ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 1

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 2

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 1

Can the protagonist “Hamlet" in the play “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare be considered as a Shakespearean artificial fool?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 1

This essay is trying to explore whether the protagonist Hamlet in Shakespeare's play Hamlet can be classified as an archetypal Shakespearean artificial fool. I will analyse this notion by comparing and contrasting the characteristic of archetypal Shakespearean fools. Hamlet's foolish behavior serves a similar function to other Shakespearean artificial fools: providing not only comedic relief but also condemning the lies and weaknesses of other characters within the play. The essay will further evaluate the reasons to why Hamlet chooses to act like a mad fool. I believe that Hamlet- a young scholar who sees justice being rigged- has to resort to acting like a complete madman ( a ‘fool’) as an attempt to get his voice heard and uncover the truth and reveal Claudius, Polonius and other character’s true natures. Hamlet has imposed himself into the role of the new king's (Claudius) court jester to fill the void that the deceased old king's court jester Yorick left. By becoming a fool, Hamlet hopes to expose Claudius as an illegitimate king and establish the fact that he has committed treason. The play “Hamlet" by Shakespeare drew me in because of the complexity of the young scholar Hamlet, in which the character is portrayed as a “thinker" with extreme awareness of himself and his surrounding. He sees the immorality around him and the treachery of his uncle, more than any character within the play, yet struggles as he is almost powerless to make a change. His antic disposition masks his true intention which is to confirm the revelation made by the ghost of his father and to determine if he should seek vengeance. I also wanted to explore the new possibility of the character Hamlet as an archetypal fool since it isn't a common interpretation.

How is the female identity portrayed in the poems Lady Lazarus and Daddy by Sylvia Plath?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 1

Sylvia Plath was one of the most influential poets in the 20th century. Many of her poems reflected the patriarchal society she lived in, which was when men were still viewed to be superior to women. Plath illustrates the society where women and men were treated unequally, the general consensus being that women were inferior to men and therefore were restricted from the many things in life which on the other hand were permitted for men. In her poems, she portrays the unspeakable reality of the different social status of women to men, desperate to escape the world of male domination. Through historical references, specifically the Holocaust as well as the use of many stylistic features, such as violent metaphors and powerful imagery, contributes significantly in representing the issue regarding gender roles. She criticizes the patriarchal society and expresses objection against gender discrimination. Plath portrayed the disempowerment of women and the suffocation they had to endure within the male dominated world, desperate to break free from the restrictions and the set roles by society women had to play. The main purpose of this extended essay is to explore how the female identity is portrayed in two of the poems by Sylvia Plath, therefore, investigating the research question: How is the female identity portrayed in the poems Lady Lazarus and Daddy by Sylvia Plath?

What Role Does the Deconstruction of Personal Identity Play in Two Works – A Scanner Darkly and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep – by Philip K. Dick

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 1

The deconstruction of personal identity refers to the disintegration of a character’s selfhood and individuality. The constitutions of the character’s beliefs are put into question in which their identities are revealed to be false or have deviated to its true nature. This false identity is adopted as a means for the characters to integrate into their society. However, through the progression of the story, the characters will become self-aware and thus shed their assumed identities. This is the root of their troubles and their true identity must be realized in order for the story to be resolved. This appears to be at the core of Philip K. Dick’s stories and plays a major role to convey many of his philosophical ideas. This essay will analyse two of Dicks works: A Scanner Darkly and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Psychedelics are used in A Scanner Darkly, while a series of moral conflictions and paradigm shifts on the nature of sentience are utilized in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, to convey the disintegration of their protagonists’ identity. Each work will be assessed individually, where the role of the dissolution of the character’s identity will be determined and its purpose will be analysed. The conclusion will look to synthesize the arguments discussed in both works and come to definite evaluation of Dick’s work in general. The overall analyses of the two works reveal that each work uses the deconstruction of its character’s identity in varying manners to serve varying literary purposes. A Scanner Darkly uses the theme to humanize Arctor, and thus dramatizes his heroic efforts towards the end of the novel. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? uses the theme to allow the reader to experience Deckard’s conflictions and moral conundrums.

How are the themes of morality and human values underpinned by different character perspectives within ‘A Clock Orange’ by Anthony Burgess?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 1

Essentially what differentiates our 21st century society from Burgess’ dystopian world are the expected and accepted notions of principled behavior. In the world Burgess created devoid of ethics, we see his intentions through the perspectives of a variety of characters. The different characters I will be analyzing are Alex, Dim, Georgie, Pete and the government. As they offer a different motivation from their perspectives for their actions. This led me to creating the research question: “How are the themes of morality and human values underpinned by different character perspectives within ‘A Clock Orange’ by Anthony Burgess?” I have analyzed the novel ‘A Clockwork Orange’ as a primary source, particularly having explored the theme of violence through the characters and their actions. Examining character motivations and attitude towards violence and cruelty, stimulated through society’s moral principles and standards. The characters’ actions are considered to be a deviation from 1960’s British societal expectations, but within the novel, acts of brutality are treated as a social norm and is overlooked by authorities. I have explored society’s influence on the formation of character. I have showed how Alex, the protagonist, was affected by society in the different parts of the novel, and that society’s attitude was one of the main reasons for his violent behavior and malicious deeds. Secondary sources have also been research. Focusing on the life in British society during the 60s in comparison to Burgess’ fictional world. I have also explored similar works written about social and behavioral interventions, primarily focusing on the period in which the novel was set. I conclude that through Burgess’ reflections on the themes of freedom of choice, ultra-violence and moral interventions are explored through the development of the character’s motivations for ultraviolence.

To what extent do the characters of Emma Woodhouse, Jane Fairfax and Mr. Knightley influence a feminist reading of Jane Austen’s Emma?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 1

This essay address the question: To what extent do the characters of Emma Woodhouse, Jane Fairfax and Mr. Knightley influence a feminist reading of Jane Austen’s “Emma”? Specifically, this paper will analyze the possible mentions of feminism during the 18th century society in England. Furthermore, it is undertaken through the in-depth research about the literature feminist movement of the 18th century, England. Researches on the influence of Mary Wollstonecraft and the possible relationship between the Vindications of the Rights of Women and Jane Austen’s Emma will be analyzed. The sources evaluated are Kathryn Sutherland’s book “"Jane Austen: Social Realism and the Novel." Which analyzes the social commentary in a feminist view. These sources help to analyze each of the characters in Austen’s novel and further support whether or not the novel fights for women’s right or not. To conclude, the essay offers an unresolved question of what Austen’s intentions really were within writing her novel. It also emphasizes the role of Emma Woodhouse, a character written to defy society to which Austen created to show that a woman can be attractive and speak her opinions at the same time. The character of Jane Fairfax is an image of the stereotypical well-accomplished woman that was unhappy. The character of Mr. Knightley offers an equality between the two genders. These are all the aspects interpreted that could have made Austen’s Emma be interpreted as a 2016 definition of feminism. Although Austen’s intentions might not be exactly this, and there are no evidence that Austen had feminist intentions whilst writing the novel, it can still be interpreted as a feminist novel clearly because of the image of equality that Austen portrays through the characters of Mr. Knightley, Jane Fairfax and Emma Woodhouse.

How does Malala Yousafzai persuade the audience of the value of education in her first international speech at the United Nations in 2013 and in her 2014 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 3

This essay explores Malala’s two most recognized speeches her ‘United Nations speech 2013’ and her ‘Nobel Prize acceptance speech 2014.’ It focuses on examining how Malala is able to persuade and effectively communicate the value of education through a variety of persuasive techniques. The research questions is; How does Malala Yousafzai persuade the audience of the value of education in her first international speech at the United Nations in 2013 and in her 2014 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech? By studying Malala’s memoir ‘I Am Malala’, her speeches, interviews and substantial research I was able to learn about how Malala is able to be a successful activist for education because of the passion she gained when she was violated of her own rights. By analyzing both her speeches it is evident that her ‘United Nations speech 2013’ is more to raise awareness about children's rights to education. Malala’s ‘Nobel Prize acceptance speech 2014’ was effective in evoking change and action by adding urgency to her argument. Malala’s speeches were looked at stylistically in order to see which techniques Malala used in order to see how Malala effectively persuaded the audience to realize the importance that every child has access to quality education. The essay concludes that Malala has great impact on the audience especially because of her perspective which represents the youth in particular those that cannot access their right to education. Malala convinces world leaders that funding education should be prioritized on their agenda’s because knowledge is power. Ultimately to communicate her message ‘One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world7.” The ongoing nature of Malala’s work has evoked change. The sustainable development goals established in 2015 by the United Nations further reflects Malala’s educational advocacy, one of the goals is ‘quality education’.

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 1

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 3

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 3

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 3

How does Cormac McCarthy use tone and setting to illustrate the development and purpose of hope in The Road?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 1

This essay analyzes the development and purpose of hope in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. The significance of this area of analysis lays in the aspects that I strongly agree with; namely, the ascension of hope against all odds. The research question I have chosen is: How does Cormac McCarthy use tone and setting to illustrate the development and purpose of hope in The Road? The significance of analyzing tone and setting in The Road is to explore the juxtaposition of hope against the dark setting, in combination with the reoccurring tone of pessimism allows the idea of hope to grow more significant. Additionally, this aspect of hope placed in conjunction with pessimism is often overlooked by a majority of the texts critics. Therefore my essay covers an area infrequently explored area of the text. However, the repercussions with choosing a topic based on distinctiveness has greatly limited the amount of available resources. Thus I have primarily used the primary resource with further development/connection of my own ideas. One of the significant factors causing the deficiency in secondary resources is attributed to the texts young age; only published near a decade ago. The essay analyzes McCarthy’s use of various literary devices in order to establish the tone and setting, and ultimately the development of hope in The Road. In the conclusion of this essay, I have argued that the portrayal of humanitarian hope when juxtaposed with a backdrop of dark and pessimistic tone, results in its assimilation into something of more value and weight. Therefore, McCarthy’s portrayal of hope; presents the fundamental belief of human will to thrive and survive against all odds and the significance of existential harmony in order for sustainability.

What impact did the Stephen King novel “Carrie” have on the horror genre?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 2

This research essay explores the impact that Stephen King’s novel “Carrie” has had on the horror genre. It examines the different ways that the novel has changed horror throughout the years since it was first publication in 1974. Carrie herself is a misfit high school girl, being casted out by everyone; she took revenge on her classmates and turned prom night into a catastrophic night. This paper starts by discussing the two examples of original masterpieces of horror, Frankenstein and Dracula which were written in the nineteenth century. Horror was mostly portrayed with supernatural creatures like monsters, and vampires. My research then gradually shifts into King’s novel, which demonstrates the transition from gothic horror to modern horror. King creates a familiar character that is more familiar to modern audiences. It holds its energy to stun and exasperate, as Carrie finds out her telekinesis power, and goes on to unleash it, without a doubt to be most remarkable prom in literature. The book is powerful through how the character and story plot are developed. Carrie was one of the first books look to at high school for direction in making the best horror a generation had ever seen. King seems to highlight feminism using Carrie; she’s a really special antagonist that is transformed from a weakling to a fearful monster that horrifies everyone. King founded a new era of horror entirely, made his presence by taking sexuality, and women’s power.

How is the issue of Southern American racism in the 1930’s and 1950’s changed through Jean Louise’s perspective in Harper Lee’s novels To Kill A Mockingbird and Go Set A Watchman?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY English B

This essay provides a critical and in depth investigation of two famous novels by Harper Lee: To Kill a Mockingbird (1960) and Go Set a Watchman (2015). My research question is as follows; how is the of the issue of Southern American racism in the 1930’s and 1950’s changed through Jean Louise’s perspective in Harper Lee’s novels To Kill A Mockingbird and Go Set A Watchman? In order to answer this question, I have narrowed down my research into the following subtopics. Southern racism through Scout Finch’s lens, Southern American racism through Jean Louise’s lens, and effects of Southern American racism on Atticus Finch. The main sources of this investigation are Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird (1960) and Go Set a Watchman (2015). Throughout the extended essay, selected quotes from both novels have been presented to show the difference between the two. Quotes that are based on racism have been used to demonstrate how racism was vied at the time. The difference between the novels is the intensity of racial discrimination. In To Kill A Mockingbird, it can be seen that Southern American discrimination was crucial, but not everyone believed racism was right. However in Go Set A Watchman, Southern racism is shown in a more extreme light and most people, in fact, everyone but Jean Louise believed that black people should be treated differently from the whites. As Jean Scout matures, her perspective widens. From this, it can be concluded that Southern racism is shown as more extreme to Scout’s widened perspective.

How well does the character Holden Caulfield from D.J. Salinger's novel 'The Catcher in the Rye' represents teen issues in the modern day?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 2

The main purpose of this essay is to answer the question ‘How well does the character Holden Caulfield from J.D. Salinger's novel 'The Cather in the Rye' represents teen issues in the modern day?’ To do so, the issues the protagonist, Holden Caulfield, has experienced will be analyzed and compared to the common issues teenage in the modern day are experiencing. The information on the modern teenage issues is obtained from recent scientific research and statistics. The four main issues that have been investigated and evaluated are associated with schools, self-image, parents, friends, and siblings. Holden’s issues are identified by addressing the plot, quotes and relationship with other character from the novel. The causes and consequences regarding to each issues are then compare with the research and statistic obtained. Although some of the information gathered may not represent the whole population of the teenagers, it is reliable enough to represents the majority of modern teenagers. After the two pieces information have been compared, the conclusion is drawn regarding to what was and was not represented in the novel. The issue of school has been represented fairly accurate by Holden. Some issues such as selfimage, parents, and friends are represented in with accurate consequences. The main variable that alters the causes of these issues directly or indirectly is technological development both positively and negatively. The issue of siblings is not so well represented due to rare scenario – the loss of Holden’s brother. Nevertheless, all of the main issues reported by teenagers today appeared in the novel. Therefore, the result confirms that Holden Caulfield in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher In The Rye allows the reader to empathize with teenage issues of the 1950s which are still very relevant to today’s teenagers’ while introducing the idea of how technologies have influence these issues.

Hình ảnh ‘’Người lính’’ được miêu tả như thế nào trong Thơ cũ (Đầu thế kỉ 20 - 1930) và Thơ mới (1930 1975) của văn học Việt Nam.

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 2

2) Thơ mới a) Hình ảnh người lính vui tươi, dím dỏm.

To what extent is climate change impacting sustainability of agriculture in two contrasting countries in East Asia?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY Geography

The aim of this essay is to answer the research question “To what extent is climate change impacting sustainability of agriculture in two contrasting countries in East Asia?” Japan and Vietnam have been chosen as two contrasting countries because Japan is my home country and Vietnam is where I currently live. My hypothesis before the investigation is “Sustainability of agriculture in Vietnam is more affected by climate change than that of Japan is”. Agriculture is always vital for a country because it brings positive impacts on society, environment and economy. However, recent climate change is largely affecting agriculture. Since global population is growing, demand for agricultural crops is increasing rapidly. Therefore, agriculture needs to be sustainable in order to meet present demand without compromising future capability. My approach to this essay is to gather information or data that shows the importance of agriculture, impacts of climate change on sustainability and responses each country takes. The collected data is then analyzed through the comparison of similarities and differences between Japan and Vietnam. To conclude my investigation, I verify my hypothesis “Sustainability of agriculture in Vietnam is more affected by climate change than Japan is” was right. In answering my research question, I concluded that that climate change is significantly happening in both countries and affecting the agricultural sector. However, the scale of its impact on sustainability of agriculture is different depending on what climate type is, how much a country relies on agricultural sector and how much a country is relying on the agricultural sector, how much a country concerns and respond to the climate change. Therefore, in my investigation, the impacts of climate change on sustainability of agriculture in Vietnam are more serious.

ABSTRACT “To what extent have China and Vietnam addressed the development issues of gender inequality and poverty since 2000?” Around the globe, much attention has been paid to communicable diseases and child health while people focus less on global partnerships sustainability. Every nation’s aim was to accomplish the MDG’s they put in place whether in the short or long term. Vietnam and China have demonstrated their fifteenyear transformation can provide significant advancements to the country and possible a whole region. Nevertheless, it is vital to understand some goals would not be met by every country. This also applies to the two nations, Vietnam and China. For this paper, a comparison between Vietnam and China was made in term of the progress made between two MDGs which are poverty and gender inequality. The two MDGs are vital for the economic and social sustainability of the two countries and therefore vital for this study. Throughout the research, to an extent Vietnam has shown a better growth in terms of gender inequality and poverty since 2000. This is shown in their statistics, provided by the UNDP. China has also shown development by implementing innovative laws that controls the actions of their citizens, relating to the two issues. Both countries had similar approaches with the use of governmental assistance. However, the majority of nations have not fully carried out the MDGs, therefore the same committee of the United Nations developed a similar agenda towards sustainable development for the world. They were a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were targeted for the year 2030. This investigation was carried out using secondary resources, provided by the UNDP. This was a discursive essay based on the analysis of data provided.

How does development in South Korea and Vietnam compare since 1950?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY Geography

This essay examines the question: “How does development in South Korea and Vietnam compare since 1950?”The investigation begins with a brief introduction of both countries that give the reader insight into where the country is located and a general overview of their backgrounds. Geographical analysis of the two countries in 1950 was done, and factors which would have affected development levels over the years were explored. After taking all these factors into consideration, a final geographic analysis of both countries was done in order to come to a conclusion. Although both countries began the1950’s in similar conditions, with South Korea actually being poorer than Vietnam, development levels today are completely different. While it is true that South Korea managed to develop extremely rapidly in a short period of time, it is not recommendable for Vietnam to follow its example as seen in 1997, the South Korean economy was fundamentally flawed. Both countries endured extended periods of social and political unrest, mainly due to the effects of war which are still prevalent today. Not only that, but war had a great effect on the environment in both countries, especially Vietnam. After comparing and analyzing, it is determined that South Korea is more developed than Vietnam as the quality of life is concluded to be better.

ABSTRACT The main focus of this Extended Essay is on the Olympic Games and their impacts. The question it will try to address is the following: What were the Social, Economic and Environmental Impacts of Summer Olympic Games on Two Contrasting Host Cities? Olympic Games are a well-known sport event, where thousands of athletes from over 200 countries gather every 4 years to compete. As Olympics are one of the most watched and followed events in the world, they are very influential. The ambition of cities to host events of such a scale is also guided by the fact, that they can be used as development tools. The decision-making and planning of the Olympic Games is extremely important and can affect communities, the economy as well as the environment. Findings of this Extended Essay show a clear difference in impacts of Athens games of 2004 and London Olympics of 2012. The two events show contrasting examples of how planning and undertaken measures can impact not only the outcome of the games, but also futures of entire nations. Due to its economic instability, the Greek capital was already put in an unfavorable position to succeed. Despite a few long-lasting infrastructures (like the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport) built for the purpose of the Olympics the event didn’t have a positive impact on the country. It made a loss of 7 billion euros, which heavily contributed to Greece’s debt. On the other hand, the London games generally contributed well to society. Contrarily to Athens’ venues, the legacy of the venues proved to be acceptable. Moreover it was called the “greenest Olympics ever” and obtained numerous awards. The results also indicate that events of such a scale are not always good development tools and future bidding cities need to seriously evaluate the circumstances.

How has Uber affected the competitive position of taxi companies in Ho Chi Minh City?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY Business Management

The objective of this essay is to answer the research question “How has Uber affected the competitive position of taxi companies in Ho Chi Minh City?” This research question is investigated by applying business theory and business analytical tools to Uber’s external environment, and then analyzing for opportunities and threats Uber has, in order to explore the factors leading to its success in Ho Chi Minh City and the impacts it has made on taxi companies in the market. The tools used are SWOT analysis, PESTLE analysis, and motivational theories of Herzberg and Pink. Secondary sources were certainly required to use the business theory and the business analytical tools when investigating the research question as they were the main sources of information in this essay. Primary research was also done by using Uber, and primarily served to validate some of the secondary sources found, in addition to the experience gained. Through the findings gather from secondary research of Uber in Ho Chi Minh City, and the analysis of its external environment, this investigation shows that the ride-booking app of Uber is ultimately what has affected taxi companies. Uber having presence solely over the internet has made it hard for taxi companies in Ho Chi Minh City to compete with Uber that do not have the same advantages as Uber, but are slowly able to understand Uber and follow its footsteps by launching a similar ride-booking app. Evaluating the information researched, this extended essay concludes that Uber has affected the competitive position of taxi companies in Ho Chi Minh City, and made it compulsory for dominant taxi companies like Vinasun to launch a ride-booking app similar to Ubers, in order to maintain its market position in the taxi market and stay competitive.

How can Apple improve their CSR in China?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 3

The objective of this essay is to answer the research question “How can Apple improve on their CSR in China?” This question is answered by applying Business and Management theory to Apple's CSR and ethical issues. The essay analyzed on how Apple can improve on it. Most of the information came from secondary sources such as articles, reports, online documentaries. A PESTLE analysis and SWOT analysis has been used to give a more coherent evaluation. Based on this framework, it allowed me to evaluate the possible problems that contributed in damaging Apple CSR in China and suggest solutions strategies in which will improve their CSR based on what their rivals is doing. Research methods were secondary, with the help of theories and business tools from Paul Hoang Business Management 3rd Edition textbook. Other information such as company data, information on the market share in China, consumer trends, CSR activities, and strategies were also found using the help of online articles, newspapers and web pages. Conclusion: The research suggesting that Apple’s chance of improving their CSR in China could be highly improved based on the pressure from the external and internal stakeholders as well as government intervention. In addition, by looking into what their competitors are doing to becoming ethical toward the public, Apple will have a higher chance of applying it to their system. Even though, if Apple begins to become ethical to their workers in China, there will be a higher chance that it will increase labor cost which will reduce Apple’s revenue, they will be able to have a better image reputation which can boost their market share since consumer will more likely to use products that are produced ethically.

To what extent is POSCO Vietnam’s market penetration strategy effective in exporting to the US and Ethiopian markets?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY Business Management

Scope: The essay focuses on the long-term effects and viability of exports to the US and Ethiopian markets as POSCO Vietnam relies on a market penetration strategy. Therefore, the nature of market penetration strategy was analyzed, the opportunities and threats in the US and Ethiopian markets were identified, and effectiveness of a market penetration strategy in two markets was evaluated based on a trend chart and the identified cause of differences in the two markets — the degree of exposure to globalization. Both primary and secondary sources were applied to the issue. Information including company’s magnitude of exports to the US and Ethiopia were obtained after interviews with the marketing manager of POSCO. Other information — market penetration, suppliers and the vitality of steel industry, economic sector, contemporary issues, GDP growth rate, steel market size, and globalization index of the US and Ethiopia — were obtained through online articles, and governmental publications. Conclusion: The research findings suggest that the market penetration strategy is not suitable in such a saturated, dynamic, and globalized market as the US; innovation is essential. On the other hand, market penetration will remain effective for the self-sufficient market in Ethiopia as the country develops, and shifts its economic focus to the manufacturing sector. Like any infant industry/enterprise, the company knows that there is a lag between original outlay and break-even point. If they perceive the outlay as a longterm investment, they stand to recoup many times over. However, as Ethiopia becomes more globalized, POSCO will need to innovate and investigate new strategies. In order to guarantee the firm’s long term vitality, continuous evaluation is required in both markets in any case.

How did Franco's policy towards the Spanish working class evolve in the post-World War II period and how successful was it?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY History

Francisco Franco was one of the most influential and revolutionary leaders in Spain. Franco tried to focus on helping the “working class”. In Spain there are many views on how Francisco Franco’s ruled over Spain. Francisco Franco rose from helping the Nationalist party to take over Spain. The Spanish civil war started in 1936 and ended in 1939. After the Civil War in 1939, Franco was proclaimed to be Generalissimo. During the civil war the majority of Spaniards were either with the nationalist party or with the communist. A great majority of the working class were with the communist party. This did not stop Franco from helping them even though they did not support him. Many people do not understand why Franco did what he did during his leadership. This has led me to discuss the question of: How did Franco's policy towards the Spanish working class evolve in the post-World War II period and how successful was it? This investigation will explore the evolution of the policies created by Francisco Franco and the level of success these policies had in improving Spain. Franco was able to portray himself as the protector and safeguarded his interest and protected Spain To be able to investigate this, the investigation will look a two different periods of time. Those periods of time are Post-World War, 1945 to 1960 and the second period is from 1960 to 1975. This division of the time was considered effective because it’s divided into two 15 year periods. This investigation will look at Franco’s success through his policies of censorship, economic decisions, political prisoners and land distribution.

What impact did the. collapse of the Soviet Union have on the balance of military powers of NATO from the Cold War to 2004?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY History

The collapse of the Soviet Union was one of the most significant events in recent history. Whenever a subject about the Soviet Union is brought, people will inevitably be reminded of the downfall, or the Cold War between the state and NATO, another treaty composed of one superpower, the US, and primarily Western European countries. Speaking of which, Cold War was a post – WWII period in which there was a military tension between Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc in order to demonstrate military and ideological superiority. The essay will center on analyzing the military rivalry between the two organizations and, more importantly, the impact of the collapse of Soviet Union on NATO as a whole. The focus question of the essay is “What impact did the collapse of the Soviet Union have on the balance of military power of NATO?” In order to answer this question, several factors have to be addressed. Firstly, the essay investigates Russia’s military conditions before, during and after the confrontation with NATO. Secondly, the essay details about NATO’s force against Russia and how the two sides react to each other during the Cold War. Finally, there will be examinations of what happens to NATO after the Cold War ended with Russia’s defeat. The conclusion of the essay is that the military dominance of NATO increased after the fall of the Soviet Union and several post-Warsaw countries joined the organization to boost its influence further.

What was the significance of the Argentinian Rock Culture in resistance to the Military dictatorship of 1976-1983?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 3

The research question I chose to investigate is ‘What was the significance of the Argentinian Rock Culture in resistance to the Military dictatorship of 1976-1983?’. Throughout the investigation I looked at different important events that affected the Argentine rock culture such as the Luna Park concert and the Malvinas/Falklands war, I looked at different laws introduced that also had direct links such as The Formulas, Broadcasting Law and the Ban of English Music. I analyzed 2 different rock songs from different times in the dictatorship (Alice in the land and The Dinosaurs) and finally I looked at how different leaders restricted the Argentine rock culture. The conclusion I had reached is that the significance of the Argentinian Rock Culture in resistance to the military dictatorship was that it was used by young people to express their feelings as everything was censored and freedom of speech was restricted. I concluded that at the time it was the counter to the censorship laws and people could use it as a form of peaceful resistance, communication and expression.

How do different ratios of NPK fertilizers affect the growth of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica)?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY Biology

Food safety has been a serious problem in Vietnam, thus, families are starting to grow their own vegetables at home, but the vegetables grown are not enough to feed the entire family. One of the main reasons is soil deficiency. In order to cope with soil deficiency, fertilizers must be used. This extended essay aims to explore the research question “How do different ratios of NPK fertilizers affect the growth of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica)?” and to also find the most effective fertilizer that will maximize the growth of water spinach. The growth of the plants in this experiment was measured by the height of the plants and the number of leaves on them. Six NPK fertilizers of different ratios were investigated. There was also one control plant, to which no fertilizer was given. The seven pots of water spinach were grown for 15 days, each pot given a different ratio of NPK fertilizers. The fertilizers were applied on Day 1 and Day 8. At the end of the 15 days, the height of the plants and number of leaves were measured. Conclusively, most of the fertilizers did not increase the plant's’ heights, but did increase the amount of leaves produced. The fertilizer 17-9-17-12SiO2+TE was shown to be the most effective ratio in terms of plant height and leaves produced as both its height and leaves were higher than the control plant. This knowledge is useful for families that are searching for fertilizers to use for their vegetable. Also, the effects of fertilizers discussed will help families understand that not all fertilizers can be used for a certain plant.

Which color of light helps cloned species grow fastest?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY Biology

I’m interested in ecology, biotechnology so I decided to investigate how to apply these areas of science to Vietnamese agriculture, the biggest economics source of my country. Vietnam lies in a humid subtropical climate region, where the latitude varies across the country. This brings disadvantages to Vietnamese agricultures as there usually is bad climate which leads to natural disaster and diseases. Hence, these factors cause desert formation and crop damaging. Instead of spending months replanting plants, poisoning soil with the overuses of chemical fertilizer to save the agriculture, there is a solution: In nature, there is variety in every kind of plant species. So when natural disaster or diseases happen some population of the species will die and those with better-adapted characteristics will survive. Over time, evolution allows the population to major in these characteristics and becomes stronger. However, evolution needs time while cloning can convey these good traits onto the next generation faster, creating new populations that can resist well toward diseases, natural disaster. While cloning helps Vietnamese agriculture improves its crop quality to deal with diseases and natural disaster; in agro-technology, the photoresponse allows farmers to create illumination with different colored-light to control plant growth and development. With suitable color, absorbed light can regulate flowering time, speed up the germination process and growth rate, etc. This light method allows farmers to ensure their crop growth rate despite the bad climate and natural disaster. Therefore, this exploration serves mainly to find answer to the research question “Which color of light would help the cloned plant species grow fastest, thus to test the uses of cloning in agriculture. The plant species used for the experiment is Ruellia simplex. Summary of the result clarifies blue light helps the cloned plant species grow fastest, thus cloning using propagation by cutting-dipping is effective, accurate.

How do male and female individuals from the age range of 9 to 13 react to the consumption of increasing masses of sucrose, C12H22O11 specifically from 0 to 4 grams (g), measured through their cognitive ability, particularly their visual and auditory reaction times in milliseconds (ms) through online cognitive tests?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY Biology

The investigation focused on the measurement of reaction times of individuals through cognitive tests in response to the effect of the amount of sucrose consumed. The research question is “How do male and female individuals from the age range of 9 to 13 react to the consumption of increasing masses of sucrose, C12H22O11 specifically from 0 to 4 grams (g), measured through their cognitive ability, particularly their visual and auditory reaction times in milliseconds (ms) through online cognitive tests? This investigation could be comparable to the learning response of children to the amount of sugar they consume, which could also be comparable to hyperactivity. Individuals aged 9 to 13 were asked to consume 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 grams of sugar in 5 mornings without consuming anything for that day until after the taking the cognitive tests and recording the results for three trials. These results were averaged and compared to another set of results from a controlled group whom had the same procedure but did not consume any sugar for the same amount of days. Individuals who consumed sugar showed the greatest general decrease in average reaction times for the auditory test with a correlation coefficient value of r = -0.94 while individuals who did not consume sugar showed the greatest general increase in average reaction times for the visual test with r = 0.25. Individuals who consumed sugar showed a general decrease in reaction times in both auditory and visual tests while individuals who did not consume sugar only showed a general decrease in reaction times in the auditory test. In conclusion, a simple relationship between the amount of sugar consumed and their cognitive abilities could not be easily established as multiple factors must have been taken into consideration.

How does the pathing of light change through different atmosphere due to differing temperature?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 4

This extended essay is an investigation to determine the relationship between temperature and the angle of refraction due to the refractive index, the research question is How does the pathing of light change through different atmosphere due to differing temperature? In order to see the relationship between the two, an experiment was performed. The light source of this experiment, a 4000mw (milli-watts), 445nm laser is directed towards a heat tolerant glass container, and within the container is nothing, but atmospheric air. By utilizing the Bunsen burner at the source of heat to heat up the air within the container, there will be a change in the refractive index. This change could be found by measuring the angle of incidence, and the angle of refraction. With the aid of the computer program and cameras, the data of temperature and the displacement of the laser beam are simultaneously acquired. A total of four trials were conducted to increase the reliability of the result by reducing random error. This experiment was inspired by the concept of a refractometer which uses liquids, instead of gases, and is slightly modified to determine how the refractive index of gas can change based on temperature. The results of this experiment shows that there is an inverse relationship between the refractive index and temperature, such as that when temperature increases, the refractive index decreases. Although there are no theoretical values of gases to compare my results to, there are theoretical values of liquid with the same result, where when temperature increase, the refractive index decreases.

How does weight of a ship affects the oscillations that a ship creates?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY Physics

This essay explores the relationship between weight of a ship and rapid oscillations that ships create. Oscillations in water environments mean ships tilting left to right. Oscillation is caused by various circumstances that are decided by the weight of the ships. Therefore, this essay answers ‘How does weight of a ship affects the oscillations that a ship creates? The essay finds relationships between weight of ships and oscillations by conducting a mini scale ship experiment via adding weights on a model ship. The scope of this essay will contain the background information on simple harmonic motion, underdamping, center of mass and frequency to add a new level of explanation on oscillations. The investigations will be in two parts; how weight affects factors and how factors affect oscillation which directly relate to stability of ships. To find the factors, initial controlled variable was the angle set before the release of ship. The angle was 45 , side of the ship touching the surface of the water then as ship is released from the hand. This is to give an artificial disturbing force(wave) to see how it influence on oscillations. Disturbing force is what make ships to experience shaking in water environments. The conclusions drawn from this investigation is, heavier ships tend to experience more damping, as it oscillates less because of center of mass is located at lower part of a ship. Heavier ships have a lower displacement for each oscillation, hence has higher frequency, while lighter ships are vice versa. This essay further discusses the real life consequences of ship’s oscillations such as ‘sea sickness’, ‘off-track’ and ‘sinking’. However, the experiment didn’t consider the natural phenomenon in the harsh underwater environment. Though, it is a firm true that the lighter ships increase probability for passengers to experience real life consequences.

Investigating the relationship of surface area and friction between a rubberized block, grass plane system.

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY Physics

The standard model of friction that has been taught refers to the basics with an equation expressed, . Knowing that the model follows solid friction theories, surface area and friction is observed to be independent. Yet, people are intrigued in thinking that either will influence the other as friction is formed from the contact between surfaces. Additionally, research showed that there were exceptions, which seemed fascinating leading to the essay that attempts to investigate the relationship between surface area and the respective friction force. Previously introduced, the term macroscale and microscale is essential, depending on which view the result is completely different. The independent relationship between surface area and friction force results from the view in the macroscale, where minute particles in surfaces are disregarded and is just summed up to a flat surface, unless the surface has definite indentations. Yet, this is not followed throughout the study referred to friction force microscopy (FFM). This typical study will be the focus of the experiment as it provides outcomes that disagree with the relationship. The setup for FFM that retrieves such data is difficult to achieve, and so is its calibration. Thus, within the experimental setup, artificial grass is used as a surface for their sturdy grass blades to deliver the dimples in surfaces, allowing the experiment to mimic the outcomes of FFM. There will be five different blocks with rubberized bottoms to allow the findings of the experiment to become applicable to real life situations, and the proposed example in this essay is the contact of shoes and soccer fields. Overall, the investigation has provided results where views in the microscale is an exception to the theory, and unique characteristics of rubber gives it a directly proportional relationship between surface area and friction force.

The ramp inclinations technology, although is a piece of old technology that is used in the London Underground’s Northern line. Analyzing the effectiveness of this technology by comparing the time taken for one trip tracks with inclination will take, and tracks without inclination will take give a rough outline on which technology is more beneficial for different people. Doing this research will help the train track planner decide on which technology he should choose in a mathematical way, as there are advantages and setbacks. Because my dream as an engineer started with train tracks, it will be not only a meaningful way to initiate fulfilling the dream, but also look at the significance of mathematics in real life by looking at how it is used to solve a problem. This essay has taken a mathematical approach by first deriving equations of motion that is essential to this essay, and using these equations and figures of train tracks this essay attempts to figure out the time it takes for each trip with and without the inclination technology. Additionally, adding friction into the equation was also done to make the calculations more realistic. Through this, the reason of usage of ramp inclination technology can be apparent as instead of time efficiency of trips between the 2 stations, although it takes more time, by converting gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy, it helps the train accelerate using natural forces (in this case gravity). Thus, the ramp inclination technology is not necessarily most efficient, but can help reduce force used by train to travel between Euston station and King’s Cross station.

To what extent is it possible for a musician in the commercially-focused music industry of the 21st century to create authentic music?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY Music

It has always been one of my joys in life, to define my musical taste by finding music that truly appealed to me. However, a quality that I sought to find but was quite unable to do so with mainstream music, is authenticity. I did find, however, music that was free and not within the music industry, that I considered authentic. Due to the lack of authentic music within mainstream music, I questioned whether it was even possible to create authentic music from within the music industry. In order to investigate this, I analyzed John Potash’s book, Drugs as Weapons Against Us, studies that have been conducted on the human brain and the effect of playing music in repetition on it and looked into examples of actual musicians in the music industry and the conditions they are set to make music in, in order to judge whether it is possible to create authentic music in the music industry. Ultimately, I concluded that it was impossible to create authentic music in the music industry because of all of the conclusive evidence of how the music industry suppresses and impedes the artistic expression, artistic integrity and freedom of expression in music that is needed to create authentic music. As was argued in the essay, the music industry restricts the creative freedom, the artistic expression and the artistic integrity that are such crucial elements in the creation of authentic music, through three main factors: record labels pressuring musicians to produce music that will turn a profit, authority figures suppressing the freedom of expression in music and musicians prioritizing money and their musical careers over wanting to create authentic music.

As argued by W. Moelwyn Merchant: is Shakespeare a progressive tradition, or are modern contemporary adaptations betraying Shakespeare’s original intentions?

ABSTRACT

CATEGORY 6

Is Shakespeare a progressive tradition, or are modern contemporary adaptations betraying Shakespeare's original intentions? I will introduce Shakespeare and his influence on the world, before talking about my experience with a Cantonese adaptation of Macbeth as well as Peter Brook’s production of Midsummer Night’s Dream. I will then introduce the article by W. Moelwyn Merchant to argue what defined Shakespeare’s style, before examining the conventions that make the style malleable and what separates and overlaps between Shakespeare and Elizabethan theater. I will then argue the plausibility of creating a true Shakespearean performance at all, leading to a conclusion that it would be impossible purely due to the difference in context, culture and style of acting between now and then. I will then brush on culture and how it affected Shakespeare’s plays and how it does for modern adaptations. I then highlight the opposite end of the spectrum of adaptations that have gone too far such as The Donkey Show and As You like It. I then argue that what separated Shakespeare from his contemporaries at the time was his “mastery and development of the English language as well as his immaculately constructed stories,” before relating it to the ‘Ship of Theseus’ and to conclude: as long as the core elements of Shakespeare are still in place, then why not update the rest of the ‘ship’ to keep interest alive and current, yet retain what makes Shakespeare special.
