“The idea of the series was if I could only ever shoot in one small space for the rest of my life how would I do it, I was trying to force myself to create something big out of something small.

The Secret Garden

Daniela Majic turns one small attic set into a garden of fairytale dreams CI: Can you tell us about yourself? DM: Hi, I’m Daniela Majic. I’m from Ontario Canada born and raised in a city called Hamilton. Iv’e been taking pictures pretty much my whole life but didn’t have that “aha” moment until I was nineteen. From there my love of fashion and fairytale stories began to flourish and I found myself trying to create props and clothing for my shoots and basing my photographs around more fantasy and whimsical themes. CI: Can you tell us about your latest series Secret Garden? DM: It’s always so hard to explain everything that this series means to me because it has so many personal emotions attached to it for me. I guess in a nutshell the series is treated like an art installation. I started with one backdrop and have been recreating it everytime I introduce a new character/concept into the series. I always planned that the space around the floral back drop would grow and become more and more infused with flowers. I create pretty much everything that goes into the shoots. The back drop the outfits, and sometimes the props too. I oollect silk and plastic flowers as much as I can and use them in the shots. The idea of the series was if I could only ever shoot in one small space for the rest of my life how would I do it. I was trying to force myself to create something big out of something small. Also, the series sole purpose is to help raise funds for charity. To do something that was bigger and not just for me. CI: In your blog you talk a lot about going through a creative block before you started Secret Garden, is this the emotional aspect

that you mentioned in your last answer? DM: Yes some of it for sure. I was working on the business side of my photography for about six months, and during that time I completely lost all of my inspiration and that yearning to create. It didn’t mean I couldn’t go out and shoot for clients and in a way I was still being creative. I just relate it to that feeling that I am 100% sure every artist feels, that feeling where you have lost all hope. Fear and doubt take centre stage and you think none of your ideas matter. That’s how I felt with my creative work. I have (like many people in this world) been through a lot of stress in the last few years dealing with severe anxiety and other personal things and it all just felt like too much. I like to keep a lot of those things private espcailly on social media. I felt like a break from my conceptual art was the only way that if I still had something artistic left inside of me then maybe it would eventually wake up. CI: It definetely did “wake up” because you dove right into Secret Garden, was the idea to do the series born out of that block? DM: The series was actually “born” months before. I just decided to put it on hold or let it simmer while I faced my block and worked on my business. I eventually started to think about the photography industry as a whole and ways I could change it or do something more. I knew in my head I had always had three goals. 1.Start a series and finish it no matter what 2. Do something more with my art and 3. Exhibit my work. Strangely going through that block allowed me to put those goals in front of my face and when I thought about raising donations for charity

INTERVIEW

through the series it all really began to make sense. Everything just kind of came together and it was like all my ideas came spinning back to me really quickly. It was great because it didn’t matter who liked or didn’t like the series all that mattered was I was doing it for more then just me now, I was doing it for children to give them opporotunities. CI: It’s really an amazing thing you are doing raising money for those less fortunate can you tell us more about that? DM: Of course, and thank you! On June 12th

I’ll be holding my first solo exhibit of The Secret Garden in my home town. During the exhibit there will be a donations box and raffle to win a print. All of the money raised will go to the charity Because I am a girl. You can also buy prints online and donate at my shop via my website. I really

“I really want to donate to more childrens charities. I really feel we learn a lot about ourselves through imagination” want to donate to more childrens charities. I really feel we learn a lot about ourselves through imagination as children. It really hurts my heart knowing that there are children out there who don’t get to explore their imagination. I’m also starting up something called “fairytales 4

Charity” which is a way other photographers can get involved but that’s currently in the works. CI: Where can one buy prints? DM: My print shop is www.storenvy.com/the majicshop. :)

INTERVIEW

CI: Can you walk us through what it’s like to Rouge Pony, and sometimes I use vintage props create a shoot/character and concept for like a plastic bee or a glass globe. Secret Garden? Do you have them all planned out? Do you draw your ideas in a sketch book? After I change the set and make the clothing and DM: I can definetely try, I have had pretty much props I send my pinterest mood board with hair every concept already in my head since the and make-up ideas to my team. I have had the series began. Some of the concepts change and plesaure of working with some really great hair evolve and others started as just a small idea and make-up artists on this project. and as time goes on the idea grows as my They always completely know exactly what I hunger to create bigger and bigger also grows. am thinking and bring a lot of their own creatI do have a bunch of sketches and I like to ive ideas to the shoot. I completely trust draw out my ideas (very roughly). I don’t alwathem. I have also worked with amazing models ys follow everything I draw, the sketches are who did their own make-up and hair for two of the just there to help give me a rough idea of shoots “The Queen Awakes” and “Garden Warrior” what I want to create. I’m really lucky to get to work with amazing people who understand the concept of I usually start with changing the backdrop. The the series. floral backdrop was actually made in 2012. I used a part of it for another shoot for my then I shoot everything in my small attic which is series Empyrean. We made the wooden wall in where the set remains. It is incredible to watch it 2011 with the help of my husband. Then I painted constantly change and I always surprise myself over it and staple gunned all the flowers indivwith how much I can actually do in such a small idually onto it. This year I finished adding all space. the flowers to the wall. For every new concept Behind the scenes and making of the garden I re-spray paint the backdrop and add flowers to it. Depending on what the concept is I might have to hang 50 wisteria flowers from the ceiling or add grass. I have done both. I also make the costumes for the shoots. What many people don’t know is I have actually been making props and clothing for my shoots since 2009/2010. I started off designing and asking my mother to help sew the outfits, then I’d make props like butterfly crowns. In 2012 I taught myself how to sew so I have been pretty much creating all wardrobe for my shoots even my fashion work. However I have collaborated with designers for Secret Garden like in “The Ice Queen” the fur collar is by UK designer

CI: Do you have a lot of concepts left to shoot? DM: At this point yes! I have 7 or 8 more massive concepts left to shoot. The set keeps growing and growing and in my mind the props and characters do too! CI:What are your goals for the series and what do you hope people take away from it? DM: Personally my own goal is to just finish what

I started. I want to make sure I keep going with the seris until the end. Also, to realize my dreams of helping others through charity and to show other artists that they can create anything even in a small space and to tell them to do something with their art for someone else.
