Grade 9 Visit to Mai Tam Shelter, Thu Duc At the end of May, and as part of their final unit of the year based on the novel, “The Heaven Shop and HIV/AIDS awareness, a group of Grade 9 English students visited a local shelter for HIV-positive children. The object of the exercise was to understand from first-hand experience that even though the children have special medical needs, they are to all intents and purposes just like other children. As their teachers, we were immensely proud; the students conducted themselves in the most responsible and respectful way imaginable and were instantly cuddling the babies, high-fiving the toddlers and dancing with the slightly older children. The visit was a brief one but will no doubt be remembered for many years to come. Furthermore, it is hoped that this fun, albeit poignant experience will motivate one or more of the students to develop a partnership between Mai Tam and ISHCMC and initiate a their own service project next year, and/or, as in a previous year, inspire a Grade 10 personal project.
