Christmas
RUSH
Yes, it’s that time of the year again! The scene is set. Christmas is around the corner and everyone’s getting ready for the all too familiar rush… or rather last-minute scamper for presents!
the year to pre-pack a dresser corner with little, obscure, colourful packages.
Some were wise enough to draw up a list for Santa a long time ago. Some weren’t.
Don’t worry. Here are four easy tips to calm your nerves through the run-up to the big day in December and hopefully, ease the strain of Christmas shopping:
They slowly start to wake up to the fact that pretty soon, they’ll have to draw up a detailed personality map of each member of they’re circle of friends and family, summon up the courage and hit the shops praying that there’s still something to match to each name on the list. If you fall into this group, be prepared for war. Your quarries will be armies of moms with screaming toddlers, teenagers armed with bulging wallets full of disposable income, scores of nervous men with no clue as to what they’re looking for (hint: If you got socks
last Christmas… guess what they’re getting this year?) and average, usually peaceful folk, that were just tooooo busy through
10
Scary thought, hey?
1. Start shopping now. Whether you put in an extra ten minutes every day or just cut back on relaxation time after work, every second you spend now, means hours of pure bliss later. And because retailers anticipate the yearly Christmas rush, chances are good that you’ll still find more than enough goodies on the shelves. 2. Don’t buy any presents. This is a dangerous move, but if you handle it in the correct way, you can possibly get away with it. For instance, when the big day dawns and you stand in a room full of puzzled faces, simply ramble off a pre-rehearsed speech about how you became disillusioned with the commercialization of Christmas and so, decided not to buy presents
this year. Finish with: “But I wouldn’t want to offend your beliefs, so I’ll gratefully accept your gifts!” 3. Hit the gym as of tomorrow and run at least five kilometers every day. When you feel that you can’t postpone your Christmas shopping any longer, barge your way through the hostile crowds, grab YOUR gift (if someone already has it, use your new-found strength to wrestle it from their clutches) and run…
In all good fairness, this is the jolliest time of year and everyone is looking forward to some downtime after the long year. Relax, think about how fortunate you are and enjoy every moment of peace and happiness on earth. And if you’re wondering what my shopping plans are… I’m off to the gym now! Merry Christmas! by Jac K o e s to

A big, bold,
colourful bowl It’s hot in the city and even hotter in the country. This summer’s fashion flavours is a fruit salad of purple, pink, orange and yellow, with green and blue taking the backseat in shades of olive, grey and turquoise. These happy hues are applied in silky, chiffon and similar flowing fairylike fabrics. Welcome also with open arms, the big return of the maxi dress and full, pumped up skirts that flatter round-bottomed figures, pumped up with netting and cut to make the most of this feminine fashion trend in the form of lantern hip dresses. Another must this season is a welltailored jacket, which is said to be huge on the catwalks for 2009 summer collections as well, so it will be well worth the investment. As for tops and toes, hats in the form of woven panamas and gladiator sandals are the accessories of choice this year, to be worn with hippie dresses, tailored

of summer! suits, and anything else that’s going on for that matter. Handbags are small, strapless and trendy, strapless and compact with only the bare essentials inside, so get rid of all the excess baggage. No more eyebrows to be raised at blue and purple mascara as per the 80’s. Even the eyelashes are colourful this year, with corals, yellows, purples and greens decoration lips, eyes and cheekbones in one big summer carnival spirit. Male fashion this season favours natural fabrics that breath. The style is bohemian and relaxed, with floral shirts and paisley designs making for all-round, bohemian island style attire. Shorts are fitted to the knee and luxurious fabrics like silk is also well back in fashion for the men as well as the ladies.

Back 2
school
blues Being a parent of three children I can attest to the chaos that precedes the first day of school. It seems that regardless of how early you do the shopping or how much planning you do beforehand, there’s always something that pops up at the last minute.
We’ve tried to make things easier for you by giving you a few tips to make the start of the 2009 school year a seamless one. Back to school can be a very stressful period for parents, we hope these suggestions will alleviate some of that stress: Making the first day easier Remind your child that she is not the only student who is a bit uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know that students are anxious and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible. Point out the positive aspects of starting school: It will be fun. Backpack safety Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back. Pack light. Organise the backpack to use all of its compartments. Pack heavier items closest to the centre of the back. The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of the child’s body weight. Always use both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles.
Develop good homework and study habits Create an environment that is conducive to doing homework. Youngsters need a permanent workspace in their bedroom or another part of the home that offers privacy. Set aside ample time for homework. Establish a household rule that the TV set stays off during homework time. Be available to answer questions and offer assistance, but never do a child’s homework for them. Take steps to help alleviate eye fatigue, neck fatigue and brain fatigue while studying. It may be helpful to close the books for a few minutes, stretch, and take a break periodically when it will not be too disruptive. If your child is struggling with a particular subject, and you aren’t able to help yourself, a tutor can be a good solution. Talk it over with your child’s teacher first. Bullying Bullying at school is a serious problem and can, in extreme cases, result in injury or even death. If you suspect that your child is being bullied... Reassure your child that you and the teacher will support him or her. Talk to the teacher or person in charge. Follow up on any action taken and remain involved in the decision making process. Check in often with your son or daughter about how things are going. Keep in mind children may be reluctant to talk due to fear of embarrassment or further harm. Sometimes problems with going back to school don’t go away on their own and may reflect a health problem. Talk to your family doctor or health professional about any problems – especially if they are severe or do not resolve on their own after the first few weeks back. Good luck to all and have an enlightening 2009 school year! by Jac K o e s to
