Itisonethingtobe struggling with a problem:Itisquite anothertofeelnotonly utterlyalonewiththat problem,butalso

blamedandjudgedforhowyou aretryingtohandletheproblemI startedfeelingisolatedaboutsix monthsaftermychildrencame hometomeIttookmeawhileto noticethatthiswasindeedthe caseMaybebecauseIwasjustso busy.ButgraduallyIrealisedthat otherparentshadslideyeyeswhen talkingtomeTheydidn’tseemtoo keenonchattingattheschool gates, they just weren’t comfortableOneparentevensaid tomeonce,‘Don’tyoufeelbad takingotherpeople’schildren?’

It'snotonlydifficultiesinmaking andkeepingfriends,butalsojust the day-to-day interactions Nowadays,Iamfrequentlywalking myfivedogs.Wemakequitea spectacleVeryoften,peoplewill stopandchatandsmileTheywill petthedogsandsaythingslike ‘You’vegotyourhandsfullhaven’t you’?Notoncedidthishappenever withmy5childrenThen,people crossedtheroadtoavoidus. Walkingintoarestaurantmeant people huffed and sighed, anticipating a horrible rowdy bunch.(Theyweren’t.Theywere alwaysgreat,aslongasfoodkept arriving)Now,whenIlookback,I feeldesperatelysadfortheoldme. Theonewhothoughtthather friendswouldremainfriends

Theonewhoanticipatedexciting newfriendshipswithotherparents, playdatesandcosycoffeesMore andmorewewereontheside-lines. MoreandmoreIfoundmyselfonthe defensive Explaining why my childrenbehavedthewaytheydid, howIwastryingtohelpthem.But then,finally,IstoppedIcouldnotbe botheredtokeepjustifyingmyselfto everyoneconstantly.Inolongerfelt likeexplainingawaymychildren’s behaviourstoignorantparentswho onlywantedtoindulgeinabitof TopTrumpparentingorblameand judgementEven,tosomeextent, familyfellawayTheydidn’twantthe turmoilthatwentwiththebusyvisits andfull-ontantrumsIdidn’teven blamethemreally

Theirinternalworkingmodelis positive,theybelievetheyare good,loveable,worthyandsafe whoregularlyrepairsany relationshipfracture.This enablesthechildtodifferentiate betweenthemselvesandtheir behaviourTheybeginto internalisetheknowledgethat therelationshipwithparentis intactandunconditionalTheir internalworkingmodelis positive,theybelievetheyare good,loveable,worthyandsafe Childrenwithahistoryoftrauma andneglecthavealimited experienceofrelationshiprepairs andsadly,somehavenone! Manyhavebeenpunishedand shunnedandarethereforestuck inrelationshiprupturewiththeir primaryattachmentfigureThis constantstateofrelationship ruptureproducestoxicshame withinthechildTheyview themselvesasbad,disgusting, unlovableanddangerous!The feelingofself-disgustis overwhelming,andoftensoul

destroying.Thisunmet developmentalneedwill remainunmetwithoutregular relationshiprepairThiscanbe extremelydifficultformany parentsasbehaviours exhibitedbytheneurodiverse childareoftencontraryto theirownmoralcode Stealing,lying,swearing, violence,controlanddefiance tonameafew

Understandably,parentsand carersmayfallbackon ‘shaming’thechild Therapeuticparents depersonalisethese behavioursandrecognise themasamodeof communicationTheparent canthenoffergenuine relationshiprepairasthey consciouslyrespondtothis unmetdevelopmentalneed insteadofemotionally reactingtothepresenting behaviours.

Ineverexpectedtobeafull-timeparent again!Whenmydaughter’sson,Archie wasborn,mydaughterhadalready fallenintoalifewheredrugsandalcohol wererifeDespitemybesteffortsto

interveneandtotakecareofmygrandson,my daughterkeptmovingaroundanditbecame increasinglydifficulttokeepArchiesafe.Oneday, outoftheblue,SocialServicesrangmeandasked metotakeArchieimmediatelybecausehisliving conditionsweresounsafe.Iagreedstraightaway andleftmyjobinteachingArchiewasonemonth old

Myfirstprioritywasgettingallthethingsthat Archieneeded.Iwasgivenasecond-handbaby car-seatbySocialServicesIwassuddenlyona limitedincomeandhadtobeg,borrowandsteal whateverIcouldfromanybodyIwasveryluckyI havekindfriendsandneighbours,soIdidn’t actuallyhavetostealanything!Ididgetan allowanceafterafewweeks,butitwasmuch lowerthanmysalary.

IthoughtIwasjustagrandmotherofferingtolook aftermygrandson,butfromdayonethereseemed tobeawholenewraftofrulesandregulationsthat IhadnoideaaboutIwasnotonlyexpectedto knowabouttheserules,butalsoadheretothem withoutquestion!Thesocialworkersandhealth visitorswerenaturallyconcernedaboutArchie’s growthanddevelopment,aswasIEveryareaof mylifewasprobedandprodded.SuddenlyIwas toldIhadtotransportArchietoacontactcentre20 milesawaytoseemydaughterthreetimesaweek IwastoldIwasnolongerhisgrandmotherbuta fostercarer!I'veneverfostered,Ineveraskedtobe

mygrandsonandgivehimthebestcarewhilstbeing threatenedthatifIdidn'tmeetuptoexpectationshe wouldbetakenaway.Whatkindoflifeisthat?WhenI questionedallthiswiththesocialworkertheytoldmeI hadtofitintothenewwayofworkingandthatthatis thewaythingsaredoneIhadnotrainingontheeffects ofdrugsandalcoholonmylittlegrandson.Buttheydid sendmeonacourseaboutchilddevelopmentIhad raisedthreechildrenofmyownandhadworkedasa nurserynurseandteacher.Iwasgobsmacked.

Thelastyearhasbeenemotionallyfrighteningand drainingIhavefeltsoutterlyaloneattimesand completelybaffledbyasystemthatwantedmetostep inandhelp,andthenseemedtodoeverythingitcould tounderminemeormakemegiveupIhavehadthree differentsocialworkersandArchiehashadtwo.

Finally,Ididgotothefosterpanelandgotapprovedto applytothecourttobecomeArchie’s‘Special Guardian’.ThismeansthatIwillhave‘parental responsibility’andbeabletomakedecisionsfor Archie’sfuture

Thewholesorrysagahasbeenconfusing,sadand overwhelmingMyrelationshipwithmydaughterisat analltimelowThroughoutthewholeprocessIfeltlikeI hadnooneinmycorner,noonewhoactually understoodwhatIwasgoingthroughWhenIfoundThe NationalAssociationofTherapeuticParents,Iwenttoa ListeningCircleandmettwoothergrandparents,just likeme,buttheywereouttheotherside.Withouttheir helpandsupportIdon’tknowwhatIwouldhavedoneI nearlygaveupattimes,butwhenIlookatmydarling Archie,Ifeelitisallworthwhile.
