First-time conference visitors to Coffs Coast are often heard making comments of surprise. Surprise at the relaxing/tranquil seaside location of our quality resorts and nearby conference venues, the high frequency of air services to Coffs Harbour via Qantas, Brindabella and Virgin Blue airlines, the stunning Bonville Golf Resort, the fun and diverse team-building activities available on land, in and on the water and the refreshing subtropical climate. In Coffs Harbour and surrounding towns and villages, stylish cafés and restaurants offer a surprising range of dining temptations – from freshly caught seafood to global cuisines such as Japanese, Indian, Thai, Mexican, Italian and Vietnamese. People are also surprised at the beauty of Coffs Coast. The city has a striking backdrop of verdant subtropical rainforests along rolling hills and ridge tops. Further west, there’s the escarpment of World Heritage-listed Dorrigo National Park and beyond – the towering heights of the Great Dividing Range. Along the coast are headlands and uncrowded golden beaches on which to relax – swim, surf and unwind. Offshore are the blue Pacific and the Solitary Islands Marine Park with islands and rocky outcrops that dot the horizon as if guarding the coast – an idyllic playground for sailing, fishing and exploring the underwater world, before or after your conference. The combination of all these along with the professional advice and support of the team at Coffs Coast Conferences make Coffs Coast a surprisingly attractive coastal conference destination. We look forward to surprising you in the near future. From the team at Coffs Coast Conferences

Where’s Coffs Coast?

Why Coffs Coast?

Coffs Coast is a subtropical region centred around Coffs Harbour in northern NSW – about halfway between Sydney and Brisbane.

Coffs Coast has high frequency air access, a pleasant climate, great attractions and competitive, flexible conference packages.

With the vibrant city of Coffs Harbour as its major regional centre and the hub for tourism, commerce and industry, Coffs Coast also incorporates the main towns of Bellingen and Nambucca Heads.

Serviced by three airlines, it is easy to get to Coffs Coast from all Australian capitals. All venues, facilities and accommodations are just a short drive from the airport.

The region further includes the coastal towns and villages of Red Rock, Corindi, Woolgoolga, Emerald Beach, Sawtell, Urunga and Scotts Head, the rural towns of the Orara Valley, Bowraville and Macksville and the hinterland mountain town of Dorrigo further west. The unique character of each township is what attracts travellers looking to experience the diverse heritage and culture of Coffs Coast.

With its subtropical climate, Coffs Coast enjoys mild and pleasant weather, so you can plan outdoor events throughout most of the year.

Coffs Coast’s towns are surrounded by no fewer than 11 National Parks, 14 Nature Reserves, 37 State Forests, two Aboriginal areas, 84,000ha of World Heritage area and the spectacular 71,000ha Solitary Islands Marine Park. The scenic Waterwall Way winds its way up to a height of 1584m on the Great Dividing Range, with the rainforests in Dorrigo National Park at 700m above sea level only an hour’s drive from the coast.

Coffs Coast has a wide variety of venue and accommodation options to choose from – from golden beachfront to tranquil hinterland and convenient city locations – all at competitive rates. No longer just a beaches and bananas destination, Coffs Coast offers an incredibly wide selection of experiences for you and your delegates to enjoy, or to put an exciting itinerary together for delegates’ partners. From lush World Heritage-listed subtropical rainforests to the temperate subtropical waters of the Solitary Islands Marine Park, there are plenty of outdoor activities you could put on the agenda, such as bushwalking, four-wheel driving, sky-diving, scuba diving, whale watching, surfing, swimming, surf rafting or white water rafting. For some pre or post conference R&R, delegates can play a round of golf at one of a dozen golf courses, browse Coffs Coast’s local arts and crafts galleries and hinterland markets, do a spot of shopping, enjoy a coffee or meal at a cosmopolitan café, stroll along a foreshore or coastal boardwalk, or hire a bicycle or car and explore our charming towns and villages.

5

Venues With Variety Coffs Coast doesn’t rely on just one or two conference venues to secure your event. One of its main strengths is its diverse range of available venues – all within close proximity to the airport, city centre and coastline.

In many cases, you’ll even have some money left in your budget to add some great pre or post conference activities to really leave a lasting impression on your delegates!

You’ll find some venues in the Coffs Harbour CBD; others tucked away in a rural or bush setting; some very private and prestigious locations; and several that are right on the beach with on-site accommodation.

Coffs Coast is well placed to provide you and your delegates with a suitable place to retreat to at night. From luxury apartments to comfortable hotel rooms or cosy cabins and campgrounds, Coffs Coast can provide a full spectrum of accommodation options to meet your budget and requirements.

The venues are able to cater for almost any group size, from as few as six to as many as 6,000 delegates – the size of the very successful and award-winning 2007 Ulysses AGM held on Coffs Coast. With a variety of possible room configurations and combinations at some of these venues, as well as outdoor areas and marquees, Coffs Coast is able to host all kinds of events.

Affordable & Cost Competitive

Accommodation With Respite

In fact, you are spoilt for choice with Coffs Coast’s great range of accommodation providers. Because Coffs Coast is a major tourism destination, we have every possible type of accommodation on offer, including plenty of more upmarket ones such as tranquil hinterland retreats, classy beachfront resorts and urban self-contained apartments. Hotel and resort facilities include bars and restaurants, business centres, tennis courts, swimming pools, golf courses and much more.

Feedback we often hear from event organisers is that bringing conferences to Coffs turns out to be very cost effective and therefore a very good business decision – in addition to being much more ‘special’ than a run-of-the-mill capital city affair.

If you choose to have your group stay overnight at your conference venue, not only is that convenient for your delegates, but you may also be able to benefit from attractive package deals at the conference / accommodation venue.

Holding your conference or event on Coffs Coast means you’re getting true value for money.

But even if the conference and accommodation venues are separate, you’ll find that most of the hotels and resorts are within 10 minutes’ drive from most major conference venues, the airport and the city centre. Nothing is far on Coffs Coast – and there are no traffic jams! Cars or buses are available for hire to transport your delegates between venues.

For the same price tag you’ll often be presented with when holding a business event in a capital city, you’ll be able to fly your delegates to Coffs Coast, accommodate them nicely and present them with a professionally organised conference in a memorable location.

Airport Coffs Harbour Regional Airport is one of the largest and busiest regional airports in NSW with links to all of Australia’s metropolitan cities. The modern terminal handles approximately 350,000 passengers each year and new facilities are constantly being added to cater for expanding passenger flow. Three main carriers – Qantas, Virgin Blue and Brindabella Airlines – service Coffs Coast. They offer a range of daily flights to Sydney, Brisbane and Port Macquarie and a weekly direct service to Melbourne. The airport has the capacity to handle aircraft up to the size of a 240-seat Boeing 767. Travellers’ convenience is well catered for with 24-hour secure undercover parking, on-site car rental services, an ATM machine and a café in the passenger terminal, where food and beverages, snacks, souvenirs, newspapers and magazines are available. Commercial and general aviation facilities and aeroplane and helicopter charter companies are also available. Just minutes from the Coffs Harbour CBD, the Coffs Harbour Regional Airport provides quality service and convenience benefiting both travellers and the increasingly popular destination of Coffs Coast.

Climate With its subtropical climate, Coffs Coast enjoys great weather all year round. No matter what time of year you’re here – it’s nearly always perfect for being out and about exploring our beautiful beaches, headlands, parks and reserves before or after conference sessions. Coffs Coast is where the Great Dividing Range comes right down to meet the Pacific Ocean, leaving a small pocket of paradise lodged between the mountains and the sea, protected from extreme weather conditions. It’s generally mild and pleasant on Coffs Coast, no matter what the season. The average daytime temperature ranges from around 26 degrees in summer to around 18 degrees in winter. So outdoor delegate dinners, open-air events or water activities are a definite possibility for the conference or event you are planning.

Medical Services Coffs Harbour is the regional centre for health services. A wide range of health and wellbeing services and facilities are in one convenient location at the Coffs Harbour Health Campus, just off the Pacific Highway in Coffs Harbour South. Its main facility is the 226-bed Coffs Harbour Base Hospital, which provides emergency services as well as a wide range of other physical and mental health care and clinical support services. This public health care facility is complemented by Baringa Private Hospital, an 80-bed private medical, surgical, obstetric and rehabilitation facility in Coffs Harbour. There is also an after hours medical centre in Coffs Harbour. All these first-class facilities form the basis for the strongly developing health industry on Coffs Coast, which is serviced by an increasing number of specialists and general practitioners who are moving to our region.

Car Hire Nothing is far from each other on Coffs Coast, but if you like the convenience of having your own car to get around during your stay, you’ll find a variety of car rental companies with offices on Coffs Coast who are happy to assist you with your requirements. Six car rental companies operate from the Coffs Harbour Regional Airport: Avis, Budget, Coffs Harbour Rent-A-Car, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty.

Coach Hire Coach charter convenience is the key when you need to get a big group of delegates from A to B to C and back to A on time and in comfort. The good news is: Coffs Coast delivers with a choice of professional and reliable coach companies. From mini bus to maxi coach, Coffs Coast has got your transportation needs covered.

Taxis An extensive fleet of regular taxis and maxi taxis ply the streets of Coffs Coast as part of the Coffs District Taxi Cab Network. Taxi ranks can be found at the Coffs Harbour Regional Airport and various locations around the city and surrounding towns. A free taxi phone is available at the airport. Maxi taxis are able to seat up to 11 people and are a good, cost-effective way of transporting your delegates between venues. Within the Coffs Coast area, call 131 008 to book a taxi. If you are looking for transport in style, limousine services are also available in Coffs Harbour.

With its verdant hinterland, golden beaches and the blue Pacific, you’ll find there’s lots to do to refresh the body and spirit, while entertaining the mind. You won’t have to look too hard to find wonderful activities that your group will enjoy, either for pre or post conference touring, team-building events, ways to spend a day or an afternoon off or for partner programs. You’ll also find that here on Coffs Coast, many operators really think out of the square and will go out of their way to accommodate your group and cater to any particular needs or wishes.

The Great Outdoors For fun group activities or team building events, try one of the following outstanding outdoor experiences. Navigate hinterland valleys on a guided 4WD tour, go bushwalking in a National Park or try an army survival and communication skills exercise. If water sports are more appealing, paddle in unison in rubber rafts on the Pacific surf, down the exciting white water rapids of the Nymboida River, or in canoes along the quiet waterways of extensive river systems. Thrill-seekers will want to race in a mini grand prix on an international go-kart circuit, become close buddies on a scuba dive, or get a birds’ eye view of Coffs Coast either from a helicopter or during an exhilarating sky-dive. Consult the Incentives & Activities section further on in this publication for a full range of possibilities.

Golf There are eleven golf courses you can choose from on Coffs Coast. From 9-hole resort courses in Coffs Harbour to an 18-hole island course in Nambucca, there is sure to be a golf course close by that meets your needs. For a world-class experience, there’s the Bonville

10

Golf Resort, featuring a par 72 championship 18-hole golf course and other award-winning facilities. Nestled in a serene rainforest setting, Bonville has been voted Australia’s Most Beautiful Golf Course four years in a row.

Galleries With a large number of artists calling Coffs Coast home, we are lucky to see an increasing number of art galleries opening in our region. Consider a gallery when you’re looking for a unique venue for a special function or a personal visit during some free time, or plan a gallery tour as part of a partner program. Among the galleries you could put on the itinerary are: Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery, John Gordon Gallery and the Bunker Cartoon Gallery in Coffs Harbour, Cooinda Aboriginal Gallery in Sawtell, Nexus Community Gallery in Bellingen and Greenstone Gallery in Emerald Beach. All these galleries exhibit superb works and creations by local, regional and interstate artisans.

Escape to the Country - or the Sea On the escarpment of the Great Dividing Range, an hour’s drive away from the city, delegates can walk in the World Heritage rainforest of Dorrigo National Park, some 700 metres above sea level, and encounter fascinating birds and other wildlife. Travel a little further to Point Lookout in the New England National Park, and at an altitude of 1,563 metres, you’re up with the eagles in sub-alpine terrain, looking down across mountains and valleys. Spectacular views and a different perspective for sure! Offshore from Coffs Harbour is the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling, a sail or cruise around the islands – and between June and October spotting the mighty Humpback whales as, in ever increasing numbers, they travel by our coast on their journey to and from the Antarctic. Of course, our many beaches, warm water and subtropical climate are perfect for surfing – or learning to surf from professionals. Another great idea for a delegate outing is game fishing along the edge of the continental shelf.

Shopping Coffs Coast features an extensive range of shopping opportunities, from boutique specialty stores along some of our towns’ main streets to convenient shopping centres. After a revitalisation and refurbishment, Coffs Harbour’s City Centre offers a modern yet charming village-style shopping experience. There is a great variety and diversity of retail outlets, catering to lifestyle shoppers, business and service industries and the trendy young individual. The retail area includes Palms Shopping, a twostorey shopping centre with almost 50 specialty stores. The City Centre features boutique fashion stores, gift shops, jewellers, bookstores, music stores, bakeries and florists to cater for your every need and occasion. As Coffs Harbour’s Central Business District, the City Centre is also home to banks, real estate agents, solicitors and accountants. Taking advantage of our subtropical climate, outdoor cafés are plentiful in the City Centre, all offering great coffee and a variety of menus to choose from. For 10 days at the start of the October school holidays each year, the streets of the City Centre come alive with madness and mayhem as the area plays host to the Coffs Harbour International Buskers and Comedy Festival. With more than 120 specialty shops, department stores and supermarkets all under one roof, Park Beach Plaza dominates the regional retail landscape, with unlimited free parking. Across the highway is Homebase, a one-stop homewares, furniture and electronics complex. For a leisurely boutique shopping experience, try The Promenade in Coffs Harbour, First Avenue in Sawtell or Hyde Street in Bellingen. You’re sure to find that special gift or memento of your visit, while having a great time exploring some of Coffs Coast’s special shops.

• Group Bookings. We are able to organise group bookings on your behalf. This includes accommodation, team building, pre & postconference touring activities and local transport.

BOARDROOM Best when less than 25 participants.

HOLLOW SQUARE This one works well for small “brainstorming” sessions when there is no designated presenter or leader. Recommended for 24 people or less.

cLASSROOM Use classroom if the sessions run for a lengthy period of time – it is the most comfortable and the tables provide somewhere to place refreshments – notebooks, water, mints and the like.

CHEVRON OR HERRINGBONE CLASSROOM Leave plenty of space between rows to move in and out easily or eliminate the middle row altogether if space allows.

THEATRE Leave plenty of leg room between rows. Remember to increase the size and power of your data projector in big rooms.

U-SHAPE Keep your U-shape under 30 delegates – any more and you may begin to lose the interactive benefits of the set up.

CLUSTER STYLE Where 4-5 participants at round tables all face the same way (usually the front of the room). This is also known as Cabaret Style – a great set up for workgroups.

CIRCLE OF CHAIRS To ensure all participants can hear one another, keep your circle to a maximum of 20 seats.

Selecting your ideal meeting venue is one of the most critical and important tasks in the planning process and attempting to recall the many aspects of each venue can be difficult. The following Worksheet is provided as a guide and may assist in determining the most appropriate venue for your event. Simply rate each aspect on a scale of 1-5 (see scale below), skipping over areas of no relevance to the success of your event, then add up the total at the end. The list is not exhaustive and does not take into account costs or detailed reference to leisure facilities.

North Coast Event Hire

North Coast Event Hire was established in 1997 to service the rapidly growing conference and expo markets in the Coffs Harbour region with exhibition equipment and furniture hire.

• Marquees

Having undergone rapid growth, we are now one of the largest suppliers of exhibition equipment in regional NSW.

• Foodwarmers & Roasters

Specialising in ‘shell schemes’ for the conference and expo markets, we also provide staging, marquees and a range of exhibition furniture.

• Tables & Chairs • Tableware

• Bar Accessories • Dancefloors, Stages & PA Systems • Jukebox, Party Lights, Mirror Balls & Special Effects

The lower running costs associated with being based in Coffs Harbour makes North Coast Event Hire very price competitive. Our prices are generally only 75-80% of Gold Coast & Sydney prices. We pride ourselves on our reliability, professionalism and the quality of our work. Our staff will be happy to take the stress out of preparations for that special day and turn any venue into an elaborate setting - or, if you prefer, a casual one. We stock all reception needs, including tables, cutlery, seating, tablecloths, lighting, napkins, crockery, glassware and more. Barbecues and roaster ovens are also available along with disposable cutlery, crockery, glasses and tablecloths if required. For a more formal event, choose from our range of marquees which come with the options of floors, carpet, silk-lined ceilings, soft lighting and backdrops. We are also your ‘one-stop party shop’ if you require a dance floor, atmosphere creating special effects lighting, smoke machines or a digital jukebox (so you can be your own DJ). Our staff can recommend decorators, florists and chefs who can easily adapt to the setting of either marquee or open air. So if you are after some helpful advice, North Coast Event Hire can steer you in the right direction.

Bonville Golf Resort Map: C

ref: D3

The original brief given to Bonville’s course designer, Terry Watson, was to create a course which resembles Augusta National, the home of the US Masters. This was achieved with the creation of Bonville Golf Resort in 1992 - the striking resemblance between the two golfing destinations evident in the meandering waterways, grand movement in the tree-lined fairways, elevation from tee to green and of course beautiful gardens throughout.

• Par 72 Championship golf course

Voted ‘The most beautiful golf course in Australia’ four years in a row by The Golf Course Guide, the course is rated as one of the best resort courses in the country.

• Corporate golf specialists

• Driving range, putting green & practice fairway • Fully equipped male & female locker rooms featuring Japanese-style spas • On course food & beverage

The Par 72 championship course rises and dips through elegant strands of rainforest, each fairway isolated and private from the next. Its great appeal lies in the fact that it will stimulate and challenge golfers of every standard. The friendly, relaxed atmosphere of Bonville makes it particularly attractive for those guests who enjoy group activities and the company of friends. Guests are housed in thirty resort rooms overlooking the first fairway. Some have spa baths and others balconies from which guests can enjoy the bushland setting. Enquire about our group packages.

All Coffs Coast resorts offer superb in-house dining, serving local and international cuisine in relaxed and comfortable surroundings – some overlooking the ocean, others with views of sculptured gardens or resort pools. Many resorts are happy to cater to special requirements, for instance by offering barbecues and other al frescostyle meals for your group.

The Promenade

However, for those who prefer less defined arrangements, there are many other great options to choose from. Dining out offers your delegates and their partners the chance to get out and sample the variety presented by the many excellent Coffs Coast restaurants and cafés.

The Jetty Strip & Marina

Coffs Harbour Within Coffs Harbour’s CBD, you’ll find stylish sidewalk cafés and brasseries in our modern City Centre. With its palm trees, gazebos and open air dining, it is the ideal place for coffee with a colleague, a leisurely lunch or a catch-up over the catch of the day.

Halfway along Harbour Drive between the CBD and the Pacific Ocean is The Promenade. Here you will find two al fresco restaurants overlooking Coffs Creek and the estuary waters of the Solitary Islands Marine Park. With open decks, both are perfect for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

At the ocean end of Harbour Drive, known locally as the Jetty Strip, there is a wide range of cuisines on offer by about 15 different restaurants side by side. Choose from Thai, Japanese, Italian, Vietnamese, seafood and other Mod-Oz cuisine. Visit the ‘Strip’ for breakfast, lunch or dinner and watch the colourful Coffs Coast world pass by. Overlooking the Coffs Harbour International Marina with its fishing fleet and cruising yachts are more food options: a casual open air café, the local fishermen’s cooperative and a fine dining seafood restaurant.
