We’re delighted to welcome our readers in Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton. This edition of one of our publications, Tourist Queensland, delivered just before winter descends with its customary chill, seemed the ideal opportunity for our many resorts, attractions and tour operators in Queensland to introduce themselves. This is the state where Australia shines, with our balmy winter months, and year-round beach weather in the tropical regions. You’re sure to find some excellent ideas for your next Queensland holiday no matter what time of year you choose – we hope you find Tourist Queensland an informative and colourful snapshot of the best our state has to offer visitors. Our other editions of Tourist Queensland during the year are available at the 800 pick-up points established over 20 years throughout the state. We have a fabulous prize to give away – a three-night Fraser Island resort stay plus Whale Watching Tour and a Brisbane break at the Marriott Hotel. More details on page 14 Go to Kiwi Korner on page 18 and read what these former New Zealanders who now live, work, and play here in Queensland tell about their move to Queensland. We welcome your feedback on Tourist Queensland so email Michael@coastlinenews.com.au or check out www.coastlinenews. com.au for more about Queensland.
Enjoy your stay. Michael McRae, Managing Editor, Coastline Newspaper Group
As well as Brisbane, you can fly direct to Cairns and Sunshine Coast with Air New Zealand. Cairns Airport CEO, Kevin Brown said the airline had been an invaluable airline partner for Cairns over the past 26 years when it launched a single weekly service from Auckland. He said that Air New Zealand are well placed to adjust their schedule to meet seasonal demand on the service ranging from two per week up to five times in the peak season when Kiwis like to escape the winter chills and Aussies head to the ski-fields. The 2014 season from Auckland to the Sunshine Coast runs from June to October with three flights a week during the peak period on Sundays,Tuesdays and a new Friday service added. The remainder of the season offers twice weekly flights on Sundays and Fridays. Next year will involve 42 return trips over 17 weeks with the 2015/16 season extending to 28 weeks and the 2016/17 season at 30 weeks from June to January, with our Minister for Tourism Jann Stuckey welcoming the extension.
Where’d that name come from?
Brisbane to host G20 in November Brisbane’s rapidly growing global reputation as a city of opportunity was affirmed by its selection as the host of the 2014 G20 Leaders Summit, the world’s primary forum for global economic co-operation and decision-making. This will be the most significant meeting of world leaders ever hosted in Australia. About 4000 delegates and 3000 domestic and international media will converge on the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre for the summit from November 15-16 with a public holiday for Brisbane on November 14. Brisbane ranked in the top seven most liveable cities in the world at the prestigious 2012 Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize and has been named one of the Top 10 Asian Cities of the Future by the London Financial Times fDi Magazine. It will be the 9th host city of the G20 Leaders Summit, joining the elite ranks of cities such as London, Toronto and Seoul. TOURIST QUEENSLAND
More international visitors than ever are enjoying the pleasures our State has to offer with the Whitsundays the pick of the regions attracting strong numbers from the UK and Europe while the Gold Coast thrived from direct flights from Singapore and growth from China. The International Visitor Survey for 2013 from Tourism Research Australia showed 143,000 of the 648,000 who chose the Tropical North as their destination were from China alone. “While New Zealand continues to be Queensland’s largest market with 384,000 visitors, China remained our fastest growing and largest international market, said Tourism Minister, Jann Stuckey.

Humpybong School’s famous students

H
Queensland has its share of places with funny names so here are the origins of a few of them. Humpybong – an aboriginal word meaning “empty huts, or dead shelters which came into use when the British first settlers abandoned the area (later named Redcliffe) in favour of Brisbane. Humpybong School at Redcliffe had some well-known students, among them world famous musicians, The Bee Gees who settled in Redcliffe after emigrating from England. Coincidentally Colin Peterson who became their drummer later in their career for a brief period, also went to Humpybong. Colin shot to fame as the cheeky kid in the 1950s movie, Smiley. (he now lives in the Sunshine Coast hinterland). Yorkeys Knob – north of Cairns was named after a fisherman from Yorkshire, George Lawson. Attempts to rename it Yorkeys Beach after numerous jibes were resisted, and Yorkeys Knob it remains. Wonglebong 58km south-east of Brisbane in the Gold Coast Hinterland, it’s an aboriginal word meaning “forgotten sound. No-one remembers what sound it actually refers to. Banana – no, there weren’t a lot of bananas growing in the small Central Queensland town. It was named after a dun-coloured working bull. Banana was used by stockmen when herding cattle into yards.

The only way to travel is as a couple! There are those who insist that the only way to travel is as a couple. Couples, they insist, are mutually supportive and they will remind you that two people sharing costs can travel more cheaply than when solo. There are drawbacks, however, when travelling in tandem and the most serious of these is that posed by other couples that presume that you are just dying to meet guess who? Other couples! It is not unknown, for example, for couples to become bored with each other’s company, particularly honeymooners newly arrived at the realization that they have just made the biggest mistake of their lives. When this occurs, they will inevitably seek out the company of other couples – you, for example – in the desperate hope that you will relieve the relentless tedium of their partner’s company. They will also hope that you will reassure them that marriage is wonderful and that while there is always a period of adjustment, things will ``work themselves out.’’ Some people, married for 50 years, have been known to pass into the hereafter still wondering when it was that things were going to ``work themselves out.’’ If you are alone you are safe from these marauding twosomes but if you are a couple, the cheery ``Good morning!’’ shouted across the width of several breakfast tables can presage conversational misery on a grand scale. Their next step is to ask from where you hail and then suggest meeting for a drink. At this point, the wise travellers will reveal that they are suffering from haemorrhagic fever

and excuse themselves. Failure to do this will see them exchanging addresses, a fraught process when dealing with people who can’t stand each other’s company. These are also precisely the sort of people who six months after your holiday, will email you with the joyous news that they will be arriving in your city in three weeks time. And the other good news? They have decided to take you up on that generous offer you made the night you drank 10 gin slings, the night you said they could stay with you for as long as they liked.
"That’s hilarious. They actually believe we gave them our real address and phone number!" I once travelled with a woman who drew couples to her like moths to a flame. Language was not a constraint, a barrier she overcame by speaking broken English very slowly. She did, however, speak French very badly and so it was that while we were on a cruise, she went ashore and bought
six pairs of shoes. Returning to the ship she announced this news to the French couple which had attached themselves to us. Alas, her imperfect French translated as ``I went shore and bought six young men.’’ The husband regarded her with awe but not the wife. They fled and never spoke to us again. If travelling with a mate, ensure there is no hidden agenda. I once left Australia with a male friend who somehow forgot to tell me that he had arranged for his girlfriend to meet us halfway through our driving holiday across the United States. We were camping which meant once she arrived, I was evicted from our two man tent and slept in the back of our station wagon. Each night I’d lie there in my sleeping bag staring at the roof lining while stuffing things in my ears – tissues, cotton wool, half eaten Minties – it didn’t matter – anything to try and block out the moans and groans rattling the walls of the nearby tent. We parted company after a week and my Minties and I went our separate way. My partner has accused me of being anti-social when we travel. I have pointed out that this is untrue. It’s just that I don’t like meeting people.

All those 40 tonne mammals can’t be wrong! While you’re at the Bay for whale-watching from July to November, make the most of your visit with plenty more to see and do. It’s the gateway to Fraser Island and you can see it from a different angle as you leap into a beautiful skydive location, make your own waves on a jetski or join the professionals for world-class game fishing. Stinger-free calm swimming and the long strip of sandy beach and affordable accommodation including camping, has made Hervey Bay a family favourite for generations. The Esplanade – The foreshore strip of Hervey Bay is dotted with boutiques, cafes and restaurants on one side and opens onto a long sandy beach and the Pacific Ocean on the other. A 15km footpath and bikeway weaves its way along the beach side of The Esplanade introducing its users to picnic facilities and playgrounds along the way. Runs along the seafront from the Urangan Boa Harbour with a short side trip to the Botanic Gardens, a green sanctuary growing out of 6,000 year old sand dunes. Urangan Boat Harbour – home to a fleet of whale watching and fishing vessels, and yachts. The Harbour is the access point to some of the Bay’s most popular tours and passenger ships to Fraser Island. Fashion boutiques, restaurants, cafes and resorts all call the Harbour home. Urangan Pier – In 1917 the Pier was more than a kilometre long and included a railway line for exporting sugar and coal. Fraser Island – the world’s largest sand island
When you read “dwarfed by towering ancient virgin rainforests” it’s true, you are and it’s awesome. The world’s largest sand island also offers white sandy endless beaches, crystal-clear blue-green lakes and purity of water flowing into creeks.
To truly appreciate the remarkable natural beauty of World Heritage Listed Fraser Island you must experience it first hand.
Here you’ll see the stark contrast of talclike white sand and blue-green window lakes, the ancient dignity of towering rainforests growing in seemingly infertile sands, the purity of the water flowing
in the many creeks – it is possible to go on endlessly, just like Fraser’s endless beaches. Spanning 166,000 hectares and stretching 123km, the island is composed almost entirely of sand built up from tidal action over more than 700,000 years – the world’s oldest recorded dune building sequence. Accommodation – a number of excellent private options from holiday units, resorts such as Kingfisher Bay and Eurong and camping permits available at various locations to suit. Access around the island is by 4WD
only and barges depart daily from River Heads and Inskip Point; air charters and transfers depart from Hervey Bay. Tours are a great way to see Fraser – one-day safari, two-day backpacking or longer camping adventure – check out the right one for you. World-Heritage listed, the island has huge sand blows to climb, champagne pools to bubble in, coloured sand cliffs and is a nature-lover and fisherman’s paradise. Information 1800 444 155.

HERVEY BAY & FRASER ISLAND Hervey Bay’s whales, are as friendly as the locals
Everyone has good old fashioned fun here - well that’s what the whales and their calves will be having while you’re going to be awestruck and amazed at their antics. Each year an estimated 8000 whales migrate from Antarctica to the warm islands of the Whitsundays to breed. However it’s between late July and early November on their return to the south that mothers bring their calves to Hervey Bay to frolic and say hello to tourists.
Choosing a vessel – the fleet at Urangan Boat Harbour offers a diverse range of choice with underwater observation rooms, audio technology and qualified marine experts. From doublestorey cruisers to twin-hulled catamarans the different sized vessels let you decide between an intimate experience and fullon excitement.
You can make a day of it or head out for a morning or afternoon tour. The size and facilities of the vessels vary – what is assured are highly experienced crews who are well versed in whale habits and other wildlife that you might see in the bay including dolphins and turtles. Hervey Bay offers an unrivalled network of experienced, passionate and dedicated whale watching operators with guaranteed sightings. Whale welfare is paramount. Crews work to a strict code of conduct and although they stop the boats short of the pods, curious whales routinely approach, swimming right up to say Hello and introduce their calves.
Whale facts – did you know? Whales eat krill – a tiny shrimp. Humpback whales are the third most endangered species of all big whales. They weigh up to 45 tonnes, equivalent to 11 elephants or 60 people each. The largest ever specimen was 19 metres long and had pectoral fins of six metres each.
They can live for 45 to 50 years. Calves drink up to 600 litres of milk containing 60% fat each day. Humpbacks belong to the group of whales known as rorquals. Rorquals also include the Blue Whale and Minke Whale with common characteristics being dorsal fins on the
back and ventral pleats running from the tip of the lower jaw to navel area. A pod of whales can also be called a gam, school, herd or grind. Humpbacks breathe air at the surface of the water through two blowholes near the top of the head.
Don’t miss these on Fraser Island Eli Creek – Pumping four million litres of water into the ocean every hour, Eli Creek is the largest freshwater creek along the east coast. Seabelle Restaurant – superb fine dining at Kingfisher Bay Resort’s signature award-winning Seabelle with its distinctive Bush Tucker influences and matching wines is a treat well worth indulging. Combining style and laid-back elegance – the perfect way to complete your Fraser Island experience. The Cathedrals – The Butchella people believed these iconic cliffs of coloured sands were permanently stained when the gods brushed up against them. Central Station – Home to a community of more than 100 people in the 1920s timber logging days, Central Station proudly showcases its history along with several forest walks to peaceful Wanggoolba Creek and Basin Lake. Lake McKenzie – with sparkling blue water this is one of the bestknown freshwater lakes and a popular swimming spot. To see one of the world’s rare dune lakes visit Lake Wabby. The Maheno Wreck – Once renowned as the fastest trans-atlantic crossing as a World War 1 hospital ship, the Maheno succumbed to a cyclone before wrecking on the shores of Fraser Island. Indian Head – This distinctive TOURIST QUEENSLAND
rocky cliff is a national grandstand for absorbing captivating views of crystal clear water painted with manta rays, dolphins and other marine life. Champagne Pools – Swimmers flock to this location where waves crash over rocks lining sandy pools with a golden froth reminiscent of champagne bubbles.

The Family Funday Pass provides entry for a family of four for $69, - a saving of $25 - while the Ultimate Family Bundle offers meals and drinks,

Come to see the Turtles who come to see us! Mon Repos Beach 15 minutes from Bundaberg’s city centre has the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on Australia’s eastern mainland and most significant loggerhead population in the South Pacific. Turtle Watching Time begins in early November through to March when the hatchlings scurry out of the nest down to the ocean. These “grand old ladies of the deep” can travel up to 3000 kms to their traditional nesting beach every few years. “Researchers now also have an idea where they go in between visits,” said one of the rangers. “A satellite tracking device placed on the turtle’s carapace sends signals showing how long they take to travel from feeding grounds to nesting areas.”
Loggerheads begin breeding around age 30 with one of the oldest tagged at Mon Repos 60 years old. It is believed they live to about 100. Rangers and volunteers do their utmost to ensure maximum comfort and minimum stress to the magnificent creatures, while allowing tourists to get up close and personal, to witness nature unfolding. To begin your Mon Repos Turtle Experience you are required to book and pre-purchase tickets. Tickets can only be booked through Bundaberg Region Visitor Services by phoning 41 53 8888 or www.bundabergregion.com.au

TROPICAL NORTH Escape the winter chill – warm up in NQ. Want to make your friends envious this winter? Tell them you’re going to North Queensland and casually mention the balmy weather, palm trees and swimmable seas. Snorkel or dive the Great Barrier Reef, set sail in the Whitsundays and trek back in time in the primeval Daintree Rainforest. Drive the Savannah Way to the remote Gulf Savannah. This tropical paradise is truly at its best from June to September, when the temperature averages 25 degrees Celsius and the turquoise waters are stinger free. From sunny Cairns, you’ll find a range of midwinter digs. Get golden beach frontage in tranquil Mission Beach, soak up the low-key tropical glamour of Port Douglas or indulge in true resort luxury at Palm Cove.
Along with Cairns and the backpacker havens of Airlie Beach and Cape Tribulation, these are all great bases for exploring North Queensland’s most famous attraction - the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. Further south, try sailing the 74 idyllic, mostly uninhabited islands of the Whitsundays. Relax in a resort on Daydream, Hamilton, Hayman or Lindeman Islands. Bushwalk through rainforest on South Molle or Long Islands, fly over spectacular Heart Reef and write your name in the famous white sand of Whitehaven Beach. OK, maybe you should hold back a little when showing your friends your holiday shots. We all know where they would have liked to be this winter.
Skyrail Rainforest Cableway The most beautiful rainforest experience you’ll find is a world first in environmental tourism taking you on an amazing experience over Australia’s World Heritage listed Tropical Rainforest canopy and deep into the forest. It spans 7.5 kms over pristine rainforest with panoramic views of the Cairns tropical region and the Coral Sea. Alight at Skyrail’s two rainforest mid-stations, where you’ll explore from the forest floor on boardwalks, scenic look-outs and in the state-of-the-art Rainforest Interpretation Centre. Voted Australia’s Best Major Tourist Attraction, the multi-award
winning Skyrail is recognised not only as a premier tourist experience, but as a world leader in eco-tourism, providing you with a truly unique rainforest experience available no where else in the world. Skyrail can be enjoyed as complete day tour or combined as a package with a number of Cairns’ other attractions including The Kuranda Scenic Railway and cruises to The Great Barrier Reef. Skyrail’s Smithfield Terminal is 15 minutes drive from Cairns with Port Douglas 50 minutes north of Skyrail with both locations serviced by coach transfers.
No chance of getting lost International visitors to Cairns and the Tropical North won’t be lost in translation with Down Under Tours’ new GPS multilingual interpretive guiding system. Director, James Dixon said the new technology is an Australian first using a patented product and set to revolutionise the way non-English speaking visitors enjoy the Tropical North. He said the beauty of it is accuracy
– within 500 mm of a particular landmark or point of interest, and the fact it can be operated manually outside the vehicle during activities, such as the Daintree River Cruise. “The commentary is lively and interesting including a series of hero stories with sound effects, the Battle Of The Coral Sea or arrival of Captain Cook for example. The company has also expanded its interpretive products with written
translation in all Kuranda Boarding Pass documentation.
