Welcome to CODE www.codecan.org
If you can read and write, you can learn to do, and be, anything. That’s the idea behind CODE. CODE would like to welcome you as a new donor. You are part of a community of supporters who are committed to making a real and lasting change in the lives of thousands of children in developing countries. At CODE, we imagine a world where every child can read and write – where every young person can pursue their education and realize their full potential. With the generous support of donors like you, CODE builds literacy by providing schools and community libraries in developing countries with well-written books that children can relate to, and educators with the skills they need to bring these books to life for their students. Thank you for joining us on this journey, and helping us realize our vision one child, one school, one library, one book at a time.
How your donation is put to work: From its early days as a small overseas book donation program 55 years ago, CODE’s work has evolved into a comprehensive literacy initiative we call Reading CODE. It has two key elements: • Interesting well-written books for schools and community libraries, relevant to young readers, and written in languages the readers understand; • Meaningful engagement with these books through high quality teaching; CODE works with teachers, librarians, writers, illustrators, and publishers at the local community level to improve the literacy and learning skills of children and youth in schools from kindergarten to grade 12.
“When all Canadians get behind an idea we can make it happen. Literacy is about more than just reading and writing - it’s about accessing and participating in a world of information and dialogue. I’ve seen the significance of informed dialogue around the globe and I believe this is an issue, and CODE is an organization, to stand behind.” –Peter Mansbridge, Chair, CODE Ambassadors

A child goes to a shelf and picks out
a book that looks interesting: a book that mirrors their own life and experience; a book in their own language; a book with engaging illustrations that speak to them. This may not seem like an extraordinary act. But until the arrival of CODE in many smaller communities in Africa, the students had never seen children’s books like this before. They had only seen textbooks that they had to share with several other students. And in some cases, there were no books at all.
If you can read and write, you can learn to do, and be, anything. When Ekon learned to read, he gained a powerful tool. Reading is how he learned to repair bikes for his after-school job. He also helped his father read a manual to fix the village’s failing water pump. For over 50 years CODE has been helping people in developing countries learn to read and write. And for Ekon, bikes are just the beginning.
