FALL INTO THE FANTASY WORLD OF

EMPYREAN

We chat with fashion & fine art photographer Daniela Majic about her latest series Empyrean, what sparked the idea, and how she creates these fantasy worlds.

CC: Tell us a little bit about yourself, and how you began the series Empyrean? DM: I am a twenty four year old fashion po- rtrait, and conceptual photographer from a city just outsite of Toronto, Canada. I have always loved the idea of combining fashion with fairytales, and it has always been my biggest goal to create images where I could merge those two genres together. Like Tim Walker and many other fashion/art photographers in the world, I feel that I am just following in their footsteps, and trying to create in my images, a world that is locked within my imagination. The idea for Empyrean was something that I wanted to explore for a very long time, but I felt the technical side of my skill and the artistic side just didn’t go hand

in hand until this passed spring when I began the series. I was feeling very un-creative and pretty much in a dark place in my life right after I finished photography college, and all I wanted to do was feel the passion and life that photography had given to me when I first picked up my camera. Empyrean was started so that I could create something wi- th colour and life, something that would make me happy to look at, even if no one else did. It was and still is a project that is there to make me feel happy and excited about art and photography again. Having spent two years learning and mastering my fashion ph- otographing skills I felt I was finally ready to take everything I learned from my fashion work and channeling that energy and creat-

ivity into somthing I felt really passionate about. For anyone who shoots fashion regularly will know and understand just how competitive and sometimes creative dream crushing the industry can be. Empyrean is really here to inspire young photographers like me, and to show them that even without money, and expensive gear or props and clothing you can still create images that have meaning. As I am a starving artist and I am young and practically unkown to the art/fashion world, but that doesn’t bring me down, and it never should. Empyrean gives me the hope and inspiration I am constantly seeking as a photographer. It doesn’t matter where your from or how much money you have or don’t have you can still create, you can still be an artist and make your imagination come to to life with your lens.

CC: What is “EMPYREAN”? What does it mean? What is Empyrean, and where do the ideas & concepts come from? DM: Empyrean means “heavenly”, or the hi- ghest part of heaven. Though I am not religious and the series has nothing to do with religion, I thought the sound of the word was really beautiful, and the thought of heaven is very other worldy. The entire series focuses on “otherworldly” female characters. Their beauty is almost god-like, therefore they are all from the world of Empyrean. My main goal with the series is to create strong, beautiful female characters as well as concepts. Each character has a back story, and each character is from a different part of Empyrean. Some are colourful and kind others are dark and evil. Some are not real, they are more like myths or metaphors. I am hoping to have short stories written to accompany each character. The ideas for these concepts arrive to me in many different ways. Some are hours of thinking and researching paintings, art, and photographs. Others are from books, fairytale stories, movies, really anything can inspire a character. From a colour, to a flower to a story I have read. To a deck of tarot cards.

CC: So what about photoshop tricks? are any of the images digitally enhanced? DM: The only photoshopping I use in the images are light enhancing, colour and airbrushing and thats it. Most of the cloning is kept to a minimal. Even with my fashion work I am not big on too much photoshop. I have nothing against it, I just don’t think it would make sense with my type of work. I have always been inspired by photographer Tim Walker and the fact that everything within the frame of his work is really there. Weather it’s coloured smoke or a giant feathered swan it is physically there infront of the camera when the image was shot. The locations in my images are really the locations that we were in when we photographed, the clothing the model is wearing, the floating butterflies, it’s all real. I think that the reality of the image is what keeps me inspired to create more, to create bigger and better.

CC: It has come to our attention that you actually create all of the outfits and props within the images, Tell us about this process and why you chose to do this? DM: It is really important to me to put a piece of myself into the work that I create. It’s not just enough for me to have a stylist with this series. Ever since I was a young girl my mother instilled the idea of art and creation into me and my sisters. I have been designing clothing since I was a little girl, (in which my mother would sew for me). I remember making crowns out of pipe cleaner with my mum and sisters. My mother is my inspiration, and the woman who has given me the gift of creation. She has been sewing since she was 12 years of age, and that is something I truly admire. So the idea to create the costuming, proping and head pieces myself just comes very naturally. I have created a slew of dresses and props for my fashion images so why wouldn’t I do the same with the series? It just makes sense. I spend a lot of time spray painting, gluing, sewing, taping drilling, if it’s a craft, Im probably in my back yard doing it.

CC: So what are your goals for Empyrean? How long do you plan on keeping the series going? DM: I am hoping to keep Empyrean going for as long as I can. I have so many ideas and charactrers I want to photograph and bring to life for the series. My main goal is to have some of the pieces printed large and featured in a gallery, with the behind the scenes photos and maybe even some of the props or costuming. I have only been in a few school galleries from my time in photography schoool, so I would really love the chance to have Empyrean exhibited. To have other be introduced to my imagination and my world would be an amazing experience. CC: We would love to interview you again in a few months to see how the series is progressing? DM: Sounds great! Thank you!
