Q&A
With
CC: Tell us A little bit about yourself? D: Born and Raised in Hong Kong, China, I have come to realize that my artistic medium is fashion. Once I found this perfect medium, everything else came naturally. Fashion is a per- fect contradiction for an engineer such as myself and this is shown in my desi- gns.
DYSTROPOLIS CC: How did you first realize that you wanted to be a designer? D: I seemed to have stumbled upon it. In my 4th year of engineering school, I designed my very first piece to wear to my graduation since absolutely nothing in stores caught my eyes. In hindsight, I should have realized my passion for designing at a young age as I always did fashion sketches back then. It is never too late to become who you want to be. I took four years off from engineering work and enrolled in fashion school. Here I am, and engineer by day, a fashion designer by night. Nothing is impossible!
My Brand , DYSTROPOLIS , is a look into the future- dystopian metropolis. DYSTROPOLIS is not post- apocalyptic; rather, think Brave New World, We, Nineteen Eighty-four and the likes. It is sophisticated in future tense with an undercurrent of chaos; it is Futursophistication. It is contemporary tailored clothing that compliments the body with a play on line and structures whilst electrified by sparks of darkness. It is an endless exploration in self expression.
“ “ItIt’s is never tootoo late late to never become who you want to become who you to be”
want to be”
CC:What inspires you? CC: Can you give us any fashion tips? D: “ Fashion is not something that exists D: “ In order to be irreplaceable one must in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the always be different” - Coco Chanel street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” - Coco Chanel Be different, be yourself and feel great in whatever you choose to wear!! Inspiration comes from everything around me. from nature, architecture, people, music, movies to world events. As an example, take my last collection “Apocalypse of Black Venom” presented at [ FAT ]. It is an imaginary tale of wildlife surviving the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. I felt deeply saddened by the tragedy, selfishness and carelessness that humans possess, and felt the need to express it in fashion.
CC: What are your hopes and goals for the near future and future? D: My hope is to be able to communicate my ideas to people through fashion. My immediate goal is to present an unforgettable show with my next collection “Pandora’s Pithos” at [ FAT ] Arts and Fashion Week 2012. This collection stems from a chain of personal events. It eventually evolves to become a commentary on the darker side of Humanity, where hope is a prisoner.
