Spirit Week Spirit Week was an extremely successful opportunity to energize our school community and show ‘Rhino Pride’ through daily themes and entertaining activities. Congratulations to our Student Representative Council (SRC) and House Captains for organizing such crowd-pleasing events as capture the flag (House Day) and our own special version of a photo booth (on Twin Day), your organization and action throughout the week made a huge impact!

The members of ‘The Five’ and the newly-elected Homeroom Representatives of this school-year, collaborated in the continuation of the annual ISHCMC tradition - ‘Spirit Week’ - in order to welcome the new school-year with the most positive attitude. Each day of this week was specifically themed from Monday’s ‘Lazy Day’ to Friday’s ‘Hippie Day’ all of which were also filled with exciting and enjoyable student-teacher activities such as the ‘Student-Teacher Volleyball Match’ which took place on ‘Sports Day’, as well as delicious and rewarding food-sales. The first-time-ever ‘Rhino Rave’ took place on the Friday evening of that week too this ended the entire week with a compilation of energizing and up-beat music. The entire Student Representative Council would like to thank all students and teachers for their participation, alongside the parents, without you all, such an event would not have been so successful. Stay tuned for more that is to come! For regular updates, follow us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/ishcmcsrc Elijah McKeogh Grade 12 student

LIVE cooking demonstration Chef Gabe taught a small but enthusiastic crowd in The Kitchen last Friday afternoon and showed us all how to cook the perfect omelets. Demonstrating the techniques for creating French and American style omelettes, Chè Gabe made it very clear that working with eggs requires skill and understanding of the ingredient in order to maximize flavours and textures. Being in a small group paid off as we got to have a go at making ourselves. Mine were pretty good, but nowhere near as delicious as Olivia Twomey’s! Look out for the next cooking demonstration by Chef Gabe as we continue to put good food on the agenda at ISHCMC. Sam Sherratt IB PYP Coordinator

Everyone can make difference The central Idea in our current unit of inquiry is ‘Everyone Can Make a Difference’. With this in mind, 4A students decided to organize a special lunch, made by them, to say thank you to the people who have made a difference in their lives. They each wrote a letter of appreciation to their chosen guest, inviting them to join us for lunch. They then decided on a menu, calculated the quantities they would need for each recipe, designed name cards, bought ingredients, and finally got right down to the business of cooking! The class were joined by parents, teachers, siblings and friends – a cross section of people who make a difference to us every day. Diana Goyder Grade 4 Teacher

Volleyball The ISHCMC Varsity Volleyball team could not had a better start! Though winning all four games we have played: SSIS (2-1), TIS (20), ISHCMC’s junior varsity team (2-0) and AmIS (2-0), we have learnt a lot and they were all valuable experiences towards our team. By playing against other teams, we were able to identify aspects of the game that we still need to work on and get used to playing under pressure. Furthermore, playing against different skill-leveled teams helps us to adapt to the game better while playing under the highest spirit. Nevertheless, we still have several things to work on as a team and no doubt, the rest of the season will not be easy with games against BIS, SSIS, SISAC Tournament and The MRISA Tournament. However, I am certain that with the level of commitment and energy each players are giving in each practices, nothing is unachievable. We will work our hardest, aim for the highest and hopefully achieve our goal! Thank you to everyone who came to our games and cheer us on. We hope to see you all in our future games! ISHCMC Booster Club The ISHCMC Booster Club is a PTO subgroup, a growing group of parents who support ISHCMC Athletic, Creative and Academic programs. In addition to attending and cheering at sporting events, the Booster Club recognizes that participation in athletics benefits everyone, and the Booster Club promotes opportunities to build and strengthen relationships among the student body, staff, parents and the community. Booster Club volunteers will set up booths at concerts, musicals, art shows, academic meets and at several sport events at school, where drinks and food will be sold. We will also give a hand and organize end of season events for the sport teams. The ISHCMC Booster Club mission is to bring in the School Spirit throughout the year and support students in their activity involving the parents. We encourage parents who have students participating in the events to help out at these events. This is a great way to meet other parents, watch the game and have fun! It builds our school community and our hungry students really appreciate it. Proceeds from the Booster Club will go back to the students in the form of more Booster Club supportive events for the students and later on equipment. We welcome your help in baking, selling and supporting, so please send us a email and you will be a part of the Booster Club Supporters. You will then get a list of planned events and opportunities to volunteer. Looking forward hearing from you! PTO Bus Tour The PTO bus tour on 19th Sept, was a great success this year as we had 22 new parents who signed up and we needed two ISHCMC buses for the first time! Leaving ISHCMC at 8:30am sharp we started our journey. The tour included showing tailors, cafes, bakeries and restaurants as well as 24 hour Marts, fitness centers, music schools, kids’ play areas, pharmacies and many other places around Districts 1 and 2. A highlight is Ham Nghi Street where there are two shops which stock specialized food from many different countries. We travelled back to school through the tunnel and this was a really great experience for all those who have not been around to the other side of District 2. After dropping off few parents to ISHCMC at around 11:00am, we then went for a Vietnamese traditional lunch to Mon Hue, accompanied by a Vietnamese mom. The PTO Bus Tour 2014 could proudly proclaim that we have energized, enriched and truly empowered the New Parents to start their journey in HCMC! Anjana PTO Newcomers Rep
