Concept The traditional lacquer industry, gradually disappear as the time past. With the production of industrial design point of view, combined with the use of different materials for the lacquer industry, seeking out new possibilities. We expect to create new styles and features by different application and interpretation. Nowadays, we are able to combine lacquer with other materials. Also we can change the bodies (matrixes) of lacquer. In this case, we attempt to show lacquer’s possibility and design modern lacquer base product. This project is an experiment -oriented design strategy, so the use of the display elements, will retain traces of construction, and use the most basic and simple decoration, let the attention of visitors focus on the product. The products of Plan Lacquer, are all use environmental-friendly natural materials, so are the materials of the exhibition. Moreover, the material we use to build the exhibition is fast assembly, then all structure of exhibition are recyclable.

11

reFINE In the learning of making lacquer ware, it strikes we that the core value of lacquer comes from its nature of handcraft. The key of lacquer’s rich tone of color is the repeated process of polishing and anointing. However, to emphasize the character of handcrafting, we expect that the meticulous, glossy feature with the raw, original texture are demonstrated simultaneously on this piece of work, aiming to illustrate the original quality of lacquer as well as the polished luster. Additionally, by allowing this piece of work finished “incompletely” at the manufacturing phase, and disclosing the simple process of industrialization, we hope to make industrial design friendlier for general public to appreciate.

LF vase Traditionally we use wood, ceramics and metal as body materials. Yet as the trends and eras shifted, so should the body materials. In this peace of lacquer work, we use fabric body as the base of the bodiless lacquer; consequently, the softness of fabric creates a contrast with the hardening caused by anointing. Through sawing the waterproof fabric body piece by piece, and anointing the bottom side, weight is successfully provided for the vase to stand.

Safe Convex

2011 Taiwan International Design Competition: Beneficence WINNER

24

Concept We often cannot see the traffic conditions clearly at crossroads, in alleys or the corners of hill roads. It is difficult to see cars that are coming across from us and those are passing horizontally. Although most of the roads have installed convex mirrors, people still cannot see the traffic conditions clearly because of blind spots and shades caused by other view. Therefore, I have designed Safe Convex, a detective device which can be installed on convex mirrors in order to avoid traffic accidents. Safe Convex has signals on both sides. When a car is coming from the left side, the light of the left will turn on; pedestrians will be notified that a car from left is reaching in short. Moreover, when cars are coming from both sides, both lights will be on and the mirror will spin in order to inform both drivers and pedestrians to slow down.

25

Problem & Solution In Taiwan, we have so many lanes in our city. Also, lots of cars shuttle at crossroads. It is really hard for us to see the car come across from the other alley. Our government was already set up a convex at the corner of the intersection. But, there are too many objects that reflected from that mirror. Also the sight of drivers may influence by rain, fog and inadequate light. In this case, drivers can’t see the real situation clearly. An accident may occur. In order to solve this problem, I use radar to sense the cars from the both side. The radar senses the frequency between cars’ move and distance. When cars coming, Safe Convex will response and show the signature to indicate drivers.

26

27

Features 1. The detective device not only sensors cars, it also has a recording function, which can be

3. The design of the 360 degrees axle in Safe Convex helps adjust the right angle base on each road’s need.

Demonstration A sensor is attached on the safe convex mirror; it sensors engines in cars, so two cars are getting close together, the red light for will turn on for the purpose of informing.

Please pass. No cars are coming across.

Hexa Light 2010 Graduation Project

30

Concept

Welcome to the nest. It’s not a bird’s nest. It’s a nest for hexes. And when I say hexas I mean lights. Made in order to remind the user of home, where the heart is, where one can truly relax. Like a home whose components are all plug-andplay, the frame acts as the gopher holes, and the hexagon-shaped lights like the gophers. But hanging from the ceiling. And each hole makes the bulb burn brighter. Slap those hexagons right in the hexagons. Each of the holes makes a different result. And as you can see, they’re all good! Find a fabulous larger room in your house or office or amazing building from when you serve fabulous foods.

31

Features Assemble Hexagonal shape into an arc. Hexa Light can separate into 3 parts- single Hexas, frame (main part) and light’s stand. In a shape of hexagonal prism, users can put hexas back easily and without error. Users can put hexas into different holes that they can adjust the light. On the other hand, they also can take hexas to anywhere they want and assemble hexas into different shapes. 32

Concept Communication should be unlimited! When the languages are different, could we communicate with each other? Deaf people use different language from us, so it’s difficult to communicate with them. Although gesticulation is a way to communicate, the development of sign language has been changed a lot that makes us become difficult to communicate with deaf people. Communication between normal people and deaf people is not as easy as we think anymore. They may try to express themselves in hand- written way, but we might lose their facial expression that makes our interaction eclipse. Nowadays, with our well-developed technology, the communication fence between different languages should be broken to make Deaf people easily communicate with people face to face, achieving different languages, same communication.

39

Problem & Solution Have you ever saw deaf people communication with each other? I have seen their communication full of different expressions on their face. If normal people want to talk with them, they only can use writing words as a communicative media. But, they may lose other expressions and their body language. In this case, I want to make a product, which can connect deaf people to the whole world.

Demonstration The communication between deaf and normal people present as above picture. Trans translate sign language into words and voices, and transform voice into words. Trans connects deaf and normal people.

Features Using gesture identification system, we can realize their language. According to this system, it can transform gestures into words and voice. Normal people can understand what they talk about. On the other hand, it also can translate voice into words that shows on the screen.

41

Features Speaker: For normal people that they can hear the gesture immediately. Charge port: Use USB to recharge.

3D Depth Sensors The Kinect sensor is a horizontal bar connected to a small base with a motorized pivot and is designed to be positioned lengthwise above or below the video display. The device features an "RGB camera, depth sensor and multi-array microphone running proprietary software", which provide full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition and voice recognition capabilities. Using Kinect to recognize American Sign Language. Pairing Microsoft's oft-hacked motion sensing camera with custom software that previously required colored gloves kitted with wrist-mounted, 3-axis accelerometers.

Compassler Compass and Ruler

44

Concept Compassler is a new stationary combined of ruler and compasses. Graduations on the ruler are also radius scales on the compasses so that user wouldn't have to worry about finding compasses. Compassler transforms the normal ruler by designing a hollow rail track. The hollow section is easy for user to see the content of the underneath paper. And the slide on the rail track with two holes is for different kind of pens to put in. Between the two holes is lock. User can fasten the lock and press the center button to draw a circle. The multi-functions of Compassler not only enhance the efficiency of learning but also create new usability for user.

45

46

47

Problem & Solution While we want to draw a circle, we need not only a compass (divider) but also a ruler. It really occupies the space for bringing both compass (divider) and ruler. If we forget bring a ruler, we even can’t draw an accurate circle. Therefore, I combined them into a product, Compasler that can use as a ruler but also can draw an accurate circle.

Concept Corner Box is a simple cardboard case design. To prevent hurting fingers from unloading a heavy cardboard case to the ground, we make a small design on the corner which provides a concave space for fingers-in by folding yellow-zone corner.

53

54

55

Problem & Solution How can people unload a heavy cardboard case to the ground without hurting fingers? Some might use feet to hold the heavy cardboard for a second before putting it down. Besides, how about pull one box out of a pile of cardboard cases if that one is in the middle? Corner Box is a simple cardboard case design. 1. Make the triangle dieline on the diagonal corner of each box. 2. Use fingers to manually fold the yellow-zone corner. 3. With a space for 2~3 fingers in.

56

Before Hurt user’s fingers before putting the cardboard case down. Use feet to hold it temporary.

After Yellow-zone corner for folding. Fold the corner easily.

Make triangle dieline on the diagonal corner of each box, then use fingers to manually fold the yellow-zone corner. The concave corner offers 3-fingers-in space. With redesigned corner, pulling one box in the middle out of a pile of cardboard cases is easily.

Waiting Under the Tree

58

Concept Numerous beautiful moments were born under the tree. Various touching stories were created at the bus stop. In the daytime, beautiful sunshine drops tree shadows on to the floor, people waiting at the bus stop is pleased for the gratifying moment. During the night, the bus stop luminesces fine lights, while buses drive through and carry people home. By refining the shape of a bus stop from a traditional vertical design to a curve one, it increases shelter for the people and make a graceful sculpture on the bustling streets. The bus stop roof is coated with leaf-shaped silver chloride, and its transparency changes with light intensity.

59

60

61

Features The surface of the bus stop roof glass is covered with a layer of Sodium Silver, which is sensitive to light and will change its transparency base on the surrounding brightness. It has the ability to absorb and rebound UV rays, so it can be view as a sunshade and protect people from sunburn. There are film solar panels on the branch parts, this system can generate more power with less illumination, and the power can be reserve for lighting system at night. The whole tree shimmers at night so people can find the bus stop easily. The trunk part becomes brighter as system senses there are people waiting at the bus stop, so it provides a safer waiting zone and make it easier for bus drivers to see if there are passengers waiting.

62

Technology

1. Agcl: Beautiful sunshine darkens silver chloride, thus drops tree shadows on to the floor and provides shelter for passengers.

2. Shadow: The branch and trunk parts are embedded with film solar panels, which collect daylight and furnish passengers with illumination at nights.

3. Sloar panel: Daylight is the energy source for night time lighting.

4. Lighting: This marks the bus stop location and make it easier for bud drivers to see if there are people waiting.

silver chloride: Photochromic lenses are lenses that darken on exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Once the UV is removed (for example by walking indoors), the lenses will gradually return to their clear state. Photochromic lenses may be made of glass, polycarbonate, or another plastic. There are both advantages and disadvantages to photochromic lenses. The main advantage is that they will darken into a sunglass tint when exposed to U.V. thus obviating the need to carry a separate pair of sunglasses for protection against harmful U.V. rays from the sun.The main disadvantage of photochromic lenses is they do not adjust immediately. It could take up to two minutes for the lenses to completely change from light to dark or vice versa. Another disadvantage for some users is that they will not darken when worn inside vehicles with glass that blocks U.V. light.

Problem & Solution 1. We can't use normal staple to be saddle stitched binding. 2. Use uStapler we can easily have a saddle stitched binding.

76

Concept The axis of a staple limits the reachable area to its body length, and it is impossible for existing staples to go further into the papers, even the saddle stapled style is impossible for them. uStapler moves the axis to the side, so it can slide on the paper edge to reach wherever you want to have a staple on. uStapler makes the working area of a staple form limited to infinite; hence the users can have unlimited creation with a uStapler in hand.

Horizon, the junction where heaven and earth meet, is the farthest place we can see with our eyes; being the boundary line between people, it is the nearest distance within our touch. Zhuangzi said: "nature lives with me in symbiosis, and everything is with me as a whole"; only by understanding the limits of heaven and earth can one coexist with nature in harmony. Only by understanding the boundary within the heart can designers cross over the boundary to broaden their horizon. Porcelain is more than Porcelain. Franz Award will march toward the world stage formally from 2011, and participants from various countries are expected to design porcelain products that fit the lifestyles of modern people with "horizon" as the theme to create a new vision for porcelain.
