upcoming events:

4/29 - tech session with Rock Chip Armor

4/30 - Lunch catered by La Palapa at the Baywood Inn, music after at the Merrimaker

5/27 - Longbranch

6/10 - Harbor Hut

6/24 - Brooks Burgers

7/8 - Longbranch

7/29 - Brooks Burgers

8/12 - Cypress Ridge

Joe Kuntze will take a wildflower tour in a couple of weeks to Shell Creek and an event in June or July at Cass Winery.

Safety: Jeff Bartel asked Gil to let him know everything is Ok for Healdsburg. No insurance is needed for Rock Chip or Baywood

lunch.

Driving: Autocross: Chuck Jennings agreed that no EV’s will be allowed on the Autocross track. There are 61 people signed up for the next Autocross event, with 19 instructors. We spent $450 to renew the timing license from Pronto. The Autocross school will provide coffee and donuts, and volunteers are advised to renew your TSA badge. We have a storage unit now, so take PCA items out of your garage and get the keys from Chuck and Joe to utilize the storage space. The national Corvair club will have an event here in 2025 and they want us to put on an Autocross event. It was suggested they join up with the Corvette club.

Driver's Education: Bob Bruington reports the track sealing will begin tomorrow morning and it will take two days to complete. We might be able to test drive it next week. Laguna Seca canceled our 6/26 date, due to rain caused delalys, and has been rescheduled to 8/25. They are giving us a 15% discount due to the change. There are 36 drivers registered for Buttonwillow to date. The tech for that is 4/20 at The Stable. No more information has been provided on scheduling an event at Buttonwillow in October as the track paving hasn’t been scheduled to date. And, no EV’s will be allowed on the race tracks.

Newsletter: Bob Kitamura was absent but is finalizing the April issue of the Coastalaire, which is a print month.

Website: Scott Burns showed us three versions of the proposed website. One was the old web page, two is a slight upgrade, and three is the most modern version. He will use Word Press, and by using the existing template the cost is $25-$30. To transfer the web page will take 30-40 hours from a developer, at a cost of $1500-$2000 using the template. Andy moved to use version three, Gil seconded, and all approved.

Director at Large: Ron Green was wondering where the hard copy is of the RPM manual. It hasn’t been sent to Joe yet. There are two corrections in the updated bylaws. Page 13 of the current bylaws require us to put changes in the Coastalaire, with members voting by email with a deadline. The next step is to put the changes in the newsletter and send an email to members with a link to the bylaws. Joe will talk to Bob K. and get back to Ron with the next step.

Old Business: None

New Business: Joe Kuntze is involved in a fundraiser for a not for profit in Mexico and wondered if Bob Bruington would donate two hours of driving time.

The next meeting will be May 3 at Porsche SLO. The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 pm.

Respectfully submitted,
