Black is back

9.

A twist on the old winter favourite, this year black gets reinvented with leather, studs and zips. In essence, it’s the colour of the season, so make sure you’re in the dark with your warm heart happily wrapped and plenty of dark accessories. 12.

In the 80’s it was all about beautiful jackets, for the boys. This season, the girls get to play along with some retro-styled vintage favourites that’s easy to soften with lace, or dramatised with heavy fabrics.

Have the perfect groom With more cosmetic companies looking to impress the not-so-fairer sex and the leathery faces of yesterday making way for fresh-faced gentlemen of tomorrow, the time has never been better to join the wave of men’s grooming. So, if your little caveman still looks around nervously while trying to choose between a balm and a lotion, or thinks Q10 is the next German luxury SUV, why don’t you introduce him to the harder side of cosmetics, because he’s worth it, too.

6 easy grooming steps step 1 wash face Always start with the basics. A good face wash rids your face of any dirt and grime that might’ve built up on your skin. To apply, wet your face, gently rub it in a circular motion and then rinse. step 2 apply toner If you have a slightly oily skin, tone up your complexion with a good toner. This won’t only remove all excess oil from your face, but will tighten all your pores to prevent blockages. To apply, shave or cleanse your face and then apply with a cotton wool pad, especially taking care on oily problem areas. step 3 moisturise This indispensable part of grooming hydrates and protects your skin against our harsh climate and scorching sun. Apply moisturiser at least once a day in the morning, and if needed, later when your face starts to feel dry and haggard. 8. Men Expert Hydra Sensitive Protecting Care Clicks - N$90-85 9. step 4 scrub face Once a week make sure you give your pores a deep and thorough clean with a good face scrub. This will take off all old skin and leave you with a smooth, polished complexion. Apply it to wet skin and gently rub it all over your face in circular motions. step 5 apply eye cream If you want to look after the really delicate area around your eyes and prevent dark circles, apply some eye cream with your fingertips in a gentle tapping motion to leave your skin looking energised. step 6 lip balm To keep your lips hydrated, refreshed and looking plump and soft, which equals kissable, apply a good quality lip balm throughout the day as needed. 12

Saving Tips

Their h t r o W old G n I t Weigh Most of us avoid talking or thinking too much about our own finances, only to be forced to face facts that we never seem to have enough of it. Consumer prices are on the rise and petrol prices are a constant dilemma, so most of us find ourselves squeezing every last penny out of our budget, only to find out that we are short of what we need by the end of the month. We borrow, beg and have sometimes, in a rage of frustration, considered devious plans to make ends meet. I have found myself readjusting my budget several times over and with some wit and a lot of selfdiscipline, have noted a couple of clever tricks to develop saving strategies that have proved to stretch my budget. So, before you go on your next shopping spree consider these pointers to help you with your urge to splurge. Preplanning is key Avoid rushing to the mall in a last minute attempt to grab everything you might need rather than focusing on items that are a true necessity. Take the time to write a list of what you need and only buy those items. Resist the temptation to sneak items into your cart that catch your eye and be a smart shopper that uses their shopping list. Be brand savvy Paying more for an item just because it’s branded doesn’t necessarily ensure higher product quality. Avoid buying items that don’t quite fit into your budget and think about substituting with a similar, but less expensive alternative. If possible, buy generic, no name brands, especially for staples such as flour, salt, etc. All hail them sales Certain everyday items, like groceries, toiletries and cosmetics are deemed to go on sale sooner or later. Use the opportunity to stock up on your favorite brands. Fashion trends have certain constants, including jeans, jackets and versatile blouses. Purchase your favorites during end-ofseason sales and keep them well guarded for the next season.

Don’t buy hungry As old as my great grandmother’s 100-year-old recipe, this tip has proved its worth. People tend to buy larger amounts and buy more things they don’t need. So, don’t leave home with an empty stomach and ensure you have the energy to hunt for bargains. Also, if you have a tendency to shop when you are a bit under the weather, avoid the unnecessary spending and rather phone a friend for a cup of coffee to lift your mood. Reward yourself The key to maintain any new habit is to reward yourself in due course for your well-mannered efforts. Cut on extravagance and save the money in your own private piggy bank and before long, you will be able to reward yourself with your own special purchase. Also, saving breeds saving. Once you’ve noted the quality of saving you’ll be motivated to continue on your conquest.

BETWEEN THE COVERS

book Review When an Afrikaans novel is translated and shortlisted for one of the most prestigious international crime writers’ achievement awards in the world, either the translator did the most extraordinary piece of work in the world, or the writer is one of the best crime writers in the world. Yes, although at first Thirteen Hours might feel like a Saffanised version of every other detective series, the protagonist, Detective Inspector Benny Griessel, takes you on a thrilling thirteen hour race as he faces all the political, exploitative and social obstacles in South Africa, while trying to do his job and get to the bottom of an ever more complex string of events that follows the murder of an American girl and the hunt for her friend, who really does not want to be found, by anyone. music REVIEW 2010, the year of POP. Katie Perry, Lady Gaga and now Ke$ha. This 23-year-old released her debut album Animal early this year and now, you can’t tune into any radio station world wide without hearing either her über-catchy first single Tik Tok, the follow up single Your Love is My Drug, or Blah Blah Blah, her way of getting back at men for the way male artists sing about women, bouncing happily over the airwaves. Sometimes called a degenerate Hannah Montana by serious grown-up newspapers and also hailing artists such as Beck, Madonna, Johnny Cash and the Beastie Boys amonst her influences, you can see how this rowdy artist first had to amass a huge online social media following before the big record execs actually found her. Something interesting: Apart from semi-breaking into Prince’s house to drop her demo off (and immediately getting kicked out), one of her songs is about her kinda “stalking” a guy called Steven. A new face of fashion. Will a dramatic change strengthen the pulse of the city? Well, the Ohlthaver & List Group of Companies and their subsidiary, Broll Namibia, plan to take the current gem that is Wernhil Park and give it a facelift like the heart of the city has never seen before. Since Wernhil Park first opened its doors to local and national retailers after the completion of its first phase of development, it has become a well-known landmark and fashion centre amongst local shoppers and those tourists here to roam the city of Windhoek. Now, only three years after its second phase, the upgrading and restoration of the mall has been completed, phase three is set to inject yet another fresh breath of life into downtown Windhoek. The third phase development at first sees the southern parking deck converted into 4 000m2 of prime retail space. This should be completed before the end of 2010, which promises an exciting new Christmas shopping adventure for the end of year rush. After this stage is complete, the building team will move over to start on a new retail and parking extension abo ve the existing taxi rank on the north side of Wernhil Park. This will extend the then already massive shopping centre by another 8 000 m2, or about the size of 6 average Windhoek townhouses! Luckily though, according to Wernhil Park’s management, it’s not only about size. Some of the most loved retailers, amongst them Edgars, Foshini, Truworths and Mr. Price, have indicated that they would love to either extend their current area size on the Wernhil Park tenant map, or, for the first time since the mall opened its doors, open their own doors to the 950 000 loyal Wernhil customers that visit the mall on a monthly basis. Ohlthaver & List Group of Companies and the City of Windhoek has one objective. To invest into Windhoek’s CBD and create a new wave of development starting with Wernhil Park, and eventually ending with a facelift for the entire Post Street Mall and a completely new, redesigned taxi rank to ease congestion at one of the city’s major transportation hubs. And what does it mean for us? Well, in exchange for a bit of patience, understanding and support during the greatest expansion we’ve seen in years, a new wonderful world of fashion, for the love of style.

honeymoon suite

A hidden, but not forgotten, jewel.. Midgard Country Estate has been out of the spotlight for a few years, but now, thanks to some renovations and a touch of first class service from its very dedicated staff, it’s ready to impress again. Nestled at the foot of the majestic Otjihave mountains about 85 kilometres east of Windhoek, Midgard Country Estate lies on an impressive 16 000 ha farm that the late Mr. Werner List aquired in 1936. The lodge became his exclusive sanctuary and passion. A place he could go to get away from the big city life. He developed the entire grounds of the lodge itself and today, apart from 46 luxury, air-conditioned rooms, there are two large swimming pools, a tennis court, outdoor chess, a kegel bowling alley, a gym and sauna, a car museum and a 400 seat amphitheater nestled amongst the most beautiful lush gardens and sprawling lawns you’ve ever seen. But, the estate doesn’t only cater for those wishing to escape and lounge around. It’s also home to one of the best conference venues in the country with a choice of four differently styled “rooms” equipped with state-of-the-art conferencing equipment.

And for the more adventurous? Take a lazy gamedrive, hit the trails with, or without a guide, or just hit the rock for some of the most breathtaking climbing routes close to Windhoek. So, next time you want to do something over a weekend or even just for a day, make the effort to travel the extra few kilometres and take the road less travelled to Midgard Country Estrate. Just follow the signs from Kapps Farm and spoil yourself. The only thing to keep in mind though, is that the road could get a bit testy on a normal sedan, so either make alternative arrangements or be on the safe side and travel in a car with high ground clearence. The only thing that remains unsaid, is a special thanks to the Midgard Country Estate and its staff. The time we spent there for the CHIC Winter Edition shoot was one of the most amazing experiences for our team.
