TOURIST QUEENSLAND
We have an average of 300 sunny days a year!
Editor's message Kia Ora New Zealand We’re delighted to be bringing our friends and new readers in Auckland and Wellington information about Queensland’s popular visitor destination and tourism hotspots. We hope this end of year edition once again provides some valuable ideas of where you’d like to spend your next visit to our sunny shores – things to do and where to stay. Did you know Tourism Australia research revealed Aussies are reluctant to take their annual leave, working longer hours and taking less time off!
Get ready to take home marvellous memories of your Queensland experience – hours of sunshine and year-round tropical climates cultivate a sense of well-being and ultimate relaxation, along with the chance to indulge in your love of sports and outdoor recreation – it’s all here in this vast state of contrasts. Queensland’s cities and towns are thriving with cosmopolitan energy and a strongly defined sense of place. Make sure you catch all the important city sights. With innate optimism and eclectic appeal it’s no wonder Queensland is recognised as offering unbeatable nightlife, the most entertaining cities and why people from all corners of the globe come to live here. Fraser Island will amaze you - the world’s largest sand island is just off the coast of beautiful Hervey Bay, the whale-watching capital. Awesome, inspiring and unforgettable – it’s hard to explain seeing these massive friendly mammals up so close – from July to November – put whale watching on your list. More of nature’s wonders await - turtle nesting, whalewatching, koalas and crocs. Explore pristine beaches of the Sunshine and Gold Coasts, luxurious Whitsunday Islands and Heritage-Listed Daintree Rainforest in the Tropical North. With over 200 National Parks and a range of unique rainforests
there’s something to please every nature-lover. One of the world’s seven natural marvels, the Great Barrier Reef is waiting for you to uncover its magic – under it, above it, on it – there’s so many ways to enjoy it. The 3000 individual reefs and coral islands harbour thousands of fish and marine creatures. Mon Repos Beach near Bundaberg has the largest turtle rookery in the southern hemisphere, where they return each year from November (to lay their eggs) to March (when the adorable hatchlings scurry to the ocean) – come and see! The Outback – there’s adventure out there! From rollicking stockmen to desert sand dunes and even the odd dinosaur – heritage-rich Waltzing Matilda Country of the central west, Mining Country in the north west - what a fantastic state of contrasts Queensland is! Visit the Qantas Museum in Longreach – a tribute to Australia’s international airline and The Stockmans Hall Of Fame. Where else but Queensland has an average of 300 sunny days a year? Average summer and winter temperatures range from 9C to 29C in Brisbane and 17C to 31C in Cairns. You won’t find anywhere much colder than 1C even in the hills of South East Queensland Country. Welcome to Queensland – let the sunshine in.

QueeNZanders
It’s hard to say just how many former New Zealanders now live, work, and play here in Queensland – some have truly made it their home – others still
yearn for Hangi and Hokey Pokey ice cream. We found four quite different Kiwis with interesting stories to tell about their move to Queensland.
Irene Fleming……from Whangarei I was born and raised in Whangarei with my three sisters, spending most of my early years in rural northland getting married and raising two daughters, and a move to Australia was unthought-of. In search of work and higher educational opportunities for my daughters, Brisbane was the first port of call where my two daughters still reside today and love it. A move to Bundaberg (4th best climate in the world was the draw card), work in the food service industry and securing a job in the kitchen of a licensed restaurant on the picturesque marina was a far cry from Whangarei possum trapping. When the head chef resigned during the owners’ overseas holiday I was instantly promoted to chef in charge. Loved the place and challenge so much I eventually bought it and the adjoining takeaway shop I now run a well respected restaurant, live on a boat in the marina, walk to work and love the lifestyle.
Although a seven day week business keeps me busy, nothing beats the climate and the freedom that constant warm weather allows. I now have two grandchildren and another on the way so life can be busy. I don’t miss winters and swimming in chilly oceans but still miss the old favourites - autumn and my vege and flower gardens. My husband Ian is a Canterbury man and he worked as a builder with his own business and spent 28 years in the metropolitan fire service. Ten years ago, with a misguided belief that he was old enough to retire, he started searching for warmer climes. After many internet hours Queensland emerged and this is now my home. Most businesses I dealt with had Kiwis employed, with a large proportion in management positions. Kiwis despite the ragging were considered good workers
Ian and Irene outside their restaurant – Baltimore Café.
Pat Vine from Wellington I was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1949. Our family moved to Rotorua when I was around two years old, so spent my schooling days there, and it was in 1973 that we ventured over to Australia. We did quite a lot of travelling from landing in Sydney, up the coast to Brisbane and then up North. We were in Gladstone at the time and we met up with some people who recommended to go to a place called Sapphire in Western Queensland where you just walk along the ground and pick up these lovely sapphires and they showed us their jar full of beautiful blue stones. Knowing nothing about gems, we decided we would travel up to Sapphire and see what they were talking about. Well I think it was love at first sight. We had a wonderful time talking to the locals
and specking sapphires, came back to Gladstone and decided if we could get work we would locate. A vacancy came up for a loader driver on a machinery mine, in those days machine mining was just getting started so we applied for the job and got it. We packed up our caravan and three children and started our life on the Sapphire Gemfields. In those days you picked a spot that you thought would be a good base, as there was no electricity or water so it was a real pioneering type of living. I home-schooled the children by correspondence, baked bread everyday and of course the never ending carting of water for our use. We got into the fossicking big time, doing up to 300 buckets of wash a day, hard work, but we found some beautiful stones.
Alex White…….of Warkworth “I grew up in the Three Kings area of Auckland and at 23 married Rosalie. As a carpenter I built our first home above Henderson Valley which lead to also building homes for friends.” After running his successful full time contract building business for 16 years, Alex and Rosalie decided to experience farm life in Paparoa, “The three kids loved country life and as they grew older and seeking jobs we ended up in Huapai for 6 years on an orchard, enjoying apples, nectarines, peaches and plums.” During this time Alex leased out the orchard to embark on three working trips to American Samoa, West Samoa and in Fiji, where he rebuilt Treasure and Beachcomber Island resorts after cyclone damage. “Much of the damage was caused by flying coconuts smashing windows and roof tiles letting in heaps of rain.”
From there I wanted to facet the gems, so I taught myself to cut and did so for 35 years. In 1979 I thought a gem shop would be great so I started Pats Gems, and then in 1989 started the original bucket wash, Pats Gems Tourist Fossicking Park where you can buy a bucket of sapphire bearing dirt, sieve and wash and search for your own gems. Then followed a Licensed Cafe/Restaurant and cabins, and now I am doing drive tours around the fields. One of my daughters has followed in my footsteps and has her own gem and craft shop down the road from mine. I am still here 42 years later enjoying the lovely lifestyle, the tourists, the weather, the Pat in front of her Gem Shop at Sapphire healthy life. Thank you Australia. on the Gemfields in Central Queensland.
(and Bargara Beach in winter or spring)
Falling in love with Bargara Beach Time for another change, and in 1988 Alex and Rosalie (now children-free) came over to Queensland checking out the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay and the Bundaberg region where they fell in love with Kellys Beach at Bargara and bought a home on the beachfront. At 52, he was ready for more challenges, purchasing land, designing and building 39 villas (Lake View Park) followed by developing another 50 acres on the other side of beautiful Bargara Beach. “Michael McRae from Coastline Newspapers publishers of this Tourist Queensland handled all my advertising both TV and print. This land was covered with trees, swampy and with many huge boulders above and below ground – other developers had been discouraged by this but I wasn’t.” Alex aimed to retain as many trees as
possible to achieve a park-like development “not just bulldoze, clear and burn.” In 2000 they moved back to New Zealand again to be closer to grandchildren, dividing their time between the two countries for the next six years. “We’ve kept a Bargara beachfront apartment and come across for holidays usually in winter or spring.” “Finally I should say I am a New Zealander and love the place – our children and grandchildren live there, but we also love the Queensland coast and have travelled extensively around Australia. It’s fun in Queensland watching TV with my Aussie friends when the All Blacks play the Wallabies, and everyone is dressed in either Gold or Black and really getting into the spirit of the friendly joshing Kiwis and Aussies are famous for.”
Alex and Rosalie White at Bargara Beach
Colin Moyle ………from Auckland (Supermarine Shipwright Services - Sea Change) I received training as an apprentice boat builder at the renowned yard of McMullen & Wing Panmure Auckland. I decided to move to Australia in January 1980. Interestingly, in the early 1980s you didn't need a passport or Visa to enter Australia. I found a job within three days in Sydney working for the well respected boat builder Ces Quilky, who decided on the spot to make me the Foreman. I was 26yrs of age and had eight tradesmen and four apprentices to lead. We built luxury yachts and 40ft police boats. We had three boats on the go at once. My work has taken me up to far north Queensland and along the NSW east coast. I enjoyed working for Kay Cottee O.E. (Australia's first female single handed round the world sailor.) I have built boats ranging from 8ft clinker dingys PAGE 4
to 78ft super yachts. I have met many celebrities and famous people, and through my work, made many life long friends who have invited me to their countries to stay with them at their homes. I am currently working on a yacht for a very well known Marine Biologist who lives in Hawaii. He decided while sailing it from Mexico, to have the vessel refitted by me here in Burnett Heads, as they had been clients on their first circumnavigation. Burnett Heads in Queensland is a great place to bring up a family, and I’ve found the people here to be warm and welcoming. You can go to the local shop and know most people by their first names. The local area has many intriguing destinations, including Lady Musgrave Island, Pancake Creek and of course Mon Repos. I enjoy the local wildlife here, a couple of times I have seen a kangaroo hopping
down the street, and the local birdlife seem friendly and curious. My overseas clients often say to me that they love the place, that they can go into old fashioned shops, not malls, and that they can walk down footpaths and not have to drive everywhere. They think Bundaberg is kind of quaint and it pleasantly reminds them of the early 1950s in America. They like the fact that they can obtain fittings and materials for their boats from the local merchants and that there are excellent tradesmen. When it comes to sport, although I have lived in Australia for the past 30 plus years, I still barrack for the All Blacks in Rugby Union. You can guarantee it’s going to be a damn good game.

Turtle Encounters – until March Beautiful Mon Repos Beach just 15 minutes from Bundaberg’s city centre has the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on Australia’s eastern mainland and most significant loggerhead population in the South Pacific. Turtle watching begins in November through to March when the hatchlings scurry out of the nest to the ocean. Mother turtles travel up to 3000 kms to their traditional nesting beach every few years. Now Wildlife Rangers know where they go in between, with satellite tracking devices placed on the carapace showing how long they take to travel from feeding grounds to their favourite nesting areas at Mon Repos. Loggerheads start breeding around 30 with the oldest tagged at Mon Repos 60 years old – they can live to about 100. To enjoy a Mon Repos Turtle Experience you must book and pre-purchase tickets through Bundaberg Region Visitor Services, phone 0741 53 8888 or www.bundabergregion.org/destinations/natural-encounters/turtles.

We’d like to travel from Brisbane to Cairns in a few months and are in no rush. What are our options?.........(Murray Jackson, Wellington) Murray, if you want to take your time and perhaps stay overnight at some of the outstanding coastal centres along the 1800 km journey – try driving yourself. Here’s a sample of places you’ll see along our East Coast. Brisbane to Noosa on the Sunshine Coast (2 hours) then onto Hervey Bay on the Fraser Coast (2 hrs 40 mins) to Bundaberg (1 hr 30 mins -take a Bundy Rum Distillery Tour) and onto Gladstone (2 hrs) and Rockhampton (1 hr 30 mins) then full steam ahead to the Whitsundays and Airlie Beach (5 hrs) to Townsville(3 hrs 30 mins) onto Mission Beach (3 hrs) and your destination Cairns (2 hrs). Queensland Rail will get you to Cairns in 25 hours at speeds up to 160kmph on the Tilt Train. Choose standard seating or more comfy recliner “railbeds”. It stops at major regional centres along the way, departing Brisbane Mondays and Fridays and returning Wednesdays and Sundays. Passengers have access to a personal entertainment system – movies, music, radio books, power adaptor and USB port. ************** Our family are looking forward to swimming in Queensland but how safe is the ocean? We hear about sharks and deadly stingers….. (Julie Culkearns, Auckland) Oh Julie, no visit to Queensland is complete without a few days at the beach AND in the ocean. Visitors are more fearful of sharks than anything else over here with the Jaws movies of the 80s giving the wrong overly dramatised impression. Sharks are predators but humans are not their WWW.TOURISTQUEENSLAND.COM
natural prey, with shark nets checked regularly offshore. Follow these rules: Don’t swim at night, (they’re more active after dusk and before dawn) intoxicated, in murky waters, if you’re bleeding, where fish are being cleaned. On patrolled beaches if a shark is spotted, lifesavers sound a siren or ring a bell and order swimmers ashore. Marine Stingers – these are present north of Agnes Water near Gladstone – beaches at Bundaberg, Fraser Coast, Sunshine and Gold Coasts are stinger-free. Dangerous species include box jellyfish and Irukandji and the season is November to May.
Follow these rules: Swim at patrolled beaches, between red and yellow flags, don’t touch stingers washed up on the beach, swim in stinger nets provided or wear full-length lycra. If stung ring OOO, pour vinegar on the sting and ask lifesavers for help.

Just another day in paradise ...
Fraser Island – unique to Queensland Fraser Island has the absolute best that one island can offer – cool ancient rainforests to walk through, over 100 freshwater lakes to swim in, huge sand blows to climb, cliffs of stunning coloured sands and an amazing 120km beach highway complete with a visit to the Maheno Shipwreck. Did you know? Fraser’s complex sand mass extends 500 metres below sea level and it’s estimated the combined mass above and below the island is more that in the Sahara Desert. Lying just south of the Great Barrier Reef and off the coast from Hervey Bay, Fraser is the world’s largest sand island stretching for 123kms. It’s the only place on earth where you can stand dwarfed by ancient rainforests which
defy the laws of nature to grow to soaring heights out of nothing more than sand. Fraser has been built up by over 800,000 years of tidal action – the world’s largest and oldest dune building sequence. Its sands provide the base for an incredible landscape of stunning freshwater lakes including pristine Lake McKenzie and spectacular Lake Wabby. There are many ways to experience the island’s incredible sights – take a self-drive getaway, join a guided tour go on a camping safari or explore on foot on the Fraser Island Great Walk. Also known as K’gari (paradise) Fraser Island was home to the indigenous Butchulla people who lived on the island for over 5,000 years.

Emu Park, the second largest town on the Capricorn Coast, has honoured Cook's exploration with a monument, the famous 'Singing Ship', a soaring white sculpture with Great Keppel Island as a back drop. The Capricorn Coast is easily accessible by road, rail, coach and air and is situated 38 kilometres north east of Rockhampton.

If it’s treasure that you’re seeking or the opportunity to experience a real-life mining town,
The heart of the Channel Country has something to offer everyone The heart of the Channel Country has something to offer everyone Located deep in the heart of the Channel Country, the Barcoo region is one of the more remote shires with an area of 61,974 square kilometres in far Western Queensland, incorporating the townships of Jundah, Stonehenge and Windorah. The main industries are beef, oil, wool, opal, and tourism. The Thomson River flows into the shire from the north, while the Barcoo River
enters the east, merging to form Cooper Creek. This mosaic of channels flows on to Lake Eyre during the wet season. Improved roads and facilities make this area an attractive outback holiday destination. Jundah, Stonehenge and Windorah are linked together by a sealed road that continues on to either Quilpie or Longreach, giving an unbroken sealed road access from the east coast. Enriched with history, unique landscapes, distinctive flora, fauna and
serenity, that allows one to enjoy every moment and experience of the outback. The heart of the Channel Country has something to offer everyone. Travellers can choose to enjoy the tranquillity or experience one of the many annual events held in the local communities. Designated camping areas on permanent waterholes adjacent to each of the towns, give ample opportunities to fish or catch the delectable yabby for the camper's menu.
Outback – Waltzing Matilda Country Queensland’s Outback is known for its wide open spaces, friendly faces and wonderful hospitality but there is much more to discover – it’s a big country out there. Near the town of Winton, fossil discoveries are being made that were previously unknown to science in what is being termed a “fossil rush”. Join the Queensland Museum teams on a dig as volunteer and learn more about the area’s prehistoric roots. If you’re more into ballads than bones Winton is also the home of Australian bush poetry and the iconic ballad by Banjo Paterson “Waltzing Matilda”. Celebrate our airline at the Qantas Founders
Museum and explore our heritage at the Australian Stockman’s Hall Of Fame. The Central West allows you to talk in the footsteps of those who shaped the cultural heritage of our nation. The pastoral industry, great Australian innovations and the triumph of the human spirit over adversity are the threads that weave their way through Australian identity to this day. 17km from Winton, Bladensburg National Park offers spectacular views across vast grasslands as you stand on flat-topped mesas. You can also hide from the heat of the day under the shade of giant gum trees on the banks of the rivers that meander across the plains.

Port Douglas
Port Douglas – the place to get away to Pack your golf clubs and brightest kaftan and get ready to enjoy the resort town of Port Douglas in style. Port Douglas, north of Cairns is the closest mainland port to the Great Barrier Reef and only a short drive into the heart of the Wet Tropics rainforest at Daintree and Cape Tribulation. Feel the pace slow as you revitalise with lazy days – swim at beautiful Four Mile Beach, wander down the main street for boutique shopping with a tropical twist, dine with the birds at a wildlife park or dive into the Great Barrier Reef.
Lazy Lizard Motor Inn PORT DOUGLAS Tropical North Queensland
Reef & Rainforest • Sail to Low Isles, take a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef or join a live-aboard- boat between July and September to swim with Minke whales on the Ribbon Reefs. • Head to Mossman Gorge for a guided Dreamtime walk along private tracks and visit the cultural centre, filled with Indigenous artworks. Swim. Shop. Savour. • Dine in the twinkling rainforest while watching Indigenous dance performances or eat out somewhere new every night on Macrossan Street. • Get dirty on a mountain bike adventure along the infamous ‘Bump Track’ or a guided 4WD tour through the Daintree. Restaurants are many and varied with delicious interpretations of local produce and tastes from around the world, or relax with a counter meal at a typical Queenslander pub. While luxury is definitely a highlight of Port Douglas with superb resorts, elegant homes and apartments, backpackers and families are equally well catered for in the relaxed tropical atmosphere of Port.
Some of the Tropical North’s more exotic foods are grown in the Port Douglas region. They thrive and present sublime flavours for local ice cream makers. Sugar has been grown in this region since the late 1800s while newer crops include tea, cocoa and vanilla. Beef cattle and saltwater barramundi are farmed here and in demand around the country. Local seafood can be bought straight from the trawler. Each month on the full moon, signs go up around Port Douglas announcing the visit of a trawler selling its fresh catch of prawns, scallops, cuttlefish and assorted seafood to the public. Some of the world’s best table fish are found in this area, Barramundi in the rivers and Coral Trout from the Coral Sea.
The nearby Atherton Tablelands has a dairy industry supplying local milk, yoghurt and cheese. Coffee, nuts and assorted fruit and vegetable are also grown on the Tablelands ensuring chefs in the Port Douglas region have the best quality produce at hand to delight your palate.
Port Douglas is renowned for its restaurants – enjoy a seafood platter on the water’s edge as you watch the sunset over the mountains; tuck into a steak at a traditional Queenslander pub, indulge in a wicked dessert at a funky Macrossan Street restaurant or start the day with the perfect coffee in an intimate café – so much to choose from and all deliciously tempting!
